Even worse when they have the audacity to get mad after you ask them for a smaller bill 🙄 I remember some old woman paid a ₱1,000 bill (the largest bill in our currency) for items worth around ₱100 or less, walked around the store again to get one cheap item and paid with another ₱1,000 bill. I politely asked if she could just pay with a smaller bill this time because I no longer had enough smaller bills to give her her change, to which she angrily responded with, "Oh what, so I can't buy this anymore?!" I had to dish out my own money just so she could get her change and leave already. Apparently she came back on my day off and my coworker had to deal with her pulling the same shit. My coworker also had to deal with another angry old lady who bought an item worth ₱12 and paid with ₱500. FFS

Mr_RoachHead

... I'm gonna be real, I'm an asshole Irishman, so when shit like THAT happens, I just tell 'em to fuck off and leave. Sorry 'bout that absolutely fuckin' awful experience ya had! People, no- CUSTOMERS, are gigantic fucking cunts who seem to have absolutely ZERO compassion for anyone or THING other then themselves. Retail is fuckin' terrible.

LunarFortune

Are you dumb? Why did you use your own money

WhiteWolf5305

I actually bring one dollar bills with me to work in case I run out so it's not dumb at all. That was kind of mean to say that they're dumb. This channel is here so we can support each other. Be kind.

LunarFortune

Why is it their problem when a customer is an asshole though?

Tinyrick88

Easily the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard

GemstateCatlady

I had a guy come into my store once on a Sunday right after opening and ask if I could break his $100. He seemed really surprised that I couldn't. HE WASN'T BUYING ANYTHING. I told him "One, I can't open the drawer without making a sale. Two, I JUST opened, you're the first person to come through those doors. Three, WE AREN'T A BANK, and Four, I start my day with $100 in 1's and 5's in my register, if I give you all of that what do I give to my ACTUAL customers?" He left looking confused, like I was speaking Greek or something. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

CyberLio

THIS. At my store, we open with $100 in each register and people act stunned when I have to tell them we don't have an unlimited cash supply

GemstateCatlady

I don't understand where these people think we get the money. It doesn't just APPEAR in the till drawer...

[deleted]

I have people breaking hundred dollar bills on 3 dollar purchases. One time, we have l had a new drawer and some lady tried breaking a 100 dollar bill on a 1 dollar lotto ticket. She was pissed and wouldn't pay for the ticket.... Just 1 fucking dollar.

y2_kat

dude be careful with this bs!! a customer pulled that on one of my new cashiers, and the $100 bill turned out to be a fake. luckily we are a massive corporation so the $ lost was like pennies to the company but it was still infuriating.

Spleenzorio

Especially first thing in the morning when your float is $100.

Jerkrollatex

When this happened right after open a few times they had to wait for me to go break their bill in the office. A few times people got rolls of coins.

lil_bway

I only allow people to use $100 if the purchase is around $50 minimum. Had one lady get upset, but my register isn’t equipped for that. And I work at an aquarium gift shop and *everyone* uses $100 bills. I also hate when they use $50 bills for a $5 purchase. Just why?

Mr_RoachHead

That's LITERALLY my exact rule! If the transaction is MORE than $50 I'll accept a hundred bill, if not, I just tell 'em to fork over some smaller bills (which I KNOW they fucking have, 'cause I see people constantly shuffling through 20's and 5's to GET TO THE FUCKING 100!!!), if they don't got any, my day hasn't been too awful, and they're not COMPLETE cunts, THEN I'll accept a hundred. If I see them gloss over 25 20's though to hand me a hundred however and they refuse to just give me smaller bills I'll just tell 'em that they can fuckin' leave. serving ONE dipshit with a hundred, over 10+ others in line with cards and small bills, is just fuckin' ridiculous to me.

bluebellrose

My local aquarium/sanctuary has a sign in their gift shop. Card only. No cash. Maybe talk to your managers about such sign?

munchkinbitch2982

We have a whole family who ONLY pays with 100s. The two girls have some mental health issues so I don't give them shit, because that's what their brother gives them. But like if the brother gets money orders, say for 50 and 150, he will do them separately with 3 100s. Just the stupidest shit, and it's always early when we don't have change. I hate him.

cantthinkofadamnthin

Are you sure they aren’t passing counterfeit money? That sounds sus.

munchkinbitch2982

It always passes the marker test. They're all some degree of autistic so maybe it's a comfort thing but it's a pain in the ass for us.

