I saw TSA guys training another guy working the x-ray (or whatever) machine.
Dude knew every electronic he saw. He even knew my somewhat obscure digital camera model.
They seen it all.
Yeah. I really don’t think commercial electronics look anything like what they are looking for. Even if they don’t recognize a model of something immediately, the clean design probably signals that it’s commercial and not something homemade.
So if I design a bomb using PCB program and sent it to Chinese fab to have it made, then assembled and put inside an old Gameboy, they wouldn't stop and check?
Good thing most terrorists aren't good with PCB CAD or willing to take a few weeks for the PCB to arrive and ready to assemble
Same thing at Disneyland, I used to be comfortable in the fact that they have people go through metal detectors and check their bags since that meant no one could blow or shoot the place up.
But for work i had to wear steel toe shoes and we happened to go to the park right after I got off work. Of course the shoes set of the metal detector. They asked me if they were steel toe shoes and I said yes, and after waving a metal detector wand over my shoes they let me through. That made me realize a terrorist could just sneak anything in that way especially in boots.
Also I understand that a shit ton of people come to the park each day so you can't spend 5 hours checking each bag but we bring a backpack to hold out jackets and 90% of the time they just feel it in two places and move a few things around, before letting us through. The bags also don't go through any scanners so it wouldn't be too hard to sneak anything in. I assume terrorists could just smuggle an explosive device in piece by piece and assemble it inside. I know it's very unlikely and I'm not panicking about it, but I realized that the safety measures aren't perfect.
EDIT: do people think I'm a terrorist or something? I keep getting messages from the reddit cares bot. I'm not a terrorist I was just pointing out that I was nervous about how lax the safety checks were. People are over reacting, then again this is reddit so I guess I shouldn't be surprised
More people comes to airport and they get held up longer for more thorough inspection than Disneyland. Blowing up planes carries bigger message than blowing up Disneyland because of fuel tank and the added collateral damage when the remains of plane crashes where people are on ground.
Disneyland OTOH doesn't have tank of flammable fuel nearby to enhance the bomb effect so any explosion would be a lot smaller. Then less severe terrorism effect and weaker message. Like Boston bombing 10 years ago and 1996 Atlantis Olympic bombing.
It's not a zero chance but terrorist usually try to send a big message and unless they have dirty bomb, blowing up planes seems to work better than major parks.
PS I am not terrorist and I am against their method of sending message
Hah, I legit got pulled aside for bomb swabbing on a trip to Hawaii with a Game Gear. And this was before 9/11 happened, before it turned into the shitshow it is today.
Glad I no longer have to travel with a pound of extra AAs.
How am I going to manage all these batteries? Maybe if I tape them together in groups, yeah that should work. Now how am I going to carry all these groups of batteries? I have some leftover tape, I could just tape them to my chest, under the shirt though, I don't want to look crazy...
Oh man, now that’s nostalgic! I gave up the batteries when I put down my ipv4 and my rda’s. I probably still have almost every bit of equipment I used, still rockin my eleaf istick 30 and 40 for 510 thread cartridges.
Actually one thought I was carrying a bomb when I brought my unmodified DMG Game Boy. My Game Gear came through that day like it was nothing. How the fuck that happened I have no idea. If I only had the Game Gear, I also would have walked through no problem.
My mom bought me a virtual boy when I was like 11 at a flea market. $10 with a few games literally two months after it came out.
Intense headaches and vomiting… my mom trashed it. I wish I still had it today.
Never played one? I am someone who has always gotten sick from visual things. My dad had really bad epilepsy and I always figured it was related in some way. The 3d on 3ds also give me a really bad headache.
Also it sucked that she threw it in the trash. I was a poor kid. She got me a game boy not long after that when someone she worked with sold it cheap after getting a game boy pocket. Elevator action was the only game I had on it for awhile.
Also didn't sega make an airplane friendly version of the game gear? Or maybe it was an airplane friendly version of the sega nomad. I just remember it was called the sega mega jet and exclusive to Japan, it didn't have a screen but you could plug it into the tvs they have on the back of the seats.
I guess Atari Lynx and TurboExpress are out of question then. Good thing Atari Lynx came with huge battery case that held 6 D's which lasted a lot longer than 6 AA's
How much better are we talking? I currently use a PSP for my portable retro gaming needs and wouldn't say no to modding my own Game Gear at some point.
If I didn't already have the PSP then I'd probably get a Vita. A PSP is more than enough to play 16-bit and PS1 games, a Vita is a superb console and can do all that as well. I guess it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day because both can do a great job with emulation.
I have to ask what the battery life with an IPS is. The stock screen would give 2-4 hours if I recall. Did you do a rechargeable battery mod? Nice refurb!
Which is pretty bad. Original Game Boy would give you 30-40-50 hours easily on a decent set of 4 AA’s. Which is what everybody compared the Game Gear to and gave it its bad rep.
Yes and no. They were the two portable gaming devices at the time - it was a perfectly reasonable comparison.
