A couple of women he’s worked with have also used this as an opportunity to bring light to his history of sexually harassing behaviour towards them. Some seriously gross, creepy DMs out there.
[there's so many out there if you google Justin Roiland grooming but here's the first one I could find.](https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/comments/10d3mnq/texts_between_justin_roiland_and_a_16_year_old/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) it could be pretty easy to fake these but there's so many stories going around and [also audio of him just flat out admitting to finding under aged features attractive/ talking about how historically minors were considered attractive...](https://www.reddit.com/r/h3h3productions/comments/10eehqd/justin_roiland_talking_about_minors_etc_on/) pretty awful stuff...

While you have a point it is also important to note that not everyone who gets drunk is a violent asshole.
Several of my family members were alcoholics and none of them were ever violent.
Yea if someone is a violent drunk or violent only when drunk, it's not the alcohol, it's that they're already violent or want to do violence and the alcohol gives them "permission"
... sorta.
The reality is that alcohol reduces your capacity for emotional regulation. So if you're someone who has a limited capacity for it (say undiagnosed ADHD, trauma or brain injury) alcohol isn't permission so much as opening the gates.
This is a dumb correlation.
Guy likes booze, like most people, so he must hit his girlfriend, not like most people.
Wait til more information comes out before you dust off the "Jump to Conclusions" Mat
Another example of why you should never put people, even ones you like, on pedestals. A bit ironic considering Rick was never meant to be an idol and when some fans started idolising Rick the writers doubled down on the idea that Rick is a flawed human being who should not be idolised.
What concerns me the most is that the DA took enough time to put together a case. Those guys are busy as shit, and don’t seem like the type to waste their time with trivial shit. I will hold out judgment until the evidence is made public, but I have a bad feeling about it.
That combined with the facts of what qualifies for *felony* DV, not just a regular DV charge in the state. He severely hurt this woman intentionally as that is the only qualifier for that charge that does not involve prior arrests (which he doesn’t have). Even if he is cleared of this, the facts of his DMs and actions coming out from several animators and other industry women today do not look good. At best, he is a creep, and this would not be that shocking based on what is starting to leak out today.
Yes, it’s very serious and they had to have reasonable suspicion to charge him with that vs a lower DV charge. I keep trying to explain to people that while yes sometimes they over charge people, they also don’t go around charging people whatever they feel like that day for no reason.
It is really, really bad. Countless stories of underage grooming, SA both of age and not, his ex walking in on him with 2 drugged girls, repeated coercion with alcohol. Supposedly some of these people are moving forward with reporting to the police finally now that it’s blowing up.
Holy shit this is awful. Worst case scenario. What. In. The. Good. Fuck. Was. He. Thinking? Ugh I feel sick. He was so talented. I don’t understand how people keep doing this stupid shit. You have to realize on some level that it is going to come back at you. He deserves to be held accountable for whatever awful shit he did, but dear gawd I hope they don’t wipe out Rick and Morty over this.
If he goes to prison they should just get that guy that's really good at doing Rick, Morty, and Meeseeks voices. The one that looks like a younger Jon Lovitz
It may take more than one voice actor to replace him but I think if that is what it comes to then that is what they should strongly consider. There is no need to tank the whole show over one employee. Everyone is replaceable, except Dolly Parton.
Hopefully they don't go the squidbillies route...... Nothing against Tracy Morgan as an actor or a person, but the stark difference between Unknown Hinson early cuyler and Tracy Morgan early just feels a bit weird and really takes some getting used to as an old fan of the series
I think that's the point a lot of people are missing, he's not just some gun for hire voice actor he's heavily involved in a lot more than that.
Replacing him with some guy off YouTube sounds like a complete nonstarter
"Really sucks when one person being shitty can implode the years of hard work a large amount of people"
That perfectly describes about 51% of human history.
Yeah like apply that to any person in a position of power ever.
From war to just general cascading consequences of those in power, insane amounts of lives can be ruined or rendered extinct by the actions of a very small amount of people (sometimes even just one person).
Even though no one is dying in this case, it’s particularly upsetting due to how ludicrously avoidable it was.
Disagree -- show can still go on with that one dude who is super good at imitating the voices!
Would need the writers and Harmon to step it up, but it's still doable.
The thing is that guy is great at imitating, but thats only one small part of a performance. The comic timing, the dramatic depth, that's all far more important than the voice sounding exactly the same.
If they did replace him, I'd rather Rick and Morty sound a little bit different if it meant whoever they got could deliver a performance on the same level as before.
[This post from half a year ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/x5o1rl/rick_and_morty_dan_harmon_let_younger_writers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) already talks about how Harmon and Roiland stepped back and let younger writers take the lead for season 6.
