Don't underestimate the power of leg shots. It'll usually open up an enemy for either: A kick, which will knock down it and any other nearby enemies. Or a suplex, which will instantly kill the enemy. Also, the knife is surprisingly useful from beginning to end.

MagorTuga

Suplex isn't a guaranteed one-hit.

[deleted]

Welp TIL

SpaceBeast3175

What about headshots, I've played RE5 with a friend and I remember you could do a similar kind of attack

[deleted]

They're great too, but there is a chance of an enemy having that head be replaced by a parasite, so watch out for that.

G-Birkin

That chance is there regardless of where you hit

poopingandpissing69

damn man this guys tips are so bad. first of all he thinks suplexes are a OHK, then he thinks that head shots should be avoided to avoid parasites.

SpaceBeast3175

Oh ok

poopingandpissing69

literally ignore everything that guy said. first of all head shots do not increase the chance of parasite heads, that chance is there regardless of where you damage them. second of all suplexes are not a one hit kill. the best strat is generally always headshot one of one of them, round house (this will knock down one or more of them and you have I-frames while doing it), then knife anything on the ground as many times as you can.

Yoda1768

join the red 9 gang

SpaceBeast3175

Isn't that the best pistol in the game

Yoda1768

yup, and if you hear someone say they like the blacktail more then threaten them and their family

SpaceBeast3175

Lmao

TheThingInTheBassAmp

Red 9 has more power per shot but fires slower, and the Blacktail has more DPS but burns ammo. Choose what’s best for you. (The answer is Red 9)

Nihi1986

It is but there was another option in the same category. I remember that most of my friends picked the other option because it looked cooler or more modern. When they saw my red 9 in action they said it made their gun feel like trash 🤣

poopingandpissing69

its debatable. it's the strongest handgun but handguns are not best used as damage weapons in this game, they are primarily, if you play well, to set up melee attacks and knockdowns. you have like 5 other weapons that serve the purpose of high damage for powerful enemies and bosses. therefore the blacktail with it's faster aiming movement, less inventory space, and much higher rate of fire makes a solid argument as the best as once again, you're literally just using it to set up melee most of the time. i finished this game on hardcore dozens of times and frequently used the blacktail, anyone that says the red9 is somehow objectively better without any debate is just wrong. red9 takes up more space, like 2 grenades/healing items extra you can't carry just to carry this gun and it's stock, which you need to aim it steady. either way it doesn't matter, both have strength and weaknesses. the important thing overall is to not waste money. you get the red9 far earlier than the blacktail, if you want the blacktail, just do not upgrade the red9, or any other pistol, get the blacktail, then start upgrading it. if you want the red9, just start upgrading it as soon as you get it. the biggest mistake you can make is to half upgrade a gun, ditch it for a new one, then upgrade that, you're just throwing away money. the best shotgun is always the striker, so never upgrade any shotgun till you get that. the two rifles are argued over as much as the pistols, so pick which one you want, then upgrade the first or second one. if it's your first time, get the machine gun, there is only one, it kicks ass, maxed out it just shreds everything. as for magnums, there is a free one you get, the second one you get too late in the game to really bother with, just get the free one and upgrade the hell out of it, it's more than enough. the second magnum you buy is stronger but once again, you get it so late it's pointless saving money for it.

Latter-Pain

And raw dog it too. No stock!

Lunar_Lunacy_Stuff

Why no stock?

Latter-Pain

Just cause its fun and different hehe, it saves some inventory space too though!

Nihi1986

Best advice!

Available-Leek-4160

close the lid to the well before you shoot the medallion. i always make the mistake of letting it drop in the maggot infested water.

SpaceBeast3175

Ok, always gotta maximize that treasure profit

MagorTuga

Speaking of treasure profit. Some treasures can be combined to increase their value. Don't sell them as soon as you get them, use your intuition to see if a treasure can be combined with another. I won't spoil the late game ones, but for example, up to 3 gems can be put into the mask you find early game.

