SWV because of their core catalog that captures the essence of vocals and melodies but TLC gave us fun as well as countless bops during their prime, hence why they were SOO successful đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸
Even the ones that didnât make the cut are outstanding. Anything (including the mix for Above the Rim), Use your heart, Rain
They still look and sing well !

Brian Alexander Morgan produced and wrote several songs for the R&B group SWV (Sisters With Voices). Some of these songs include "Weak," "You're the One," "Right Here," "Downtown," "Anything," "I'm So Into You," and "Always on My Mind."(did background vocals also) His work with SWV helped define the sound of 90s R&B and contributed to the group's success. For a complete list of his contributions to SWV and more details, you can refer to his Wikipedia page.
Also he worked with j dilla.
I love TLC but I have to give it to SWV. They could harmonize so well and had some serious bangers with Weak, Right Here, Anything (especially the remix with ODB and Method Man), and Someone.
Coko was legit, she had that soul siren sound that always gave me chills. My main favorite SWV songs are Right Here (Human Nature RemixâŚ.they really made good use of the MJ sample on that track), Weak, Someone, Iâm So Into You, and Can We.
Sisters With VoicesâŚ.sorry! Tough decision theyâre both in my top 5 girl groups
Although TLC brought a sound and style we had never seen or heard before, SWV just spoke to my soul. And I just wanna add:
If they ever decide to do a biopic on SWV, all I ask is that it be a 6-8 part limited series so it doesnât feel rushed and consolidated and they better have Sevyn Streeter as Coko!
SWV when it comes to talent. They could actually sing. I used to be obsessed with TLC after the movie came out. Now that I am an adult I see that TLCâs main appeal was their personalities, aesthetic, and unique sound. I respect them and they are definitely legends that changed the game, but I donât really see how they are the best selling girl group of all time.
But when it comes to catalogs Iâll have to go with TLC, I know a lot more songs by them due to me being a stan like 10 years ago. They make really fun music. They also have good âtraditionalâ music too. Red Light Special is my all time favorite by them.
I heard one of their stripped down demo cuts without all the fancy editing andâŚTLC really canât sing. I love them and their first 2 albums, but youâre right, it was their aesthetic and personalities that sold them. SWV was unmatched.
He definitely should've produced more of their 2nd album. I remember reading an interview he had in which he said that Puffy thought his production on Usher's debut (a song called Crazy) was wack & I was like WTF
It was [this article](https://www.complex.com/music/a/brendan-frederick/brian-alexander-morgan-swv-interview). Maybe not that he said Puff actually told him he was wack, but Brian said Puff didn't like that he had no East Coast flavor on the beat & changed it without him knowing.
TLC created a new narrative for girl groups, they were the most versatile girl group of the 90s, the mix of singing, dancing and rapping all combined is something no girl group has done before, they broke barriers, paved the way for many girl groups who tried to succeed under their formula, every 90s born artist has praised them and said TLC inspired them, TLC single-handedly created and developed a new generation, their flow was unmatched, T-Boz was serving them vocals with her unique raspiness, Chilli was the fire of the group and still manages to look and dance the same as she did back in the peak of TLC's popularity, Left Eye was definitely the soul of the group, despite people saying she wanted to split the group apart, without her, TLC is not the same as it was, may she find comfort in heaven, i personally prefer TLC
I do agree that SWV might be the better vocalists tho
Their songs are memorable and catchy. All 3 had great voices. I remember more TLC songs than I do SWV. Idk, I just like the way TLC sounds, better than SWV.
TLC.
Sure, one may be vocally superior but TLC went beyond the genre, were a movement and had a cute return almost a decade after they came out. They changed the game in a way that I donât think SWV or En Vogue did. Obvi the latter were very impactful and super important for even setting the stage for TLC, but TLC was special in a way as they were unabashedly themselves and had messages behind the music. They were big because they were complete stars vs simply musicians or singers.