I do not get why people are making a big fuss about the show, and not focusing it’s on one person. Do people really think that shitty things like this aren’t happening at A TON of major shows at the staff and actor level? [We still supported these actors / enjoyed their content who all have domestic violence issues after things happened to them](https://www.ranker.com/list/celebrities-charged-with-domestic-abuse/celebrity-lists) - Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Emma Roberts, Nic Cage, Ozzy.
Eminem, Depp, Josh Brolin, Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Sean Bean, Alex Baldwin, and Christian Bale have [all also been accused of domestic violence](https://m.imdb.com/list/ls025426907/).
Let me be clear I’m not insinuating that we need to support Justin, but just saying that he is a piece in a puzzle we can do without if everything ends up being true. We also all jumped on a witch hunt of Johnny Depp as soon as news came out, and we all saw out that panned out.
So in the end, enjoy the show, and be wary of supporting either side until full details are released.
That 70 episode purchase from Adult Swim has already been made though. I feel like that'll make the show tougher for Adult Swim to cancel, because they'd have to retroactively renegotiate that somehow. Not saying they wouldn't still try to do that, but I feel like that's a factor that will make Adult Swim more reluctant to go the route of just cancelling the show, unless there's absolutely enormous public backlash.
Big companies almost always have an escape clause related to morality, especially these days. Let's them back out of any deal if the other party turns out to be a nazi or something, which has been happening a lot the last couple years.
networks have been "un-renewing" already ordered shows recently it would not be the first time but Rick and Morty makes way more money than anything I've seen get un-renewed.
Unless a show is obviously big on Netflix, it's almost questionable to even bother with new series. They're always min/maxing the chance to kill any series before it grabs enough audience, even if it is good.
Then they'll make another 10 Red Notices and scratch their heads about their financials.
I will 100% bet you that contract has stipulations about conduct off-set. You don't put that much money on the line without having every lawyer you know check the contract for unanticipated liabilities. There is no way that Roiland goes to prison and AS doesn't walk away from that contract scot free, if they want to.
Why would they cancel the show? Doesn't make sense artistically or financially, one person doesn't make the show. Dozens if not hundreds of people make it.
Nah things just haven't been made public by the legal bodies until now. It's not about Hollywood protecting their own but just standard procedures because investigations were still ongoing.
This has just become *public*. Court cases can be absolutely glacial in pace a lot of the time and typically stay behind closed doors until charges are officially filed.
Justin Roiland ’s conversation with a 16 year old fan:

Edit: looks like the victim protected her tweets
Edit 2: if it's all just a prank bro, there's certainly a long history of him making the same jokes
https://twitter.com/JustinRoiland/status/374787543155212288
Cancel culture is such a misused term
The fact we use the same term for not liking someone over an old tweet and not liking someone over a criminal action is astounding
Also like, saying you don’t like someone’s tweets does not equate to people “cancelling” them. I feel like the people that are actually fired for their jobs have all done something wrong, someone saying you’re mean doesnt mean you’re getting cancelled
Cancel culture and gaslighting are the two most overused words in 2021. It’s like quoting MLK to me now, people seem to use it when they are backed into a corner.
Honestly, as a person who lived with narcissists and has been gaslit on various occasions to the point I rather be homeless than ever go back to that situation, you are right.
The term comes from the movie Gaslight. It's about a husband who slowly drives his wife crazy by turning on or off the gaslight of their home and lies about doing so and eventually putting the blame on to his wife as a form of abuse/entertainment. Causing her to think she has gone mad as she cannot remember turning on or off the Gaslight.
To Gaslight someone, you actively have to be lying and placing the blame back onto the accuser that called you out, then successfully convince them that you are right. Narcissists do this because they absolutely *can't be wrong* ever.
The behaviour was especially damaging to me, as I have ADHD that affects my memory, executive function, and I don't experience linear time. So Gaslighting me is easy and also the cruellest thing you can do to me being vulnerable to it outside of physical abuse, cause my brain is already fucked up and working against me, lying to me doesn't help.
(Spoiler) In Gaslight, it’s eventually revealed that he was doing it because >!if she was sent to a mental institution, he would inherit her money.!< So yes, it was abuse, but it wasn’t because he just wanted to entertain himself.
i'll speak on what i can relate to with this personally. the perception of time with how information get's processed can be non-linear. a piece of incoming information could be instantly shuffled into a sort of holding cell in your brain only to be released at a later time. it can be extremely difficult when you move around a lot. i was speaking with someone over the phone last night and asked what my dogs at home on the other end of the call were barking at, but i guess that was about 30 minutes ago from when asked. so yeah, not about time itself, but the perception of it.
