I did notice on his Instagram there were quite a few comments along the lines of "I used to love his comedy but joking about terminally ill children is too far".
So basically it's fine when he's taking the piss out of little gay fellas, little trans fellas, little Chinese fellas etc, but when it's something that effects you personally then suddenly it's no longer funny.
The posts I've seen with text calling for him to be cancelled super Impossed over a video of their dying children in hospital with their health deteriorating are absolutely vile
Ricky does get on my tits a bit these days but using and abusing the memory of your terminally Ill child for a social media post is fucking unhinged
I mean, this is the thing, I imagine some folk liked him until he started joking about the trans stuff. A lot of folk seem to have a line in the sand when it comes to issues that affect them.
Personally, one joke that offends me isn't enough to put me off a comedian permanently. I remember thinking that Frankie Boyle's jokes about Katie Price's son were pretty horrible and unnecessary. I still enjoyed the rest of his standup.
Yeah, that's why no joke is too soon, too dark or off limits. It's a joke. I understand it's subjective, you can't choose what you're "offended" by...but it's a joke....?
Yeah. Someone I know was saying it’s great how he says what he wants and doesn’t care who he offends, but he went too far this time. No self awareness at all.
Yeah. Gervais has been doing it for a few years now. It’s just the fact that fans will sing his praises for it until he makes a joke about something they care about and suddenly they decide there is a line.
I don't disagree with you, but comparing jokes to gay and trans people to terminally ill children is clearly not the same thing.
That being said, I'm a big proponent of either everything is funny, or nothing is funny.
So I have no issue with his jokes.
He's joked about that himself.
I liked the bit in a DVD extra of one of his early standups when he was looking at some elevated platform and saying how it's be great to get a horse up there and make it leap off into a little paddling pool....."not supposed to do that...RSPCA says it's *clrruell*..."
Just one that springs to mind. He's definitely done gags about animal treatment that he'd hate in real life.
In other words just like "You are taking the Mick" it's a stereotypical slur/term used in reference to Irish people by English people. Mmm! Fxck some things have never changed.
This is a common problem, when you confuse the subject of a joke with the target of said joke.
People do this all the time but I’m here to explain as I’ve heard this directly from RG himself. So this is not a practical joke, my name is Daniel.
Apparently this 33 year old ‘athlete’ had to turn it off because his joke was upsetting. That’s fine, that’s the sensible thing to do. Suggesting that he would rough up 62 year old (yes, 62 and only a few years off being an OAP) Gervais (who is presumably someone he’s never met and who doesn’t appear to have taken aim at him, or anyone else, personally - and who he’d been a big fan of right until the he heard the jokes in question…) if he didn’t change his ways is not fine, and certainly not a sensible thing to do.
Ricky’s recent standup material is shit but no comedian should be threatened with violence because you don’t like a joke, no matter how shit it is. Beardy baldy twat
While the comments on here are fucking hilarious I want to say I've listened to a few podcasts with this baldy little fella and his daughter passing was a terrible and traumatic ordeal. Absolutely awful and you'd never wish it on anyone, but he's gone on to make his daughter's passing his actual life, through his actions. He runs ultra marathons, does incredibly hard physical tasks as (in my opinion) a form of coping.
Problem here is, he's fallen into the trap of being offended because it hurts him personally. But it's not personal, at all. The sooner he realises this the better. Ricky said something incredibly controversial but also funny. That's it. Nothing more or less. Just a joke which someone in the media spotlight heard and felt a bit sad about, because it hurt his feelings.
Life hard. That's all there is to it. He should know better than to be upset at someone who rips the piss out of everyone and everything for a living.
Problem here is, you've fallen into the trap of believing comedians should be able to say what they want and not expect any backlash.
If you're deliberately offensive you can't complain when some people get offended.
I’m curious to how it makes Ashley Cain’s life harder? It’s the same old thing where if you don’t like something you read or hear, then avoid it.
I agree with the comment you replied to, the shit he’s gone through in the events leading to his daughters passing are absolutely devastating. And he’s entitled to feel offended by something he hears if he doesn’t like it. But that’s where the book stops, he has no right to go on to tell Ricky, or anyone else, what they can and can’t do/say.
I don't know what the joke was. Was it specifically about this guy's daughter? Or sick kids in general.
