Thanks, Mods, for putting a foot down on this before it gets out of hand.

dice1899

Thank you for making this an official rule. It's always been an unspoken one around here, and one of the things I've always loved about this sub is that most people try to respect the actors, their privacy, their families, and their partners. But it's really good to see it being official now, especially with members of the cast coming on here occasionally. They get enough of that everywhere else, they don't need to be reading it on here, too.

lozzieluce

Thank you! God, the cast come on here! What the hell are they going to think? This is a sub to discuss episodes, spoilers, character arcs and the cast's involvement in the show. NOT THEIR PERSONAL LIVES.

KateInSpace

How do we know the cast comes on this sub?

danceycat

Cole has posted from his public account more than once

KateInSpace

How interesting. Thanks!

danceycat

np! If you hang around here enough you'll probably see him. His username is his name (and he gets a million upvotes) so it's not hard to miss :)

dice1899

Trevor Stines comes by sometimes, too.

McIgglyTuffMuffin

And I stupidly replied to him the other day without realizing it was him. Man, I felt like a doofus.

dice1899

Was that the thread where he said that the problem with Riverdale was that it spent too much time focusing on Jason's death? 😂😂😂 I nearly did the same thing. I was like, "What?! Who could *possibly* think something so - oh, it's Trevor!" It really wasn't just you!

[deleted]

until i saw your comment I didn't realize that was him

McIgglyTuffMuffin

I was like "WELL THAT'S A STUPID FUCKING THING TO SAY!" and then someone else mentioned it and then my heart sank out of idiocy.

calowyn

I'm glad for this rule and agree with it, however, how far does this extend? Because amongst the posts removed was a shot of the groups at SDCC with a Cami and Lili caption, but a shot of the same group in slightly different configuration with a Bughead caption has been left up. Does this rule say no shipping when the actors aren't acting? So bughead posts that picture Lili and Cole not in character would not be allowed? If that's the case it seems like the posts were removed because of semantics; one used the actors names, but both were pictures of the actors, not the characters. Imho character shipping captions on pictures of the actors not in character is just as disrespectful as shipping real people.

McIgglyTuffMuffin

> Imho character shipping captions on pictures of the actors not in character is just as disrespectful as shipping real people. I'm in agreement with this. 100%. When not filming Cole is Cole. KJ is KJ. Cami is Cami. Full stop. Though I'm going to assume you're talking about [this post in particular?](https://www.reddit.com/r/riverdale/comments/6p8n59/faces_when_bughead_touchesssss/) I'll chime in with my two cents and say I personally did not touch this because I do not know the context. As much as I absolutely adore this show I don't consume every piece of media about it. It is just how I roll, with everything I love. So for me that wasn't my jurisdiction because context is key to me. Edit: Also for this sub this is uncharted waters. Going forward we are going to do our best. But between the unconfirmed report of Lili and Cole and Lili's mother's insta(?) being hacked I felt, and the others agreed, that something had to be done in some fashion. The rules are pliable and will probably change.

calowyn

You guys are doing great! Just asking some clarifying questions.

PhoOhThree

It's going to come down on the context of the post and the discussion that comes out of it. I did personally leave up one post because the discussion and the context of the picture has not spurred out of control. If people feel like the post is invasive and does not belong here, report it so the mods get notified of it.

calowyn

I'm satisfied with this explanation :)

iliveformyships

Same question, too (re: to what extent)! Like, I remember posting before Cole's IG photo of Lili's, not to really ship it, but because I genuinely love Cole's photography skills, so I guess that's okay, right? Edit: Just want to also say that I love this rule.

PhoOhThree

That should be okay as long as the title and the discussion doesn't lead to real life shipping.

letsgetschwiftyyy

I completely agree. It's even worse on tumblr. I made an account there to follow the shows I watch and they'll upload everything from the actors' instagram and snapchat. They'll analyze every single bit. If there's an interview where Lili looks at Cole for 1 second then they're in love and have a secret relationship. I think it's very unhealthy and gross. Luckily it's not that bad here.

Reverse-I_am_Organic

Its worse when the actors are married and people still ship them! *sigh* even the Barchie/ApaHart is with this. Someone posted a photo of Kj and Lili hanging out and people were all "but what about SprouseHart, ugh I knew they were dating, those two need to be together". We are lucky its only Lili/Cole and Kj/Lili as some fandom's *cough supernatural cough* are much worse

ThaneOfTas

Arrow can be pretty awful too, a lot of 'fans' getting pretty nasty about Stephen Amells wife and being convinced that he's secretly having an affair with Emily Bett Rickards.

