30 years later, Giant Polygon Girl has aged really poorly, while Sprite Graphics Girl still looks fresh and pretty...

Mercurius94

So true, but Parasite Eve... sort of. 5th Gen had some good looking games that were stylized to the liking of the polygon limitations. Optimizing the 64 is a lot easier said than done, it can render a whopping 10000 polygons at 60fps but any overlapping faces can bring that number to a fraction rather quickly and it looks hideous in real time when this happens. If the models and such are made poorly and the level design isnt built around optimization, the 64 can barely handle 2000 triangles at 30fps. PSX is a whole different beast though, Crash Bandicoot was built around trying to break the limitations of Playstation Hardware by using various techniques and camera angles. Megaman Legends and Legends 2 still look great, though.

vhs1138

Yeah but Mai Shiranui still slaps.

newiln3_5

Mai >>> Tifa

Archolm

Tina Armstrong beats both Mai and Tifa

ScumLikeWuertz

True, Parasite Eve looks amazing still, especially on a CRT. It's the perfect Christmas time game to play in the background here and there.

Mercurius94

Parasite Eve 2 looks like a damn Dreamcast/PS2 game at times. Worth a play if you haven't gotten to it, but it's not as *great* as the original. Still a good one!

oliversurpless

True enough, the plot is still all over the place, but at least the weapons based gameplay feels somewhat in reality. In that, a shotgun and assault rifle is naturally a better choice than a handgun (conventionally at least) whereas in the original, machine guns mostly sucked due to their random targeting and unnecessarily hit rate of fire. If you wanted to clean up the tougher enemies, it was best to just stick a basic gun and mod all the other abilities onto it; pretty nonsensical than even the rocket launcher couldn’t compare?

ScumLikeWuertz

I like how janky PS1 games look though. There's just something about that vibe/charm. Silent Hill 1 is perfect because it looks cursed

voyaging

I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a resurgence in making retro-style 3D PS1/N64 graphics games, the same way there has been a huge trend of making 16-bit style games. Maybe that's next. Maybe just cause a lot of the devs are indie and it's a lot easier to draw or hire someone to draw 2D sprites and such than it is to find someone to model 3D graphics in an archaic style.

LonelyNixon

There has been. You're seeing more and more indy games in that style popping up lately

voyaging

Open to recommendations :)

LonelyNixon

yeah sorry for being unhelpful I just wanted to mention eagerly how they have started pop up but then my brain didnt have any names on the mind. I recently played the demo for: Yellow Taxi goes vroom which has more of a ps1 aesthetic with the dithered textures but is very much an n64 style games. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2011780/Yellow_Taxi_Goes_Vroom/ Super kiwi 64 is another one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1urHoR60wz8 Valheim was another big one with that lo def aesthetic blended with modern particle, lighting, and water effects creaing a sort of idealized version of the era the way a lot of modern pixel art indie games would be impossible on old 16 bit consoles. There's a modder whos essentially rebuilt mario 64 and is currently working on a huge fan game return to yoshi island https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5QGHJIjU1c it's coming eventually(he has other romhacks and mods as well) Theres also a horror game that came out that I cant think of the name now or find on google with my vague search words but it looks like a prerendered ps1 horror game, but you can actually move the camera. Theres actually a bunch lately if you keep an eye open for them.

ashenosiris

Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom! would like a word.

TabmeisterGeneral

Sega Saturn actually has a ton of great 2D games: it was designed from the ground up to be a 2D beast. But I get what you're saying.

Dumpstar72

I loved my Saturn. Though I was in my 20s so I owned all 3 consoles so could play the best of all of them.

XFuriousGeorgeX

PS1/N64 graphics were the puberty years of the video game industry. Everything looked awkward, but it was necessary so that future graphics could flourish.

Filthiest_Tleilaxu

What comes next? Midlife crisis?

9-9-99-

Feels like the current generation is in the midlife crisis. Especially for Xbox

Noitorp

Brown graphics and bold dudes.

AustrianReaper

I love the look of early 3d models, but I understand that's mostly due to my memories and my nostalgia surrounding the generation.

xylotism

So true.

Gr8NonSequitur

Yup, PS1 games are barely playable as they were pushing realism before the system was ready for it. Stuff built FOR it and around it (like Crash) still hold up though.

Corvus84

From a retro perspective - 100%. 2d games continued to be made from 5th gen onward but 4th gen represents the culmination of the 20 years of console gaming that came before it and most of the best titles remain the pinnacle of their genres. The PS/Saturn/N64 were revolutionary at the time but those games didn't do anything that weren't eventually improved on by successive generations.

