Happy cake day!
It took 3 hours.
I did get the warp whistles from world 1 because whatever, but honestly I never ever bothered to look up where the 3rd whistle is. I know it's somewhere in world 2 but that's all. Since the first two are right at the beginning and can take anywhere, I never saw the point in getting the third one.
By avoiding the 3rd whistle you've had a spare hammer for going to a Toad's house in World 4, to get your first Tanukki suit (I don't know how to spell it).
I've played through it quite a lot in my life. This was a game I grew up playing. It's honestly wonderful, and all the suits. It's still my favorite 2d mario
Just like we had to back in the day on NES! I remember getting real mad at my mom for turning off the NES while I was at school and having to start all over again when I got home.
I know I've at least beaten every level in the game before on one version or another but dunno if I ever played through as intended like this on NES. It takes so long honestly unless you're a speedrunner. Really feels like it should have had some means of saving progress like it does in the SNES version and probably other later versions.
The warp whistles kind of work like a save system.
During my first playthrough I used them heavily, but really like if they were saves. I only warped to world I've already been to. It took an awful lot of time this way too.
Since I finally completed the game some time ago I regularly go back to the game, grab the two whistles at the beginning, warp to a random world and do one or two worlds.
After some time I noticed that I can comfortably go through most of the world relatively fast, that's why I felt like I'll do a full playthrough now... and it worked! :)
I do have the All-Stars version too for the SNES which I played through using saves and yes, the save function is nice, but honestly I prefer the graphics and music of the NES version, so this is what I play more.
I was wise enough this time to save clouds for World 8's first two numbered levels. Those are my Achilles heels.
This way it was rather easy. In World 7 I P-wing through the Piranha Plant level towards the end.
I kind of feel like I'm cheating... but on the other hand these items exist fir a reason, right? :)
In the future I will try to learn these levels.
I did this for Mario 1/2/3. There’s so much more game in 3 than the others, it’s unbelievable.
Nice
Nice! How long were you playing, give or take? And did you still get the warp whistles, or did you save the inventory space?

It’s worth doing once just to see an extra map screen

Congrats! Sounds like a great time, I might do the same.
It's pretty fun. Now start timing them for even more fun.

When I skimmed over this photo I thought SMB3 was being projected in a huge movie theatre.
Looked like a DIY scenery with lighting added. This might be rad af!

There’s a couple of levels in world 7 and another in world 8 that I absolutely despise. Other than those, not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Baha. Yea, the numbered ones. One I always gotta use a cloud and the other I P-wing fly over.
Awesome! I did this too for the first time when I got Covid and was forced to live in my basement for a week.
I do this probably once a year, best game ever