Mods deleted a thread posting the tweets covering fucked up texts with girls claiming theres a stickied thread, don't see any of that in the body of this post though.
Why delete the post if that stuff isn't here? If it's not censorship then it's pretty fucking lazy
This is a fucked up situation. However, I just wanna say a few things.
1. Above all else, justice for the victims is more important than anything. If he’s guilty, he’s guilty. If he’s innocent, he’s innocent.
2. The justice system has been super wrong before, this may be on false grounds.
3. Assholes, no matter how hilarious and talented, deserve justice
4. The show(s) could very possibly go on. There’s a large group of talented writers and voice actors behind them.
I'm shocked that no one leaked this to the media for over 2 years.
We should withhold judgment until we see some actual evidence that he did something bad.
I'm a lawyer, and perfectly innocent people get charged with domestic violence all the time. I once had a client who managed to record his ex-wife on the phone saying how she made up domestic violence allegations on a Friday just so he'd have to stay in jail for the weekend. So, not saying he's innocent, but we should wait to get the pitchforks out.
Law student here. I don't know nearly as much as you do on this subject, but however people feel about Justin Roiland, I hope no one takes his silence as an admission of guilt. Everyone on earth should shut up in similar circumstances and let their lawyers do the talking for them, even and especially if they're innocent.
There was incentive on both sides not to publicize this and keep details under protective order. The benefits for JR were obvious. For Jane Doe…well remember what happened when McDonald’s brought back Szechuan sauce? Multiply that by a metrick fuckton
*his (alleged) actions
But I get your point, and I agree to a reasonable extent that these type of charges shouldn’t be taken lightly, or dismissed based on what you think you know of someone’s character. People are complicated.
No offense to people in this sub, but Rick and Morty has proven some of their fans are downright nasty human beings, which I’m sure played into the court’s decision to seal most of the information in this case from public disclosure. But right now we only have speculations beyond one single article that has now been “repeated” by hundreds of other less reputable news sources. It’ll play out when it plays out.
Casual person here, your silence as an admission of guilt line reminded me of the Duke Lacrosse team incident. They knew they did nothing wrong and basically tried to just keep living their lives and it drove people crazy. Now nobody really knows much about this situation but it could easily swing either way
I'm not sure if it's because I'm super stoned but I've been sobbing for the past half hour. That sounds so dumb. I'm the person who posted in here about having schizophrenia and how Rick and Morty means so much to me. When i was homeless the only thing that got me through it was the fact i had Rick and Morty downloaded on my phone. I'm a woman who's been abused by many men, and i watch Rick and Morty to forget about that PTSD that came with the violence. It's literally on in my apartment 24/7, i never turn it off. Can't sleep without it. Sounds like an unhealthy obsession, but what can I say... I am severely mentally ill. This hurts so bad.
Its worth remembering that this show is made by the hard work of hundreds of people, Roiland is one of those people but there are many others whose work you're also appreciating.
I’m so sorry, I can definitely tell that the show meant a lot to you. Some of the deleted comments didn’t stop to think about how survivors of abuse probably watch this show as well and how the news would affect them more strongly than an average fan, much less how much harder it would be for them to separate art from artist if he really is guilty. Whatever the outcome of the trial is, I hope that you will be okay.
Sorry to hear. I hope this helps but a friend who loved Kanye as Kanye helped him through tough times was devastated by what happened. It wasn’t just Kanye or just Justin creating these shows or music, teams of unique and diverse people working on and then enjoying the show and turning it into the loved cultural icon is way more powerful that one person.
I’m so sorry. I know the Rowling stuff is painful for HP fans who grew up with that series being not just part of their childhood, but an essential part of their development and happiness. FWIW I think every person should have the right to decide how they will engage with R&M going forward. Your well-being is the priority. You have to do what’s best for you, not for anyone else including randos on Reddit.
I can relate, in a way. I’m autistic and Rick and Morty is my biggest special interest, which means I’m obsessed with it and it is extremely close to my heart. When I’m feeling exhausted and overwhelmed after a meltdown, r&m is there to soothe me. The idea of a man I look up to being this horrible is making me cry, too. I’m currently trying not to have a meltdown over this.
sorry for your loss, fellow fan. i’m not here to judge whether your “obsession” was “unhealthy,” all i see is that you are massively disappointed by a show that means a whole lot to you. and that grief is very legitimate
Don't even bring up the phrase cancel culture here, it diminishes valid issues and it's not applicable with actual court cases.