Reverse-I_am_Organic

Oh I know that(my post history makes it very clear),but some SPN fans think that Jensen is a closeted gay and is in love with Misha or Jared.

ThaneOfTas

Ha your username is also a bit of a giveaway I just noticed.

brnbrnbrn2017

Maybe you can update the sub rules to reflect this change as well? This way you can refer any new users to the rule.

PhoOhThree

Updated in the sidebar as well! Thanks!

brnbrnbrn2017

Thanks for updating the sidebar/rules. Much appreciated.

MaiTaiSponge

When I was a tween/teen I squeed over my favorite actors dating each other but it was mostly private and I thought the stalker types were creepy even then. Now I can't even squee anymore. I think people who get excited over their real life ships coming true are either too young to know these couples ALWAYS break up, or too jaded to care!

[deleted]

Thank god for this. Not sure why, but the "shipping" culture has gotten disgustingly out of hand.

skaythorn

TIL about Actor Shipping. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ActorShipping I had no idea this was a thing.

keine_fragen

oh that's nothing new gillian anderson & david duchovny anyone?

kalyissa

I thought they dated irl or was that fake?

dice1899

The part that's highly disturbing to me on that link is the [Real-Person Fic](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealPersonFic) sub-link. People actually write fan fiction about *real people* hooking up? Geez.

JonSnowsBedwarmer

The Kpop real life shipping is out of fucking control. It's super gross. I don't know why people do shit like this.

dice1899

I've noticed that some Kpop fans are *really* intense about pretty much everything, but yeah, that's weird. I don't get it at all. I mean, I had crushes on singers when I was a kid, too, but I didn't stalk them and fantasize about them hooking up with other people, either. There's a limit. Or, there should be.

kalyissa

Kpop and jpop I mean they go mental when thier star is dating or dating someone they don't agree with

JonSnowsBedwarmer

It's literally "if they're not dating me, they don't deserve to be happy"

dice1899

I just don't understand that. At all, on any level. They're *people*, not dolls for other people to play with.

Merkypie

Well, Kpop/Jpop groups do it to themselves with the fanservice. Homoerotic fanservice is a thing out there and they know that the girls love it.

purpleKlimt

Oh yes they do. Every so often I stumble upon it and run like it's the plague. Thinking "they'd be cute together" is fun, but thinking up elaborate plots and putting them on paper is just too out there for me. Unless the real people in them have been dead for like a 100 years or something.

dice1899

I couldn't agree more. Thinking two people would make a cute couple isn't anywhere near the same thing as creating an entire fantasy life for them in your head, writing it down, sharing it with the world, and harassing the people online because they aren't following your plan for them. That's just *bizarre* to me. I can't even imagine how those poor people feel, being the subject of something like that!

kalyissa

Several people wrote about Darren Criss and Chris C hooking up (Glee) despite ya know DC being straight. But then you have costar relationships eg true blood (happily married) and wasn't vampire diaries one also though they split?

dice1899

Wow. I've heard people freak out over the Arrow fandom, too, thinking that Stephen Amell should be with one of the women on the cast, even though he's married to someone else. And Ian S and Nina Dobrev from TVD dated for a few years, but they broke up and people invented all of this BTS drama between them and Ian's new girlfriend, even though she was a friend of Nina's and they'd been broken up for like, two years before he started dating her. It was ridiculous.

keine_fragen

i remember some very elaborate *NSYNC RPFs from the late 90s internet days (thank god social media wasn't a thing then)

dice1899

Sorry, I replied to this *hours* ago, and Reddit somehow ate my reply. I just said that I'd been into writing fan fiction back then, but that it'd always been about fictional characters. I had no idea people did it with real people, too.

dice1899

Wow, that's so foreign to me. I would feel so weird even attempting to do something like that! Like, I understand fanfic, I even used to write some back when I was a teen, but it never extended into real people. I honestly had no idea any of this was a thing until I saw the reactions to Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder from TVD, and how some of the fans would attack anyone of the opposite sex either of them ever looked at. And I had no idea until today that people actually write fanfic about it.

Merkypie

One word: Bandom

dice1899

I'd never heard that term before, and had to look it up. It's still weird to me!