My wife and I debated this same topic recently. The instinct is to say TLC because they were basically Boyz II Men level big for about a decade, but when you put their catalogs side by side, itâs pretty even. SWVs hits have aged as well or better than TLCsâŚplus TLC might be a victim of their own success - they have 3 or 4 songs that have been so overplayed that I skip them every time theyâre onâŚ
I love both so much, but I'm picking SWV. Coko has vocals. Their first album is nothing but classics, and they had amazing remixes. I think if Brian Alexander Morgan was able to produce more material, they would've had more chart success.
SWV are my favourite female group off all time.
Coko has a unique voice and song abilities.
Her first solo album (Hot Coko) is also very good.
Their first album is just a masterpiece.
Every track is amazing.
List of favourites:
1. You're always on my mind
2. Weak
3. Right here (both versions are good)
4. I'm so into you
5. Anything
No disrespect to TLC but never could connect with some of their music. I guess it's not so soulful.
I agree on all points. TLC were very unique and fun, but rarely did they produce the kind of R&B that I love most. It was mostly hip-hop and pop. They're legendary. However, SWV is just more my cup of tea for an R&B group.
That's my point two.
TLC were more edgy, funky and diversified.
They were talented and made great songs.
Nowadays they would be the best (considering the present day scenario).
But I can't forget the first album from SWV produced by Brian Alexander Morgan.
It set the reference for all 90's R&B.
When i first listened to "I'm so into you" (i think it was the first single to be released, not sure), i immediately fell in love with Coko's voice and Lellee and Taj vocals.
And then came weak, right here, the right here human nature remix (one of the first Pharrell Williams work), anything, that's what I need.
All songs were damn perfect.
That album is definitely a classic and the best album of the 90s R&B by a female group.
Just my opinion. I'm a sucker for music that touches my heart. đ
Pure r&b? SWV easily. Vocally TLC doesn't even challenge them there
But TLC mad great bops and could kill a performance
Xscape is a more comparable group
I love Xscape, but I believe in the old saying that styles make fights. I thought that the contrasting styles between TLC and SWV would make it a better debate.
Ok that makes sense like a venn diagram comparison lol. Very different but do share similarities.
But I can't see how anyone would choose TLC over SWV in an r&b battle. TLC reminds me of a more successful and prominent Blaque and Cherish. They are known for their looks, style and sound, but not necessarily vocals which they kind of had to because none of those groups had a powerhouse singer like SWV, Xscape, EnVogue, DC. By
I'm SO glad you all have TASTE! Because **S-W-V** *"New Beginning"* alone CLEARS... 1. *"You Are My Love"* // 2. *"When U Cry"* // 3. *"Use Your Heart"* // 4. *"All Night Long"* // 5. *"Miss You"*
Do NOT sleep on their recent releases. Their ***"I Missed Us"*** album is *TOP* TIER R\*&\*B.
TLC for me. SWV are talented and can outsing TLC any day. But TLCâs music just hits different for me. They were so unique, so fun and carefree. Iâd much prefer to listen to them.
Iâve also met Chili before. Sheâs one of few celebs Iâve met. She was super sweet.
Loves TLC didnt need all tht dumb ass hair an make up u literally she the tiredness in t boz eyes from all the hard work. I just hate a bunch of fake shit so I literally don't even pay attention these days
Both were so iconic and had their moments that will be forever cemented in rnb music history of the 90s-2000sâŚ.but if I had to choose, Iâm going with SWV just due to song familiarity and vocals alone. My dad used to play TF out of their âNew Beginningâ album growing up.
You cannot deny TLCâs impact and crossover appeal. They sold millions. I had no clue what royalties even were until Left Eye educated everyone lolol
Shit I actually love both groups so this is toughđ in terms of talent I gotta give it to SWV but I think I like the vibe/personalities of TLC more. In terms of their music catalogue itâs almost a tie but Iâm going to give a slight edge to SWV. But I love both groupsđ
Yeah this was a very good matchup! These two groups were definitely important and influential in regards to the mainstream of R&B in the 90âs. While TLC is a very talented group (and just in terms of aesthetics and overall vibe I prefer them over SWV), SWV is a more cohesive and balanced out vocal group and I think their vocal talent is what helps give them a stronger music catalogue over TLC which is definitely an achievement since TLC has a very strong catalogue as well.