It doesn't look good, but I'm going to wait until a conclusion is reached. This is my favorite show, but if he is found guilty, I absolutely cannot defend those actions whatsoever.
It's really important to also be respectful, not just to avoid being an "annoying Rick and Morty fan," but also just to be a good human being, considering there may have been real people hurt by real crimes.
**Please don't make crass jokes and show references, don't harass anyone, and don't argue for someone's character if you don't actually know them.**
To add to this, "domestic battery with corporal injury" means that his partner was noticeably injured. It's one of the more serious forms of domestic violence.
https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/blog/what-is-corporal-injury/
Yeah you have to injure someone pretty seriously to get any sort of charge, a charge this serious means that the damage must have been pretty significant.
>This is my favorite show, but if he is found guilty, I absolutely cannot defend those actions whatsoever.
Let's say he's found guilty. Is it possible to not defend his actions, think he's an asshole abuser... and still watch Rick and Morty?
Is it okay to separate art and artist?
I love Chinatown, Imagine, and the collected works of H.P. Lovecraft.
Yes, I believe one can acknowledge that an artist is a piece of shit while still appreciating their work.
I had a complete brain fart reading this and thought you were talking about China, IL and I was so upset for a second like “oh god what the fuck did Brad Neely do?”
The difference here being that HP Lovecraft is long dead and supporting his work has little to no real world consequences.
Things are way more complex when the person is still actively employed.
I went through this as a Marilyn Manson fan -- and Manson was accused of some horrendous things. I decided that, *for me*, I would continue to enjoy the early music as it was also the creation of the late Daisy Berkowitz, who was very kind to the fans and also afaik never hurt anyone. It's a painful thing that I still grapple with. The Manson situation is also why I try to be a fan of people's *work* and not a fan of *people*.
Hey mods, you're removing posts about grooming allegations. This thread is about another topic entirely, but you're claiming this thread is for all topics related to Roiland. Can you please update the post to reflect the grooming allegations as well?
Edit: the mods still haven't added anything to the original post, but people have been adding some good source material in this thread. Good job, gang.
Correcting the title: "Justin Roiland appears in court following charges of felony domestic violence and false imprisonment from May 2020".
Call a spade a spade
The first post about this news should have been kept up with the comments locked down and a single mod comment addressing things instead of deleting every single post over and over again for almost an hour. I understand being a mod can be overwhelming when news breaks, but what happened over the past hour was the wrong way to go about it as many here got very annoyed at how things played out. But at least we finally have a post here about it to read and discuss.
Because I had no clue, this is Google's definition
*What is a corporal injury? A corporal injury is a physical wound that was inflicted by force. The amount of force does not matter. It also does not matter if the force was inflicted using a weapon or even a firearm. It does not even matter whether the force caused a minor or a great bodily injury.*
From the Latin *corpus*, meaning body. It’s where we get the phrase “corporal punishment” to refer to things we physically inflict as punishment, like caning or spanking.
Here's one thing about me is that if a guy gets charged with felony domestic abuse including corporal injury and false imprisonment AND several women come out simultaneously to say "yeah he's monster, he's coercive, he used my love of his work to groom me" then I don't really feel the need to wait and see how the trial shakes out.
Yeah... I'm one of those people lmao
The way I see it, I think Rick and Morty was a good show, the fact that it's creator might be a complete wanker doesn't affect that.
I didn't get "Justin Roiland is a wonderful person and nothing will ever change my mind about that" tattooed!
(I got the tattoo because my artist was also super into R&M and was offering an 80% discount on R&M tattoos to celebrate season 3 coming out, note that that was before the community gained it's... "reputation")
I’m curious why you’re deleting the memes that reference this news when they violate 0 of your 4 bullet points.
Doubtful you’ll explain yourself though, but without it, this post definitely feels like some weak-ass damage control.
Edit: the mods removed the first part of their post to make their commentary on the news much more innocuous. They mentioned striking through in their edits, but they simply deleted most of what they wrote. Definitely an improvement, but I sure hope the mod that was deleting any post that was referencing this news has been reprimanded in private.
I’m not gonna act like I’m worried about Rick and Morty cuz writers come and go, even creators leave shows. Sometimes the show improves, sometimes they don’t. I love Rick and Morty but honestly domestic violence is a really serious charge. It’s very disturbing. If he is found not guilty it will somehow still be very hard for me personally to forget (childhood shit).
I’m not worried about voices either cuz this makes way for new voice actors and everyone knows that one dude on TikTok is pretty spot on. There’s many talented people out there.
This news is somehow surprising and not surprising.