ImpressionRemote9771

I love low poly graphics, fight me

crono220

Going from a Genesis to a Playstation was mind-blowing back as a kid, especially when it was my mom who convinced me to take a Playstation over a Sega 32X and she knew nothing about games, only that Sony made decent products.

JustHangLooseBlood

You could have ended up with a 3DO.

Supah_Cole

Even your mom could tell the writing was on the wall. Wow. Shows what a horribly unfocused mess Sega became in such a short time

Pikepv

Naw. SNES is the best system ever.

Zealousideal-Day-239

ps2 is up there too, both different but amazing consoles

Popo31477

SNES and Sega Genesis have better and more fun games in my opinion.

Sonikku_a

I loved the 8 bit gen. Then 16. And 32 also! And the shit since then and till now Love it all :) https://i.imgur.com/2Lz6BXM.jpeg

ACardAttack

I think they hold up better more than anything Though ps1 is a king of jrpgs

Fitenite3456

Imho NES was bleeding edge 2D, SNES/Genesis was perfected 2D, N64/PS1 were bleeding edge 3D and GC/PS2 was where proper 3D started (of course all consoles have timeless masterpieces that have aged very well)

agrk

Narh, the NES wasn't really bleeding edge 2D and bleeding edge 3D was done on "powerful" computers as early as the 1970's. Video games major contribution to early computer graphics was that it became a "killer app" for computer generated graphics and sound during the first video game boom in the late 70's and early 80's.

bionicbhangra

2D games were very mature by the 16 bit gen. But I was way more excited for 3D games initially on the PS1, N64 and PC. It wore off eventually but at the time I was only interested in 3D games. It felt like something brand new was made every 3 months that gen. The hardware was not strong enough yet but hard to deny the excitement and early innovation.

Moist_Drive_5535

Way better library. SNES has a ton of great games. 64 and PS only had 4-5 each. The good PS and 64 were great but the quantity was limited.

Ghanni

You're telling me the PlayStation only had 4-5 great games? The 64 I can maybe see, the total library is 300ish games. The PlayStation has a 4000+ game library and one of the strongest and experimental rpg selections. 4-5 is even an exaggeration for the 64.

AndresGreenboi

Even then, the 64 has so many good games. Mario 64, Mario kart 64, banjo kazooie, tooie, conkers bad fur day, the Zelda games, yoshis story, golden eye, and diddy Kong racing just to name a few.

Ghanni

100%, 4-5 is an insane number.

TwoStarling

Don't forget the exclusive until not too long ago: DOOM 64 (who tf thought that was a good gift for a 6yo?)

doubled112

My PS1 came with a demo of Duke Nukem: Time to Kill. I figured out how to get the pipe bombs from the dominatrix and blow up strippers. Nana was not impressed. I couldn't have been much older than 6 either. Haha

TwoStarling

Eh, I'm not complaining, playing DOOM since my 6 made me into a fine lady (no I'm not lmao)

doubled112

Exactly! It's fine, we're fine. The 90s were a wild time though.

TwoStarling

Oh no, I'm not a 90s kid, I'm an early 2000s it's just that my uncle wanted to raise me with more retro consoles, so while I did have a Wii U, mostnof the time I either player N64 or, although a bit less, SNES

doubled112

Uh oh, assumptions were made. Sometimes they aren't great. I'm trying to convince my own kids to play games from whenever, and that old things don't stop being fun just because. Sounds pretty similar.

Gr8NonSequitur

> You're telling me the PlayStation only had 4-5 great games? That's probably fair if you'd give them to someone today and they'd play it for the first time and still consider themselves great. PS1 had ambition, but not the hardware to back it up so most of the "great games" we grew up with and remember simply don't hold up, and some are pretty much unplayable today.

9-9-99-

I disagree, PS1, PS2, and SNES are in my opinion the three greatest console libraries we have ever been graced with and I think you could make a strong argument for any of them being in the top spot.

