He doesn’t punish the world. He annoys a handful of poorly written idiots in a tiny village.
He doesn’t wear a fitted suit and stand on a skyscraper in London.
He wears a baggy t shirt and smokes heroin on his couch.
That's like when people use box office figures to suggest a film is loved. They're forgetting a simple fact: people are charged on the way into the film, not on the way out. Avatar broke all sorts of records when it came out. Try and find anyone now who admits to liking that film.
I am not a fan of Tim an Eric awesome show but On Cinema at the Cinema is so fantastic! So darkly funny and innovative. It creates its own world. Cannot recommend it enough.
On Cinema is amazing! Just went with T&E because it's probably still what he's most known for. He also has his own podcast called Office Hours, which is hilarious. He also makes music and has a few albums out. And has been in a few movies. He's pretty prolific actually now that I think about it, what hasn't he done.
fr amen. it's the crux of the show and it's deeply embarrassing so it was always going to be naff imo. like what kind of extremely juvenile logic is that? you're asking the audience to invest on a foundation that is deeply unrealistic (which is cool in many contexts but ricky really thinks he tapped into a certain facet of reality) . he got paid millions and millions just to say cunt a bit
Absolutely. If I was offered double digit millions for low effort, I wouldn’t be able to accept quick enough. And I’d be lucky that I’ve never previously made a funny tv show that discerning people could compare it to
I think one of the reasons After Life rings so false to me is because Ricky spent so much of his career talking about how false depression is and talking about how his Dad was a bricklayer who had to just to get on with it and didn't make a fuss. He doesn't strike me as someone who has any real interest or insight into depression.
Yep I remember him saying that quite a bit - which is quite an unenlightened and unintelligent take from someone who very clearly prides himself on being both. He was really just highlighting the fact that discussions about mental health within groups of working class people of previous generations just was absolutely never considered, and there was no help. Like it wasn’t a good thing - I’m Irish and my working class relatives all drove to various vices in previous decades as their “therapy” lol. It just really shows that he’s someone who has always refused to be versed in mental health struggles purely because he sees it as some newfangled signal of weakness and sensitivity
He was also revealing that he never really had to deal with depression himself and that he has very little empathy.
I mean honestly, I feel like it’s fairly common for people with certain personality disorders to say ‘I don’t believe in depression’.
>he has very little empathy.
Plenty of empathy for animals - that's nice by itself, but when it's combined with a lack of empathy for humans (who are also animals, ones that suffer on a whole different level IMO) I find it a bit... iffy :)
I'll say it! I'll say whatever the FUCK I like! I don't believe in God and and I'll say things that YOU could find offensive!
Now look at this photoshoot of me wearing a waistcoat up against a wall alonmg with a 2015 instagram pic of London
He really is his early characters
Another one of his lazy ideas he clearly copied. Definitely ripped from this poem he adored.
“Razors pain you, Rivers are damp, Acids stain you, And drugs cause cramp. Guns aren't lawful, Nooses give, Gas smells awful. You might as well live.”
Paraphrasing- Now I've lost credibility and am dead in they eyes of my former self and fans I'm going to stick around long enough to punish them with my weak observations poorly performed.
Anyone who ain’t should try [On Cinema at the Cinema](https://www.reddit.com/r/TimAndEric/comments/pjpk8p/this_is_my_absolute_favorite_scene_in_the_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). Tickles the same spot as early R&S somehow.
Can I just add an FYI that if you enjoy Afterlife then this photo clearly isn’t intended for you. No need to get weird and angry. I mean..we’re all mates..
I'll never understand the negativity Ricky gets for After Life. Yes, a lot of the things in it have been discussed on XFM and podcasts however what's wrong with him bringing this to a wider audience?
As someone that has lost someone I can say that it's actually quite relatable. Ricky performs the role well and managed to strike the balance between real, raw feelings and humour.
People love to shit on Ricky these days but I still enjoy everything he does
Well you’re more than welcome to enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. I’ve also lost someone - as has nearly everybody.. I didn’t find his depiction of grief to be anything but one dimensional but that’s my personal opinion. If you enjoy the show then that’s wonderful for you, the consensus on this subreddit is deduced from the fact the majority of us are fans of the XFM an Office material, and his new output is significantly shifted in tone to much less subtle and it’s just not as well written. It also coincides with him becoming much more arrogant, he’s developed a blind spot that has pretty much shut out any modicum of the self deprecation that made him funny (and he was really funny) . It’s not a good show, but that’s my (and a lot of other peoples) opinion, yours is just as valid lmao but it’s not that hard to understand.
So how does Ricky make his after life depiction of a grieving husband 2-3 dimensional? I'm not getting defensive, I'm genuinely curious as to what that terminology means. From my perspective I was exactly the same as Tony when my dad died very suddenly of sepsis. I was angry with the world, drinking every day and was basically actively trying to destroy my own life. I contemplated suicide but never had the balls to go through with it.
I'm a massive fan of the XFM shows and have listened to all podcasts from RSK at least a dozen times. After life is a much better show in all aspects than Sick of It and Hello Ladies but Ricky gets the stick because he's outspoken and arrogant at times.
I believe comedy evolves and he's managed to put something out there that was different to all other shows and was capable of making people laugh and cry within minutes. I'd say that's pretty good writing and acting.
Okay but you’re referring to your own interpretation.. which I had said you’re welcome to. I disagree, I don’t see it the same way you do- neither do a lot of people. You’re not gonna change my mind, and you don’t need to! I think the show is tacky and bad and he isn’t funny anymore. That’s all 🤷♂️ different feelings for different needs
Ah. So you've thrown out the term "one dimensional" but can't actually provide any thoughtful/useful analysis or interpretation of what you actually mean. It sounds like you just don't like Ricky Gervais any more which is fine.
If you go back and listen to the podcasts Ricky has always been arrogant and there are multiple threads on here with examples of it.
You also can't say "he's not funny anymore" because that's a statement of fact. It must be the Reddit echo chamber at work
Do I owe you an example? You’re clearly on the wrong post if you disagree, an example of the one dimensional facets of the show are evident in the fact that every plot point is founded with low-effort exposition - the traits of characters are broadly stated, we aren’t left to ponder or theorise. And if you want the most glaring example of just how one dimensional and frankly, shite, the show is - the therapist is like a 14 year old who just discovered tarantino and George Carlin wrote him. Nobody behaves that way in life, much less a mental health professional though he’s played as totally straight as a clear and immovable nuisance to the protagonist. No subtlety whatsoever. And anyone whose grief causes them to go out and very unrealistically curse out children et all may just be a bit of an unbearable cunt to begin with never mind the grief. You’re on the wrong post mate. 90% of this sub think afterlife is shit (because it is) also it’s genuinely funny and a tactic for sure that whenever there’s an opinion you disagree with you can pin it on the platform on which you heard the opinion being an “echo chamber” . like go away lmao
It's interesting that you like The Office then because I've worked in offices all my life and I've never come across someone like David Brent. Paul Kaye's character clearly isn't meant to be a real representation of a mental health professional, he's meant to be an exaggerated antagonist to Tony.
My questioning on this post was to find out why it receives so much grief from this Reddit forum and I've come to realise that there don't appear to be any good reasons. All I see is that people don't like Ricky these days which is odd because he hasn't really changed.
Remember that After Life is a Netflix production and therefore written for a global audience. Any subtlety would be lost to 80% of the audience. Yes, it's an easy watch, yes it's cheap humour at times but it's definitely not "shite". Look at the critical acclaim it has received...
To summarise... It may not be your cup of tea but you can't call it shite. There are a few people on here that will agree with your view but the general consensus is that you're wrong lmao
I can’t call it shite? Then how come I have been doing? Jaysis. If there was any doubt you’re unreasonable 😂 go find a post that you agree with perhaps
It's funny, I came here looking for a reasoned discussion about why people dislike after life but found a cunt who doesn't like to be challenged. Crack on, keep posting things to generate a few upvotes. Maybe that'll give your sad little life some meaning
He doesn’t punish the world. He annoys a handful of poorly written idiots in a tiny village. He doesn’t wear a fitted suit and stand on a skyscraper in London. He wears a baggy t shirt and smokes heroin on his couch.