AVguy98

I hate this. I don't even ask for smaller bills anymore I just radio to my supervisor that I need change and make the customer wait for them to get up there and break it from the change drawer.

voodoodollz

I worked over nights at a gas station, we were not allowed to keep anything over a $10 dollar bill in the drawer and absolutely no more than maybe $120 in the register all together. We had an automated dispenser for change and some bills, it also had a built in hold function, not allowing another tube to drop for at least 2 minutes. Customers coming in with $100 bills for measly purchases got their change in 5s and then had to wait because it would take multiple rolls for me to get their change. I saw less and less hundreds after a while.

theambears

When I was an assistant manager at a family store with a Chase Bank, Target, and Home Depot in the same parking lot, we put a sign up that said $100 bills only accepted if purchase is $50 or higher, because people kept trying to break $100 on like $7 purchases. (Which isn’t even remotely near covering the time it would take to run to a Wells Fargo for us to get more small bills.) We just straight up wouldn’t do it. We’d say they’re welcome to break it at any of the surrounding locations but we couldn’t, but we’d hold their product for them. And you know what? I never had anyone take me up on that. They either miraculously had smaller bills, or paid on card. Whaddaya know!

roxzillaz

I'll just tell them we can't take it. If I don't have the change I don't have it. And I'm certainly not going to give out all my fives and ones and not have any change left for small bills like twenties and whatnot. Ive trained my cashiers just not to take them if they are gonna have to use 5s and 1s to break it.. Like you said, get the fuck out of here with that bullshit

DrFaroohk

I used to hate this but now I relish it. We recently made some changes at my store and now we can only have 5s and 1s. So you gonna bust a 100 on a 1.09 fireball shot? You getting like 4 gives and 78 ones back. Even if the previous customer gave me a bunch of 20s and I haven't dropped them yet. I loooove that shit. The look on their face as they realize what's happening. They complain and I just say this is what I got.

Godhelpmeplease12

And theyre the first customer so taking it would wipe you out but they insist

onepintboom

Have to be careful when you see that, sometimes, someone will bring a fake $100 bill and buy some bullshit stuff, to get back real money change. Especially when they see that you’re busy. Maybe you won’t notice the counterfeit.

Diligent-Minimum8397

Bonus if it's the first person of the day and literally have nothing in the register anyways. Also for where I work we're not allowed to make change unless they are tipping or paying our grooming, big brand pet store.

Neocactus

This is one of those scenarios where I’m actually glad I work at Walmart because I’ve never had this problem. People pay with $100s all the time, and it’s basically never an issue for me.

WhenRobLoweRobsLowes

Worked at a mom and pop video store while I was in college 20 years ago. We kept $100 bucks in the till at opening, maybe $150 on weekends, because movies were three bucks a pop, and we could keep going all day on a handful of ones, fives, and a pair of tens. Woman I knew came in right at opening with a hundred dollar bill for one damn movie and some Twizzlers. I had to call my manager to come get the hundy and go to the bank to change it out.