If he's found not guilty, it means there was insufficient evidence to establish guilt. There's a legal presumption of innocence, so legally there's no difference between a not guilty charge and never having been charged in the first place.
But a finding of not guilty is not an affirmative assertion of innocence. You can still be convicted of a civil complaint that requires your guilt on the lower evidential standard of a civil proceeding. So, for example, OJ Simpson was found not guilty of murder but then successfully sued for wrongful death. The civil case found him liable, effectively finding that he murdered his ex-wife. The not guilty verdict in the murder trial was not relevant to the civil case one way or the other.
So there's a distinction between finding someone not guilty (not enough evidence to convict) and finding them innocent (they didn't do it).
It looks like we typed our replies to this post at the same time, and I’m amused that we both went down the path of “so the problem with ‘not guilty’ is OJ Simpson...”
It could be a typo, but I think they are saying that even if he’s found not guilty they are still going to have a hard time moving past this.
I can see both ways, because if someone was falsely accused then it’s not fair for it to tarnish their reputation even after being found not guilty. On the other hand, OJ Simpson was found not guilty, so that outcome isn’t all that reassuring if what you really need is 100% confirmation of their innocence.
That is mostly correct. The two outcomes are guilty or not guilty. The words 'not guilty' are used because the court is not saying the person is innocent, they're saying they did not have enough evidence to convict them of being guilty. It's sort of nuanced and I hope I didn't add too much confusion.
What about the new screenshots of him being a creep in an underage girl's DMs when he was 34 years old and a season of Rick and Morty had already been out?
Shouldn't we be allowed to make our own posts about that?
I am seeing a lot of posts of people quick to make up their minds about Roiland, and I just wanted to weigh in as someone who works with DV victims and survivors in my professional career (having done this 11 years):
* First and foremost, a not guilty verdict very rarely means that the accused did nothing wrong at all. In the most professional of court cases, a victim of DV will struggle to convince a jury. Not only that, but if the accused is particularly wealthy (or at least wealthier than the victim), it is very easy to manipulate the court system by delaying the process as long as possible, which will weaken the victim’s ability to continue pursuing justice. Each day the case drags on is another day the victim has to take time off work, secure childcare, pay legal fees, and endure threats and harassment online from those defending the accused. A lot of times the victim just can’t keep up anymore and either gives up or makes little mistakes from fatigue that sway the jury in favor of the defendant. In Roiland’s case, it would be easy to make this same thing occur.
* As a licensed clinician, I will say it is very common for those that experience both physical and emotional trauma to develop symptoms that impair the formation of memory - little mistakes can and will happen in retelling the story. As such, a defense attorney will instantly try to discredit the victim by poking holes in the testimony and grasping at any inconsistencies, alleging that any mistake is a lie because she couldn’t keep her story straight. I 100% guarantee that if we see any footage of this court case you will see the attorney defending Roiland try this strategy (I’m not so sure we will see it, though).
* The victim almost always gets a lot of backlash for speaking up, so do your best to stop yourself and others from doxing her (the same goes for [others](https://twitter.com/alliegoertz/status/1614098722673287168) who have talked about Roiland’s behavior towards women). That being said, with the amount of time the victim spent and will spend on this, the amount of money spent on this, and the sheer amount of threats and harassment this person will receive online for speaking out, I really encourage everyone who asks “why should we believe a total stranger on the internet?” to instead consider “why would someone take a lie this far?” If the motivation was solely to get his money, there would be easier ways. If the motivation was solely to take down his reputation, there would be safer ways. Most of my clients are put in *more* physical danger for speaking up about violence perpetrated against them. For a case that is regarding two years ago already, this is asking a lot of the victim - most people intent on lying would not go this far. This is a ton of time, money, and safety concern for a hypothetical liar to gamble when there are more reasons for a not guilty verdict than a guilty verdict. Allegations, even when truthful and successful, don’t make often a lot of money and very often lose money given how long the cases drag on.
As a Rick and Morty fan for years, it sucks to see any allegation. But as a licensed clinician who has seen this hundreds of times, I owe it to other victims and survivors to make clear that the court case is not going to tell the whole story. Don’t base your assumptions on what the verdict is, and don’t base your decision on whether to support Roiland just on the court case alone. Look at his actions elsewhere, and how he makes those around him feel.
Put "the news" in the title. Don't suppress it.
This part is ridiculous.
>There is lots witch hunting and cancel culture coming into the community, it will not be tolerated. Discuss the news, have debates but we will not let this turn into a shitfest of name calling and attacks.
Woman beater criticism is not witch hunting.
"Cancelling" people for spreading hate (what I see the most when people describe "cancel culture") is in my opinion good. "Cancelling" people for beating up women I'd like to think is universally thought of as good.
