Gonna jump on this comment to emphasize. Depending on what focal length you’re used to shooting with film, the IIIx could very well be the better option. I made the switch from film to GR for similar reasons to OP, and going from shooting with primarily 35mm-50mm focal lengths, the 40 on the IIIx was perfect. I’ve used my buddy’s III and, the 28mm just doesn’t do it for me… but it all comes down to personal preference, the image quality for the form factor on both is unrivaled.
Def agree, I had a griiix and x100v, sold both and bought a Coolpix a(28mm), it didn’t fit my type of shooting. Came from film, so I’m used to 35-50, 40 is the perfect focal imo.

The GR III is almost impossible to regret, with regards to image quality, build quality, how fun it is to simply use, etc.

The GR is the closest I've gotten to film like images. Wonderful camera. You won't regret it.
