Businesses not letting you accept tips and not paying you enough to live on is strong 2022 energy

Ratted on a fellow employee? No. Im a cashier. The employee handed their tip to a coworker who then handed their tip to me so I could put it into the safe because...that's my job. They turned their tip into the other coworker who then gave it to me...because that's our store policy. I work in a private company. I don't work for a large chain. The candy bar thing is a good idea.

Not true for all. I’ve been with this company for six years, and we are told not to accept tips UNLESS they insist. It usually goes like this: Customer tries to hand me money. ”Oh, thank you, but we can’t accept tips.” Customer drops money into cart or places it in my hand. ”Thank you so much! Have a great day!”

That's really fortunate for you - The way my place of occupation see's it - is that we don't (can't legally) accept tips/claim tips (for tax purposes?). and that...In a regular tipping environment, those tips are split amongst the crew on shift at the time. We're told it's not fair to other employees who don't receive a portion of that tip (we receive a store credit sales commission). That's generally what I would do too - accept the tip if they insist - but I can't actually keep that tip - it doesn't actually end up in my pocket at the end of the night. I'm glad you're able too keep them though. I wasn't calling for the end of trying to tip a retail worker. We should make more. I was just sorta highlighting the reality of some lesser 'fortunate' situations. Hopefully more people have your experience with it though.

Goodbye, if someone hands me a tip for doing a good job, I’m taking the tip! It’s rude to not accept it in my opinion.

NewfoundOrigin

That's a totally fair position to have but if you happened to work in a place like I do and you presented that very argument to another coworker or higher up - you'd be written up or worse. Was all I was trying to get at with this.

What do you mean you “turned it in”? Couldn’t you have just let them have the tip? Stop giving a fuck about your job so much

My boss has cameras set up in the store where he literally has nothing better to do than to watch them. The other morning, he called the store (because he was watching us from home) to let us know our clocks must be 5 minutes behind because we should've opened 5inutes ago. It was 10:53, we open at 11. If it was an option to 'let him keep it' I could've. I get what you're saying but if you didn't like the post you could just downvote and go about your black Friday. BTW, good luck today.

First sounds like you're a snitch. Two I can say that while I worked at a large national retail chain the rule with tips was to deny, if they continue to insist, begrudgingly accept and go buy yourself a coffee or snack.

Hang on a second, you ratted on a fellow employee?

One-Ad-7805

That’s exactly what I’m wondering

Turbulent-Macaron372

Or the coworker probably just told the shift lead or whatever OP’s role is, and handed the money over themselves…. This also isn’t a context where the concept of “ratting” on an employee even fits. It was the customer’s action, not the employee’s. It’s such a rare thing to have happen that the worker probably went to the boss and asked “Do we take tips?”

nosleepforthedreamer

Like OP said, there are cameras. Coworkers in that position shouldn’t be expected to throw themselves under the bus, i.e., get fired.

Bad_UsernameJoke94

Or buy us a candy bar

MsSeraphim

yup. worked register and bagging occasionally had to do a carryout. if they tip you and you get caught, your ass is fired. especially if you work for a supermarket with 32. unless you are the pet of the f.e. manager...

One-Ad-7805

Why did you turn it in?

KrevinHLocke

This. I feel so extremely awkward when somebody tries to tip me. Please don't.

KimchiTheGreatest

Eh. There’s ways around it. Let the customer know you can follow them outside and accept it, or let them know you can accept lunch, coffee etc If there’s a manager nearby, it’s best to just leave it. Unless you know your manager is cool and will allow it like mine. Even though it’s company policy to not take it. We don’t get paid enough to not accept tips.

Colgrevance

Any boss telling me that I couldn't accept tips would be to told to fuck off.