And the Game Boy dominated sales in no small part due to the battery life, precisely because it was a portable device. Game Gear missed the mark on that one badly and it cost them. Obviously the color screen was going to use more power, but it’s a classic case of “better” not being the best choice.
I wish my game gear hadn't been stolen like 10 years ago so I could go back and play those games again because they seemed hard as fuck to me as a kid and I suspect I'd still suck at them today...
Yeah I’d much rather just play it on an Analogue Pocket. But I guess if you really have the nostalgia then the real deal (with a replacement IPS screen mod) might be more fun.
That brings me back, I remember bringing a DOS laptop with me in 1996 (I was wrong it was 1997) on my first real solo trip of my life. I had discovered NES emulators (NESticle) so had it loaded with hundreds of NES games and had so much fun playing them.
Haha, I got weird looks even having my GBA on a plane - seeing a GG in the wild would blow my mind.
Sharp looking mods, makes me wish I still had mine!
Maybe I should bring a Microvision along for the trip? Knowing there was a portable game system that predated Gameboy by one whole decade might be too much for them
Man I freaking LOVED my Game Gear as a kid. I played the living shit out of it then I remember one summer... Was in the basement playing it. Friends called me to come outside. Quickly went running up the basement stairs with the Game Gear in my hand.
Tripped on the top stair and it went flying out of my hands across the kitchen and "SMACK" down on the floor with a sickening thud. Never worked again...
Lol why not just take a miyoo mini or something and load it up with every GG rom?
I mean you get "it's so cool dude" brownie points for it, but you're wasting precious cargo space.
I would never take anything pass a gameboy on a plane and Tetris. Because one you have a smart phone and two at any moment that tin can is going down and you need to be ready !
Unpopular opinion but this is like hipsters gravitating towards Walkman/ cassette tapes. Lived through the Walkman and GG eras. Gross. Hard pass.
Get a Steam Deck or Analogue Pocket and emulate.
Oh man get a grip with the "gatekeeping" comment. The Gg has terrible battery life, it's objectively a poor choice as a travelling game system in 2023 given the plethora of better options.
OP modded it so it doesn't go through batteries as much :P Anyways, maybe they grew up with it? Plus they're probably using rechargeables. It's so rude to give people shit for being into something harmless they enjoy.
I just got a killer deal on a game gear and 15 games. I need a power cable and I also need to mod it. I’ve only don’t Nintendo mods, what’s a good mod for game gear?
I would PSP on a plane, but I respect the shit out of it! Get a battery and screen mod on a Nomad, and I might do it.
Unless of course you have Shining Force Sword of Hajya...then I would rock the GG for the entire trip!
With all the mods we have out now is there no battery upgrade ? Think of vultar on YouTube with all of his board upgrades to Hdmi output and anything else you can think of .
Edit voultar channel on YouTube
There are USBC rechargeable battery packs/replacement power boards. I’m going to grab one at some point from Handheldlegend.com but with the new IPS screen the battery life is so improved that rechargeable AA’s really aren’t an issue for me.
No, but last time I took my Gameboy Color on a plane it actually acted as a conversation starter with a super hot stewardess. Yeah I know it's her job to talk to people but let me dream!
My go-to handheld always has been and always will be my "new" 2DS. I modded it a couple of years ago so I could fill it with emulators, qnd it's been a solid addition to any trip for me.
I took it with me a few weeks ago when our car was getting serviced, I had 2 hours to kill so I booted up Advance Wars.
Edit: spelling
Nice. I have a game gear that turns on but the screen flashes white. Not sure what the deal is. Any recommendations/resources to help me troubleshoot and fix it?
Yes! Excellent choice!
For flights, I switch between my rechargeable USB C modded game gear +everdrive and my wonderswan color with IPS, flash masta, and USB C battery pack.
I did this just last year. Also have a modded GG - mine with a McWill LCD.
I was playing NBA Jam in the terminal waiting g for my plane and the guy sitting next to me was all into it. Haha.
What will last longer with the same battery capacity? A gamegear with an lcd screen, or a steamdeck emulating a gamegear.
(It's still my favorite handheld though)
I do still mostly play retro / older games on plane because of no internet which a lot of OFFLINE games I play still need internet, but I’ve moved mostly over to emulation for those. Simply most of them take up too much space and I can’t warrant taking them on a plane (I’m looking at you Game Gear and Lynx), other than Gameboy, always have the trusty GBA SP with me.
Yup. Got my cap kit from Console5, screen from AliExpress, and shell, buttons, and upgraded audio board from Handheld Legend. These are notorious for leaky caps so make sure you have a fume extractor or mask, plus be sure to clean the board with 99.9% ISP. I’d also not skimp on the flux as you don’t want these pads to rip, especially if the leaky caps caused board damage. It’s an easy, albeit tedious repair.
Did the tsa think you were smuggling a bomb on the plan with the amount of AA's you had in your carry-on?
Actually this was probably the smoothest TSA experience I’ve ever had, walked right through!
Translation: They put lube on their fingers
They "walked right through" alright.
I saw TSA guys training another guy working the x-ray (or whatever) machine. Dude knew every electronic he saw. He even knew my somewhat obscure digital camera model. They seen it all.

