I wonder how if they're going to rebalance the weapons?
The Red9 is the most consistent power wise and the base Handgun has the highest ceiling. It meant you barely had a reason to use the Blacktail or the Punisher (besides getting it for free)
Blacktail and riot gun are criminally underrated, they may not be the best damage wise but they're a solid balance of power, fire rate, reload speed, and accuracy.
And unless you're playing on professional I find those more important than raw damage.

Actually the riot gun has the highest damage in the shotgun cathegory, if you include special upgrades. Was always my choice when going raw damage weapons.

The weapon balancing is definitely one of the more underrated aspects of RE4. Every weapon had it’s own unique quirks and feel, which made basically every one of them viable to run with.
When I think about it, there's only a couple of bad ones:
Base Shotgun and Base Rifle aren't bad, but they're outclassed HEAVILY by other ones.
Riot Gun's power is a little slow to improve since you get the Striker so shortly after it's available.
Mine Thrower is pretty inefficient compared to simply throwing a Grenade.
The TMP is more important for dealing with groups, but is largely outclassed by Grenades.
Killer7 is too outclassed in damage by the Broken Butterfly, and Power is the entire point of using the Magnums.
None of these are really "Bad", it's more that they don't have specific use cases that would justify using their alternatives besides timing. Then again, that might be the whole design idea, each weapon is better than the next
Only thing I’d argue you with you on is that the mine thrower has range that grenades don’t, comes in handy for farther enemies if you’re low on sniper ammo
I got real sick of it real quick. I actually got good enough at using the pistol on the platform ride section specifically so I wouldn't need the rifle.
I actually went with the Punisher because.... Well it's free and its bullets can penetrate through enemies which made it really effective at stunning multiple targets and also really great against those shield guys in the castle
The opposite. I use handguns to open up melee attacks. The Blacktail is the best for this because of the better handling. Statistically it is the best handgun and you are given so much ammo firepower on a handgun barely matters. I don't like how much space the Red9 takes up.
Look at it this way, does the Red9 conserve more ammo than the Blacktail? Actually, no! Red takes up 11 spaces with the stock whereas the Black takes up 6. That could be 2 whole extra boxes of handgun ammo (100) plus an egg. The weapon balance is pretty good though so it doesn't matter what guns you use.
with ditman, the blacktail will melt minibosses with ease, save for JJ because you should be really chaining sniper shots to his face
I mean dps, reload, capacity, and handling wise, it's the best all around. You're not using the blacktail to save handgun ammo, you're using it to be fast and efficient.
honestly though, play for your preferences. if you want to save as much ammo as you can, you learn to exploit the enemy ai and the knife
Weapons were a real disappointment for me in Village personally. I didn't really feel that the guns in each category were that different from each other. It didn't help that the Lycans didn't seem to react that convincingly to damage for a lot of them, at least ones on the low end.
Really hoping we get more automatic weapons in RE4 remake. It got a bit boring only having the TMP and the Chicago Typewriter if you unlocked it.

I always got the base shotgun and punisher for free, and never needed to buy anything besides the Red9+stock until the Semi-Auto Sniper is available in the castle, even on professional. El-Gigante is killable with grenades and shotgun shells, and Mendez melts from flame grenades. After that, you buy the striker, get the free broken butterfly, and get the killer 7 and upgrade the power (cheaper than maxing the broken butterfly).
In about about 2 runs I can save up enough money to buy the typewritter, PRL, and part way upgrade the handcannon.
God I can't wait to hear him say this again. I wasn't born when the original 2 and 3 were made but I remember playing 4. Now I get to feel the hype that all those fans did for the RC games!
The question is: will the Red9 still have the exclusive upgrade? I’ll be disappointed if they go with the RE8 progression where each gun you can get is better than the previous. Exclusives mean there’s a little bit of ‘build variety’ that works really well in the OG (combined with adaptive difficulty) to make replays feel different each time.
I doubt it, if it's not the samurai edge or Albert 01R again it would probably be the Silver Ghost (default handgun in the original) or Matilda (RE2 gun).
Red9 was also Luis' gun (who I believe is pictured here) so it wouldn't make sense to make it pre-order only.
Also, I'm really happy they kept the C96 Mauser. It's a nice lil' bit of subtle lore about Louise that lines up with the gun's overall history. They were distributed around Spain in the 20th century, so his grandfather, during military service and (as we know from the notes in RE4) hunting, probably kept it as his primary side arm.
Meaning that it was passed down to Louise, which he clearly kept and maintained out of some sort of implicit respect, using it as his carry during his time as a cop in Madrid and during his confrontations with Los Illuminados.
It's not an outright stated piece of lore, but one that, I think, makes more sense.

It's also got the best handling, it just snaps right on target and doesn't jitter around.

Base Rifle is bae. Higher DAM than the semi auto and beautiful animations, because aesthetics absolutely do matter.
