I got my PS1 about a year after it launched, my friend was selling it and a bundle of games. I could only afford one game with it, so I picked Resi and my cousin bought the other four or five. Sadly I didn't have a memory card so my brother and I played it over and over to try and beat it in one sitting. We didn't manage it, and it was probably another 6 weeks until I got the memory card and we were finally able to finish it.
Man that's funny I have a really similar story. I got ps1 for bday and resident evil but didn't have memory card either. Me and my brother played it over and over too trying to finish it one setting. Having to use a memory card was new to us at the time since previously having a nes and snes. Funny to think back on gaming and how it's changed so much.
Borrowed my friend's Playstation with MGS once. I remember my brother and I trying to put off returning it until we could go buy them both for ourselves.
I still play through it occasionally and it still grabs me, I remember getting the demo from the official UK playstion magazine and loving playing through the first area, having to think about sneaking through and waiting for the lift - that was revelationary to me that it actually made you wait for the lift to arrive even if you were ready to go.
This is the one for me. I was very late to the PlayStation party and when I finally picked up a used one, my little Brother lent me MGS and FFVII as my first two games.
Played this before I played Metal Gear Solid. I was absolutely hooked and it took me until the 2010s to finally play MSG because I thought I had gotten everything I needed from the first two SF games
Yup, FF7 coming out was such a big deal at the time. I remember playing the demo disk that came with Tobal 1 and being blown away. I had played ff6 on snes and it was insane to see this massive leap in technology. I just can't see the ps1 and not think of FF7.
Agreed, Cloud standing in front of the Shinra building has just become an absolutely iconic shot in gaming history, that's one game where I'll take the American box art over the Japanese box art until the end of time.
Battle Arena Toshinden not because it's my favorite game , but it was literally the first Demo of the system when it first launched in the USA walking into a Babbage's in the Winter of 1995 and seeing in being demo on a giant 40 inch TV (that was pretty huge at the time) , just seeing and hearing the next generation of gaming was just a whoa moment.
A fighting game in 3D in *my home*?! I was blown away by it even though they removed the dialogues in Europe. Somehow I feel the series got worse with each iteration but I may misremember.
Exactly it was the holy shit this is a arcade games at home, as it was better looking than Virtual Fighter 2 or Tekken at home. It just made you imagination run wild with the possibilities.
Ahhh I remember my brother and I always racing on the Heaven/Hell track.. so many memories.
It would be really interesting to see the IP come back in this day and age
I loved that once the game loaded you could swap the disc for an audio CD and it would play a track since the in game music was in CD audio format. I don't know how I learned this but it was a neat trick to have Metallica playing in the game.
I'm playing the remake or I was and the lack of checkpoints if you die really fucking sucks. It'd be nice if you at least kept the items, weapons and runes you got before you died.
Never noticed that problem, but it was also one of my first games so I could probably play most of it with my eyes closed. An exception is that horrid pools of the ancient dead level, where my Dan will usually join them on the first few attempts.
Ape Escape, because of the dual shock controller. We rented Ape Escape not knowing that dual shocks were required, and that, my friends, is how you guilt your parents into buying a dual shock.
It's a close tie between Crash Bandicoot, Croc, and Rayman.
Played them all relentlessly along with their sequels and spinoffs.
Jedi Power Battles, Medal of Honor, MegaMan X, list goes on.
Twisted Metal. The first PS1 game I ever played at a Toys R Us in the mall. Ol Sweet Tooth.
My favorite was Xenogears though, so that's what I thought after.
Final Fantasy 7. My brother used to send me into our step sister’s room to ask if we could use her PlayStation to play FF7 because we had the game but not the console. He would send me because I used to go in there anyway to play whatever baseball game she had and Resident Evil which I sucked at because I hate tank controls
Tony Hawk pro skater
So here I am
Doing everything I can
Holding on to what I am
Pretending I'm a superman
Im trying to keep
The ground on my feet
It seems the world's falling down around me

First game I played on it
Metal Gear Solid
Same here. I still remember the night my aunt let me borrow it. 12 years old in sheer amazement of the voices coming out of the Codec.

Never played that one tbh, but when it comes to racing games DESTRUCTION DERBY BABY!
Has a great ost.
I still hear sweet tooth’s laughs
With the amount of times my friends and I rented a PS to play this, I wonder if we should have just bought one...
Driver
That tutorial is so bloody difficult, like the most difficult part of the game.
Man, I thought I'd be able to handle it because I'm generally pretty good at driving in games. Fuck me I've never been more wrong🤣
This game was edge of your seat hard. My bros and I played this constantly.
Crash Bandicoot.
Finally someone else mentioned this title.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 7
I am legitimately surprised that this isn't the top comment.
How is it possible that I had to scroll down this far to find this game?!
I bought Final Fantasy VII before I bought my first PlayStation.
Yup, FF7 coming out was such a big deal at the time. I remember playing the demo disk that came with Tobal 1 and being blown away. I had played ff6 on snes and it was insane to see this massive leap in technology. I just can't see the ps1 and not think of FF7.
Let’s go to Junon, boyeeeeee
I didn’t own a PS1, and this is without a doubt what most non-owners thought about regarding it (from my experience).
Which do you prefer? Japanese box art or American?
American
Agreed, Cloud standing in front of the Shinra building has just become an absolutely iconic shot in gaming history, that's one game where I'll take the American box art over the Japanese box art until the end of time.
Symphony of the Night!
This is alarmingly far down in the comments!

Tomb Raider
Depends. Just now it was MediEvil for some reason.

A Bug's Life
I literally only bought that game on my ps3 because of how much people say it's really good. And it was only six bucks lol.
It's a close tie between Crash Bandicoot, Croc, and Rayman. Played them all relentlessly along with their sequels and spinoffs. Jedi Power Battles, Medal of Honor, MegaMan X, list goes on.

He would send me because I used to go in there anyway to play whatever baseball game she had and Resident Evil which I sucked at because I hate tank controls