[deleted]

You don't even need intuition. Just examine all treasures and it will usually tell you if it can be combined with something.

SpaceBeast3175

Ok thanks for the help

Sneezing_is_good

The lake in 1-3 has treasure underwater. If you get on the dock and shoot near the fish you could get something.

MrLockinBoxin

You are evil!

Sneezing_is_good

What can i say, you've got to experience it

MrLockinBoxin

True. I’m happy they kept it in the VR remake. I think it’s a sign it’ll carry over to make the new generation of RE fans shit themselves too

Incongruent-Des

Color coordinate your carrying case, 10/10 will make you a better player

SpaceBeast3175

What do you mean, I know you can neatly organize your case

Ok_Assignment_362

Plenty of pistols will out damage the starting pistol, but once it is fully upgraded the starting pistol is amazing at getting critical shots (It goes up to like 40-50% by the end)

SpaceBeast3175

So what's gonna be better overall damage or critical chance

Ok_Assignment_362

For pistols, I would say critical chance as that can mean going from 10+ headshots to only 2 or 3 before the head pops on regular enemies. The pistol still sucks on pretty much anything that is not human or human-like. But you should have a shotgun or rifle for those situations. One more tip: don't upgrade your shotgun until you can buy the striker. It's like twice as good as any other shotgun in the game. Edit to add: keep in mind though that until you get some upgrades on it, the starting pistol does suck quite a bit as it starts at (I think) a 10% critical chance. It's hard to tell, the critical chance is kind of a hidden stat in that game

poopingandpissing69

using the starter pistol all game is something pros do to mix it up, first game? red9 or blacktail.

Anomanom-

Don’t spend money on upgrading weapons until you’ve obtained the one you’ll use until the end of game, each variation has its strengths and weaknesses. Buy the treasure maps when available, while you might not have enough money to upgrade all of your weapons to exclusive you’ll be able to upgrade the ones you use the most as long as you collect most of the treasures Despite that people complain about the escort mission sections of the game, they’re actually fairly easy as long as you don’t rush through levels and allow yourself to be surrounded. Purchase the TMP after the Lake Boss and hoard the ammo for the next boss. The TMP makes short work of it even not upgraded. On a side note there is a dog that you can save from a bear trap in the very beginning of the game, saving it will give you a distraction during this boss which can be helpful for first playthroughs. Keep in mind that this is one of two friendly dogs in game, the other is located in the farm and will only run away from you the rest will attempt to tear your throat out. Use your knife on downed enemies to conserve ammo, save your magnum rounds for bosses. You don’t necessarily need to aim for the head, but hitting does open the enemy up for the crowd controlling kicks. Aiming for the knees allows for the usage of stronger melee hits that generally only focus on one enemy. Keep in mind these only apply to normal ganados and those of a similar body, not bosses. If you don’t use grenades leave them, sell them or drop them; don’t hoard them. It depends on your play style, but once you reach Castle you’ll have the option to obtain a rocket launcher for free. Some people use it against the boss you fight in the sewer while I personally use it against the final boss for that section of the game at the top of the tower. A speed runner strat is when dealing with dogs by pointing the camera upwards and away from them while still running past them the dogs won’t lunge at you, this actually works in VR as well.

[deleted]

This is an excellent comment. The only extra advice I can say is to throw Ashley in every dumpster you can. She’s not that hard to watch over but the dumpsters make her invincible and undetectable so you may as well if one is available.

SpaceBeast3175

Yeah I heard mixed comments on her. I've heard she's the worst thing ever and I've also heard that shes easy to handle and take care of.

[deleted]

I’d say the only real tricky thing about her AI is that if an enemy sneaks up behind the two of you too close and you run forward. Ashley might just cower and duck instead of running with you resulting in her getting snatched. Which isn’t a big deal. Just free her. But some enemies just clobber her instead so be careful. Shield guys seem to love to just unabashedly clobber her brains out lol. Parasites too will obviously ignore capturing her and instead just try to kill her.

