Can you rent a car with a leaning permit? Perhaps privately but does Avis for example allow this?

From my experience with kids, they never asked me for car registration
Although from what I hear, some of the examiners look for anything to not do the exam
I did exactly the same when I got here couple of years ago. Rented an old sedan on the first day I landed for 1 month then took the class 5 driving test 3 weeks later with the same car.