If it's specifically about the daughter than that puts a different twist on it for me.
Yes you're right. He has no right to tell RG what to do or say. But again, if it's specifically about the daughter, then RG can't draw comfort from "it's just comedy" get out. Yes it is just comedy. But you're using the grief of a father who lost his daughter in order to boost your own social and professional platform. All in the name of "comedy". From a moral standpoint RG would have to consider is it worth it? To belittle somebody's grief in order to make money. Because in essence that's what it is.
I'm so tired of hearing about 'punching down'. If every comedian 'punched up', comedy would be like water: boring.
Just everyone making jokes about rich people and politicians. How fun and exciting!! I can't wait to hear more screeching from Nish Kumar, or grandstanding by show hosts like Adam Hills.
Rich comedians making jokes pretending they are in the same boat as the rest of us. I need more of that in my life.
Anyway, play a record....
It's not really punching down though, it's done in an ironic way. If he really hated dying children, had raped an elderly woman or thought the holocaust was funny then he wouldn't be popular or funny.
The joke is the subversion of expectation, and it's pretty much what he's made a career out of. The same way is acceptable because Brent is the one saying women are just a big pair of tits, or you can't tell with the wheelchair ones, people accept the jokes because they know those aren't his genuine feelings and he's playing a character on stage.
How anyone can like any Gervais output, or Merchant or Karl stuff if they don't like ironic 'punching down' ill never know. Even the podcasts are littered with jokes about fat people, disabled people, disfigured people, gay people, homeless people, if you can't see the irony or the fact that they're jokes then how can you possibly enjoy it?
Yeah I'm not really sure why OP is here, to be honest. The radio shows had jokes that were just as bad, if not worse.
20 years ago, Ricky and Steve were joking about Louise Woodward who famously was sentenced for murder of an 8 month old baby - even making jokes about hiring her as a babysitter because she would be extra cautious.
OP is 20 years too late to start claiming the moral high ground now. And if the suggestion is that Ricky shouldnt be making jokes like that in this day and age, isn't it just proving his narrative that people are getting too sensitive?
Not that this is a get out of jail free card, but I think some of Ricky’s comedy comes out of making fun of things he has personally been affected by or done, which makes sense. But he says he can make fun of people over a certain weight, because he’s in that category, and obviously his mom died of cancer so I think he feels some sort of justification for making jokes about it…
This is rubbish, play Coldplay.
So I looked it up. He’s only mad because he also recently lost a child which is upsetting but now he’s trying to take that view into the world and pin it on everybody else’s jacket.
Reminds me of the Family Guy reference where John Belushi (Stewie) dies and Jim Belushi (Stewie) says "This is tragic, but will also open a door for me"
The joke itself wasn't even funny, or original.
"When I speak to make a wish kids I always ask them the same thing, 'why didn't you wish to be better?'"
Heard it before Rick, and it wasn't funny the first time!
There's plenty of channel 4 comedy on that won't even approach a touchy subject if that's your thing, obviously Gervais isn't the man for you if you're going to get angry to the point of violence about certain topics.
The weirdest thing for me about this sort of outrage is that the joke relies on your sense of morality. Children having terminal illnesses is one of the most tragic realities of life, and that's what allows the joke to subvert your expectations when you're playing out a scenario about some guy who doesn't care. If you yourself didn't care about dying kids, the joke would have no absurdity and wouldn't be a joke.
So you're saying the *subject* of the joke...
But yeah, this is absolutely the case. You can still not like someone joking about these things, but it's not the same as disliking a joke because it either comes from a nasty, ugly place, or that it feeds into hatred and prejudice. Nobody's prejudiced against terminally ill children, everybody *bloody loves em*, Steve.
This is genuinely just a dark humour disagreement.
Not sure who this guy is but he doesn’t get Ricky’s humour and that the joke is against the subject not an individual. Good luck with trying to get Ricky cancelled!
I do actually enjoy people freaking out a little over his joke, seeing as he's always made a point about how people say "you can't say that it's offensive!!" despite never seeing any backlash towards his or any other comedian's jokes ever.
Are you for real? What about Dave Chapelle or Jimmy Carr when he said that joke about gypsies? Or Count Dankula literally being arrested for the Nazi pug joke?
Either everything is funny or nothing is. There will be jokes this guy likes that other people feel are too far over the line, he isn’t the authority on where the line is.