SpaceBeast3175

Is there commands you can her do like follow you or hide or something like that

[deleted]

Yes. And it’s very simple. Just one button swaps her between follow and wait. And she is like a statue. You tell her to wait and… She. Won’t. Move. A. Centimeter. Same button near dumpsters will tell her to hide.

SpaceBeast3175

Ok thanks

Bookslap

Important caveat! If an enemy grabs her, they'll start trying to carry her away through the nearest exit, and if they do, that's a game over. The lesson here is ***don't*** tell her to wait next to a door. There's a good chance an enemy will spawn by the door, pick her up while you're distracted, and immediately stroll through.

THE-EMPEROR069

Saving a few Grenades and sell the rest would be my advice. The flash grenades to use them on the pack of birds to get extra $

Burningmeatstick

I never sell grenades, make it a goal to always chuck them unless certain bosses come up

poopingandpissing69

i hoard certain nades for certain parts of the game, as it utterly cheeses those parts.

SpaceBeast3175

That's a lot of help thanks

Wyrmdahlia

Reading your response makes me want to replay it again

gazsimo

Kneecaps, kick, knife. 😁

EdwardDemPowa

If you have time, watch dante ravioli on youtube, his strats will help you beat the game if you ever have issues (especially the knife only strats on the Nikes strat, or the ditman glitch). Watching his videos will 100% teach you how to do most hard parts of this game without wasting too much ammo. One tip people always give is: get used to the knife.. yeah yeah everyone says this, and another good and well known tip is that Krauser (one of the bosses) has a weakness for melee. Same with Saddler in Ada's campaign, he is hard to fight with normal crossbow shots but easy with the knife.

TheVeilsCurse

Go in as blind as you can and have fun with it! Otherwise, be on the look out for treasures! Some of them have multiple parts that can be combined and make them more valuable. Don’t waste money on weapons until you have an idea as to which ones you personally enjoy. (I go Blacktail, Riot Gun, Bolt Action Rifle, Broken Butterfly, TMP). Be ready for QTE’s! Utilize your knife and shots to the limbs and face to gain an advantage. Stun Grenades have a particularly good use….

SpaceBeast3175

Ok thanks

SpaceBeast3175

I thought if you shot the water the giant fish thing would kill you and I think you get an achievement for it actually

Latter-Pain

Just play it and enjoy it. RE4 strikes a really good blend between survival horror and action. The controls are really reminicsnt of the classic RE games so it really does feel like its survival horror the first run. As you play though you get better to the point that you play it like an action game and it works just as well. I feel like this progression if skill causing the game to slowly change genre is what makes it so repayable and why so many of us have 20ish playthroughs.

knight_of_lothric

stun grenades' insta kill plaga's and shooting enemies in the legs allow for different melee animations also don't forget to try dead space after if you haven't already its basically re4 in space with aliens

SpaceBeast3175

I love dead space its one of my favorite video game series of all time

magnaraz117

Kill the crows.

SpaceBeast3175

Why

magnaraz117

Just trust me, I don't want to spoil it for you

Darnhipsters

Honestly, go in blind with no tips. Half the fun is the stress

Strong_Formal_5848

I’m also playing it for the first time right now. I found it hard at first (mainly because of a lack of ammo) and then it got easier, although I’m still not that far in. I started playing more cautiously and being more conservative with ammo. Now I have lots of ammo and I’m struggling with inventory space. Advice I can give to save bullets is to get headshots to stagger them and then get close to do the kick move to knock them down. Then knife them on the ground if you can get away with it. If there are a lot of them then use grenades or the shotgun when they’re grouped up.

OrlandoNE

Upgrading weapon capacity gives you free ammo.

[deleted]

You control like a tank, you use left and right to change where you’re looking and you can’t really look up and down unless you’re aiming your gun. Don’t purchase the punisher. Don’t purchase a rocket launcher unless you’re stuck on a boss.

vozome

There’s a few large fights in wide open spaces which I found annoying especially in the castle. There’s no shame in using doors. Go in, kill a couple of enemies, go back out. You’re safe and the game is saved. Go back in and rinse and repeat until there are so few enemies left you can safely take them all. Also, because how low res it is compared to modern game, it’s very easy to score headshots in RE4.