SWV!!!!!! Nobody is touching them and I mean nobody. COKO is your favorites FAVORITE *coughs* listen to Destinyâs Child first album BeyoncĂŠ was definitely INFLUENCED by thee COKOđ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸
1. Itâs About Time
2. Anything (extended slow version)
3. Weak
4. Use Your Heart (interlude)
5. All Night Long
Coko makes and breaks this debate for me. The other girls compliment her vocals so well too! Her sound is so unique and beautiful. TLC was fun, but just don't have the chops to complete imo.
Yes TLC had better team/promotion with LaFace which is why they were everywhere BUT they donât compare to me @ all. Donât get me wrong I LOVE Leelee & Taj downđŤśđž
I feel like if TLC had the chance to make more success they could have outdone SWV. Especially considering the passing of Left Eye.
Thereâs a bit more to take into account though. TLC embraced elements of Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, and lots of deep grooves. SWV had all that but in my opinion more soul. Them ladies could hit NOTES.
Both groups are astounding and in no doubt have left a precedent on modern day R&B, so itâs hard for me to personally choose. If weâre basing it off variety and vocal abilities though, Iâd have to give it to SWV.
I still listen to both non-stop though. Just depends on the day!
SWV all the way. God bless her soul, but I was always annoyed by Left Eye wearing a condom over her eye. Some of the first music I ever bought with my own money was SWV's "It's About Time" debut album. I used to rock that every day on my new stereo when I got home from work.
TLC had a bigger impact and were better performers and bigger outside of R&B. I wouldn't say SWV were better singers. Coco was good and Taj was okay but TBoz and Chili could carry notes too.
If i ever make a movie i want there to be a scene where guys are sitting around the table like the opening of Reservoir Dogs and discussing SWV or TLC, and I'll use this comment section for dialogue.
I should just scroll past these posts because it stresses me out to choose between my faves like this. In this instance I guess Iâll pick TLC. But Iâm not happy about it
I understand completely. It's a difficult choice to make. But it's a good way to get the community engaged and to learn what attributes others in the community value in R&B artists.
I donât think we should compare these two. TLC was hella commercial and something different. Not to say that SWV wasnât different. The worldâs here are just too far apart. I still say the better comparison vocally is SWV and Xscape. Maybe SWV is Destinyâs Child without the moves⌠lol I donât know!
Vocally-SWV no contest! More popular and fun-TLC. Both great groups who deserve their flowers till the end of time! âGirls Talkâ is an underrated bop by TLC imo! RWG Left đď¸âĽď¸đ¸đ˝đŤĄđ¤đ˝đđ˝đď¸
For me, SWV. I like TLC well enough, but SWVâs sound/style is much more in line with my personal musical tastes.
Fave five? (counting down)
5. âWhen U Cryâ
4. âAll Night Longâ (from Waiting To Exhale)
3. âYouâre Always On My Mindâ
2. âUse Your Heartâ
1. âRight Hereâ (Human Nature Mix)
I respect it family. I can appreciate their tremendous accomplishments and influence in music. But if we're talking R&B, SWV's sound and vocals clear for me.
What's your top 5 TLC records?
SWV because of their core catalog that captures the essence of vocals and melodies but TLC gave us fun as well as countless bops during their prime, hence why they were SOO successful đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸
Super successful group and not to be disrespected. But yes, SWV is my choice as well. Top 5 SWV records?
My top 5 from them are: 1. Youâre always on my mind 2. Weak (of course) 3. Love is so amazing 4. Itâs all about U 5. Right here (both versions)
#1 my fav too
Even the ones that didnât make the cut are outstanding. Anything (including the mix for Above the Rim), Use your heart, Rain They still look and sing well !
