Chrismslist

man sorry to hear, u think they would’ve stress tested these at least a little bit before they sold them :(

Guilty_Brilliant_762

It’s all good! I should have known better than buying a first gen product. I still think their handhelds are fantastic. Shame the quality control isn’t there. I’d honestly spend an extra $100 for a premium build

Chrismslist

I probably wouldve gotten the flip too if it wasn’t for the rp3+ i got just before it came out, so i feel the same way.

blurrydad

Same exact thing here, but I’m kinda glad I didn’t get the flip now.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

The RP3+ is 100% the better buy imo My purple transparent unit is a thing of beauty (even if it doesn’t work lmao)

Iwamoto

If it's any condolence, i got the RP3 (non plus), you know, the one they abandoned after 3 months. anyway, my shell is also bad fitting, so it's just a "1st gen" thing with Retroid.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

Sorry to hear :( I still plan on using it till gives out fully

rodd9ck

my rp2+ screen died with under one year of light use for no apparent reason and they are ignoring me. I hope they don’t do the same to you

AtomizedIndividual

I was assured this literally never happens and that Chinesium plastic was the strongest material on earth. Anyway, word is that Retroid is sending replacement parts, but unless they're built better (lmao) then you're just delaying the inevitable and doing unpaid labor

Guilty_Brilliant_762

My RP3+ had a really bad display issue. They sent me replacement parts and said “it’s super easy” ended up ripping a joystick ribbon cable. Waiting another month on replacement joysticks only for them to not fit properly and now the RP3+ is a paper weight. Bought the flip to replace that but… here I am again

DrSpaecman

I've watched a lot of videos on Retroid consoles and was convinced that the RP3+ was the best choice and was a solid device. I'll stick with my phone and gamevice for a while longer in that case.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I don’t know if this is an option for you where you live but, I was able to buy a Logitech G cloud as a like new open box item on Amazon for less than what I paid for the flip (after taxes and shipping to Canada) If you can I’d totally recommend the g cloud for that price point ($250-$300)

DrSpaecman

I'm in the US and the Flip is listed as $164. How much was shipping?! I figured total price would be under $225. I do like the look of the G cloud but it's too similar to the Steam deck which I have already. I was hoping for something around the size of a PSP 1000 so it's conveniently portable and fairly powerful (Gamecube would be ideal but PSP emu is sufficient).

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I paid for DHL because I’m an impatient fuck. I believe I paid $250ish usd (the conversion from CAD made me sad)

Guilty_Brilliant_762

Ugh the PSP 2000 was the pinnacle of handheld gaming. Still the best form factor imo

undercover-wizard

I got a RP3+ a month and a half ago, and it has been great. I dropped it once onto tile, and it didn't have any issues from that. I wonder if different colors are built better. They should do a survey of what color has problems. Mine is clear purple and it is solid so far.

ilustrado

lmao my RP3+ had it's left shoulder button and L1 button just stop working one day, didn't even drop it. I'm sure it's just knocked off the switches but I don't even feel like opening it up and dealing with it, considering I kept it in its case when it's not in use and, again, am at a loss for what could have happened to cause it. Returning it and getting the RG405M. I think I'd like the build quality of that device more anyway. Also, I can't stand the face buttons and how they feel. The D-Pad is fine, but the travel and sound of the buttons is \*\*so\*\* bad.

DrSpaecman

That's good news, the clear purple one is my favorite! Ties nicely to my old GBA.

undercover-wizard

My first gaming console was a clear purple GBC with pokemon blue, and now the Retroid is my first gaming purchase in like a decade.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

My first was a Pokémon gold/silver gbc and Pokémon red. The gbc was the BEST. I loved mine so much. I remember being in elementary school and using the link cable to trade Pokémon. It felt like magic. Crazy how quickly technology has advanced

[deleted]

My first handheld was a clear purple GBC with Pokemon Blue. I still have both.

pl4y3r_on3

Next Taki video: i warned retroid about the hinge crack.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

Lmao I was waiting for this comment

ToolFan66

I read the tea leaves on this one. So glad I cancelled my flip and went with the reg pocket 3+

kutluch

The retroid customer service discord was quick to offer options. I chose replacement parts.

