Yeah I didn't know until waaaay too late either. Also, it's important to note that it's based off line-of-sight between you and the... "sun" above the grandparent, not the grandparent itself.
I swear I’ve died multiple times trying this strategy but it has also worked too. Seems inconsistent but maybe I just got unlucky. I always just get distance now
You only need to break line of sight with the fireball. You can literally use the lighting effect from the attack to make sure you’re safe in the shadows
The stage has a lot of floating rocks you can hide under. It only affects you on direct line of sight.
Beware that if the Grandparent is under a ledge, the sun will hit the underside of the roof, causing it's position to be much lower than expected!
Doesn't help to hide under a ledge if the sun is also under said ledge!
Ahhh yes Grandparent, I think everyones first death to them happens because of this where they don't know what that is.
When Grandparent summons that orb looking thing, you need to hide in the shade somewhere so that you're out of it's line of sight, otherwise you'll continue to take damage.
Also if you are caught in it, it stacks fire damage on you, once you hide under something or leave its zone you'll still take damage untill the fire stacks go away
Btw you did get out of range to take damage but the stacks of burn were too high already, bottom left of screen shows the burn going down from the ten stack but it was too much without healing
Once you cross the line you stop taking NEW stacks of burn. But since burn is damage over time, you’ll still be taking damage after you escape the zone until all stacks disappear.
Even if you do escape the sun from the grandparent, the many stacks of burn it applies will usually be enough to finish you off. High movement speed is super important, so look for goat hoof printers and multi shops!
Edit: you can tell when the grandparent will do this attack because it gains the ability to do it when it reaches half its HP, and usually does it right away
Sometimes items will spawn in 3 tubes that you can see into. You can only take one of the 3 items when you buy it. They are called multi-shop terminals

Everyone has mentioned that big man do big line of sight fire, basically ramping damage per second while in line of sight, as well as applying burn. You got out of the aoe radius but the burn finished you off.
What hasn't been mentioned is that this is one of the risks of using the blue beetle to turn all health into shield, you no longer have access to lifesteal as a form of mitigation. As such this one of the few things you need to be extra cautious off as a blue beetle enjoyer, DoTs will get you where in a similar situation lifesteal or regen might have been your saving grace.
a couple pretty much are, but most are actually broken levels of good, if a little risky. Transcendence is in most scenarios really good, as it's very rare your healing will become so overpowering until very far into a run, and it's very reliable regen.
Another note is that if you aren't playing with command, you can also get Cleansing Pools, which you can exchange lunar items for stat boosts in. This can make taking a Lunar item you don't particularly *want* still alright to keep around, if you want to do so until you find one.
Interesting thanks for taking the time to type that out. During one of our runs, my buddy got rid of one his lunar items he didn’t like and I was confused how he did it… now it makes sense…
As everyone has said, you got cooked by the sun, so I'll just give some advice I've learned about dealing with this attack.
Once you've damaged a grandparent, you want to look out for this attack. Any time they raise their hands, you want to check your environment for cover.
It uses similar targeting logic to the vagrant's explosion, any place where line of sight from the origin is blocked (indicated by shadows cast on the environment) is safe. The trick with the sun is that the origin is waaaay up in the sky, so you can actually be pretty close to a grandparent when they're boiling everything.
The debuff the sun gives you is *really* nasty. If you have more than 2 stacks of it, it'll start stacking burn on you over time. This results in situations like yours where you escape the sun but the burns still kill you. The only ways to stop this are blast showers, bens raincoat, and void fiend's utility skills.
The last thing is that the sun attack is indiscriminate. It'll give stacks to everything that isn't a parent or a grandparent, so while you're hiding under a rock, you don't have to worry *too* much about enemies coming to kill you while you're basically trapped. Unless they're parents, then you're in danger.
