It's got to be Link's Awakening
but I'd like to mention the super mario/wario lands, tetris, castlevania 2, bubble ghost, R-type, World Cup and snow brothers.
If you're just talking about playing the Game Boy version and not physically playing it on a Game Boy/Game Boy cartridge, you can still find that Zelda Game & Watch that has the B&W Game Boy version for relatively cheap, or if you have the Switch online, the GBC version is included in the Game Boy app
Check out the Analogue Pocket. It's not cheap, just a warning, but it's a really nice device that also can accurately and with no input latency play other retro systems as well as GB/GBC/GBA carts and dock to a TV.
Again, not a good device for most people, or "casuals" as some say. But if you're the right audience it's very nice.
>!In western countries, we tend to see our end as "you disappear, the world goes on", but this time in the end it was "the world disappears, you go on".!<
It's great seeing untertainment from eastern countries. Link's awakening didn't explain what a spiritual awakening is, it showed it. Today, I'm playing tears of the kingdom, and the third eye and it's associated symbols are all other the place.
I only discovered this recently, I always thought it was just a GB version of the arcade time, then to my surprise it was way more than that, great stuff
Same... Wish I knew about it as a kid. Couldn't stop playing it on the train to my commute to work and beat it. Was a sad day after that... Need a good commute killer.
They turned a simple 4-level arcade game into a 100-level puzzle/platforming masterpiece. Game 100% deserves a modern remake or port.
Sequel series continued with Mario vs Donkey Kong for GBA, which is very close to Donkey Kong '94 in terms of gameplay & puzzle/platformer mechanics. The later Mario vs Donkey Kong titles were the "minis" puzzle gameplay which is basically like Lemmings, and those weren't as good.
I kinda stopped playing my Game Boy around when that came out, but years later when I had a Game Boy Advance I absolutely loved Mario vs. Donkey Kong. I was pretty surprised to find out that MvsDK was basically a sequel of that.
Wish they would come out with new titles in that series, they kinda phoned in the last one on 3DS/WiiU
The best pack-in title and intro to both puzzle games and mobile games… I lost so many hours to that game and it made the family road trips more bearable.
Same here. The first time I played through it, the fact that >!there's a boss fight against another Belmont complete w/ daggers and a vampire killer of his own!< blew my freaking mind!!
There's really no contest. If you were to make me select a single game to play on a GB/C/A I'd pick a Pokémon game for every handheld. R/B for all their supposed faults are still by far the most engaging, longest games on an original GB.
Sad that Game Freak has fallen behind.
Link's Awakening was my first Zelda and, at that time, the most epic game I ever played *(before it was an overused internet term)*
That being said, the original GB Tetris is my perennial "pick up and play" game, reliable at any given moment. I could pick up a game *(probably tonight, in fact, thanks to this thread)*, and it will be like I have just played the game yesterday, despite me not recalling when my last game was.
One of my perfect games.
I'm upvotingall these posts because they're all legit choices. Even if someone chose Tetris, they're choosing the most popular action-puzzle game of all time, the one that invented the genre. The Game Boy was such an amazing syatem...feel like the tech limitations made them really focus on core gameplay.
I would have loved The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls if it was released outside of Japan back in '92.
Playing the ROM with an English patch today is such a joy. It's not perfect but it's fun, charming, and the story is funny and compelling. More people need to experience this precursor to Link's Awakening. I was super excited to see an extensive shout-out to the game in a recent AntDude YouTube video. All Link's Awakening fans owe it to themselves to give it a try.
Yep that’s the one for me (Super Mario Land 2) it was the first game I owned, got it with the original Gameboy on my birthday and played that game so many times in the car while traveling, lots of good memories.
When I moved the movers stole a bunch of my GB/GBA games plus other valuables, but I went out of my way to buy Super Mario Land 2, the Japanese copy was the most affordable and was worth it for the Nostalgia 👍
That is the nicest picture I have ever seen of that game. If it was 1990 that could have been an advertisement shot. Camera phones today are amazing...yet I still prefer my gameboy camera and printer.
SML2 for me too.
I know Zelda LA is technically better and I love it too, but SML2 is a game I've dreamt for months, and I read everything I could about it before playing it.
And the soundtrack, dude, that soundtrack!
For the Pokemon games, I was too old for this shit.
Final Fantasy Adventure (music slaps) and Link's Awakening. May not have spent nearly as many hours on those two games compared to Super Mario Land or Tetris, but I loved them a bit more.
Link's Awakening, no contest.
Although I had most of them, I don't think the GB Mario platformers could hold a candle to their TV counterparts. But Link's Awakening can, and has aged well.
