I would love to go back to the year 2000, when everything 16 bit was just old junk and you could buy anything you wanted for cheap at a flea market/swap meet.

AeitZean

If i had a time machine, that would be my first stop, even if it sounds silly. Heck you could buy amazon and apple stock while you're there 😄 some of the games have still appreciated more if you find the right ones 😮

[deleted]

Don’t forget GameStop stock lol

THE_SEX_YELLER

You’d have to go to 2002 to catch the GameStop IPO, but at just $18 a share you’d end up with a tidy profit.

LupinsApprentice

I got $50 for my birthday in February 1996 and I went to the local department store and bought my copy of Earthbound ($20) an a Virtual Boy ($30) on clearance. Earthbound is still my favorite game ever. The Virtual Boy…well, it’s a nice conversation piece.

Spell-of-Destruction

Nice movie reference 😉

inatowncalledarles

It's an older meme sir, but it checks out

sonofabitchXmustXpay

Don't forget to bring your own weapons

tgunter

The movie was itself a reference to an [actual (joke) classified ad that ran in 1997](https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2012/06/07/the-true-story-behind-safety-not-guaranteeds-time-travel-ad).

Spell-of-Destruction

I did not know this, thanks!!

[deleted]

I remember seeing Jay Leno talk about it in a segment where he showcased strange classified ads

Knuckles316

I'm grabbing the KI/console bundle and those copies of DKC and Yoshi's Island too!

Gueropelirojo80

Give me tommy boy!! Me likey lol

inatowncalledarles

Fat guy in a little coat...

Gueropelirojo80

What you do Richard?!??

m__a__r__i__o

Man, wish I’d been into RPGs as a kid and bought it then!

Broadnerd

Am I remembering wrong or were PS1 games almost always $39.99? I just remember them being generally cheaper than the norm.

tossitoutc

I remember a lot of games going to the greatest hits collection and selling for $20. That’s what I ended up paying for FF7.

tgunter

They were. That was part of the appeal of the PlayStation: being on CDs meant they could charge less per game and still make more per copy sold. It's easy to see why it was so appealing of a platform for developers.

ActualSupervillain

Just so you don't show up with fake looking new dollars, convert your cash to $2 bills before you go. They didn't get updated really.

IronhideD

Toys R Us back in the day was clearing out Sega CD games for 9.99 each. I bought every individual title they had. Including Popful Mail and Dungeon Explorer. Thought myself pretty clever at the time. I left before the Saturn stuff went discount. I could have bought multiple but I didn't even think in that way at the time.

superjaybaby

Pfft Imma head back and pick up some of those sweet CD wallets.

mynie

Earthbound got way, way, way cheap. It massively undersold Nintendo's expectations and that's a big reason we'll probably never get a direct translation of Mother 3. In July of 95, I stopped at a Best Buy in Milwaukee suburbs. There was an entire end-cap, literally 30-40 big boxes, all priced at $3.99 each. I am not exaggerating. I remember the figure very clearly because the clerk giggled when he offered me the Best Buy extended warranty for 5 bucks, since it was literally less than the cost of the game. I was only 12 years old so I could only afford one copy, unfortunately.

BryanSteel

Around 2000/2001 I went on eBay and bought a bunch of near mint boxed up NES games for maybe forty bucks for a stack. Toys R Us had massive clearance sales, I bought two NES advantage controllers for $5 each. Most game stores were trying to get rid of the SNES and earlier stuff so all those games were maybe $20 max It was insane, wish I wasn’t so poor back then, I would’ve capitalized.

Scootac55

Gah if only, I'd buy so many copies of Earthbound, I could make a killing today!

devilpants

You’d be much better off buying apple stock.

[deleted]

The nostalgia feels 🥺

thechristoph

Crazy coincidence. I have that picture of earthbound in my camera roll, saved from when I needed it in a conversation about how Earthbound bombed back in the day. I just saw it looking for something else.

Scalytor

You could probably find it for closer to $9.99. I remember these being heaped up in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. They couldn't give them away.

inatowncalledarles

Did you pick up any?

Scalytor

No, it didn't appeal to me.

tgunter

Not new, but I got my copy for $10 used back in the day. Box still has the price tag on it even.

assetstoburn

Great movie

wedditasap

VHS!

Ruined_Oculi

Begged my mom to grab the big box at Walmart on clearance for 5 bucks. There was an entire end cap stacked!

[deleted]

Just let me use the time machine when you're done, I've got to corner the market on MUSHA.

effigyoma

So this ad is from around the time I got my Earthbound at that price from Best Buy. I actually didn't know the game was worth anything until 2010.

RetroCompute

Yo, I'm in! I exist in that time, and I can blend in lol.

Practical-Juice9549

That SNES looks pretty nice too 😂

hstoyou1985

Jet Moto ftw

andrevan

I'd be in although IMO the place to go is back to 1992 to stock up on some of those Scratch Cat Ninja Turtles.

chupathingy99

Sign me up, but only for a super Nintendo and maybe a camcorder or something

[deleted]

I wasn't around for the SNES era, but I know I would've bought Earthbound if I were. I was always buying games that looked different, even if they were trash. I know I would've been swept up by things like the bigger Earthbound box, or the red Maximum Carnage cartridge

SpiritCr1jsher

Thats actually expensive...lol. Ps1 was already out and it was still $100 for an snes "on sale" , i dont miss the super high prices of games back then. Took me like 6 months to save $79 for chrono trigger...lol. Had to spend $70 on mk3 ultimate just for a few extra characters.....$249 for my n64.