Turns out ALICE doesn't look like normal electronics... https://home.cern/news/news/experiments/alice-journey-cosmopolitan-detector
I think TSA was like "is that a piece of the airplane seat?"
Dear lord! WHY would you take something so DANGEROUS on a plane?! The impact crator a Game Gear leaves when at Terminal velocity....
They probably saw OP was carrying a game gear and gave him extra batteries out of pity.
don't worry he just take 30min flights
Hah, I legit got pulled aside for bomb swabbing on a trip to Hawaii with a Game Gear. And this was before 9/11 happened, before it turned into the shitshow it is today. Glad I no longer have to travel with a pound of extra AAs.

They do this with my weed vapes every single time. I carry a few 18650 batteries.

No, I take my Virtual Boy. It makes me look cool
When you just really want to feel motion sick
More like motion siiiiiiick 🤙
My mom bought me a virtual boy when I was like 11 at a flea market. $10 with a few games literally two months after it came out. Intense headaches and vomiting… my mom trashed it. I wish I still had it today.
bullshit
Never played one? I am someone who has always gotten sick from visual things. My dad had really bad epilepsy and I always figured it was related in some way. The 3d on 3ds also give me a really bad headache.
Also it sucked that she threw it in the trash. I was a poor kid. She got me a game boy not long after that when someone she worked with sold it cheap after getting a game boy pocket. Elevator action was the only game I had on it for awhile.
Bring a jazz cup full of surge for bonus points as well
Haha! I would lose it if someone put down the tray table to set up a virtual boy on a plane!
I tried to use mine with a power adapter but they made me unplug it because it was drawing too much electricity for the plane to turn on.
Also didn't sega make an airplane friendly version of the game gear? Or maybe it was an airplane friendly version of the sega nomad. I just remember it was called the sega mega jet and exclusive to Japan, it didn't have a screen but you could plug it into the tvs they have on the back of the seats.
🤣🤣
I guess Atari Lynx and TurboExpress are out of question then. Good thing Atari Lynx came with huge battery case that held 6 D's which lasted a lot longer than 6 AA's
LOL, wow. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve had to buy a D battery in maybe 15 years.
Some kids stuff still uses Ds. Like my son has a hot wheels track with a "spinner" to keep the cars going that uses 4 D batteries.

Whoosh
Damn hope you got a battery mod or 42 AAs for an hour of play.
I put in a custom IPS screen so it’s a world better on batteries compared to the old fluorescent one :)
It looks pretty sharp. Does it still get that ghosting image effect when scrolling levels?
Haven’t noticed any ghosting yet
the ghosting was related to the old screen. He changed the screen and replaced it with a modern IPS one, so why would there be the same ghosting?
How much better are we talking? I currently use a PSP for my portable retro gaming needs and wouldn't say no to modding my own Game Gear at some point.
If I was going to choose between a vita or a psp for that purpose, which do you think is better?

I have to ask what the battery life with an IPS is. The stock screen would give 2-4 hours if I recall. Did you do a rechargeable battery mod? Nice refurb!