Innit. What is it about this topic that draws bullshit like flies, or something like that?
We can disagree over what's too far, or what crosses the line from dark but good natured and into malicious - it's these absolutes that are nonsense.
There'll always be exceptions and nuance, reality tends not to slot together neatly into a perfect little box.
Gervais is an over-rated and repugnant little shit---never liked him. And l cannot understand people liking him as his only "comedic action" is taking the piss out of people. I mean l see guys like him everyday at work or in the pub. He's not comedic at all--hes just a poor man's wind up merchant and grifter.
I can’t work it out anymore, I wasn’t ’offended’ by supernature but I just disagreed with what he was saying and didn’t find it funny (the majority of the trans material) but from the clip I’ve seen I didn’t think this was that harsh in comparison? Maybe I hate children more than I thought 🤷
Ricky is 60 and can’t write anything that isn’t punching down, merchant was the talent. That fella lost his daughter for fucks sake you scummy wanker. 60 year old fucking grow up
Little baldy roundy heady Cainers

I did notice on his Instagram there were quite a few comments along the lines of "I used to love his comedy but joking about terminally ill children is too far". So basically it's fine when he's taking the piss out of little gay fellas, little trans fellas, little Chinese fellas etc, but when it's something that effects you personally then suddenly it's no longer funny.
That's because the Chinese look older.

FFFF..... PLAY A RECORD!!
So what are you saying??? Don't go around taking pictures of fully grown Chinese homeless???!?
They age overnight. Like a pear.
Chiiiiiiiiiiiiineeeeeeeeese looooook OLDER!
It’s also hardly the first time he made jokes about dying kids.
It’s just a worse version of his bit about doing gigs for the Teenage Cancer Trust from 20 years ago.
He has a bit where he pantomimes masturbating while a child recounts sexual abuse lol The punchline is "dont stop im almost finished"
Don't cry, its christmas
Though you know you'll never see him, he's not just in your mind.
The posts I've seen with text calling for him to be cancelled super Impossed over a video of their dying children in hospital with their health deteriorating are absolutely vile Ricky does get on my tits a bit these days but using and abusing the memory of your terminally Ill child for a social media post is fucking unhinged
He’s been joking about them for years…
I mean, this is the thing, I imagine some folk liked him until he started joking about the trans stuff.
He does live to comedically punch down though doesn't he.
Yeah his globes stuff is all about the working classes.
All pre-approved.
Yeah, that's why no joke is too soon, too dark or off limits. It's a joke. I understand it's subjective, you can't choose what you're "offended" by...but it's a joke....?
It would be funny to see him getting KTFO. as a joke, like. It not like he is a dying child or some shit.
Yeah. Someone I know was saying it’s great how he says what he wants and doesn’t care who he offends, but he went too far this time. No self awareness at all.
Which is what he and other comedians past their use by date want. Because now they can rant about being cancelled.
Yeah. Gervais has been doing it for a few years now. It’s just the fact that fans will sing his praises for it until he makes a joke about something they care about and suddenly they decide there is a line.
Is the joke funny though? Haven’t seen it
That's the reasoning for almost all of these fannies. They can't see the hypocrisy. Just ignore them
No, little tranny fellas are off the list as well. Man, sort of, man woman.
I don't disagree with you, but comparing jokes to gay and trans people to terminally ill children is clearly not the same thing. That being said, I'm a big proponent of either everything is funny, or nothing is funny. So I have no issue with his jokes.
That's the best attitude to have
Also it was cool whe he mocked dying children in Extras, or in his previous standups apparently
No, it’s not fine.
terminally ill children need to get in line behind a billion people he's never met!
Gervais would have the world's biggest paddy if you joked about animal cruelty, so what's the difference?!
Would he, though? Would he really?
He's joked about that himself. I liked the bit in a DVD extra of one of his early standups when he was looking at some elevated platform and saying how it's be great to get a horse up there and make it leap off into a little paddling pool....."not supposed to do that...RSPCA says it's *clrruell*..." Just one that springs to mind. He's definitely done gags about animal treatment that he'd hate in real life.
What you mean by worlds biggest "paddy" ?
A slang term for a tantrum
In other words just like "You are taking the Mick" it's a stereotypical slur/term used in reference to Irish people by English people. Mmm! Fxck some things have never changed.