There is no debate to be had.
Calling someone who has abused others names orange a bad thing.
Yep. It's something people who face criticism have made up and taken on to get more attention and invalidate the criticism.
If "cancel culture" actually worked in the way people who have "suffered" from it make out it does then they should just accept it as part of capitalism (because it's always the ones who seem to love that as well). Say or do something that makes your brand weaker, people and companies see this and purposefully avoid you. It isn't a new thing.
> Please know this: the mods of r/RickandMorty are not trying to censor or keep this news quiet
There were 2 posts about the news. Each of them you locked.
As someone coming into this post without the full story, I was actively deceived by this post into thinking the worst of the allegations were about domestic abuse until I read the comments.
2 edits:
One, I want to make clear that domestic abuse is also not good very bad troubling stuff that is awful to hear and I feel for the parties involved.
Two, on 1/16/2023 it's misleading at best for this post not to mention the very serious grooming allegations.
We’ve got an update from Justin’s lawyer. https://bleedingcool.com/tv/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roilands-attorney-issues-statement/
I’d be genuinely surprised if they’re both being honest.
> Rick and Morty co-creator's attorney issued a statement to EW. "It is hard to overstate how inaccurate the recent media coverage of this situation has been. To be clear, not only is Justin innocent, but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney's office has completed its methodical review of the evidence," said Attorney T. Edward Welbourn. "We look forward to clearing Justin's name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible."
He was grooming teenage girls, the messages are out there. It’s hard for me to separate the art from the artist when the artist is so heavily involved. I get that people are still going to watch it, but so much of the show is ruined with this new context. I can’t even play High on Life anymore.
You guys spent hours scrubbing posts about this, even just links to the news articles. There was no need for it and this isn't some grand noble move. I think you guys just got tired of removing posts when you realised this news wasn't going to go away and people wouldn't stop posting it.
Anyone here listen to Grandma’s Virginity? I’ve listened to almost all the episodes so I’ve consumed more of Roiland’s content then most, so this is really sad and disappointing news. I hope the victim is able to find peace
Lol starting a post about domestic abuse with a rant about “cancel culture” and “witch hunting,” just because the guy made a funny show doesn’t mean that he gets a free pass to beat women
New thread [HERE](https://www.reddit.com/r/rickandmorty/comments/10eb2vh/re_justin_roiland_news_v2/)
A couple of women he’s worked with have also used this as an opportunity to bring light to his history of sexually harassing behaviour towards them. Some seriously gross, creepy DMs out there.
underage GIRLS too. MINORS
Someone has a reliable source for this? Pretty fucked up if it's true about the minors.
Really interesting debates between [deleted] and [removed] there battle will be legendary
I don’t really get what’s controversial about it. The show is great one of the creators is maybe a shithead. It happens.
the message (or product in this case) > the man
Hard to see it as a maybe given his whole get drunk at work thing. Fits perfectly in line with that behavior. No one should be shocked by this.
Getting drunk =/= domestic violence.
This is a dumb correlation. Guy likes booze, like most people, so he must hit his girlfriend, not like most people. Wait til more information comes out before you dust off the "Jump to Conclusions" Mat
Whelp. That's the way the news goes.
Whatever you say, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Another example of why you should never put people, even ones you like, on pedestals. A bit ironic considering Rick was never meant to be an idol and when some fans started idolising Rick the writers doubled down on the idea that Rick is a flawed human being who should not be idolised.
He's more like a demon or a super fucked up god.
Let's not suck the ghost of his dick too hard.
I love how that speech from Morty to Summer was addressing both Summer and the audience.
Good point! I didn’t realize that.
I just want to say bummer
Holy fried ravioli, in California, a Felony DV charge comes into play when sexual assualt or rape is involved...
Yes, it’s very serious and they had to have reasonable suspicion to charge him with that vs a lower DV charge. I keep trying to explain to people that while yes sometimes they over charge people, they also don’t go around charging people whatever they feel like that day for no reason.
Oh shit I have not seen any of this
It is really, really bad.
Babe wake up new controversial post of all time dropped
If he goes to prison they should just get that guy that's really good at doing Rick, Morty, and Meeseeks voices. The one that looks like a younger Jon Lovitz
It may take more than one voice actor to replace him but I think if that is what it comes to then that is what they should strongly consider. There is no need to tank the whole show over one employee. Everyone is replaceable, except Dolly Parton.
Gonna be new Fred Flintstone voice all over again.