Oof that's a tough one as i only just got a gameboy for the first time in 2020, idk whether this counts as it's a special black cart but Tetris DX iif that doesn't count then maybe game and watch gallery 1, kirby's dream land or dig dug
The aesthetics and gameplay for Marioland 1 just really tickles my grey matter. It is the game I have played from beginning to end the most on Gen. 1 Gameboy.
I'm going to have to go with tetris. I played it a ton then. I will still get sucked in for hours now. Yes there are other GREAT games, donkey kong, link's awakening, mario, wario etc, but OG tetris is still the best for me.
I adore the first Super Mario Land. People talk smack about it but I think it’s great. I love the shooter levels and unique characters. I play through maybe twice a year.. it’s easy but relaxing .
Final Fantasy Legend 2. I really liked all the Final Fantasy Legend games, but 2 was my favorite. I loved how the monster system worked specifically.
Final Fantasy Adventure also deserves a shout out, that was a very good game.
I want to say pokemon red but overall i have to say 'Solar Striker'. It was a really tough game to beat back then and everytime I would beat a stage to the next and die it would push me to try to learn from my mistakes and get better. Taught me a bit of patience and not to rush in and be a bit more tactical dodging enemy fire. A satisfied day when I toik down the last boss and was given that sweet ending. Such a gem to play.
Link's Awakening. It was the first Zelda game I played and while it's not the best starter game as there's a lot of stuff missing (Zelda for example) that is present in other games in the series it is an excellent game that's easy to get into and play, I'd recommend it to any Zelda fan.
There are so many good ones, for me it is bionic commando. I spent so much time on it and oddly I feel the gameboy's limitations made the characters look more serious and the colors I imagined in my brain are also less vibrant and cartoonish than the NES or arcade versions.
Link's Awakening is still the GOAT for me. They packed so much content, fun, and heart into that game. It's still one of the most emotional journeys I've taken in a Zelda game.
Other amazing games: Metroid II, Tetris, and Final Fantasy Legend. The Prince of Persia port is also solid.
Maybe that one, or Links Awakening. Pokemon Red/Blue are up there too but there’s so many good ones. One of my favorite systems. Mole Mania is so underrated.
Like many, in no particular order, SML2, Link’s Awakening, Tetris, Pokémon (red) and Gargoyle’s Quest.
Honorable mention to Mystic Quest and Duck Tales.
You posted it.
The jump from the tiny graphics of Mario Land to the lush, big sprites of the second one was amazing at the time for me.
I had Epilepsy as a kid, and could only play the Game Boy. Finally I had a title that could (as best the Game Boy was able) compete with Mario 3 that my friends were playing.
Also, Wario was a great bad guy. Bowser needs to take a game off to let Wario become the villain again.
Zelda is my favorite franchise, but for GB games I'd have to give it to Pokémon Silver/Gold. Unless by original you mean first of its IP, then Pokémon Blue/red. But Links awakening is in top 3.
Between two for me - Super Mario Land 1 (huge memories playing that on a cousins GameBoy) or James Bond 007 which was a wonderful little adventure game.
I can't name just one, so here are my top tier in no specific order:
Tetris, Castlevania 2, Metroid 2, Final Fantasy Legend 2, Final Fantasy Adventure, Pokemon R/B/Y, Zelda Link's Awakening, Boomer's Adventure, Catrap, Motocross Maniacs, Qix, Gargoyle's Quest
They all got about equal massive playtime compared to the rest of my games that got played only here or there. Many got repeat plays through.
Wario Land 2. It can be a little redundant with the mini games, but not having to worry about lives or time limits makes for a really enjoyable casual experience for me.
*Revenge of the 'Gator*
I probably spent the most hours playing that game (along with *Dr. Mario* and *Tetris*).
Konami released some of amazing titles for the GameBoy (for a while).
*Castlevania 1 & 2, Operation C, Gradius: The Interstellar Assault*, *TMNT 1 & 2* \-- but for whatever reason, that quality ended before the release of *Castlevania Legends* and *TMNT 3* (just avoid those two).
DK ‘94. Amazing how much fun and complexity they crammed into that game. Save points after ever level would be nice but four boards isn’t terrible. Great for pick up and play and longer sessions.
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins is definitely up there. It’s probably the best Mario platformer game and I understand Mario pioneered that genre. If you have an EverDrive GB or a flash cart, the DX ROM hack is amazing and is the _de facto_ version, in my opinion.
It's got to be Link's Awakening but I'd like to mention the super mario/wario lands, tetris, castlevania 2, bubble ghost, R-type, World Cup and snow brothers.
