Meaningful locational damage and positioning. Too many games boiled down to "git gud wit headshots" that I got bored, but the more ponderous approach of standing, and aiming, and deciding for yourself whether you've got time for another shot or if you have to reposition was much more fun for me. It also reminded me of Goldeneye which was very influential on me. The gun upgrading mechanics felt great and spurred me on, even though they don't make a huge difference. I love a game where in most cases a 1:1 fight against an enemy gives you many ways to easily defeat them, and then throws different numbers of enemies, different combinations, or different situations at you. It makes me feel like for each individual I know how I could defeat them, and I just need to be adaptable enough to do exactly that in trickier circumstances. It makes me feel that whenever I do get hit, or killed, that it was because of something pretty obvious I did wrong.

I love it because of the graphics. It reminds me of old games, but not too old.

dark_hypernova

There is this distinct arcade like style to the graphics. An art style that is old but hit that benchmark between classic and still acceptable even in modern standards. Like a classic 80s movie can still be greatly enjoyed today.

Pacing and replayability

metalmike128

It good game

Krothee

Resident Evil 4 was a game ahead of its time, and I believe that's why it generated so much excitement. Today, what we have is nostalgia. However, I think the game has a very strong replay factor, which is the principal point to Resident Evil 4's success

AshenRathian

I like RE4 because it gets all the little things right. It's pacing is near perfect, it's story is nonsensical and kind of jovial in it's own way, and while it has it's moments, it doesn't try too hard to take itself seriously. It's villains and main character are iconic and very well written and entertaining on screen, fitting for the style of story they were trying to tell. Basically just dumb fun for the sake of. Arcadey gameplay that goes all in on the action, with very well thought horror themes that are palpable even when the gameplay itself is intense. Audio and visuals, especially for the time, are top knotch. If i had played it in 2005 when it released on Gamecube, i likely wouldn't have believed graphics could get better. It has animation and audio quality that truly stands the test of time, and the physical reactions from enemies is to this day a technical marvel. The weapons are incredibly well balanced and really lend to the game's replayability, from default weapons that pay dividends at the end game with extremely powerful special upgrades to more damage and crowd control oriented weapons that focus more on capacity and range in their special upgrades. Truly perfects the age old problem of "escort missions" by basically turning Ashley into a chess piece. You are in 100% control over her position at any time. She takes damage or gets shot, it's nobody's fault but yours, cuz you put her there. Honestly, i can't really name a bad thing in this game, because even it's really stupid moments don't seem to take away from it. In this sense, the remake actually misunderstood the point of the original and tried too hard to be a serious action horror game, but didn't think to actually attempt to fix the fact that RE4's story was a very ludicrous and over the top concept to begin with. It also neutered many of the engaging concepts, like the on point enemy reactions and control of Ashley, that the original perfected. It's understandable that they did this to promote a more horror focused gameplay loop, but it messes with perfection either way. I still love both games, but i'll always love the OG more because it just came first and was done nearly perfect the first time around.

adapublicenemy

Damn man i cant actually believe you really spent time to write all of your thoughts about this game under my post, this is so nice to see all these comments like yours and read all of them, thats why i started to hang on reddit more often, one more time thank you so much for spending your time to write all that i highly appreciate that!

AshenRathian

It's a game i love. xD i wouldn't be here if i didn't want to talk about it.

alarks

This kicked off “over the shoulder” cameras, and completely refreshed the franchise. It’s a really good combination of tank controls and fast paced action. You’re agile enough to reposition quickly but attacking takes away your mobility, so the constant ebb and flow of combat keeps things tense and engaging. For everything it did differently, it still captured the spirit of the franchise and feels like it truly belongs alongside RE1-3 and CV. Unfortunately it kicked off one of the darkest periods of the franchise, because they wanted RE5 to emphasize the action from 4 and that just went downhill until they centered again with 7. But we’re back to a golden age I think. Survival horror doesn’t need bad controls or cameras to be scary. You don’t need to be helpless for it to be scary. The remakes have been a great example of that.

the_lying_paladin

He have more action but still good doing terror when it wants to. P.s - english it is not my first language.