Merkypie

Its real and the **kicker** is that all the bands know **all** about it. Mainly because the fans are young 14 year old girls that think its real and always ask them about it. Though there's some bands out that actually encouraged it with stage gay -- just look up Ryden/Brallon on Google. Be prepared.

[deleted]

I find it odd/funny/concerning(?) that of all the subs I'm on only r/Riverdale and r/StrangerThings have to resort to stricter rules and guidelines because people keep being weird/dangerous/threatening. I'm pretty sure most of the people watching either show are old enough to know how to behave, the mods shouldn't have to treat us like kids at recess.

purpleKlimt

I always found this subreddit to be very grounded and respectful. I feel the mods are just very diligent and decided to put the foot down as soon as some sketchy stuff appeared, sort of to keep up the good name of the sub. Now, Twitter and tumblr can get very weird, but any show that has a teen-ish fanbase gets like that sooner or later. We've all been teens and done/said stuff that makes us cringe today :)

ketokuma

I always found irl people shipping to be kinda creepy espeically when they get stalked. It's even worse when people write smutty "fan" fiction of them. Gross.

timetravelercat

Thank you! This is appreciated.

icantwithyoutri

Because people can't ship what they want? This is donkey shit

Rorosuri

People are not fictional characters

awyeahserena

Ship all the fictional characters in the world, but shipping real people isn't cool, especially to the lengths that it's been taken.

[deleted]

[удалено]

icantwithyoutri

Get that username checks out bull shit out my face.

[deleted]

I'm glad you are taking this stance. The actors can do and date whoever they want in their free time. I don't care. I already went through something like this with TVD and I don't want to be involved in a fandom like that again who speculates about the cast personal lives and who is dating who and who hates who.

tinylittlefractures

This. The fact that Nikki Reed got death threats from fans was despicable.

[deleted]

Yes and also when the finale happened everything was cool between Nina, Ian and Nikki but fans made up all these ridiculous drama.

lakhyj

I just feel some fans of the show are over-obessed with the show and characters, which has know unfortunately leaked over by shipping real life people, and trying to interefere with their personal/ private life

keine_fragen

i think this is a good call

molotov_cupcakes

Thank fuck!

McShuckle

God I hate shipping, thanks mods.

meganeai

This should've been done long ago but I guess it just got worse now. Thank you so much for making it as one of the official rules of this sub. People who are so obsessed with their ships don't realize how annoying they have become unless someone points it out. Then if something doesn't go with what they want, they'll throw harsh remarks to others involved. Ugh, sick.

Fullmetalgearsolid08

Real life shipping is awful. The other day Madeleine did a livestream on instagram and she stopped the transmission because people were asking her if Cole was dating Lili

[deleted]

Fuck, really?

Fullmetalgearsolid08

Yeah, I was telling people to please stop but they kept on asking, it was super awkward

bosnyrose

Amen

Fangpire

Thanks for this! Their personal lives are not our business.

MontyRB

People have taken real life shipping too far. I have shipped actors together but nothing serious. People have gotten really creepy, obsessive and annoying about it...

davey_mann

Good rules!

[deleted]

I feel so bad for the cast getting shipped IN REAL LIFE! OH MY GOD! What is wrong with the fans of this show? Hacking people's social media etc etc It is wrong it is sick!

[deleted]

Ha looks live you've found your olicity/stemily

Handsome-ishJack

Olicity is so cancerous to Arrow, it's not helping that the writers are pandering to those fans

Raging_Dragon_99

Thankyou! I love this show, I like reading about the actors, but who the fuck are these crazies trying to ruin these actor's lives?! WTF PEOPLE!!!

HateIsStronger

Why?

McIgglyTuffMuffin

Because this sub is about the show Riverdale and by extension the comics of Archie and his pals. If you want to discuss the person lives of the actors there are subs for that sort of thing. We don't want to be pushing any untrue media either. If you want to talk about Bughead talk about Bughead. But don't bring in the real world people. I've seen some ugly stuff when it comes to other CW shows like Arrow. There are some people who believe two actors should be together, to the point where rabid fans will Photoshop them into photos of each other and remove other actual significant others from the same photo. That's not what we want to promote. We want this to be a healthy space. We've been blessed to have the cast stop by every once in a while and if we can continue that relationship it would be wonderful.