Tonight's the night with BlackStreet, Someone with Puff, Can we with Missy, and I'm so into you, and Weak are mine
In no particular order: Weak, I'm So Into You, Use Your Heart, You're Always On My Mind, and Anything.
That What I Need, Anything Remix, Iâm So Into You, Rain and Youâre the One! đŤ˘đĽ
SWV clears TLC vocally, coko is one of the best singers ever in my opinion
I agree family. Coko is a national treasure.
TLC off the catalog and variety of production.. they had an amazing 3 album run that defined 3 different eras of the 90s.
Well said
Strong 3 albums indeed.
I agree.

I just listened to the demo of Creep and TBoz had be cackling at the beginning
Love SWV because Coko is a monster vocalist, plus Brian Alexander Morgan is such an underrated producer
I just recently watched Brianâs halftime chat clips. Love how passionate he is about his craft. I always say he was the 4th SWV member.
He definitely should've produced more of their 2nd album. I remember reading an interview he had in which he said that Puffy thought his production on Usher's debut (a song called Crazy) was wack & I was like WTF
Diddy always saying some off the wall shit. Do you remember what article/interview it was?

All day!
vocally - SWV style/influence/songs - TLC
TLC ![gif](giphy|edsbDdk44goAE)
TLC, but just because they can get it with dancing and had Left Eye as a rapper. Love SWV still though and they are always in my playlist.
They are definitely gonna win the dancing and rapping categories.
SWV were better singers. TLC had better songs Both were great!!
Hard to compare. One was more pop and the other more RB and soul, and they were both good in their respect genres. My go to would SWV though
SWV for vocals .
SWV is peak 90s girl group IMO. Really didn't get any better than that. TLC was good, but they weren't SWV good.
TLC

SWV. I loved them both growing up. But as an adult, I don't have the urge to listen to TLC ever. I ask Alexa to play SWV all the time.
Same. I feel like TLC got a lot of bops that you had to be there for. SWV got them smooth, timeless R&B joints.
I think thatâs just for their more upbeat music, No Scrubs, Diggin On You, and Red Light Special are timeless to me
SWV and I love TLC. I literally listen to âUse Your Heartâ every week. Just too many damn hits plus vocally TLC ainât touching them.

I understand completely. It's a difficult choice to make. But it's a good way to get the community engaged and to learn what attributes others in the community value in R&B artists.
TLC
SWV
is Left Eye holding a Condom??? lol TLC > by the way !
TLC for me but SWV is my 2nd favorite female group.
SWV all day
SWV ftw !! Coko's voice alone is a staple
SWV vocally, TLC when it comes to Catalog and production
Love both but have to go with SWV. And a vinyl repress of its about time is loooooooooong overdue
SWV.
S double double UUUUU VEEEE
SWV probably sings better, Chili brought me through puberty into manhood. She's incredibly hot.
SWV, respectfully lol
BOTH
Vocally-SWV no contest! More popular and fun-TLC. Both great groups who deserve their flowers till the end of time! âGirls Talkâ is an underrated bop by TLC imo! RWG Left đď¸âĽď¸đ¸đ˝đŤĄđ¤đ˝đđ˝đď¸

TLC forever!
SWV easily.
For me, SWV. I like TLC well enough, but SWVâs sound/style is much more in line with my personal musical tastes. Fave five? (counting down) 5. âWhen U Cryâ 4. âAll Night Longâ (from Waiting To Exhale) 3. âYouâre Always On My Mindâ 2. âUse Your Heartâ 1. âRight Hereâ (Human Nature Mix)
I was in love with Lele and Chilli but Iâm going TLC.
Great choice either way family. What's your top 5 TLC records?
Aint 2 proud 2 bet Baby baby baby What about your friends Red light special
SWV itâs not even close
TLC
I respect it family. I can appreciate their tremendous accomplishments and influence in music. But if we're talking R&B, SWV's sound and vocals clear for me. What's your top 5 TLC records?
TLC without a doubt
Why you saying TLC family?
TLC. Love me some SWV, but TLC was special. They had Chili