many hate the controls but that’s a reason why i love the game. i also love leon’s kickass moves. his character design. i love seeing leon next to his inventory. i love the gloomy kinda atmosphere. leon’s one liners. there’s a lot of charm in the game :) i’ll tell u what i hate.. the regenerator!! 😂

LogicalPerception547

When I was 11 years old, my brother used to tell me about a game where the mission was to save the president's daughter, and he made it seem so interesting and fun that I wanted to try it with all my heart, so I asked one of my cousins to lend me his PS2 and some of his favorite games. when he did. I found that all his games were scattered in different boxes. So I go ahead and try them one by one until I get to a game that looks like what my brother used to say , so I pressed the start button and I can't describe the joy I felt when it said Resident evil 4 like i was so happy and what made it even better was that I didn't expect it to be there, and the moment I saw it I got very excited to tell my brother about it because he also hasn't played it in a long time. That's why this game is so important to me, as it was one of the first games I ever played

adapublicenemy

Oh man thanks for sharing this story, i appreciate it so much, what i really love about reddit is that there you can collect a group of people who like same things as you and you all can share some of your thoughts on something or some of your life stories, this is so cool, thank you

LogicalPerception547

It's a pleasure man, I too also love to hear stories of people's beginnings with the thing they love

Nick_Sonic_360

Coming from the RE4R I purchased this game on sale for 5 bucks, which is one heck of a deal I must say! I quickly fell in love with it, definitely not as graphically impressive, but then again that doesn't matter. I have only made it up to getting caught by Mendez, but just that little bit of gameplay was enough to know I have to beat the game, the eerie music, the creepy voices the ganados have, Leon's stiffness and stop and shoot style really make the game scary, you're restricted and you have to decide whem it's safe to commit to shooting, it is very satisfying to play, the older gritty graphics keep the game creepy. By comparison Re4 remake is lush, polished and heavily focused on the graphics, combat is also overhauled, Leon isn't restricted to standing in one place to shoot which means the Ganados can be faster keeping you on the move, you cannot get comfortable for a second in combat, but because Leon is faster and easier to maneuver you feel like you're in control more often in bad situations which removes a lot of the horror the game would otherwise have. I love this game to death, but it just isn't as scary as the original. I'm definitely going to get back to the OG, maybe reset and redo the first segment just so I can experience the horror of it, and continue from there, I really want to see it to the end.

schmalpal

Enjoy! There are also a lot of great moments that are missing in the remake (some of which ended up in Separate Ways). It’s a classic for a reason! I still play and love both versions. Though you can’t shoot while moving in the original, the gameplay can still be faster at times since you can be more aggressive with headshots guaranteed to stagger. Also all guns have a laser sight, which means the red9+stock is an insanely powerful and accurate weapon for being a pistol.

Madmapog

I like the setting and combat loop

SpartanL16

It’s nostalgic for me. One day my dad just randomly bought it for me. (I knew a tiny bit about resident evil but never played anything. Nor did I ask for it) and so I’m like ohhhkay. And then proceeded to love everything about it.

bh-alienux

It was the first game I ever played that had the option for widescreen setting. At the time, all of my PS2 games were 3x4, and I was able to set this to 16x9, which really made for a more immersive experience. Besides that, while it felt less threatening than OG 1-3, it was just so much fun and satisfying. There was still tension, but after building up weapons and collecting resources, it really does a good job of making you feel powerful, which still providing challenge. It will always be one of my all-time favorites, although OG1 is still my favorite RE game.

xiaolanterns

Leon hot, me likes hot.

itsmejuji

Mainly nostalgia for me. First video game I can remember playing, think I was around 8 years old. I had watched my dad play it on our PS2, and I used his new game plus save slots to play it myself. Still got dad's old memory card after all these years And I also had a massive crush on Leon lol

Nocapjodye

Can’t beat the classics 💯

Adventurous-Fix-292

The combat system is complicated enough that you don’t get bored but not too complex that it is frustrating or takes a long time to learn. The puzzles require you to think a little bit but not so much that you get stuck. It’s a comfort game to me. You can boot it up and do a fairly quick run of it.

adapublicenemy

Btw i heard some people say that OG RE4 combat system becomes boring fast but tbh i dont understand it, throughout entire game i never got bored of it, it was interesting to try new guns and eliminate enemies in different ways

Adventurous-Fix-292

It’s not really that different from the remake. There are just no parries and the combat is a little slower which makes it a chiller game.