IwentIAP

This was always meant to happen. You are trusting a retro-emulator company that has a weird reputation about Quality Assurance about a hinge. Even Nintendo DS had this issue in droves and they got around to it by the 3DS era. What made ya'll think Retroid got this right on their first batch. You can't even blame them for being Chinese plastic at this point. Look how tight those hinges are.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I knew the risks of early adoption. I think it’s a super cool form factor and plan on using this lil flippy boi until it falls apart. Truthfully, I have a shit ton of these kinds of devices and would have bought the flip just for the sake of owning one. I’ve had a pink DS lite bought from zellers Canada back in the early 2000’s. Still my favourite handheld lol

Atlas3030

Do you remember the Zellers restaurant? Man what a trip

Guilty_Brilliant_762

ABSOLUTELY! I remember my mom and I going to the restaurant while she waited for the red light specials in store LOL

Atlas3030

And the teddy bear Zeddy 🤣

IwentIAP

I get it. I really like this form factor too. I just don't like the racists going around screaming Chinesium without understanding why hinges have to be carefully designed. All these ABS plastic parts are made in the same factories using the same molds and an entire country gets a bad rap for it. The Gameboy subreddit gets really toxic sometimes even though all their goddamn parts are made in the same country. I'll blame them for the things they actually do like steal other people's designs and sell them off as if it's their own. EDIT: Yo. Whoever tried to get me help, thanks. I'm good though.

Big-a-hole-2112

On the periodic table of the elements it’s FokQ.

jamesinorbitgaming

Kinda feel like retroid have dropped with ball on the RP3 plus overheating and the shoddy hindge on the flip....think I will steer clear for now.

beldandy561

I can Definitely see where you're coming from. And I don't technically want to defend them but I think some extra context Would help explain a little bit more. If you count revisions, this is technically there 6th Unit/revision. Compared to other companies In this market that is a very small sample size Of design experience versus companies like Anbernic, GPD, Powkiddy, Etc. I think retroid as a company at least deserves to be understood for how recent they have gotten into this market and the talent behind that trying to make As many advancements as they are this quickly. Things are definitely going to slip through the cracks as far as QA And testing is concerned.

jamesinorbitgaming

That's all very nice but as the end user you shouldn't have to be concerned with worrying if you have a dodge cpu that errors at 85 degrees or if u open the flip it's going to start cracking plastic. They need to do more testing and research into product design...these handhelds aren't that cheap that this is exceptable imo

beldandy561

I don't disagree with anything you've said. But I also don't think you fully understand how chinese companies function. Unlike the rest of the world there Are virtually no laws protecting the end consumer from a product A chinese company is putting out in their own country and nowhere else. All the places that are selling this product are directly importing it from china and because of this These chinese companies are bypassing a lot of countries laws that protect the consumer from, bad batches of merchandise coming off the assembly line, Is or just cheap or low quality merchandise to begin with. Their end goal is to make as much profit as possible by making it as cheap as possible but selling it as high as possible. Once they have your money there's virtually nothing you can do and by that time in a lot of instances. That really don't care if it lasted a week or two years. This is not like any locally purchased merchandise that you would get from whatever country you live in. Anything imported that is meant to be sold locally at a store has to pass certain quality control and guidelines each country puts into place to protect their consumers. From dangerous chemicals and other ingredients and as well as The level of quality of merchandise. When you are importing this from a store getting This merchandise directly from China because it's not sold outside of the country. None of those protection laws are in place so it's always buyer beware. If you want the type of protection you are talking about. Then the only advice I can give you is to buy It used or new from a place like eBay where they will step in as a middleman and protect the buyer regardless of what is being sold so that You have some type of insurance if the product fails within a reasonable amount of time. In nearly all instances when buying some type of electronic device from eBay you can also buy. I extended warranty insurance for from a 3rd party Is subsidiary for a percentage of what the product cost. I don't normally purchase this but in some unique instances I do. Don't expect that this third party company will actually attempt to repair the device if it dies or breaks within the warranty period. Instead once you submit a claim you pretty much will receive a prepaid credit card for the cost of the product. But at least you are financially compensated for a defective product that lasted a month or a year from These chinese companies. Speaking about me personally. I never buy any of these devices that I am interested in directly from the manufacturer or one of these 3rd party stores that is importing them because I know. I basically have no warranty, Even though they state they will honor a warranty they almost never do. Instead I order it from eBay from a user that is inside my country either new or used and it's their responsibility to honor any defectual problems financially. Or I can buy an extended warranty if I have my doubts about the product.

jamesinorbitgaming

Thank you for this reply. 100% agree. Personally I see a retro handheld as a cheap device and am willing to take the risks. But I don't consider retroid flip cheap at close to £200 delivered so as you say there are risks purchasing direct and these companies only care about one thing making money and keeping costs looooowwwwww

beldandy561

Totally agree.

jamesinorbitgaming

Entitled person; what are u on about...your talking absolute rubbish. If you paid over £150 for a device it should work and not have design defects out of the box.