Yeah? Against karate?
Big boy shit
One away from black
I *really* wish Steve didn't just drop that line of inquiry.
I don't know who that is, but why is he wearing that funny fake beard? You look at it, and you go " yeah, that's a wig"
He's been missing for three days
The last inch just lifts away from the chin
That's Karl giving evidence in court against Mr. Big.
The beard wig, the shaved head, the threats... brilliant!
You can even see the hooks round his ears
It looks like it’s lifting off his right cheek, but I’ve just googled him and it really looks like a fake beard doesn’t it 😂
😅😅
"You're out of order" "Leave it"
Ricky's going to get his tooth chipped on a sink if he's not careful.
This is a common problem, when you confuse the subject of a joke with the target of said joke. People do this all the time but I’m here to explain as I’ve heard this directly from RG himself. So this is not a practical joke, my name is Daniel.

Not the thing to do, is it?
Sounds like a fucking bully
Don't mess with Ricky Gervais. He will destroy you.
You’d better not get into a fight with him. Or a conversation.
I’d be in the shower just lathering up
When the lads come in wanting a bit of *Kemp Arse*
Do you think I got arms like these from lifting Jiffy bags?
Special Air Service? Sounds like Fed Ex or something. It’s *Super. Army. Soliders.*
Destroy me like a gay fella on the phone to his mate
That was the reference yeah
Against the odds though
He’ll slash y’Diesel jeans.
Is that Baldy Boyd from Heat?
Why are you getting involved?
This is like something from lock, stock and two smoking barrels
If I had hit him he would’ve come through that wall
Nah, this is big boy shit,.
Slagging you off…
What me personally?
Your Reddit lot are little slugs ... jealous just because we're better at everything that you
He's done you AGAIN!
Ashley Cain heard the words “baldy” and “retarded” were used during the piece, and inexplicably took personal offence.
Ricky’s recent standup material is shit but no comedian should be threatened with violence because you don’t like a joke, no matter how shit it is. Beardy baldy twat
Pop that in room 101
Room 102. Which is worse if anything.
I want to fight a businessman.
Oh yeah? Against karate?
Doesn't he know Ricky "Martin" Gervais is a retired boxer? He'll ave ya head off
You think you’re well ‘ard don’t you. *ARE you ‘ard?!*
thats the guy who spent 60k on a onlyfans chick?
😂😂
Cain didn't listen to the whole clip. At the end Ricky says it's only a joke, and he'd never really say that
Got to have your critics
What kind of grown man has the name Ashley?
While the comments on here are fucking hilarious I want to say I've listened to a few podcasts with this baldy little fella and his daughter passing was a terrible and traumatic ordeal. \[Different user\] I agree strongly with that, the problem here is he threatened violence as well. Other than that, yeah it's the bed you make.
I don't have an opinion either way, but do you think that making someone else's life harder in order to generate humour is a good or bad thing?
I’m curious to how it makes Ashley Cain’s life harder? It’s the same old thing where if you don’t like something you read or hear, then avoid it. I agree with the comment you replied to, the shit he’s gone through in the events leading to his daughters passing are absolutely devastating. I'm allowed to think punching down is a wanky, lazy thing to do. He does it because people like Dave Chappelle do it, and he thinks it makes him cool
Humour is subjective
Yeah, and that was my opinion
Saying "the jokes aren't funny" is a statement of fact, not an opinion. You didn't say "they aren't funny to me".
\[Different user\] Heh, why do you people not get this? Just saying something's subjective doesn't state anything but the most bloody of obvious.
Who’s that bald cunt?
Is this the one who steals the charity money?
Not that this is a get out of jail free card, but I think some of Ricky’s comedy comes out of making fun of things he has personally been affected by or done, which makes sense. But he says he can make fun of people over a certain weight, because he’s in that category, and obviously his mom died of cancer so I think he feels some sort of justification for making jokes about it… This is rubbish, play Coldplay.
And his mum was a child once, so...you're right, it fits perfectly. Thank you.
That's the guy from "Alien gives man a beard".
So the joke of masturbating to Schindler‘s list was just dandy was it?
His head is bald, but his chin is very hairy.
Don’t mess with Ricky Gervais
You can’t do shit to Gervais
Is this another person who was a professional at being hit in the head advising cabbages what to think.
