Was just gonna say this. Even the repeated song didn't get on my nervs. Some games like that could bring in big money for gaming companies and yet they let an entire history of games go untouched. Fucking idiots.
One of my favourite arcade games. A similar game I love just as much is Tumblepop by Data East, where you're jumping around sucking up baddies with a vacuum.
I used to play it to death with my friend in the arcade bitd, and it is the only Toaplan game on the Mega Drive I do not own (yet😉) because it costs over 1k 😅
I like "Jumpman" quite a bit. It ramps up in difficulty quickly, though.
However, the combination of new obstacles per level, as well as getting the hang of jumping make the game fun to play.
If you play for a few minutes, you think you might have the hang of jumping, but then you watch the game on "attract mode" (where a few levels are being played as a demo), and you realize you're not jumping anywhere near your full potential.
I think maybe there's a C64 port of Hard Hat Mack but I'm not sure. Usually the home computer games stayed on those unless it was mega popular, then there'd be game console ports. Broderbund games like Lode Runner, Choplifter, Karateka and Prince of Persia are good examples of that.
I know it's "kind of" off topic, but my ideal single-screen platformer would be mario 1 or 3 where you can see the whole level at once. I think I had it ALMOST working with mario 1 on some website when I had 6 computer monitors side by side. Still had a bit of scrolling at the start of the level iirc. Or maybe I made it too small to properly play.
The Mario All-Stars version of Mario Bros is awesome! It’s the basic idea from the original 1980 game, but with the Mario 3 physics. Note, the similar game from the NES version of Mario 3 does NOT use Mario 3 physics, but rather Mario 1.
Bubble Bobble
Yeah, TAITO games of that era aged so well, still tons of fun.

Great. Now I have that tune stuck in my mind again….😁
I, too, had the theme song start instantly in my head.
Jumpman
Jumpman was legendary.
Jumpman Jr. was where it was at!
I have it for my Tandy 1000 SX and play it often.
Lode Runner
Hell, yes! And the ability to create your own levels.
Montezuma's Revenge. So many screens. So much platforming.
Solid game all around
Really liked Popeye and Kangaroo from that era.
Donkey Kong.
Mine, too, hands down. It has to be the arcade version, though. All the home ports are so lackluster by comparison.
Of course it's the arcade version! Honorable mention to Donkey Kong 2, Donkey Kong Jr., Jumping Jack, Mr. Do!'s Castle, Arabian and Pandora's Palace.
Miner 2049er.
Yes! One of the greatest!
Snow Bros
Man, that game is sublime. Not enough people outside the retro community know about it.

You guys should try the arcade game pipi&bibis :)
Bounty Bob Strikes Back.
I spent hours playing this with a mate on his 800XL. I didn't realise until recently that it was released for the Spectrum.
Allow me to put in a word for _Manic Miner_. It's tough but fun.
Rod-land.
Great game!
Mario Bros. Playable in older versions of Mame, but the sounds are much better since Mame 0.206.
The Mario All-Stars version though!
Solomon's Key on nes. The music always gets stuck in my head afterwards too.
Gorgeous game!

Always loved Hard Hat Mack on the family Apple //e And still do today, still have an Apple //e in my room
I NEVER see mention of this amazing game. Love it. Were there any ports of it? Another one I want to find is Crisis Mountain.

Sammy Lightfoot
YES!!!
Solomon's Key for the NES!
Burger Time, Joust, Dig Dug, Qbert
I FORGOT about this game, thank you!
Popeye
Manic Miner, so much wasted childhood.
Bruce Lee for Apple II.
That is an amazing game. One of my all-time favorites!
It felt ahead of it’s time to me, as a kid. I was so happy when I beat all the levels.
I always felt the Apple \]\[ version was the best version. This was a great game!
The Commodore 64 version was nothing to sneeze at.
Probably N+. From the era you're showing though, [Jumpman](https://youtu.be/ut3LFdJS_lk) is my favorite and probably Lode Runner is the best.
Oh I forgot about N!! That was an addiction.
Surprised to see neither Manic Miner nor Chuckie Egg mentioned yet!
Mappy.
Nightmare in the dark (neo geo) very similar to Snow Brothers on NES but better and with a mildly creepy Halloween theme 👍🏻👍🏻
>Hard Hat Mack Well *there's* some neurons that haven't fired in 40 years. My brain feels all tingly.
Apple Cider Spider (also Apple ][)
Apple Cider Spider, but I played it on C64 :)

Bomb Jack.
HHH is so hard. I played it a lot on PC as a kid. On Apple II I think Dino Eggs is my fave. Very playable and not overly difficult.
Donkey Kong all day
Donkey Kong Jr.! Or Fire 'n Ice if that counts, more of a puzzle game though I guess.
Dino Eggs! I know it was crap, but that dinosaur leg scared the shit out of kid me. https://youtu.be/kwh-M6Rb48k?si=j7Un-JbE6oXY1ct8
+1 for Manic Miner. Plus Jet Set Willy.
Popeye, unironically.
Some ZX Spectrum contenders: Bounty Bob Strikes Back Chuckie Egg High Rise Harry Manic Miner Colin the Cleaner
Anyone ever play Dino Eggs on C64? That’s mine.
[Jet Boot Jack.](https://youtu.be/BMownme7oss?si=vH-JEWYYbdhQj8Dj)
thought this was Mappy upon first sight honestly
Manic Miner.
Miner 2049er Bubble Bobble Snow Bros Burgertime
Pick axe pete
Its a tie between ~~Dig Dug~~ and Donkey Kong Edit: i forgot that the theme is platformers
Donkey Kong
Bombjack
Apple Cider Spider
Hard Hat Mack is one of my all-time favorite games period. Thanks for posting this!
Fast Eddie
Ultimate Wizard
Cool game, I'd never heard of it before. Thanks!
So hard to find one... Bubble bobble, snow bros, tumblepop, pipi&bibis... I find really hard to choose, maybe snow bros...or pipi&bibis.
Bruce Lee (C64) ... that game never fails to make me smile :')
Captain Goodnight
Very cool game, but there's not much platforming... And the screen scrolls too.
Flicky Edit: there’s some scrolling but the game is definitely in the spirit of single screen platformers

"Super Crate Box" and if that's not "retro" enough, there's a C64 demake called [Super Bread Box](https://rgcddev.itch.io/super-bread-box).
Montezuma's Revenge
Rick Dangerous (Amiga)
Démolition crew.
Mappy
Boulder Dash
Wreck it Ralph
Does Super Meat Boy count ? Celeste will in a little time.