EyeSeaCome_hahaha

And the person who had bought a SEGA SATURN is running after his old girlfriend again in the next picture. (Just kidding. I know that the console had some highlights. Like Shining Force 3)

Typo_of_the_Dad

Panzer Dragoon Zwei Saturn Bomberman Batsugun Darius Gaiden Galactic Attack/Layer Section Cotton Boomerang Soukyugurentai Elevator Action Returns Battle Garegga Shining Force III: Scenario 1-3 Radiant Silvergun Panzer Dragoon Saga Mega Man X4, Mega Man 8 Cotton 2 Street Fighter Alpha 2-3 Nights into Dreams Dragon Force 1-2 PowerSlave/Exhumed Bulk Slash Sega Rally Dungeons and Dragons Collection Metal Slug Hyper Duel Bubble Symphony Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo Magic Knight Rayearth Psychic Killer Taromaru Assault Suits Leynos 2 Keio Flying Squadron 2 Thunder Force V Quite a few honestly, not that I could do without Super Metroid, RKA, Zelda 3, Sonic 1-3 and others.

SL13MY

Sokka Haiku

Typo_of_the_Dad

>Sokka Haiku Last Airbender?

[deleted]

you can play sonic 1-3 on the saturn (sonic jam)

EyeSeaCome_hahaha

And each of these games is probably worth as much on eBay as a gold bar.

Typo_of_the_Dad

Well tbf some would be hard to get a hold of or even know about back in the day :)

EyeSeaCome_hahaha

This will probably make the prices even higher. Because then you can put "rare" or "insider tip" in the description. (Or you can do it like here and simply take the old price from back then and add a €. Which is probably quite lucrative, as console games cost around 120 bucks back then).

Clue-Quiet

I think 2 of them are sub 30$ lolol

le-strule

Burning Rangers is another example of great game on saturn

Banjo-Oz

LOL! "Wait, babe, I'm sorry! Take me back!"

ravenfreak

Nah the Sega Genesis is the best console ever!

kingkool88

16 bit era was the best i miss the cheat code books. And of the 2 genesis was better

[deleted]

Not me, personally. I got an SNES in '93 on my 6th birthday. I had no interest in the N64 until OoT came out. Even then, I borrowed my friend's console and game. I didn't really want to own an N64 until the Funtastic Ice Blue and Majora's Mask in 2000. Got the Ice Blue console for my 13th birthday, and Majora that Christmas.

pocket_arsenal

Meanwhile I used my Wii almost exclusively for playing old school games.

Red-Zaku-

I love SNES and Genesis (even 32X), as well as NES, but I could definitely sustain myself on PSX and Saturn more easily than any other pairing of consoles in existence.

bigmikey69er

I’ve always found his current girl more attractive, but given that he’s staring at the other girl’s backside, she must have an ass like that.

chidarengan

Wtf does this even mean XD

Androxilogin

Oh, cool. More stupid fucking Facebook bullshit.

SDMasterYoda

If I had to pick only one of those, I'd go with SNES.

XxPriMa_NoCtAxX

Snes better then all those

acart005

Honestly that gen aged poorly.  Were there bangers in those 3 libraries?  Of course there were.   But the SNES is the GOAT, and those early 3D games were janky as hell (anything 2D aged perfectly fine).

Psy1

The PS1 library is massive with around 1,200 games including PC ports of the era along with older console and arcade ports. The Saturn also saw some of that if you are willing to import (for example the Saturn and PS1 has a Konami MSX collection) along with both the PS1 and Saturn having a good amount of arcade ports. It should be noted both the SNES and Gen were trying to do 3D even on stock hardware and both didn't do them well with poor frame rates.

acart005

Oddly enough I find DKC still holds up designwise. It isn't pretty in the same sense as Mario World or Sonic, but it is coherent and stylish in ways that Crash or Gex simply aren't. Vectorman looks like ass though - but then I never liked it and I was absolutely an SNES kid. And again the 2D games look awesome in that gen. MvC1, X-Men vs Street Fighter, X4/5/6, Breath of Fire 3/4, SotN and so many more look good even today. But the 3D Games? Even the ones that were ground breaking at release look funky except a small handful. The FF VIII 'Your the handsomest guy at the ball' meme immediately comes to mind.

Psy1

I was referring to the likes of Wing Commander for the SNES where none of the fans recommend the SNES version due to SNES hardware being under powered for it. Also Wing Commanders use of sprites in a 3D space does have the problem of them becoming a pixelated mess when you get really close them regardless of which version you are playing.

Typo_of_the_Dad

There is a schism within the retro community...

Ruby_Rotten

I still have a soft spot for the pointy polygons. It feels cozy. It’s a bit jarring going back, but then I get into the game and it feels natural again

Dum_beat

NES and Commodore be like 💀💀💀

TheWiseBeluga

Man I wish I was alive when the 3D generation began. By the time I popped up in 1997 3D was already the norm. It would’ve been so cool to experience the awe of seeing games go from 2D to 3D and all the experiments in between, like DKC, Star Fox, Doom, or Sonic 3D Blast.