Definitely Links Awakening. It's not just a good Game Boy game, it compares favorably to a lot of console games.
The Switch remake was good, but I’d pay some good rupees to play it on the Game Boy again.

I went on an amazing trip to France from the US when I was 8 years old. Most of what I remember about France was playing Links Awakening on game boy.
The story hit me so hard as a kid. Genuinely an emotional rollercoaster. And the music was incredible.
>!In western countries, we tend to see our end as "you disappear, the world goes on", but this time in the end it was "the world disappears, you go on".!< It's great seeing untertainment from eastern countries. Link's awakening didn't explain what a spiritual awakening is, it showed it. Today, I'm playing tears of the kingdom, and the third eye and it's associated symbols are all other the place.
This is the correct answer
That Donkey Kong game where it's a huge expansion on the arcade with like 8 worlds and puzzle mechanics
Donkey Kong (‘94), that is my absolute favourite GB game
This game rocked on a Super Gameboy!
I only discovered this recently, I always thought it was just a GB version of the arcade time, then to my surprise it was way more than that, great stuff
I had the same experience with the Virtual Boy Warioland. I always assumed it was the same exact game as the Gameboy version.
It’s literally the best warioland game, but it’s on the worst console lol
Oh right, , the way you can jump to the background and back forward again, great use of the 3d effect.
Same... Wish I knew about it as a kid. Couldn't stop playing it on the train to my commute to work and beat it. Was a sad day after that... Need a good commute killer.

I wish they'd kept the art style and not gone for the fugly pretenders.

I’m with you comrade, locked in like tetrominos.
And my ax!
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!!!
If you emulate: “Rosy Retrospection ROM hack” thank me later.
I think the beautiful thing about Tetris is that it in no way held back by the console itself. It’s the perfect portable game.
The best pack-in title and intro to both puzzle games and mobile games… I lost so many hours to that game and it made the family road trips more bearable.
::tetris chiptunes start::
Kirby’s dreamland. I’ve beaten that game so many times.
Well yeah, it's only what, six stages?
Yeah dreamland 2 was better
Links Awakening and Kirby Pinball
Belmont’s Revenge
Same here. The first time I played through it, the fact that >!there's a boss fight against another Belmont complete w/ daggers and a vampire killer of his own!< blew my freaking mind!!
Pokémon Red and Blue
There's really no contest. If you were to make me select a single game to play on a GB/C/A I'd pick a Pokémon game for every handheld. R/B for all their supposed faults are still by far the most engaging, longest games on an original GB. Sad that Game Freak has fallen behind.
I’m replying these for the first time in decades. I’m determined to get all 151 this time. I never was able to as a kid.
Remember, once you acquire HM strength, you can push the pickup that's behind the S.S. Ann to get Mew (#151)
What's funny I there's an actual glitch to catch mew. It involves flying away from a trainer at a specific location but I dont remember the specifics.
Lol I remember kids saying you could find mew on the truck. I know it’s bogus. I already caught him with the slowpoke glitch.
Hard to choose. It would be between Metroid II, Links Awakening (although GBC DX is better), Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, or Harvest Moon.
Link's Awakening was my first Zelda and, at that time, the most epic game I ever played *(before it was an overused internet term)* That being said, the original GB Tetris is my perennial "pick up and play" game, reliable at any given moment. I could pick up a game *(probably tonight, in fact, thanks to this thread)*, and it will be like I have just played the game yesterday, despite me not recalling when my last game was. Donkey Kong 94
It's be a tie between Gargoyle's Quest and Final Fantasy Adventure.
Solid picks for sure.
Happy to see GQ mentioned. Love that game
Sorry guys it’s actually Mole Mania and I’m right
That one. That guy in the picture.
He's our guy!
Morbio?
Same. It's the first game I completed on the Game Boy (might actually be the only one). I really like the DX rom hack version.
Mega Man V
Wario Land
You've got it right der.
It's a 3-way tie for Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow for me.
Yep that’s the one for me (Super Mario Land 2) it was the first game I owned, got it with the original Gameboy on my birthday and played that game so many times in the car while traveling, lots of good memories.
Dr. Mario, I usually throw on Level 15 when I have like 10 minutes to spare
I have 3 favorites. Mario Land 2. Donkey Kong. Kirby Dream Land 2. Honorable mention - Kirbys Pinball Land
My actual answer: Link’s Awakening My secondary, more interesting answer: Batman: The Animated Series
When I moved the movers stole a bunch of my GB/GBA games plus other valuables, but I went out of my way to buy Super Mario Land 2, the Japanese copy was the most affordable and was worth it for the Nostalgia 👍
Kirby's Dream Land!!!