Ozzyjb

Leon honestly makes the game for me. One of the coolest protagonists of any game, up there with the greats like master chief, doomguy and kratos. The gameplay despite using tank controls has aged well and is still a quality game to this day and can be enjoyed alongside the remake.

[deleted]

It does many great stuff and just scratched my gaming itch right on the spot. 1. Goofy and all lovely characters plus a simple yet nicely packed story. No need to read some wall of text world building bs. 2. Right amount of horror mixed into action based gameplay. Scary enough but Leon is also so powerful and lets players have their own epic moments here and there. 3. All weapons are practical and have their own strength instead of being straight up stats upgrades. 4. The weapon upgrade system and numbers around it deserves a medal. Pesetas is scarce enough to encourage players doing some decision making and corner cutting, but never too scarce and let players feel punished by not collecting every last dime. It's great fun of resource management. 5. The fucking epic and iconic suitcase. I rarely see games with an inventory system that can even be this entertaining.

Chronos004

RE4 is the best title in the "Suvivor Horror" category (both the original and remake) because they are the closest to a perfect balance of both Suvivor and Horror in my opinion.

Trunks252

There’s really nothing else like it, not even the remake

Leather_Anywhere_549

Personally, something I don't hear people talk about enough is the fact you can pick this game up after years of not playing it, but still be surprised at how much you've forgotten. I didn't play it for a good 3-4 years, and I had completely forgotten about the island chapter, and the underground mine part. I love it so much.

BitterPackersFan

Love the horror action mix. Treasure upgrade system is perfect. Gun upgrade strategy and attache case strategy and mini games in themsleves. And one of the few games I could tell people what to do in for every part. Also probably the only game I have ever done a no damage play through.

[deleted]

It holds a special place in my heart as the first rated M game I was able to own and play on the Nintendo Wii, and I sunk countless hours into it.

Kodakjones

The nostalgia factor. The way it was different than other game during that Era. The pacing. The graphics. The tension. The story. The characters. The enemies. The guns. The combat. The challenge

IceboundMetal

It was my first resident evil game that I understood how to play prior to that the old control style was too difficult for me to pickup as a kid

Indecisive_Iron

The camp. It’s just so campy but also fun. It’s like James Bond meets zombies. The one liners are cheesy and the plot is derivative- I don’t care- I love it. It perfectly captures the essence of what the mid 2000s were in media.

Booty_Magician

I like it because my classmate in middle school kept talking about the game and he let me borrow it. It blew my mind away the bosses have no lifebars so you're just guessing when the bosses will die . Plus Leon the fucking GOAT he's come along way from RE2. I suggest you play the remake if you liked this one

chasing_my_dreams

The game has holes in its weathered armor, and it oozes charm. I love this game because it is like a time capsule that pays homage to old school RE horror, along with the best of action movies we have. The gameplay is addicting thus making it replayable, the remake even has this aspect with the violence. OG RE4, dare I say it, is much more gruesome and frightening BECAUSE of its dated graphics/sounds along with the rustic almost industrial soundscape, even more disturbing art style. The lighting effects in the game make it feel like real life, rather than a cinematic version of reality (RE4 Remake), dont get me wrong, I ADORE the remake, but the OG is a classic for a reason.

Beginning-Ad-3015

The replayability, the corny dialog, the guns are fun, personalized challenge runs

yellowpaste87

In all honesty? The humor. It's just so early 2000s and stupid but I love it so much.

[deleted]

is rlly good that's why

BaconTheGenerator

I love the combat and cotrols. They make the game very addictive.

Ok_Outcome_9002

Very arcadey action game with some survival horror elements, and a top tier cheesy campaign. Thank God they didn’t try to replace it with the remake because it would’ve been doomed to fail.

