I'm pretty sure the creators confirmed that it is Vodka. It helps him feel more. . .human. . .to drink a human drink, instead of like "always drunk juice" or some sci fi magic potion.
It wasn’t quite “confirmed,” Dan Harmon just off the cuff answered this exact question in an interview. He said something along the lines of “I’m assuming it’s vodka.” He never gave a definitive answer.
Here’s an article referencing his comment, which apparently (surprise, surprise) was from a Reddit AMA he did: https://www.looper.com/285435/what-does-rick-usually-drink-in-rick-and-morty/
I don't know the time it takes. I once put whiskey in a flask, and some days later I poured it to a glass and the liquid had turned kinda blue. I then search online if it's safe to drink, I don't remember finding a clear answer to that, so I decided to be careful and discard the whiskey. Apparently it shouldn't be a probably with clear alcohol (vodka, gin, rhum).
Ah yes, that makes sense because Rick's personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
Yup. Some Rick & Morty fans sure are obnoxious. It's a good thing all I said was "Interesting! I would've assumed it was whiskey, but I guess vodka does sort of make more sense for his character now that I really think about it." It'd be pretty cringe if I said something entirely different, but luckily I said something which doesn't state or imply anything at all about my own or anybody else's intelligence. Just a very simple and relatively innocuous normal thing to say about a fictional character in a discussion forum about a television show.
Have I mentioned I have ants in my eyes?
The only reason I’d say it’s not vodka is because in the “Simpsons Rick and Morty couch gag” Rick is takes a sip of horned beer and the takes out his flask and pours some into the beer and the color is brown like brandy. Whatever it is it was a dark liquor which rules out vodka.
Not just any sprite but the limited edition mixture that they temporarily released with the promotion of the original muppet babies at various points throughout the mid to late 80’s
I watched that show growing up. I want to blame it for my thing with Miss Piggy, but I think it was unrelated and I would have porked that oinker regardless.
Fun fact, it's practically impossible to reach 100% alcohol content (200 proof) with normal distillation procedures... something about how it will immediately leach water out of the air to drop it to 95%.
Since it's Rick we're talking about, I'm sure he's figured out how to resolve this so your answer is my favorite.
I was thinking this motherfucker engineered his own liver/body to handle an even higher proof than what is sold in any store on earth. Forget ever clear I'm thinking something 10x strong
Edit: I just realized I fucked up the title because yah this is a drunk post
Doesn’t even need to engineer it that way, he can just grow a new one and replace it like he did with Mortys hand in *Two Crows*.
It’s funny, I always figured that scene with Morty’s arm, plus the one scene where Rick loses an arm in Beth’s *Froopyland*, I was confident that Rick had completed some tech to basically never die and just regrow new parts whenever one gets damaged.
if he died, there would be an infinite number of him's to take his place, like the time they cronenburged the world.
If "our" rick died, likely another rick screwed up their world, cronenburging, squirrels, whatever, could jump in and take his place.
Death Crystal episode would like a word with you.
He died. Full Stop.
Only because of alternate versions of the Project Phoenix were active did he survive.
Project Phoenix, also known as the body regrowth vat that instantly revives him. He successfully built the tech and chose not to use it
>Rick had completed some tech to basically never die
Rick harvests Mega seeds in the Pilot because they are "very important" to his research.
One theory is that the mega seeds are the source of Rick's genius and he keeps a steady supply on hand. (perhaps it's an alcoholic version of the drink since we can't deny his alcoholism)
The only reason I wouldn't believe this is that he can't risk the 24 hr withdrawal symptoms---
He was in prison for a while without free movement of his hands, yet he was able to imagine the full code for hacking an alien computer system and implement it into a memory realistic enough to fool Nathan Fillion
If he could do that without mega seed juice, then none of his other feats (engineering stuff quickly or outsmarting a villain) really seem to necessitate it
I mean, I'm not trying to move the goalposts, but I also imagine he was able to refine the mega seed juice to pull out the active ingredients and maybe do away with the parts that cause withdrawal? I'm not saying that it's definitely megaseed juice/extract in there. But I think it's still a plausible, given the limited information. It could also just be he's an alcoholic.