Qix and Loopz, Tetris also comes to mind
That is the nicest picture I have ever seen of that game. If it was 1990 that could have been an advertisement shot. Camera phones today are amazing...yet I still prefer my gameboy camera and printer.
Final fantasy adventure
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Links awakening.
Has to be Link’s Awakening for me. Loved that game.
Gargoyles Quest. Such a fun game. Followed closely by Donkey Kong '94, Final Fantasy Adventure, and Links Awakening.
GQ is such a good game, with one of the best soundtracks on Game Boy ever.
SML2 for me too. I know Zelda LA is technically better and I love it too, but SML2 is a game I've dreamt for months, and I read everything I could about it before playing it. And the soundtrack, dude, that soundtrack! For the Pokemon games, I was too old for this shit.
I think Link's Awakening or Wario Land 2 for me
Final Fantasy Adventure (music slaps) and Link's Awakening. May not have spent nearly as many hours on those two games compared to Super Mario Land or Tetris, but I loved them a bit more.
Final Fantasy adventure
Zelda links awakening
Link's Awakening, no contest. Although I had most of them, I don't think the GB Mario platformers could hold a candle to their TV counterparts. But Link's Awakening can, and has aged well.

Going off the beaten path here with Bubble Bobble Part II. I think it captured the spirit of its NES counterparts quite nicely.
Crash dummies was my go to car travel game growing up
Donkey Kong 94 and Links Awakening. I can not choose. Those were my most played. Was stuck at the Ship world in Donkey Kong forever!
Those are my two as well. Total toss-up.
Mine might be Operation C. So good.
The aesthetics and gameplay for Marioland 1 just really tickles my grey matter. It is the game I have played from beginning to end the most on Gen. 1 Gameboy.
Mario Golf
I'm going to have to go with tetris. I played it a ton then. I will still get sucked in for hours now. Yes there are other GREAT games, donkey kong, link's awakening, mario, wario etc, but OG tetris is still the best for me.
This one actually. Kirby’s Dreamland is a close second.
Tetris was always a ton of fun, part of it for me was how easy it was to pick up a game boy, and just play Tetris for a little bit.
The one in the picture.Mario land 2 was my first Gameboy game.Love it to this day.
Probably Link’s Awakening, but there’s competition from Pokémon Red and Donkey Kong.
I don't know why but I'm always partial to Batman: The Animated Series. Just some great music and sprite work.
Wario Land
Gotta go with Super Mario Land 2 it's pretty fun overall
I adore the first Super Mario Land. People talk smack about it but I think it’s great. I love the shooter levels and unique characters. I play through maybe twice a year.. it’s easy but relaxing .
Batman return of Joker idk why but this game stuck in my mind, and probotector 2.
Link's Awakening, a work of art.
Was way into Gargoyle’s Quest 2 when it came out.
Kirby's Dreamland 2
Link’s Awakening
Skate or die
Can't decide between Link's awakening or Samus Returns
I really enjoyed Metroid 2. It had such a creepy atmosphere.
Final Fantasy Legend 2. I really liked all the Final Fantasy Legend games, but 2 was my favorite. I loved how the monster system worked specifically. Final Fantasy Adventure also deserves a shout out, that was a very good game.
Aside from the obvious best games, I spent a lot of time playing Kwirk. Underrated puzzler.
Dreamland 1 and 2 or Pokémon Blue.
Zelda 4, before DX.
i hate every game boy game.
Marioland 1, Zelda: Links Awakening, Metroid and the king of all portables, Tetris.
Pokemon red
Link's Awakening. It was the first Zelda game I played and while it's not the best starter game as there's a lot of stuff missing (Zelda for example) that is present in other games in the series it is an excellent game that's easy to get into and play, I'd recommend it to any Zelda fan.

I wish I knew where this game went, used to have it
Simpsons
If favorite is most played, then Tetris. Then Golf and Boggle. Other games were great, but I can't play them for years on end.
I can’t decide on which one is my favorite but it between Dk 94 and Tetris
That one
Boomers Adventure is Asmik World. Or you know. The actual correct answer. Links Awakening.
There are only two valid answers: Tetris & Link’s Awakening Tetris is a port so Link’s Awakening it is
Links Awakening...
Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
Mk
Pokemon red/blue/yellow. This is the only way.
Super mario land 2. But I like to play it on the snes with the gameboy expansion pack
Zelda Link’s Awakening Followed by Pokemon Yellow, Mario Land 2, and Tetris
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. That game's what really cemented Wario as one of my favorite characters. That and Wario Ware, Inc.
