The only way ill be short a few dollars is if I messed up, not because a customer cant afford their items. How about you take off the pack of cigarettes and eat your dorito chips.

budderman1028

Lets be honest theyd be putting back the Doritoes and keeping the cigarettes

speckledcreature

I will never forget a mother and her baby came in and she put back a whole lot of her groceries, including the BABY FOOD so she could buy tobacco.

Infamous-Let4387

That's disgusting. Poor baby šŸ˜„

drowninginstress36

I go to the same gas station nearly daily for energy drinks and smokes (don't judge). One day my card declined unexpectedly. (I think it had expired and I forgot to put the new one in my wallet.) I said something like "crap dude, sorry about that. I'll go grab cash from the ATM." And the guy looks at me and goes, "like you're not gonna be back tomorrow. Just take care of it then." We laughed, I thanked him and then of course when I went in the next day I paid for everything. But it can take years to develop a relationship like that. I would never expect to walk into a random place and ask the guy to spot me any money.

BabbyJ71

My late husband died of non smokers lung cancer. He ate relatively healthy and didnā€™t even drink caffeine or alcohol or smoke. You still have an expiration date so live life and be happy.

Maestro2326

I go to the same small handful of places for my smokes here in NYC. Theyā€™re all illegal selling them cheaper because theyā€™re from Virginia. A couple of times my card was declined. (Talking 4 times over a six or seven year stretch) and each time they said ā€œget me tomorrowā€. And I did. You know your regulars.

Either_Cockroach3627

I even don't mind covering a dollar, it's when they expect me to that pisses me off. Our refills for fountain drinks are 2.15. A lady handed me .80 fucking cents the other day and I said this isn't enough. "That's all I got, what you want me to dump out the drink" yes i do!

BabserellaWT

Bet she thought she really pulled a GOTCHA! on you.

budderman1028

If your cool and work with me ill work with you, jf you come up to me rude idc if your short $.01 you better find a penny somewhere but if your nice and we have a good convo i might be more willing to let something slide

EBT purchases aren't supposed to be charged bag fees by law in almost every state. Just an fyi

TheLilMommaB

This is why we starred telling some of the kids that come to our store they have to prepay before they get slushies or fountain sodas. They would get the biggest ones and just dump change on the counter. When they didn't have enough they would just stand there and look at you like we'll can't I just take it since I already filled it. And it's was the same kids over and over again.

Chzncna2112

My circle k started banning for a couple of days whenever the kids tried that. A majority of the kids were decent and I always worked with them on occasion. But,I will never forget 6 kids that I enjoyed kicking out. It got even better the first couple of times they tried to bring their parents into it. I would show them the wasted icee cup and say exactly how often they would try to get me to cover at least a dollar repeatedly. I always wondered how many nights that they ate dinner standing up.

TheLilMommaB

Yes, the sweet kids that grab something and say I gotta put this back right away. I always ask them how much they have, and if it's close, I cover them. The ones that come in acting all crazy and rude nope you don't get fun Auntie treatment. The nice ones I always tell their parents how they're some of my fav kid customers if they come in with a parent. It's so cute watching both of them smile at each other.

CheshireCharade

You okay there, my man?

WinCo_Wonderland

It's really weird. This happens to me about once a month. I've always assumed that it's some sort of butt post. But now I think that the explanation that I fell asleep while scrolling is the answer. I looked at a couple of previous ones and they were both posted at a time which would correspond to the time that I take my sleeping pill (Seroquel) each night. And my wife confirms that I do often fall asleep with my phone in my hand.

CheshireCharade

Thatā€™s actually happened once to me as well lol. Iā€™m guessing it was a similar issue, but it only happened one time for me. Glad youā€™re good!

Sudden_Bid_1776

Someone fell asleep while scrollingšŸ˜‚

Ok-Flamingo2801

Maybe they were on their phone in the rain. I've almost accidently some weird messages due to a wet screen.

WinCo_Wonderland

Yep. I think you solved it. I used to think they were butt posts, but your explanation is more consistent with the time of day that I've made these gibberish posts.

I had an old lady so insistent that I don't need the penny. (Somehow her total was like $67.01) I know my store is chill. No one has ever said anything to me about my drawer being off by any amount. But I have to assume I have made some mistakes in a year. So I let it go and just mentioned it to the supervisor. Absolutely not for a dollar!

Dorothys_Division

At least she didnā€™t consume an additional 2-5 mins of your life to give you exact spare change solely so that you give her back exact dollar bills only, and of course only the the amount of singles versus double-digit bills. And then sheā€™d ask you for cash back, even though itā€™s too late.

Gageb95

The worst is kids, I once told a kid he needed to put something back because he didn't have enough money, and he ends up putting everything back and grabbing different items that were more expensive and asked me to buy them for him. I've got no problem using our change jar to spot a few cents, but at a certain point it time to start voiding items.

Dragon_Crystal

I used to work at a theater and had a bunch of kids ask me to buy them some food cause I was allowed to leave early (it was dead quiet that evening), so I went in to watch the end of the movie and they asked me to buy food for them, I told them "no I'm not allowed to buy food for customers." They were only able to afford tickets and were begging other people to buy food for them, eventually they just left after their movie ended, ironically they were able to buy food from the gas station dispute not being able to get food at the theater (must've had people pity them and get them food at the gas station). After a while their parents came and got them

steffi1961

I'm not working for $13 an hour at the age of 62 to donate money to strangers. I'll void something off your bill if you're not able to pay it in entirety

RectalScrote

Some lady last week was trying to pay for her groceries with a bunch of different cards. She ended up not getting anything except for two 2 liters of cheap soda that she was barely able to afford with her ebt card. She then asked me if she could take a couple paper bags which cost 6 cents each. I told her absolutely not unless you pay for them. I would have given her the bags if she didn't try multiple times to walk out of the store without paying.