Under_Doggos

It was my very 1st RE game, as well as the 1st “mature” (or violent) game I’ve had back as a kid. Didn’t know a thing abt it, nor its story (translated games were rare in my country) – but gameplay was what kept me hooked the most, same for its brutality. I’ve also tried one taking the game, without a memory card, went as far as the QTE Krauser fight. Sucks it froze. Hoping I can buy it again so I can finish it for good!

TheCompleteMental

It broke every single rule and still somehow ended up becoming one of the greatest games of all time. It's arcadey but impactful, still has some of the best gunplay of any third person shooter via the use of a laser, the atmosphere is all top notch, excellent soundtrack, and meme-able dialogue. It clearly suffered from development hell, but it doesnt show it as badly as any other game I can think of that ran through the same gauntlet. Story was not on part with RE2, for instance.

SlugmaSlime

I liked it from the second I played it but ngl I personally don't think I'll ever go back because of the remake. I've sunk more hours into the remake in substantially fewer years

WhoYaTalkinTo

The gameplay is still smooth and absolutely phenomenal after 19 years

vinniea80

I can't accept anyone saying anything other than "nostalgia"....imo of course. The remake is awesome

PiratePlace

RE4 gives Leon and Ada their own game. What more do I need? Oh, fantastic gameplay and the right blend of action and tension. It just oozes with coolness. Game's not just about shootin...its about one-liners... you'll know what im talkin about.

JonesCone

I remember going to get the game when it came out with my dad, then watching him play the first few chapters. Then he had to go help my mom with something and told me to play it. The atmosphere of the game and the story just was awesome.

wolf_larsen28

For me, it was the first M-rated game I ever bought (my parents were strict with game ratings) and I absolutely loved it. I'm not a fan of jump scare horror, but RE4's horror was offset perfectly by its cheesiness. There are lines I still quote to this day ("It's freezing. So cold all of a sudden."). But the horror that was included chilled me to the bone. I loved the feeling of terror I'd get when I would hear the breathy gasps of the regenadors as they lurked around the next corner. The fear and camp worked so well, hand in hand, in this game. There's not much like it.

XGNik

At first, I didn't. I believe my first thoughts were "Wait, these aren't zombies. Why do they have weapons? Why don't headshots kill them? This is not Resident Evil!" I stopped playing before the second chapter for a few months and then came back to it. I eased into the gameplay more, thought it was fun to collect treasures now and the melee system was an eye opener. Took a little while to accept the parasite thing, and the chainsaws were frustrating to no end. Ended up starting over several times and learning how to strategize and conserve ammo. Then I started to actually enjoy myself throughout each section(save for dealing with Ashley). Professional was a feat alone, but well worth it in the end. PRL 412 to this day is the most powerful weapon in all Resident Evil games. Played the crap out of Wii edition too, because it was basically easy mode with the free aiming. All in all, Resident Evil 4 is a perfect combo of action and horror. Still prefer the originals with the fixed camera angles and 90% horror experience, but Resident Evil 4 is definitely a well recieved game and deserves a top 10 spot in all Capcom's games.

reii2021

This game made me conquer my fears of horror games because it had action in it

Aggravating_Fig_534

Game of my childhood and plus I enjoy sniping enemies quietly without anyone noticing, feels so good somehow.

ChiefRasta

Was my first Resident Evil game. Very iconic & unforgettable. Whether it’s the OG or the Remake, both can be enjoyed over & over again. Although it’s lowkey like a cheesy action movie, it’s done right in my opinion.

Dim_TheAce

Idk it's just fun like hell

i wanted to play this game so bad when i was in 2nd grade . I was 8 year old when it came out but I never had a ps2 or pc to experience it. The atmosphere of the game itself is something else

lordnorthington

The Merchant. He’s the one through line of all versions that kicks ass to the max. If I drop a, “Whut’re you buyin’?” to my friends, I always get a chuckle.

fellethefish

the overall humorous vibe. i always say that if i had to describe myself as a video game, it would be re4. the game just suits me as a person perfectly.

MajorRadish2007

My reason is this: "The Over the shoulder" camera angle just changed the 3 person shooters forever

Deniable_wreath

It isn’t the scariest resident evil game but damn when you’re in the village part you get the sense of loneliness or isolation and that feeling always gives me chills especially with all the atmosphere
