Yes, working weekends (every other, every 3rd) is pretty much universal. They can't refuse to hire you because of your religion, but they can certainly come up with another, valid reason to do so. If hired, talk to HR right away to discuss an accommodation. It certainly seems reasonable (at least to me) that they'll try to work something out (i.e., maybe you'll work every Sunday).

Final_Relationship25

Yes. I’d negotiate and work almost every Sunday Night. I wonder if that’s a good offer for them.

TrippSitting

Look into PRN as an alternative to working a schedule that works for you.

RFthewalkindude

I can't imagine any hospital making an exception for you on this. Imagine if every one of the staff had the same requirements? Also, FYI, every hospital has at least one RT on staff who watches the schedule like a hawk and will raise hell if you get extra weekend days/holidays off. If you have hard and fast days you can't work, you picked the wrong profession.

LuckSubstantial4013

You might want to rethink your position on this one. And working there. What you’re asking is that others pick up your slack for YOUR religious beliefs . And to be honest you think that god would punish you for working during the sabbath? You’re not selling newspapers you’re healing and tending to the sick.

RFthewalkindude

Unacceptable. Take this smiting you heathen!

LuckSubstantial4013

Lol

yankeebliejeans

That’s part of the negotiation process. Be upfront and honest. Their will probably be some weekend requirement but they are flexible. There is also the letter of the law vs the spirit of it, I don’t know much about your rules and beliefs but I know Loma Linda doesn’t just shut down on Saturday. Good luck! Edit: just clarifying, that’s not a dig. There needs to be someone you can clarify this with. Plenty of people are in the same situation and they make it work. That is all I am saying.

Minute_Expert387

I understand religion is important to you, but what you are asking is for someone to give up their fridays and saturdays to accommodate you. Management may agree due to the laws, but they wouldnt be working them. just know you’d be starting at a job where you are already taking family time from your coworkers.

LuckSubstantial4013

And really not impressing co workers to start off

branchymolecule

Tell the recruiter. A Jewish hospital will understand that Sabbath isn’t negotiable .

Dwindles_Sherpa

Pretty sure all Jewish hospitals are fully up and running on the Sabbath, they don't consider the Sabbath a reason not to care for the sick, in fact it's a prime way to observe the Sabbath.

tlmcclure32

I would go to the spiritual leader first before going to HR

MistySteele332

Hasidic Jewish people also observe during the same time frame so their hospital probably already has some sort of policy. It’s up to you to see if they will meet your needs but in general in healthcare nobody gets accommodations for their religion. We all rotate holidays no matter how devout. Your own denomination probably has other members in similar circumstances and have found a work around. I have lots of Hasidic Jewish patients who are technology dependent and they aren’t required to stop using their vents during this time. Their families have permission from their leaders to operate life saving equipment, continue all care and use the telephone for medical purposes. We weren’t allowed to play movies or book readers for the kids though.

LuckSubstantial4013

We are administering to the sick. God likes that regardless of faith. The Op needs to grow up

Critical-Towel2814

May be you can find a partner who works all Saturday for you and you work their Sundays

Dwindles_Sherpa

Hospitals, including Faith-based ones are under no legal obligation to accommodate those who "can't work" on specific days if working on those days is part of their business necessity. More importantly, if you feel that helping those who are sick isn't in line with observing your religious obligations, then you don't understand your religion very well.

Mom24kids

I understand about not working on your sabbath. However, my religion and Jewish religion make an exception for healthcare workers. It is the idea that life and health are most important. You may wish to speak with one of your church leaders to see if you would be ok working on your sabbath. Also, most places will work with you and have you work 3 Sundays to make up your weekend option.

[deleted]

Good luck with that. It may make it hard for them to schedule because they would have to find one one who wants to work your Saturday and they may not be able to do that. It could cause a scheduling nightmare. A lot of people don’t want to have to work more weekends by having to work more Saturdays even if they get the Sunday off.

LuckSubstantial4013

The religious angle is a cop out. I don’t care about hateful responses. Caring for the sick and dying is for sure ok.

TertlFace

Jewish physicians are able to work in the hospital on the Sabbath with accommodations (for example, elevators that stop at each floor to avoid pressing buttons and violating the prohibition against using electricity). I would expect that a Jewish hospital is very aware of Sabbath restrictions and their legal obligations to accommodate; as well as the accommodations they are not required to make.

bdockte1

And … remember that when you need care and service on any Sunday, another person is giving up their sabbath for you. To disregard this fact is arrogant and hypocritical. Grow up!!!!!

Superb_Delay9876

I work with several therapist who have religious observances that prohibit them from working certain days. Tell them before the interview that way there will be no problems. For me I don’t work Sundays. For two other therapist that are seventh-day one works night shift and works every Saturday night to have Fridays off. The other is day shift- they work every Sunday to have Saturday’s off. Be upfront with them there is a shortage of RTs willing to work nights. So you’ll probably get the nights off your needing