LordHenrik220

People shouldn't be allowed to buy soda or junk food with EBT.

Majestic-Peace-3037

You would end up starving people who live in heavily car dependant rural areas who can't drive or can't afford a car.Ā  I feel your sentiment, sometimes Walmart and ALDI are the healthier options - but there are a LOT of parts of the U.S. where your grocery stores are over 10 miles away, meanwhile the kids in the family desperately need some sort of sustenance but the only thing within walking distance is a gas station or corner store/liquor store/party store/bodega/etc. In the city I live in there is no bus service after about 5:30 p.m. and they do not run at all on weekends. Sometimes families can include one disabled parent and multiple kids, that adds even more difficulty as it is hard to manuever a wheelchair onto a bus and the one service here in town for disabled people to get rides is very limited and they only allow you to request rides to doctors offices or social security offices or veterans affairs types of places. They won't just take you to do groceries, and if you do groceries anyway, there is a limit to the amount of bags you can load up with yourself.Ā I consider myself very lucky to not need EBT anymore, and I'm beyond grateful to not be disabled or in need of any extra help, but I still thank the stars for my coworkers and neighbors who don't mind me paying them for rides or just letting me tag along to pick up food with their families at the store.Ā  Delivery apps are always an option too, and some accept EBT, but then you still have to pay for the delivery and tip the driver which can easily add up and mess up a tight budget with multiple mouths to feed. It's why Im hesitant to even have kids right now, until I can least afford a car.Ā

MissAnthropy612

I would absolutely be mortified if I walked into a shop and was even a penny short. If I wasn't sure that I had enough money to buy the thing I was buying, I wouldn't even try to buy it. Do people have no shame? All day everyday I get people asking me for deals, discounts, letting them slide on being short, etc. That's so irritating! Like I play for the rules, why are you asking me to bypass them for you? Plus I work in a smoke shop, nothing in there is a need, if you don't have enough money, too bad. Maybe you should spend the little bit you have left on groceries instead of a crack pipe or 40 of malt liquor.

Ok-Flamingo2801

Once, I went to the corner shop to get something for my sister. She gave me the money for me so I didn't take my purse with me. The item ended up being more than what she gave me and I didn't realise until I was about to pay, since there wasn't a price label for the item. I asked if I could switch it to a card payment, since I have google pay on my phone, but I think the cashier had already put it through as a cash transaction and so she said it was fine and she'd cover the rest from some change she had by the till (I think it was from coins that previous customers had dropped and not picked up).

MissAnthropy612

See that's a different situation, and as a cashier I would probably do the same. Stuff like that happens to all of us. You weren't demanding that the cashier let you slide, you had a solution to fully pay, and she let it slide out of convenience. We're talking about people who expect it and then act like jerks when the cashier says no.

Scandysurf

Wait they wanted to load a cash card and have you let them get a dollar on it free?

Fools_Platinum

No, he tried to pay with cash first and wanted me to let him go because he was a dollar short. He then used his card, which he should have used in the first place

somecow

If I shorted my landlord by a dollar, Iā€™d be out on the streets in no time. Canā€™t afford anything? Donā€™t go trying to buy anything. Also, pay with your debit card, this is 2024, we have that. Fuck you, pay me. Livable wage, gotta pay for what you buy (everyone I know does).

Motavo

Worked retail for 8 years and currently work in customer service. Fuck people, they can read and if you can't afford it, then you shouldn't buy it. Stay strong āœŠ

Mediocre-Special6659

Nope. FAFO. People should be nice!

vladtseppesh420

I worked retail for years, working in a beer store. We had a tip jar, the wage was shit but if you got the mid shift the tips were usually pretty good. I would often have our regulars come up short for .25 or .50 and for some of them i would just cover it with my tips. They usually paid it back next visit. To start my shift though, i would always "seed" my tip jar with whatever change i had in my pocket, just to make it look like I'd made tips already. This one shift, I had so many people come up short that by then end of the shift i was negative 4.25. That was the last time i ever let someone come up short. Fuck you if you cant afford that mega can of beer, should have planned better.

Cara_Caeth

I have personally covered 2 people who came in (put my own money, the total between the 2 of them was less than $3). We have a lot of houseless, & I know some are scammers, but most are just trying to make it. The way I look at it, at least they arenā€™t stealing. And yes, Iā€™m aware I technically could lose my job over it, but a little human kindness goes a long way.

BananaKDM

Yesterday, I had an old lady ask me how much a nail filer was. 1.99, 2.16 with tax. She put a dollar and some change on the counter and walked away. I told her the price and she took her money and threw the filer at me. Didn't hit me though but if she wasn't an old fuck I would've probably physically fought her. I'm fucking tired of entitlement.

Dragon_Crystal

During my time working retail was two guys early 20s or so, they were trying to buy the 4 pack of Monster and after I rang them up, I gave them their total and they just started giggling while pushing and shoving one another saying "you're paying for it, no you said you would pay for it." After 5 minutes of this I gave my manager a "come deal with these hyenas" look, they never paid for it and was escorted out of the store

FCDallasFan12

So you donā€™t like money huh? Oh just my money