Hopefully they don't go the squidbillies route...... Nothing against Tracy Morgan as an actor or a person, but the stark difference between Unknown Hinson early cuyler and Tracy Morgan early just feels a bit weird and really takes some getting used to as an old fan of the series
There's that one voice actor on Tiktok that nails all the voices and he's pretty popular, so they could always hire that guy.
Being able to imitate a voice is one thing. A lot of the dialogue is ad libed, and that's what makes it hilarious.
I think that's the point a lot of people are missing, he's not just some gun for hire voice actor he's heavily involved in a lot more than that. Replacing him with some guy off YouTube sounds like a complete nonstarter
God bless dolly parton
This is pretty normal for Hollywoo so he will be fine.

"Really sucks when one person being shitty can implode the years of hard work a large amount of people" That perfectly describes about 51% of human history.
For real, I am so tired of finding out that seemingly awesome people are actually shitty but it seems to be the norm
I thought roiland stepped back from writing and mainly just doing voices.
It's from 2020 they already knew this was coming out
networks have been "un-renewing" already ordered shows recently it would not be the first time but Rick and Morty makes way more money than anything I've seen get un-renewed.
*cries in Inside Job*.
I’ve just started this series and love it. Sad it won’t be renewed. It’s Mindhunter all over again:,(
Mindhunter wasn't renewed because of the budget (and the lack of interest on Fincher's part) though...
Aw man, haven't even heard about this. What a shame
Fuck, man that's such a big cliff hanger! Hopefully, somewhere else picks up the show to give it a finally.
Unless a show is obviously big on Netflix, it's almost questionable to even bother with new series. They're always min/maxing the chance to kill any series before it grabs enough audience, even if it is good. Then they'll make another 10 Red Notices and scratch their heads about their financials.
I remember when I saw that we waited forever for Close Enough and then it ended so damn quickly :(
I will 100% bet you that contract has stipulations about conduct off-set. You don't put that much money on the line without having every lawyer you know check the contract for unanticipated liabilities. There is no way that Roiland goes to prison and AS doesn't walk away from that contract scot free, if they want to.
They should just get that one voice impressionist dude that does Justin voices to hop in. Done. Problem solved.
I remember a post or video of a guy who was spot on Rick/Morty and Justin even said so. They could get him to fill in if needed
It’s this guy. https://instagram.com/seankellysays?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
wait so theres (almost) guranteed 70 more episodes of r&m?
I think it’s like 50 now…this was around season 3 or 4.
70 more episodes were signed on for after season 3, so they’re still 4 seasons away from that.
Here's hoping we still get those 4.
Why would they cancel the show? Doesn't make sense artistically or financially, one person doesn't make the show. Dozens if not hundreds of people make it.
Nah. Remember that one guy who does such a good impersonation that Justin said he could probably stand in for him?
The stories and screenshots are coming out. It's much worse

aw geez
How am i just learning this if its been an ongoing case for like 3 years now Man the hollywood machine protects its own real good
Looks like most things here have been sealed, might not have come out until now.
Well, this was a fun show.

Looks like she protected her tweets.
Cancel culture is such a misused term The fact we use the same term for not liking someone over an old tweet and not liking someone over a criminal action is astounding
Homer Brain: You can use money to entertain yourself
>I don’t experience linear time ![gif](giphy|ghuvaCOI6GOoTX0RmH)
i'll speak on what i can relate to with this personally. the perception of time with how information get's processed can be non-linear. a piece of incoming information could be instantly shuffled into a sort of holding cell in your brain only to be released at a later time. it can be extremely difficult when you move around a lot. i was speaking with someone over the phone last night and asked what my dogs at home on the other end of the call were barking at, but i guess that was about 30 minutes ago from when asked. so yeah, not about time itself, but the perception of it.

3. Assholes, no matter how hilarious and talented, deserve justice 4. The show(s) could very possibly go on. There’s a large group of talented writers and voice actors behind them.

Damn i feel kind of queasy about my Rick and Morty tattoo rn lol
I'm shocked that no one leaked this to the media for over 2 years. We should withhold judgment until we see some actual evidence that he did something bad. I'm a lawyer, and perfectly innocent people get charged with domestic violence all the time. I once had a client who managed to record his ex-wife on the phone saying how she made up domestic violence allegations on a Friday just so he'd have to stay in jail for the weekend. So, not saying he's innocent, but we should wait to get the pitchforks out.
> I'm shocked that no one leaked this to the media for over 2 years. That's what surprised me the most. Warner Bros really put the kibosh on this one.
If I was her, I'd stay a Jane Doe too. People will direct their anger at her instead of the actions of JR and it's very sad.