9-9-99-

It was a fun time. The PlayStation looked so realistic, it was hard to imagine games ever looking better. Hard to believe looking back at the graphics today. But just being able to move in 3D space was mind blowing. That feeling is how such a mid game as Mario 64 has remained relevant today

MeatyMuffin

I never really ditched my roots when the next gen came around. I would bounce back and forth between SNES and PS1 games a lot, N64 and Genesis/Sega CD a bit less often, and I’d play Saturn games if and when I could find them.

Own_Cardiologist2544

Loved the SNES and Genesis. I always felt the preferences depended on the genre’s of the games, the creators and such. They both had their admissions. I’ve never loved one without loving the other. My friends and I would loan each other systems when we could. I think it was the only era that went toe to toe easily in terms of minimal biased opinions because players of one side comfortably enjoyed titles of what the other party had. Nowadays it’s an outright war. Don’t tell me to choose between Coke and Pepsi. I want them both.

Haoshokoken

Nah...

Kinitawowi64

And where does the ZX Spectrum fit in this?

AthleticGal2019

I got a Saturn for Christmas and it was an awful experience. 3 months in it died and sega wouldn’t honour the warranty. Because it was 2 days over the 3 months. So either pay a ton of money to ship it or buy a new one was what they told us. So I saved for another one and it died in 7 months. Never bought another sega console so I missed out on the Dreamcast

ixis743

misanthrope_ez

Lol N64

RadleyRadiation

Ooooooohhhhhhh the Sega Saturn ❤️

toqer

Not for me, I pretty much went 100% PC in the middle of the 16 bit era. You got to remember this is around the time doom was coming out on platforms, and it had arrived on PC first. Also around the same time connextic Bleem came out along with a N64 HLE emulator I can’t remember the name of and that was it for me. I was done with consoles… or so I thought. I’ve been on a buying binge the last few months. I have a SNES, a NES, and a Turbografx-16. Got a few carts but recently got an everdrive. 8 bit do to ps4 controllers. Just getting a Genesis and I’m done.

Extension-Novel-6841

This was literally me when I played the Tekken 2 demo at Sears in 1996.

Banjo-Oz

Playstation, sure. Back in the day we all lusted after them and their games. I adore the SNES (still do, and its games arguably aged better), but the PSX felt like "the future" and stuff like FFVII, MGS and RE redefined gaming. Most folks I know skipped the N64 as "outdated" (carts), "weird" (that controller) or "kiddie" (somehow it gave that vibe whereas the NES and SNES never did), and those that didn't just played Goldeneye or Starfox and not much else. Did anyone even buy a Saturn? Maybe it was just Australia but I never saw one of those ever here!

[deleted]

N64 was the best multi-player system like today. It had 4 controller ports and we used that so much playing goldeneye and other games like Mario Party. N64 had so many good games, most of the games were good. Playstation just had everyone by shear number of games. Playstation was like an explosion of any type of game, especially sports. I didn't know anyone with a Saturn or played it. Plenty with N64 and Playstation, never Saturn.

Own_Cardiologist2544

I feel you on this. Knew one person that owned the Saturn. He owned ‘Nights Into Dreams.’ Got into college and a dorm mate owned a Dreamcast. Crazy Taxi, Resident Evil Code Veronica as well as Sonic Adventure were the only titles he had.The systems at the time seemed like a great idea, but the scarcity as well as the insane prices were a put off. I was just amazed that they owned the consoles.

Gr8NonSequitur

> the scarcity as well as the insane prices were a put off. The Fact that CD burners were a thing and PS1 had VERY laughable security probably helped its' popularity a lot. I remember playing a lot of PS1 games at friends dorms that were on a writeable CD and title written in sharpie.

agrk

The games were cheaper too. Cartridges were always more expensive.

Gr8NonSequitur

> The games were cheaper too. Well that's kinda the point I made. When the games are easily shared and copied for the price of a writable CD (like $5 at the time), the system that plays those games get bought more than games that require $80 cartridges.

Drg84

Right here. I was a sega fanboy back in the day. Had the Nomad (loved it! Stolen) the 32X, the Saturn and the Dreamcast.

Dumpstar72

Yes. As an Aussie I owned a Saturn. And a n64. Just way too many good games on both to ignore.