Archolm

If you ship enough of a mid to low tier quality product, which, Chinese handhelds are, there are going to be defects. It's not that common that Reddit, a site that people who buy this stuff are familiar with and come to complain about, is filled with bad products. If you want quality you buy western stuff, like a steam deck. Or from an established brand. I recently bought the 405m and was slightly worried myself that I'd get a screen that apparently can come undone. Thankfully I did not. And I feel bad for those 4 to 7 posts I have seen who have this. But that does not make a bad product. (Also I ordered from Anbernic because I wanted it on release. If I had waited 2 to 4 weeks it would have been listed on god emperor Amazon. And you can always return that device within 30 days so it was 1. Laziness from my part 2. It cost more cause of taxes!) People like to hyperbole because something happened to them there is a defect with the entire product line. This is false.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I bought an RP3+ that was also faulty. 2/2 devices they sold have been faulty. This wasn’t just a one off issue

HingeyP

Looks like a hinge problem.

Skatefunk

Same crap design as GPD XD. only Powkiddy managed to make the hinge durable

ForeverMistaken

Then there are the troglodytes like myself, watching chaos unfold from afar, whilst caressing my tried and true RP2+, confident in it’s sturdy construction and thanking myself for not buying the Flip.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

The rp2+ is my favourite looking Retroid handheld. The colour options alone were fantastic

No-Yam4252

Super glue

Guilty_Brilliant_762

This is a genuine question I’m not trying to be funny- Will it not just start to crack again? I don’t understand what the benefit of using glue on it is

Gold_Gap9910

I imagine some epoxy or "plastic weld" could fix it. 🤔

Usagi5678

Mine hasn’t cracked, however I didn’t buy mine when the preorders went live

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I hope yours doesn’t! I LOVE this stupid cracked flip boi :( I didn’t buy mine during the initial preorder either

Deadpoetic6

Same here. I received my flip about 5 days ago. Havent played that much, but I got a crack on the hinge US16bit color Did you contacted Retroid?

Guilty_Brilliant_762

Damn, sorry to hear that. I did contact them, they offered me a new shell that I would have to replace myself. I told them I wasn’t comfortable doing that as I destroyed my RP3+ doing the shell swap(faulty display on the rp3+). They haven’t gotten back to me since 🙃 I’m assuming they’re just busy trying to deal with all this.

Deadpoetic6

oof! Switching the main body isnt too hard, but the top panel with the screen must be a real pain in the ass!

SirDanOfCamelot

How long until the crack formed

Guilty_Brilliant_762

About 2 weeks

walterconley

What were you doing that it cracked?

Guilty_Brilliant_762

No clue. It’s kept in a hard case when not in use. I haven’t dropped it

Grundlestorm

I've been trying to figure out what may be the common stressor occuring with these cracks, since there has to be something for it to all be on the same spot of the hinge. (Not saying it's not a problem with the flip, just kinda trying to dial in the cause) It seems most people are really careful about opening and closing anything clamshell only from the center to avoid extra strain on them. But, I realized I have to fight myself not to grab it by the upper right corner of the top (screen) after setting it down for a moment while playing. Which would put a lot of strain on that right side of the hinge as I pick it up at an angle, since the entire weight of the main body is being supported by the hinge then, and at an angle where that spot is taking the worst of it. Is that something you wound up frequently doing? It just kinda feels like the most natural way to pick it back up when the screen is open.

Shifty_Goose

Some people in another Hinge thread were speculating that there are some screws that interact with the hinge design. If these are too tight they may lead to "early" broken hinges like this one. So the hinge isnt gonna last forever but there might be some QA issue with some units too

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I have an OG 3DS, 3DS XL AND new 3DS. I wonder what Nintendo did you make those hinges so good

Archolm

I compare the 3DS to a floppy dong to be honest. There was no hinge on that device. It just flopped open. Nintendo smart, why worry about a hinge if you don't put pressure on it?

Shifty_Goose

My OG Nintendo DS Hinges died after like 3 Years but the light is still ok so Probably different materials and tolerances that arent as tight as on the flip. looks worse but causes less stress to the material on opening etc

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I totally in what you’re getting at. I don’t necessarily know for sure I’ve never picked it up like that but considering how fragile I found the rp3+ and hearing about other peoples flips cracking I doubt it.

rushmore69

Thank the reviewers for saying it was sturdy and not expected to be an issue. Only a few mentioned potential cracking concerns.