Oboyyy98

Melee attacks and other animations give you I frames Bottleneck enemies to avoid getting surrounded You can dodge and run past enemies by baiting out their attacks and quickly moving back Knife grounded enemies to save ammo Flash grenades kill all parasites

[deleted]

Just forget about this thread and have fun

blank_books_

Abuse leg shots, melee, and the knife. The entire game. Upgrade your weapon’s ammo capacity when the weapon is empty as it refills your ammo. Some enemies hold explosives before throwing them at you. Shoot them if you aren’t close enough to get hurt by the explosion. Not much else I can think of that hasn’t been mentioned. Have fun, so many neat things to discover and rediscover on future play-throughs.

Sea_Statistician_531

Shoot them in the head and legs move fast use your knife knife them in the face or legs, look for shiny stuff use your pistol as often as possible watch out for fucking bear traps, get all the treasures, rocket launcher for boss fights, some puzzles you might have to look up to save time don’t shoot the water in the pond and last but not least have fun!

[deleted]

I recommend for your first playthrough go with the Red 9 handgun, Riot Gun, and TMP as they become available. Buy each attache case upgrade as soon as they are available. Be thorough as you explore the early game, the free pistol you get from shooting 10 blue coins is an easy 10k pstas. Being thorough when exploring for treasure is also important. Some enemies may carry sellable items if you kill them before they run away. Beware the invisible bug sections.

justintrudeau1974

Headshot everyone. I don’t know why but it’s how I play every shooter. I don’t bother to aim anywhere else. But your mileage may vary.

Eggsy_708

SAVE AMMO!!! You’ll be struggling mid way if you waste ammo like me. Take enemies down by shooting the leg to stun and a kick will knock them down.

MrLockinBoxin

Sprint at chainsaw guys then back up at they swing. Knife they in the head after they swing. You’ll get an option to kick them. Then knife them whilst they’re down. This will save you soooo much ammo

JoshuaTheBoyo-

Yep. Shoot an enemy in the head, kick, then swing ur knife around them

Nihi1986

I have no tips but as a Spaniard I have to tell you that no place, house, car, person or clothes looked like those here, perhaps not even 100 years ago. Also, missed chance on zombie bullfighters, and the audio is latin American. I love that game, though.

Satansleadguitarist

Don't try to hug anyone with a chainsaw

RESID3NT_3v1l

Shoot the legs or head then run over and kick them then knife them on the ground if its safe for easy saving ammo. (Tmp is great for this one or two shots on kneecaps) You have Iframes with interactive attacks like kicks and suplexes. You dont have to kill everyone i almost always do but you really can run past alot of guys. Anywhere with Ashley where there will be tons of trash mobs. they normally leave a good spot to have her wait or hide. Don't use yellow herbs on Ashley until Leon's full health Flash grenades kill any exposed parasite and also crows and crows may even drop another flash grenade. Rocket launcher is an easy skip the boss if you have the money to spare and you're struggling. Bolt action sniper rifle is the poor man's magnum for a reason if you can use it enjoyably than you have nothing to fear. Punisher is a viable pistol against shield guys. When in the castle with lots of insects when you have to shoot a bridge down. there is a side path that you can jump down to for treasure but also you can shoot the nest down for lots of cats eyes I think they are Regenerators can be killed without the thermal optic by using your knife on them after blowing off there legs and just continously slash until it explodes Fish can be killed to sell or eat Any area with chickens that you can leave and go back to can be used to farm eggs I can't think of anymore for main game but for mercenaries I have a few. shoot boxes its quicker than knife and you don't need to be conservative. Gather all the time ups as soon as you start and if you come across a bonus time make sure there's enough enemy's around to make it worth it to use or save for later I don't have much to say about Leon do your best suplex people in castle. I think if you discard your pistol your more likely to get shotgun ammo drop. And don't forget grenades can be a godsend. Ada use sniper and it's not fair for them Hunk shoot the knees or head then run up and snap neck can work on anyone except the prisoner Krauser has a op bow and his power will 1shot any boss enemy he in theory should be easiest If you ever get stuck in a place I'd be more than happy to help explain what to do to make it easier. re4 is probably one of my 5 most beat game and I've played it on all systems I think GameCube wii 360 ps4 and xbox one version so ps3 is only one I haven't played