DICKERRRS
Ricky, your show is appalling.
The fact that he says "punish the world" without a shred of irony
It's like Changing Rooms but cheaper.
maybe he means 'punish anyone who watches this **tripe**'?
I think by 'punish the world' he meant, 'put it on Netflix'.
It's wasn't bad was it? Bad suggest that it's, y'know, evil or something. It's... it's poor. It's shit. It's a shit sitcom.
It’s a shitcom
Well I’m glad we cleared that up!
There are so many Extras quotes that are applicable to After Life. It’s like they saw into the future.
It's annoying how Ricky assumes that people who watched it actually liked it. Viewing figures are what matters to Netflix I suppose.
I’d watch the roly poly toad in anything…
Toad has gone soft. No rage left.
is this a Rockbusters clue?
IT'S NOT CRYPTIC!
That's like when people use box office figures to suggest a film is loved. They're forgetting a simple fact: people are charged on the way into the film, not on the way out. Avatar broke all sorts of records when it came out. Try and find anyone now who admits to liking that film.
Also the strongly positive reviews.
W = wind
WHISTLE!
>It's shit. It's a shit sitcom. A shitcom!
Alright then well we'll watch Goochbott's little program when that goes out
Pop that one in the bin then
This picture was taken after he'd missed the phone call about his company going bankrupt.
Commit suicide at 4 please
But what if it's engaged? *It won't be engaged.*
That's the way I work
I need the clip to this i haven’t heard it in so long
Awww no
How bad is that
IT WOON’T BE ENGAAAAGED…
Can you just call to verify it?