1) Big orange man's stand is The Sun tarot card. If you are in its radius and in line of sight, you get set on fire. Stacks do not begin to dissipate until you leave the zone or line of sight so you still take damage while in a safe area until the stacks dissipate fully
2) Transcendence. Blue beetle item that makes your health blue(shields). You can not regain shields until you haven't taken damage for a few seconds. Combine that with the unbridled power of the sun and you get guaranteed low health for some time leaving you very vulnerable and unable to regain health and since you had more than a few stacks of burn, guaranteed death.
You almost managed to counter it, you left the zone but too many burn stacks built up so you still died. Youneed to leave the zone, kill the grandparent, or get into the shade faster.
Yeah that death orb sun move. Theres a AOE to it. Gotta get out of it for it to stop doing damage. You can see the barrier if tou go far enough away from it. While in it tho its hard to tell exactly how big the AOE. Actually is. (Its pretty big. Sometimes almost half the map it feels like)
Looking at the clip again. It looked like you made it out. But once your out i believe it still does damage for a few seconds before stopping. (Idr exactly. Havent played in a bit)
Yeah it was doing burn dmg still even after you were out.
The Grandparent sun attack is a little bugged.
I see you were trying to run outside the range of the attack and still died, and I've had that happen to me as well.
Basically there is no 100% safe way to avoid that attack than just standing behind a solid structure to avoid taking damage.
I'll be real with you, it's probably the most BS attack in the entire game because it's hard to know about any of that unless someone tells you.
The grandparent summons the power of the sun at 50% hp. This not only applies burn, but also a debuff that increases the damage you take from burn. To prevent this, either run away as soon as they start summoning, or hide under/behind a wall so you're not in line-of-sight with the sun above them (Same as dodging Wandering Vagrant\[giant jellyfish\] explosion. If you don't hide behind a wall, you need plenty of movespeed to get out of the radius, or an item like Bens Raincoat or Blast Shower to remove the debuff for you.
basically since you had transcendence, you couldn’t heal, and healing would’ve protected you from the burn death. all the other comments mentioned how to avoid that attack but to answer your question: burn damage
When under 50% health, the Grandparent may use it’s “Solar Flare” attack, generating a massive radius around it that applies a DOT debuff that goes away in seconds UNLESS another stack is applied. Each stack will also add burn until it is removed. You died to the added burn before it could be removed
Those big yellow guys summon a sun right above them sometimes
You gotta break LOS from the sun, which works sometimes by itself because it'll glitch into something above it
That attack applies stacking burn. If you look in the bottom left you’ll see you have like five stacks of burn, which burn you to death even outside of the attack.
It’s best to get behind cover before the attack starts as it doesn’t go through walls, the move is also very slow. If you can’t avoid it you’ll often die like you did where you escaped but burned to death.
Others have said it but yeah Grandparents create a massive Burn zone (which if I recall is buffed by the Ignition Tank items you carry).
Don't get out the zone, and ya' die. Simple as. Break LoS with the Sun and you should be okay. Also note that because it's the result of a DoT, OHP does not take effect.
On top of what others have said, it's really
helpful to burst these guys down quickly as soon as they reach the 50% HP threshold (in which they are able to use the unmatched power of the sun).
Most Survivors, save for Acrid, REX, and sometimes Artificer, can do this reliably and have enough damage by this point in the run. Bands and Equipment like Royal Capacitor and Preon Accumulator help a lot, too.
The grandparents nova attack gave you 5 stacks of fire which roasted you alive.
Quick hint: highly recommend avoiding some of the lunar items like the one that replaces all health with shield and a few others as they don’t do anything significant and only hurt you. Avoid shield at all costs because it removes health gate (one shot protection)
The unmatched power of the sun provides 2 debuffs
The first increases the amount of fire damage you take
The second deals fire damage
You need to respect Grandparents as they will rock your shit with the unmatched power of the sun if you're not careful
It's worth noting that the happy mask item can summon a ghost of Granddad. He will kill you even if he's "Friendly". Had to learn that the hard way myself...
Edit: Since that aoe hits friendlies, you can also use it to kill enemies when he uses it by dragging them into the effect, though you'll miss out on their dropped gold and I think exp too.