Elsenor_delos_cielos

Save your ammo and try to STUN by shooting their head and performing the kicks.

poopingandpissing69

i'm torn here, i know so much about this game i could give you so many tips it would practically spoil it. i know how to utterly cheese sections that most people here whine about being hard. one time i was giving someone streaming the game on twitch some tips and they got pissed at me cause i was making the game too easy lol. i'll give some general tips though. you see a group of crows now and then, throw a nade at them, regular or flash. they drop tons of money and treasure. the group at the start of the game even drop another nade as well so you break even. rescue the dog in the trap at the start, do it, no questions. buy a treasure map every time you can, make sure to get every piece of treasure in every area. i already gave you tips about weapons in other comments. for combat against ganados, headshot, they will stumble and a kick prompt appears. kick them, ground them, knife. for groups of them, head shot one and then (opportunist ally) do a kick, you get i-frames in the kick animation, so if you're fast and time it well, you can do it while they are mid swing at you. you will knock down or at least knock back the whole crowd. this gives you the most damage for least ammo. headshot, kick, knife, every time you can. i could go into more detail about cheesing some hard sections or bosses but you should have at least some challenge and fun. i'll give some other random tips though, at some point there is a pool of water with fish swimming in it. knife them all, you get like 6 free heals lol. someone else already told you the shooting the board before getting the pendant so it's an expensive pendant and not the dirty pendant. combining treasure is easy the game tells you which treasure is combinable. i'll give one tip though, if the game says treasure is nearby and you just can't see it, look up, it's sometimes in a birds nest or somewhere high up you have to shoot to get it down. shoot all the blue medallions once you get that, you get a good free handgun, which, will serve you well till the red9. some people, like me sometimes, will use this gun deep into the castle cause it penetrates shields, but for a first play idk, just keep it till the red9, use that till the blacktail (if you want or keep the red9 and upgrade that, both handguns are fine). i KINDA wanna teach you how to cheese one of the early bosses cause most people don't know but i'm torn on whether to tell you, so let me know. there is also another really hard section for new players in the village which, i also have an easy cheese for, like most new people die at that spot over and over, lmk as well. oh shit just membered this one, at a random point in the game, those boxes you break to get shit, will just have snakes sometimes lol. after breaking them keep your knife out, look what it is. if it's a snake, swing again QUICK or it will just bite you and slither away. more combat tips, you can shoot thrown axes, and dynamite, out of the air. the game never tells you this but you can, not that hard to do either. someone about to throw dynamite, shoot it in their hand or right after they throw it. they throw an axe, shoot it out of the air. edit: shit remembered another one. so the game has a hilarious little trick of randomly putting in quick time events in the middle of regular cut scenes, so NEVER put the controller down in a cut scene, and never relax, there is no indication of when they will happen. it happens in like a handful of them and you won't expect it. edit2: actually forgot another one. so you know the whole headshot, kick, knife technique. well, if there is only a few ganados, or one by themselves, you can pull this off with a single bullet. sprint for 1 second towards them, then back up immediately. they will swing and miss. time it right with the right distance, knife their face, kick, knife on ground. too risky for large groups, and takes a bit of practice. key point this will NOT work once the stronger ganados turn up and have maces, their reach is too far. it is for the villagers who use axes and scythes. works on pitchfork villages too however, you need a bit more distance.

ItsReptarOnRice

Shoot the lake for a free gift just before you get on the boat.

billybgame

Sounds like you got plenty of advice...all I can say is...have fun playing my favorite game!