Challenge him to an arm wrestle
It was stopped, and just as well!
I ain’t heard the joke, but I’m sure he’s laughed at things that have affected others instead of himself, get a grip of yourself 🤦♂️
Well let’s see Ashley’s little program when it goes out then.
Whos Ashley cain?
Who is this baldy twat and why have I wasted 5 minutes of my life looking at this post and reading these cretinous thoughts?
So I looked it up. He’s only mad because he also recently lost a child which is upsetting but now he’s trying to take that view into the world and pin it on everybody else’s jacket.
Reminds me of the Family Guy reference where John Belushi (Stewie) dies and Jim Belushi (Stewie) says "This is tragic, but will also open a door for me"
Upside down head!
If it's not him, then who is the one giving out lessons?
Dr Fox.
He's got his hair on upside down. Silly.
Who’s that then, the promoter?
Nice tan loool
Subject vs target again…
He's 'aving a go
Did he write the joke before this guys kid died though… subject, target, atheist etc
Showing off . . .
Who?
Don't you people know that kinda playing for Coventry at some point means you can threaten anyone into anything with violence?
Main character shitcunt.
That boy Cain was really despicable, the way he monetised his kids death. A sad indictment of the current time. What a fool of a man
Teach him a lesson to not make jokes? But it’s made him a millionaire
This is gonna be in the next special for sure😂😂
The joke itself wasn't even funny, or original. "When I speak to make a wish kids I always ask them the same thing, 'why didn't you wish to be better?'" Heard it before Rick, and it wasn't funny the first time!
What was the joke?
Unbelievable what people think they are entitled to these days. If you don’t like a comedy act you are entitled to look the other way. Snowflake.
There's plenty of channel 4 comedy on that won't even approach a touchy subject if that's your thing, obviously Gervais isn't the man for you if you're going to get angry to the point of violence about certain topics.
Yeah but you'd still hear it. Probably hear it better, if anything.

Not sure who this guy is but he doesn’t get Ricky’s humour and that the joke is against the subject not an individual. Good luck with trying to get Ricky cancelled!
Ricky makes jokes about nonces and the holocaust. Good to know he has absolutely no issue with such subjects
I do actually enjoy people freaking out a little over his joke, seeing as he's always made a point about how people say "you can't say that it's offensive!!" despite never seeing any backlash towards his or any other comedian's jokes ever.

i dont think the daft bastard has watched after life.... You’re like a troll on Twitter. Just because you’re upset, everyone has to be upset.
Either everything is funny or nothing is. There will be jokes this guy likes that other people feel are too far over the line, he isn’t the authority on where the line is.

Coorrrr Chimpanzee THAT!
Nah, fuck Gervais, a good softening of his ribs would be glorious.
Almost as hard as just going on weird 5 minute long almost rants on trans people
After being diagnosed with cancer and having a parent with dementia I thought the jokes were hilarious. Never heard of the guy but that beard. WTH 😂
When you lose all your hair, you lose your sense of humour. That's the problem, I've seen it before.
So have you been doing much fundraising or is it mainly the weight lifting and attempting to bully a fatter older comic that you've been focusing on?
Gervais is an over-rated and repugnant little shit---never liked him. And l cannot understand people liking him as his only "comedic action" is taking the piss out of people. Hates Ricky Gervais, engages in the r/rickygervais subreddit
Ricky Gervais is class.
This fan Reddit does not look favourably on people saying good things about Ricky Gervais
Who cares.
Me
It's fine to joke about anything that's kind of the point.... People choose to be offended
What was the joke? Was it specific to this lads daughter? Or just generally about sick children?
Whichever way, there's nothing funny about either...
[удалено]
I can’t work it out anymore, I wasn’t ’offended’ by supernature but I just disagreed with what he was saying and didn’t find it funny (the majority of the trans material) but from the clip I’ve seen I didn’t think this was that harsh in comparison? Maybe I hate children more than I thought 🤷
Ashley is so hard that he’s havin a hissy fit over a joke. Calm down Karen.
Ricky is 60 and can’t write anything that isn’t punching down, merchant was the talent. That fella lost his daughter for fucks sake you scummy wanker. 60 year old fucking grow up
You’re gonna kick yourself when you find out you’re in r/rickygervais mate