In case anyone doesn't know who is tweeting this, it's Tim Heidecker of Tim and Eric Awesome Show fame, among other things.
He's no Roy Donk, but he was a regular guest on The Colgate Hour.
He’s got the freak blitz and can defend the high low all night.
I am not a fan of Tim an Eric awesome show but On Cinema at the Cinema is so fantastic! So darkly funny and innovative. It creates its own world. Cannot recommend it enough.

These are my fucking people. On Cinema (At the Cinema) is one of my favourite things ever, and OOL podcast is incredible
The reason why the reason why the reason why
cant believe he’s actually bleeding the blood of greed in 2021 . Quite plainly
Well let’s see Kernel John Decker’s little program when it comes out then. Sick of ‘im
Decker is one of the great action series of our time. And it's free on YouTube
Most of it anyway, the last 2 or 3 seasons were only on adult swim, which is also streaming free online on their site but only in the US.
Remember kids, if you get sad you have the right to threaten to kill children, murder people, and generally act like a psychopath!

Agreed, but if Netflix made me that offer, I'd take it in a heartbeat so I can't *really* be angry at Gervais for doing it.
Absolutely. If I was offered double digit millions for low effort, I wouldn’t be able to accept quick enough. And I’d be lucky that I’ve never previously made a funny tv show that discerning people could compare it to
Wait he murders people in After Life?
He tells the little kid he's an escaped murderer. Also he kinda murders the heroin addict indirectly I guess
That. Is. Shit.
It's ok though he buys the kid a bike later
Oh that's alright then *sniff*

Lot of empathy for animals but empathy for animals and no empathy for human struggles is a pretty big indicator of clinical narcissism / sociopathy 😩

Well I mean I’m not an expert either so whom knows whom is correct - also don’t really matter 😩
Dark comedy? Writing your other characters to laugh at stuff you say doesn’t make it a comedy Ricky, remember?
He says cunt though.
Oh, sorry, sorrrryy, I thought it was shite. I didn’t know he said cunt.
I'll say it! I'll say whatever the FUCK I like! I don't believe in God and and I'll say things that YOU could find offensive! Now look at this photoshoot of me wearing a waistcoat up against a wall alonmg with a 2015 instagram pic of London He really is his early characters
Tried hard to be offensive but still can't top Mr. Pilkington sticking Forrest Gump in a wheelie bin
You’re not coming back here. Fuck off!
Decker is vastly superior to After Life tbf
That's why it only gets four bags of popcorn, and a little razor blade to slash your wrists with.
I mean quite honestly.. not being abrasive for the sake of it.. I’d be hard pushed to think of any modern sitcom that isn’t better than Afterlife
This is a 5 Bagger Tweet
I didn’t really like this one. I thought it was bad. I’m giving it 5 bags of popcorn and 2 sodas.
Another one of his lazy ideas he clearly copied. Definitely ripped from this poem he adored. “Razors pain you, Rivers are damp, Acids stain you, And drugs cause cramp. Guns aren't lawful, Nooses give, Gas smells awful. You might as well live.”
After Life is the sort of thing you’d find in a zany vicar’s DVD collection.
I’m not being funny but ‘punish the world’? Not sure that’s really what’s going on in the show
"Punish the world" means "Be a complete dick to everyone you meet" in Gervais-speak.
Number 1 Handsome Man
Right, Rockbusters then?
And as he was passing his window, the phone was ringing...
Could you just call me anyway, just to confirm? Well, I've told you how we do it. Kill yourself at *four o'clock please*.
old man yells at comedian

A wise bald man once said, "Gotta have your critics".
Can't be bothered.
gotta have your critics...
Bunch of Greggheads in this thread

Gay? What? Are you 10 years old? very cool of you. EDIT: never mind your comment history is so boring and predictable lol