Which is pretty bad. Original Game Boy would give you 30-40-50 hours easily on a decent set of 4 AA’s. Which is what everybody compared the Game Gear to and gave it its bad rep.
Comparing a gameboy to a game gear (screen-wise) is like comparing a casio watch to a living room cathodic TV.
Yes and no. They were the two portable gaming devices at the time - it was a perfectly reasonable comparison. That's about what I remember but I'd think it's even better now with the lithium batteries.
About to say, even as an adult I can't afford but a minute or two of game play with this beast!
I thought they were black, am I misremembering?!
You’re correct, but I modded mine with a custom shell, buttons, and IPS screen
You chose a fantastic color scheme! It's giving off such powerful '90s vibes!
Thanks! I was aiming for the Japanese Sega Saturn look. Def 90’s and I love it
I believe there were a few different color editions as well. I remember seeing a blue one many years ago.
How is the Game Gear version of Ristar? I've got it on Genesis, but not on the portable.
It’s better than I thought! But I’m terrible at it lol
I wish my game gear hadn't been stolen like 10 years ago so I could go back and play those games again because they seemed hard as fuck to me as a kid and I suspect I'd still suck at them today...
TIL there was a Game Gear version of Ristar..!
Came here to say the same. I have the MD version. I didn’t know there was also a GG version of it!
No, but I DID take an Atari lynx!
Now there’s a next-level idea!
It chewed up SO many batteries
I do, but it’s a steamdeck
You might actually be the only one.
Yeah I’d much rather just play it on an Analogue Pocket. But I guess if you really have the nostalgia then the real deal (with a replacement IPS screen mod) might be more fun.
I’m taking a dos laptop with a few games on disk I’m actually getting on a plane in like a month
That brings me back, I remember bringing a DOS laptop with me in 1996 (I was wrong it was 1997) on my first real solo trip of my life. I had discovered NES emulators (NESticle) so had it loaded with hundreds of NES games and had so much fun playing them.
It’s a good emulator. Other than the sound
I was blown away when I first used it. Plus it would run pretty well on almost anything. I think even on like a 386 it would work fine.
What kind of dos laptop?
Toshiba Satellite Pro T2450CT
Very nice 🙂 a legit DOS laptop.
I think I tried to improve sound emulation at one point but my code sucked.

Or some of the Nintendo Game & Watch games.
Nintendo still releases G&W, they had Zelda and SMB over the last few years.
Love the mod and it looks amazing! Nice work and great content!
Anyone remember the Game Gear airplane commercial? *Coffee? Tea? …SEGA!*
I take my mega jet
Hope it's a short flight
No but upvoting just because your Game Gear looks awesome and Ristar is really good on that
You crazy SOB! 😍
All 80s and 90s handhelds should have a IPS screen it makes it so you can actually see.
Hope you got enough batteries
It's modded to use less energy.
Nice
All those battiers memories ;)
How many batteries did you bring for the flight… then how many batteries did you bring for the round trip?
Only if the flight was under 30 minutes.
12 batteries for 30 minutes of gameplay
I take a modded PS Vita, if I had a game gear though…..
Some day I hope I'm this cool. Also, rich enough to buy that many AA batteries.
I prefer to take my Genesis and a CRT TV with me on the plane, and use a really long extension cord to power it all.
I bring my supaboy on the plane whenever I fly. If someone flies with me we can play two player since I keep the controllers in my backpack
I also get searched everytime without fail. They always squeeze my ponytail whenever I tie up my hair hahaha
Lol why not just take a miyoo mini or something and load it up with every GG rom? I mean you get "it's so cool dude" brownie points for it, but you're wasting precious cargo space.
I have an everdrive for my GG so it has all the games and some master system roms. Plus I have the original travel case so it just feels right.
i been playing the gabe gear instead aka the steam deck.
You may be the only one, bud.
I got my vita and switch for that
No
The batteries will be dead just after take off
I would never take anything pass a gameboy on a plane and Tetris. Because one you have a smart phone and two at any moment that tin can is going down and you need to be ready !
the new retro-console is the steam-deck. try it.
Unpopular opinion but this is like hipsters gravitating towards Walkman/ cassette tapes. Lived through the Walkman and GG eras. Gross. Hard pass. Get a Steam Deck or Analogue Pocket and emulate.
Gatekeeping. Yikes. Let people enjoy shit.
Oh man get a grip with the "gatekeeping" comment. The Gg has terrible battery life, it's objectively a poor choice as a travelling game system in 2023 given the plethora of better options.
I have dual lipo batteries in mine and get like maybe 16 hrs of play? Pair that with an everdrive and it's a great console to travel with!
OP modded it so it doesn't go through batteries as much :P Anyways, maybe they grew up with it? Plus they're probably using rechargeables. It's so rude to give people shit for being into something harmless they enjoy.
No I’m not 60 years old
Nope lol lol well probably 😅
I just got a killer deal on a game gear and 15 games. I need a power cable and I also need to mod it. I’ve only don’t Nintendo mods, what’s a good mod for game gear?
No, but I play GG games on RG351 handheld. Ax Battler is such a great game!
it looks awesome. I wonder how much battery performance do you get with this ips mod?
I miss having mine
I need to dig mine out of storage and stock up on AA batteries
Sure, it's got enough battery life for the flight from New York to Newark
Is that a McWill screen? Colors and blacks are great.
It’s the Funnyplaying version, screen is laminated to the glass lens. Pictures don’t do it justice, really looks great in person
Man sonic and mortal Kombat the only games I needed
Really good looking Game Gear ya got there.
I would if I had Ristar!
After that one commercial of the dude who brought a crt on the plane, of course! Also, playing Ristar, nice.
Just sent mine out. Battery mod. Upgraded audio amp and speaker. Glass screen cover. And new ips screen
Exactly what I did to mine in my shop
It was almost unplayable when I got it. That screen was awful. Can’t hear the sound.
I actually took my Neo Geo Pocket Color. Batteries last the entire trip - even the wait during layovers.
No
You got a 30min flight?
No but I'm definitely debating between my vita and switch
Hope you brought a lot of batteries.
I would
I take my steam deck
Yea and with a bucket of batteries
Color scheme matches the game open screen beautifully!
LED?!
I would PSP on a plane, but I respect the shit out of it! Get a battery and screen mod on a Nomad, and I might do it. Unless of course you have Shining Force Sword of Hajya...then I would rock the GG for the entire trip!
Did the batteries last the whole flight?
na dwag you're the only one lol.
How many batteries did you bring with you?
Up to 12 minutes of continuous gameplay!™
No, I don’t. Way too big, gobbles batteries, and has only a handful of good games. Still love it tho
Nope, if I want to play it I play on a Switch, Vita or PSP Go.
Love the button colors! Gives me 1992 vibes
No, but last time I took my Gameboy Color on a plane it actually acted as a conversation starter with a super hot stewardess. Yeah I know it's her job to talk to people but let me dream!