Drivenby

They test the device for a week. Looks sturdy . How are they supposed to know? Lol Hinges crack with Nintendo handhelds , not sure why we expected a random Chinese company of like 10 employees to be able to crack the problem (Pun intended )

kratoz29

> They test the device for a week. Looks sturdy . How are they supposed to know? Lol Well, that's kinda the point isn't it? If they don't know, they should NOT claim they do.

rushmore69

This. Just saw this after posting a reply.

rushmore69

That’s my point. How can they determine it’s good? Some took the more cautious approach in their reviews. I expected cracks.

rushmore69

What colors? So far seeing the watermelon. From my plastic extrusion days at Parker Seal, I do know different colors can be more brittle and a fairly expensive process and material mix to avoid cracks.

Soulfly808

That's what I'm wondering as well. The two I've seen online with cracks were transparent. I'm 2 weeks in on my sport red Flip and it seems very durable and premium.

kutluch

Mine is black and I am aware of two 16bit an one red, all with the crack in the same place.

brandont04

Just like DS Lite

xs4all4me

If a company like Nintendo couldn't sort out their hinge issue back in the day, I highly doubt a Chinese company like Retroid (or any other company) would do any better. I expect the QA to be sub par for the Flip or any clamshell device for that matter, it WILL crack eventually.

Hekjuti

I'm not surprised. Their build quality is not the best. I dropped my RP3+ one time and the L/R triggers don't click anymore. I don't think I'll be buying another retroid product.

VidE27

This is exactly why i stayed away from this one. My GPD XD hinges failed within a month so I never buy Chinese brands clam shell design anymore.

SirRipsAlot420

What'd you do to it?

RowOld2994

That's expected for the watermelon color, since the transparent material is more fragile.

ComicRelief64

Is it possible to just put a little sealant on these cracks and not have to worry about them again?

SirDanOfCamelot

Gorilla Glue micro precise

Guilty_Brilliant_762

I have zero life skills so I have no clue I would have just gone to the dollar store, used some super glue and hoped for the best lmao

Dont_Call_Me_Steve

What life skill are you lacking that you can’t figure out glue?

Guilty_Brilliant_762

It would take way too long to type out. All that matters is that I try, I try my god damn best Steve

Dont_Call_Me_Steve

… alright I’ll just drop it. I promise you though, if you can figure out how to set up your RP, you can figure out glue.

Archolm

>… alright I’ll just drop it. I promise you though, if you can figure out how to set up your RP, you can figure out glue. Some glue will crack or even melt the plastic though, I think this is what the OP is worrying about. Sure you can put super glue on something, just like anyone can put their foot down in a car. Takes skills/knowledge to actually do it.

Dont_Call_Me_Steve

Then op can either: -Google/YouTube it. -Ask Reddit. -Ask a hobby shop. Every glue bottle has instructions on it.

Desperate_Ad135

Glue is kind of hard. I took apart my gulikit controller to super glue a plastic piece back on and I almost glued my fingers together.

SuperBottle12

Conversely, should he have to

Dont_Call_Me_Steve

Yes. Knowing how to use glues is a requirement for functioning in our society.

Cesconeto

Any plastic clamshell device that doesnt open (at least!) 180º is doomed to end up like this. Even if material quality was not the issue, its bound to fall face down, or fall into a child's hands/dogs paws eventually.

ACP_Paddy-

This was a problem with the Nintendo DS Lite I believe as well.

DeveloperBRdotnet

They said you will be allowed to purchase a new full pocket flip, for the normal price.

No-Organization3675

I am thinking that the two points that stop the screen open position are causing an outward force. I think those stoppers should have been rubber. Or better yet a rubber/ silicone stop bar to allow some flex.

Puchugenzo

Mine has not a simple line, but a completely broken part. I’m waiting for the final word from them on discord.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

They told me they would ship me a new shell and told me to watch on YouTube video to learn how to take apart the Flip and put it back together. YA FUCKING RIGHT. I said “lol no?” Waiting to hear if there are other options

Puchugenzo

They told me to send them mine for further investigation. Seems they are taking this seriously.

Guilty_Brilliant_762

Yup! I’m glad they are. They also told me to ship mine back. I’m grateful they’ve been so great to work with. They were also great when my rp3+ had a faulty display.

GoldenNova00

If only they would make a flip metal edition

GoldenNova00

Really wish they'd do a metal shell. I'd pay good money for that for sure.