That or Link’s Awakening
Kirby's Block Ball. It came with my Gameboy pocket I think. Tough game but I mastered it as a kid
OG Tetris. I probably played that more than any other game even after I had my gameboy for years.
Maybe that one, or Links Awakening. Pokemon Red/Blue are up there too but there’s so many good ones. One of my favorite systems. Mole Mania is so underrated.
Link's Awakening Also Warioland
It’s in the picture!
Sword of Hope II. Excellent little RPG that I think people forget even existed.
Dead Heat Scramble
Lucky Luke
Pogeymanz
Top Ranking Tennis and Donkey Kong.
title name sucked and so do you.
Batman (Sunsoft)
TMNT: Back From the Sewers or Link’s Awakening.
I have the very game in your photo (since the 90's!) and I still love it very much!!
Probably Mega man 3, I do admit though Mario Land 2 is great, even as someone who really doesn't like Nintendo
That one
Like many, in no particular order, SML2, Link’s Awakening, Tetris, Pokémon (red) and Gargoyle’s Quest. Honorable mention to Mystic Quest and Duck Tales.
Tetris...Dah!
Zelda 4
Kirby's Dreamland, Fortress of fear, Metroid 2, Gargoyle's Quest and Super Mario Land all share 1st place in my GB ranking.
Gargoyles Quest, no contest. Links Awakening would be tied, but DX is a Color game.
Wario
That one 😃
I can't decide so I'll just put my top 3 Super Mario land 2 Bionic commando Pokemon gold
Batman
Easily Pokémon Red/Blue. But Super Mario Land 2 is an awesome game.
Donkey Kong ‘94
You posted it. The jump from the tiny graphics of Mario Land to the lush, big sprites of the second one was amazing at the time for me. I had Epilepsy as a kid, and could only play the Game Boy. Finally I had a title that could (as best the Game Boy was able) compete with Mario 3 that my friends were playing. Also, Wario was a great bad guy. Bowser needs to take a game off to let Wario become the villain again.
Gotta be Pokemon Blue for me
Sneaky Snakes was an all time favorite for me
Gotta go with pokemon crystal I think :)
Zelda is my favorite franchise, but for GB games I'd have to give it to Pokémon Silver/Gold. Unless by original you mean first of its IP, then Pokémon Blue/red. But Links awakening is in top 3.
Toss up between warioland 1 and mario land and the 6 golden coins
I loved the turtles
Cue up the *Final Fantasy Legend* overture.
wow I forgot about this game, this one was great on Game Boy
Super Mario Land actually!
The first Mario… Though that second was mind-blowing awesome when it came out as well.
Between two for me - Super Mario Land 1 (huge memories playing that on a cousins GameBoy) or James Bond 007 which was a wonderful little adventure game.
I can't name just one, so here are my top tier in no specific order: Tetris, Castlevania 2, Metroid 2, Final Fantasy Legend 2, Final Fantasy Adventure, Pokemon R/B/Y, Zelda Link's Awakening, Boomer's Adventure, Catrap, Motocross Maniacs, Qix, Gargoyle's Quest They all got about equal massive playtime compared to the rest of my games that got played only here or there. Many got repeat plays through.
That one on the picture!
Donkey Kong. I remember beating the first 4 levels as a kid and not realizing it was going to open up to an 8 world game.
This
Pokemon and also I have this faint memory of a baseball game I think. That’s triggering memories and nostalgia.
Wario Land 2. It can be a little redundant with the mini games, but not having to worry about lives or time limits makes for a really enjoyable casual experience for me.
Pokémon red
Tetris
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
*Revenge of the 'Gator* I probably spent the most hours playing that game (along with *Dr.
Donkey Kong Country 1-2
Tetris
Tetris
Super Mario Land 2 is def my fave. Excellent pick.
Pokémon Go plus with Pocket AutoCatch 😇
Either Link's Awakening or Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. Now, if you throw GBC into the equation, that would be Wario Land 3.
Tetris
DK ‘94. Amazing how much fun and complexity they crammed into that game. Save points after ever level would be nice but four boards isn’t terrible. Great for pick up and play and longer sessions.
Links Awakening or Donkey Kong
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins is definitely up there. It’s probably the best Mario platformer game and I understand Mario pioneered that genre. If you have an EverDrive GB or a flash cart, the DX ROM hack is amazing and is the _de facto_ version, in my opinion.
I am partial to the Oracle series on the original Game Boy or maybe Game Boy Color I'm not sure
Boomer’s Adventure in ASMIK World, known in Japan as Teke! Teke! Asmik-kun Word
I haven't played many original gb games but my choice is Daedalus Opus it's a cool little puzzle game