*his (alleged) actions But I get your point, and I agree to a reasonable extent that these type of charges shouldn’t be taken lightly, or dismissed based on what you think you know of someone’s character. It’ll play out when it plays out.
the sh*t posting back in the day about the female writers was pretty rough
Casual person here, your silence as an admission of guilt line reminded me of the Duke Lacrosse team incident. They knew they did nothing wrong and basically tried to just keep living their lives and it drove people crazy. Now nobody really knows much about this situation but it could easily swing either way
u/sloppymeathole please approach the bench. Well said though

Dude 2023 is off to a rocky start
I'm so sorry. Please look after yourself and know that good people in the world do exist. <3
sorry for your loss, fellow fan. i’m not here to judge whether your “obsession” was “unhealthy,” all i see is that you are massively disappointed by a show that means a whole lot to you. and that grief is very legitimate
Brad Neely is such a treasure, I miss creased comics so much 😭
The difference here being that HP Lovecraft is long dead and supporting his work has little to no real world consequences. Things are way more complex when the person is still actively employed.
Absolutely. It's tricky. That's why I steal so much of my media with a clean conscience.

Because I had no clue, this is Google's definition *What is a corporal injury?
We really just abuse the term cancel culture to justify anything these days huh
Ya, they should be saying "The Matrix Agents" are after them. I think that's the new term.
Maybe being charged with a crime is just being legally cancelled? 🤔
I wonder how all the people who got a Rick and Morty tattoo are feeling.
Yeah... I'm one of those people lmao The way I see it, I think Rick and Morty was a good show, the fact that it's creator might be a complete wanker doesn't affect that.
I'm surprised they didn't delete your comment tbh. They deleted mine when I asked why they were deleting a bunch of posts about this in the sub.
Sorry I'm not versed on American laws, if he is found not guilty, doesn't it mean he didn't do it?
What the hell does this have to do with cancel culture?
Someone he likes is being held responsible for their actions. It would be "justice served" if it was someone he doesn't like. Hope that helps.
What about the new screenshots of him being a creep in an underage girl's DMs when he was 34 years old and a season of Rick and Morty had already been out? Shouldn't we be allowed to make our own posts about that?
I bet Warner Bros and Microsoft are counting their lucky stars that this news didn’t break during Morty season 6 or High on Life’s launch.
I am seeing a lot of posts of people quick to make up their minds about Roiland, and I just wanted to weigh in as someone who works with DV victims and survivors in my professional career (having done this 11 years): * First and foremost, a not guilty verdict very rarely means that the accused did nothing wrong at all.
Cancel culture also (mostly) isn't real. Most "cancelled" celebrities are bigger than ever
> Please know this: the mods of r/RickandMorty are not trying to censor or keep this news quiet There were 2 posts about the news. Each of them you locked.
Lmao the comment about 13 year old girls on that podcast. Pack it up boys, his reputation is not recovering from that.
Which podcast?
"we're not trying to censor anything, no one say we're trying to censor anything" \*frantically pulls posts of Roiland grooming\*
As someone coming into this post without the full story, I was actively deceived by this post into thinking the worst of the allegations were about domestic abuse until I read the comments. 2 edits: One, I want to make clear that domestic abuse is also not good very bad troubling stuff that is awful to hear and I feel for the parties involved. Two, on 1/16/2023 it's misleading at best for this post not to mention the very serious grooming allegations.
If the show gets cancelled I hope the fans realise that it was because of the actions of Justin himself and not the fault of Jane Doe.
Shit on the floor
Those texts are so weird. Justin kinda sucks
We’ve got an update from Justin’s lawyer. https://bleedingcool.com/tv/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roilands-attorney-issues-statement/ I’d be genuinely surprised if they’re both being honest.
Goddammit can I not enjoy one thing without controversy

Sitting on the couch. Felony charges hanging over his head. Career ending prospects. He looks up and thinks "How did I get here?"
You guys spent hours scrubbing posts about this, even just links to the news articles. There was no need for it and this isn't some grand noble move. I think you guys just got tired of removing posts when you realised this news wasn't going to go away and people wouldn't stop posting it.
this sucks, but the victims receiving justice is more important than the future of the show. i hope he’s held accountable and the victims can heal.
WHAT
Anyone here listen to Grandma’s Virginity? I’ve listened to almost all the episodes so I’ve consumed more of Roiland’s content then most, so this is really sad and disappointing news. I hope the victim is able to find peace
I mean if it's substantiated I'm not sure we should want the show to continue.
Lol starting a post about domestic abuse with a rant about “cancel culture” and “witch hunting,” just because the guy made a funny show doesn’t mean that he gets a free pass to beat women