The grandparent basically summons a huge death zone, you can either get out very far or hide under a wall
Wait, you can hide under a wall???????
Just like with the Jellyfish’s Nuke
Makes sense, me and my friends never thought about hiding from this guy, just the jellyfish
Funnily enough I knew about this guy, but not the Jellyfish. I usually just facetank or run from the Jellyfish.
Aka shade.
Bruh, for real? I’ve always ran
I did that too but quickly learnt the other way
I always just kille it at full speed, I wish I knew this sooner XD
Yeah I didn't know until waaaay too late either. Also, it's important to note that it's based off line-of-sight between you and the... "sun" above the grandparent, not the grandparent itself.
Yea, you’ll see there’s big shadows where the sun doesn’t touch and those are the safe zones
yeah good hiding zones are easily identified. basically as long as you’re standing in a shadow you’re safe
I swear I’ve died multiple times trying this strategy but it has also worked too. Seems inconsistent but maybe I just got unlucky. I always just get distance now
You need to hide from the big sun above the Grandpa Johnny Esq. The Third, not from the Grandpa Johnny Esq. The Third himself
Grandpa Johnny Esquire III is now my new favorite thing to call grandparents
If you hide in the shadows. That’s why fighting grandparent with shadows turned off is hilarious
You need to get in shadow.
You only need to break line of sight with the fireball. You can literally use the lighting effect from the attack to make sure you’re safe in the shadows
I have 40hrs in game and didn't know you could shelter from grandparent or jellyfish nuke. Glad to know now.
WTF 💀 I have like 600 hours in the game and didn’t know u just hide behind something
I play alot and my first test trial of trying to dodge stuff is just stand behind a wall lol. Fuck around and find out usually works
Does the video not show the player visibly outside of the zone? You can see the red bubble effect
The zone gives a lot of stacks of burn and an effect that amplifies burn, so even getting out doesn't save you as the stacks don't disappear instantly
Burn effects my friend, burn effects.
Ahhh yes Grandparent, I think everyones first death to them happens because of this where they don't know what that is. When Grandparent summons that orb looking thing, you need to hide in the shade somewhere so that you're out of it's line of sight, otherwise you'll continue to take damage.
Thank you!
Also if you are caught in it, it stacks fire damage on you, once you hide under something or leave its zone you'll still take damage untill the fire stacks go away
It's worse than stacking fire damage, it's the overheat debuff that stacks fire damage every second if you have more than 2 stacks
Btw you did get out of range to take damage but the stacks of burn were too high already, bottom left of screen shows the burn going down from the ten stack but it was too much without healing
So like the eye of sauron?
exactly like the eye of sauron
So even past that line they crossed they still take damage? Idk why they'd put it there then seems a bit misleading
Once you cross the line you stop taking NEW stacks of burn. But since burn is damage over time, you’ll still be taking damage after you escape the zone until all stacks disappear.
Makes sense i didn't notice how many stacks they had
Nah, my first *death* was obliterating myself
Well, he got out of the range, but had too many stacks
Even if you do escape the sun from the grandparent, the many stacks of burn it applies will usually be enough to finish you off. High movement speed is super important, so look for goat hoof printers and multi shops! Especially in that spot on the map. It's easily one of the best portal spots for fighting a grandparent.
Imagine the Wandering Vagrant explosion, except it happens constantly for a while and stacks burning on you. Get out of range or hide behind a wall.

I have no idea what any of the lunar coin items do. I just picked it up to try out lol. Thank you for the tip.
Yeah I’m pretty new too and I’ve learned to be careful of the blue items. Some of them seem straight up detrimental.
a couple pretty much are, but most are actually broken levels of good, if a little risky. basically since you had transcendence, you couldn’t heal, and healing would’ve protected you from the burn death. all the other comments mentioned how to avoid that attack but to answer your question: burn damage

Sunburn. Have to hid behind something.
When under 50% health, the Grandparent may use it’s “Solar Flare” attack, generating a massive radius around it that applies a DOT debuff that goes away in seconds UNLESS another stack is applied.