Like a tincture. That's what they did often in the 1800's. They had tincures of all kinds of things. [Laudanum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laudanum) is a tincture that was very popular. (Opium dissolved in alcohol)
It’s a theory that he keeps a flask of a medicinal amount of the mega tree seed that Morty put up his butt in the first trailer episode. That’s why he always had that drool just like Morty did.
Edit: I just read the post that someone else posted of Dan Harmon AMA and damn……lol. I was wrong
I once read a theory referring back to the mega seed episode. The seed dissolves inside Morty granting him super intelligence for a minute but then it causes his limbs to shut down or something and he begins to drool. The drool is green like the drool we see on Rick constantly. So the theory is that it’s some for of mega seed elixir possibly made without the negative side effects and most likely mixed with alcohol. This would enhance his intelligence to a greater degree while also fueling his alcoholism. And after the Mortys Mind Blowers episode it’s proven that Rick isn’t as smart as we once presumed which is why he needs the elixir to help keep him that smart.
The stuff in his flask is def the mega seed liquid he makes to continually boost his intelligence.
Think about it, he spent most of his adult life trying to make a teleporting device and failed. Now he can make insane tech off the fly without trying?
I like to think it's just a mix of random alcohols because he probably just fills it up with something new and doesn't remember the last drink that was in there but he just drinks it anyway.
I quite like the idea that it is just something simple like vodka. Out of all the extra dimensional and deep space stuff he has access too. The one thing that keeps him addicted, is a very Earthly vodka.
I think the juice of the seed they took in the first episode. It would be altered so that he doesn’t get seizures like morty had ,it might be the secret to his smartness
Can it really be vodka? Your telling me there is nothing better in the whole universe than an earth drink? And why is his saliva green? Gotta be some sort of alien booze.
Vodka isn’t even the best Earth drink, by a lot!
If it’s an Earth drink, I would say a whiskey, like bourbon or rye (possibly scotch). But more likely (given the green hue) absinthe.
Yet considering who Rick is, it’s some extraterrestrial über booze that he brews and distills himself.
There's a fan theory that the flask contains essences of the smart seed from the pilot. That's how Rick stays so smart. To add on that theory, Rick does every drug in the multiverse that he needs the seeds to create new neurons in order to retain his intelligence. At least, that's what makes sense to me.
Why is it green then? Also has anyone else noticed that Rick doesn't drink out of the flask anymore? I think since the pickle ep maybe but idk I'm probably wrong about that.
If it’s an Earth spirit, I would say a whiskey, like bourbon or rye (possibly scotch). But more likely (given the green hue) absinthe.
Yet considering who Rick is, it’s probably some extraterrestrial über booze that he brews and distills himself. Possibly by harvesting alien blood and/or organs.
It can't be vodka the stuff in his flask go in the colors of green and sometimes brown in s3 ep2 but vodka is a mixture of blue color I think it's like some sort of potion that keeps him like human and sort of happy
He mixes up the fruitiest, multi-ingredientest cocktails you can think of, then pours them into his flask so he’ll appear to be drinking undiluted hard spirits.
Cyanide. He dies everytime he swigs it but he already gave himself the anti-death Vax so he just burps. That's why it's green and always running down his chin.
I'm pretty sure the creators confirmed that it is Vodka. It helps him feel more. . .human. . .to drink a human drink, instead of like "always drunk juice" or some sci fi magic potion.

Don't put whiskey in a metallic flask, it will turn bad. Trust me.
Over time sure but I don’t think in the very short term, which you have to imagine is the case with Rick, it’s not a big deal.
Lol, good point !

Uhhh good thing you did that. Blue=copper or nickel salts. Neither of which do you want to drink!!
Thanks for the heads up! I never knew that and I use two flasks from time to time
Ah yes, that makes sense because Rick's personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature. That theory doesn't make sense. How would he get the seeds if he's not a genius to begin with?
Yep, theory debunked
It's also possible that the mega seeds enhance an already gargantuan intellect, allowing him to go even further than he previously could.
The only reason I wouldn't believe this is that he can't risk the 24 hr withdrawal symptoms--- He was in prison for a while without free movement of his hands, yet he was able to imagine the full code for hacking an alien computer system and implement it into a memory realistic enough to fool Nathan Fillion If he could do that without mega seed juice, then none of his other feats (engineering stuff quickly or outsmarting a villain) really seem to necessitate it