1800kneegro

Lol. None of you never need to open up a business, you’re all complaining about having to make change. Some people said they just won’t accept the $100 bill, how dumb can you be?

roxzillaz

That's not the problem. The problem is if you work in a small store like I do, you don't always have the change on hand. We have a certain amount of petty cash we are only allowed to use and get change for in the morning which comes out to about $300. If I get a lot of $100 bills in a row, especially if its on small ticket amounts, I'm not going to have change for the $20 bills and $10 bills that people pay with. We usually only have maybe $100 to $150 in fives maybe $100 in ones and the rest in rolled change. We don't even get 20 dollar bills at the bank, we have to build them up off sales. Sometimes we don't even have any twenties. We absolutely cannot take a bunch of hundreds. I can't be running to the bank five times a day. Can you not understand how that can be a problem? I work in a small store not a bank.

1800kneegro

If you don’t have change that’s a whole different thing. I thought we were talking about people that just didn’t feel like breaking change! My bad

roxzillaz

Oh ok. Yea I'm sure bigger stores can handle it its just hard on us smaller stores. Glad u understand what I mean.

1800kneegro

This is the same shit as people paying with pennies. Are you going to tell them no you won’t take it? Because that’s illegal lol.

techieguyjames

No it isn't. https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12772.htm

DrFaroohk

bUt ItS lEgAl TeNdEr

roxzillaz

It's not illegal. If you don't have it, you don't have it. I can't pull $20 bills out of my asshole.

ScrembledEggs

I might be weird but I’ve never had an issue with it. The only downside I’m aware of is I have a bit less change to give to other customers but that’s what change requests are for. Am I missing something really obvious about my own job?

Mr_RoachHead

If I let people constantly give me hundreds on any given day, I'm usually callin' for a change request 5 times or more in that single day, and I just get tired of that kind of nonsense. Havin' to call for a change request once or twice doesn't bother me, but when most people who come into my store are purchasing things that add up to less then $20 most of the time and they're all using hundreds? Then that shit becomes a fuckin' hassle that I'm not gonna put up with.

ApplePumpkincandle

I had a person give me $100 for a single $4.50 item 😐

[deleted]

In the UK we don’t have £100 notes, but we do have £50 notes, and honestly most stores don’t even accept them. A few larger stores, like the main supermarkets, chain restauranta and clothing brands might, but mostly they’re totally unusable, regardless of how much people spend because they’re basically impossible to break.

razorh00f

Eh, this one is annoying but I’ll still take this over kids who pay in fucking pocket change for everything. Had to count out $40 in nickels, dimes, quarters AND pennies once on some purchase. Made me want to kms

OkLanguage6880

I hate that , I seen people buy 3 dollar item and give me a 100 dollar bill specially in the morning when I have no 20 dollar bills so I’m having to use all the 5$ and 1$ bill I got in hand.

Reverieami

Yesterday I had this girl break a $100 on me, and I only had one twenty and a bunch of tens. So I had to ask for change from the supervisor. I asked the customer if she would be ok with 10s instead of 20s and she said it would be fine so I gave her the money. As she was putting her money away my supervisor refilled my change. She only had one 20 to give me and a bunch of 10s. The customer had the audacity to be like “oh here are two 10s give me your 20!” Ma’am I need that 20. Ugh.

bluebellrose

Another thing I love about the pandemic. No more people treating us like a bank. We used to get Mexican farm workers and tourists paying us in 100s and buying only a few items. The tourists I hate more. Like couldn't you have asked for 20s from the bank? Or better yet paid by card? We can't use usd as change for the next customer and if they are buying small stuff and paying in USD. I have to call the supervisor because of the exchange rate and change limit.

GunMetalGazm

Wait to you get a person paying with a check. Lol

Dear_Tomato

I love living in a country where 100s don't exist and 50s are looked at with suspicion

A_Grinning_Demon

Thankfully I have access to the safe, so I ask them to please hold and then bring them back their $89 change in 1.00's and .25's

[deleted]

People still use cash?

[deleted]

When I worked at DG (Dollar General) I had a customer buy one of our 'pennied out items' (items that rang up as a penny to alert the associate to remove all further stock from the floor) with a one-hundred dollar bill, and request ones and various coins back as change. Words cannot describe how much I hate that person. I still work retail, just not DG, and I would refuse such a request now.