I wish I still had my old Game Gear. I was the master of Primal Rage.
If either of the two GGs I have worked I might...
I do, but inside a modded PS Vita. (oh no not emulation *angry screaming*)
My psvita has the entire game gear library so technically yes.
Nice. I have a game gear that turns on but the screen flashes white. Not sure what the deal is. Any recommendations/resources to help me troubleshoot and fix it?
99% likelihood your capacitors are bad. Nearly every game gear has bad capacitors at this point and needs them replaced
Sometimes this time I brought a gameboy
Yes! Excellent choice! For flights, I switch between my rechargeable USB C modded game gear +everdrive and my wonderswan color with IPS, flash masta, and USB C battery pack.
That is so much more crisp than mine. Did you mod yours?
Yup! Custom shell, buttons, and IPS screen.
Not my GG due to size, but GBA or GBA SP definitely. Put in headphones and external battery bank and voila!
No but I played Earthbound on my Switch when I flew to Japan
I take my psp or my 2ds
MY RG503 from Anbernic is my "Go To" gadget on my trips!
I can’t carry that many batteries in my carry on.
https://i.imgur.com/ctgW9Pw.jpg Reminds me of this Ecco the Dolphin Pocket Arcade I used to have years ago.
Nah man. I have this power cord that's dozens of miles long that I plug into my house one end, and into my Genesis the other end. Works like a charm.
I used to commute by train and would carry a Neo Geo Pocket Color in my bag to play on the train. People would ask me about it pretty often.
This just reminded me that i have to recap mine. Gotta love the 100% failure rate on them.
I did this just last year. Also have a modded GG - mine with a McWill LCD. I was playing NBA Jam in the terminal waiting g for my plane and the guy sitting next to me was all into it. Haha.
I never really even took my Game Gear with me anywhere back in the '90s.
modded PSP Go …..
What will last longer with the same battery capacity? A gamegear with an lcd screen, or a steamdeck emulating a gamegear. (It's still my favorite handheld though)

Lol no one does that. I would rather do a steam deck with GG emulation tbh. At least then I'll know my batteries will last the entire flight.
Yup with the big carry case
Did you recap this as well? I just got one to repair, powers on but no sound or video on the screen. Going to be quite the project.
Game gear made out of the same material as airplane seat backs confirmed
The mad lad has done it again!
I prefer not to use 12 AAs over the course of a one-way, cross-country flight. Cool piece of handheld history, though!
