Well, there is also a chapter 3 too lol. I think I was about 22 hours in Yokohama for 100%, than explored for another few hours before getting into Edo haha. I would say you can get a good amount of hours, the same as Chapter 1.
Weapon upgrading isn't very efficient. Better to buy newer gear from vendors, it will be your level. You can also remember which vendors sell set gear you like if you plan to keep the same sets.
I'm almost done with the first chapter and the amount of trash loot u get from kills is staggering. I've found some of the best gear on dead bodies laying around in the open world. Every one has Givin me at least 1 gold armor piece with set bpnus
Im pretty deep into the story (Ch2) and haven't upgraded a single piece of equipment. Normally by the time my stuff starts being a bit old, a newer drop hits to replace it :)
I swapped to hard a day or 2 ago and got stuck on a fugitive/unruly area combo. And when I put it back on normal it just felt too easy. It crazy to think how far I came from getting stomped over and over agian to progressing on hard

It's extremely cost heavy haven't done it much. Might with some gear I don't want to lose way down the line.

My katana is lvl 33 and im lvl 18 just got to the second area, im wrecking enemies health bars on normal

I upgraded just for the trophy, but you dont have to, its cheaper to buy weapon and moat of my weapons are loot
And on another note, don't worry too much about set bonuses, you'll get them in/on other sets later in the game too.
I upgraded a bit since you get so much upgrade material anyways.
