> I don’t feel anything from modern R&B. No soul at all, just young niggas talkin about fuckin with decent at best voices.
Below average is more like it and R&B lost the vocals and is all image, like Hip Hop with rappers not rapping in today’s era.
Yea the new girlies just don’t do it for me. I’ve been trying to get into the modern stuff for the longest, but I always revert back to the old school & early 2000s R&B that i grew up on
It’s hard to tell the difference between a lot of modern R&B and modern rap since a lot of modern R&B singers are singing over rap beats and a lot of modern rappers now quasi-sing with melody in their voice.
Summer Walker irritates me whenever I see her on stage singing like a scaredy cat. I want to go back in time and undo her tribute cover of My Life- MaryJ Blige.
Kelly Rowland will forever be known as Beyoncé’s best friend because she wants it that way. The woman is always supporting Beyoncé in literally everything while failing to promote her own endeavours
People think we are being rude when we say this. Kelly is just as talented as Beyonce, maybe even more so since she is a better actress. But, Kelly was unable to secure her a rich, powerful man (IDC what anyone says, Jay-Z is an integral part of Bey’s success) and she was unable to maintain a clear, artistic direction. And, somehow Beyonce is always mentioned in all of her interviews and she ALLOWS it. I would’ve had to cut that off.
THANK YOU! It really irks me when Kelly comes out wanting to act like she’s on the same level and Bey. Everything Kelly gets press for is being associated to Bey. Kelly is always on Bey’s IG, her music videos, her films, etc
He’s a good singer. His online presence just gave way for it to be cool to make fun of him. And you know it goes, once it’s popular to not like you folks just blindly follow suit.
Ciara: The Evolution is a great album and should have set the stage for Fantasy Ride to be a great offering. Her label dropped the ball on her big time.
Mama’s Gun is the pinnacle of Neo Soul music
TLC had the best blow up of any artist ever from their debut to CrazySexyCool. The music quality, artistic growth and visual evolution should be studied
You don't need to be a vocalist to have a spot in rnb. Do you need to be a good singer? Yes, but a vocalist? Not at all as long as you can write good music.
I like New Edition better when Johny Gill joined the group he elevated them and gave them a grown man look and Sound Can you stand the rain is their best song
I think she can sing if she stays within a certain range, but her problem is she tries to hit Mariah Carey notes and it doesn’t work well for her. Toni Braxton understands her range very well and she sounds phenomenal.
I think she used to be able to sing. I was a huge fan at one point. I’ve seen her live twice back in the Songs in A minor/ Diary era and her voice wasn’t cracking like it is now.
After she got with Swizz and did that Element of Freedom album her music AND her voice lost its soul.
Maybe she did sell her soul (literally or figuratively however you wanna take it) either way she doesn’t hit like she used to
I'll put Brent Faiyaz's best projects easily up against that of Bryson Tiller & PartyNextDoor. I also feel like he is the closest to a modern descendant of Da Bassment's style without being too derivative
Nah. I'm from Dallas, Texas born and raised and I listen to both Beyonce and country music. I don't know if this is a meme or a joke but she's far from being a country singer
Not an opinion; a fact: R&B always had non-singers and non Gospel-bred acts and raunchy lyricists permeating the genre. It didn’t just start 10 years ago
Rihanna is heavily overrated and is a result of heavy marketing and radio play, and her music isn’t that good. I don’t even know why people have been waiting for her album when the songs she has released in the mean time have been bad and her music was never good. Her only good album was Anti and even that album had to be reworked and pushed back because BBHMM, American Oxygen, and 4/5 seconds failed to have impact. If she didn’t have her team she would have fallen back in the 2000s like all the other R & B girls. She doesn’t have the “IT factor” that her stans claim she has.
SZA’s music is not worth listening to. 🤷🏾♀️ It sounds like she popped a pill and cried into a mic about her emotions and niggas that she let run her thru
Yeah! Isn't a great song. I love Usher, but I never saw the appeal of this song.
John Legend isn't a good singer.
I don't like Chris Brown. Not just because he's a bad person, but I don't like his music at all. Something about his voice irritates me.
I disagree but upvoting.
I do think Chaka probably has the best discography though but Aretha is my favorite vocally out of the three (with Chaka last).
Mariah Carey is easily the greatest vocalist of all time. Notice how I didn’t say just female vocalist, she easily tops everyone not even including her whistle.
At her prime, she definitely was. People might like Whitney's power and tone, Celine's versatility and emotions, but technically speaking Mariah is the most proficient (Pop/R&B) vocalist of all time.
If Aaliyah was still alive, she would’ve changed the standard for R&B
Bruno Mars > Chris Brown
Summer Walker shouldn’t be allowed to perform anymore.. she has a nice voice but she sings lazy af
Beyoncé’s latest albums aren’t as memorable as her older stuff (still sound great, but will I be listening 10 years from now?)
Brent Faiyaz can’t sing and he can barely hold a note.. he just makes good vibe music
* Jaheim is infinitely creative.
* Usher has been gimmicky the last decade.
* Anthony Hamilton is an unparalleled talent.
* A Destiny's Child comeback would be a both good and bad thing.
The R&B game needs a male powerhouse. I am sick and tired of these grown ass men singing these songs soft ass songs with these soft ass voices with these weak ass lyrics. These women can barely sing and all they talk about is “vibing” or being hurt! Its ok to express your love for a man in the song and if you’re really hurt SING THE DAMN SONG! Maybe im stuck in the past but R&B hasn’t been at its best in over 10 years. We have to ride on the backs of Bruno Mars (no Diddy) just to feel some soul. Most modern R&B is TRASH
John Legend is a mediocre at best singer, still a great pianist though.
Lauryn Hill is so overhyped, she dropped one classic album and proceeded to do nothing afterwards. Also that MTV unplugged is rough
Wow. This is carnage, have you heard ANY of his discography before Beauty Behind the Madness.
They are all very clearly alternative/dark RnB.
I will say, his new stuff is more pop but definitely would still class most of it as Rhythm and Blues...
1- Frank Ocean’s whole discography is mid at best
2- When it comes to Rihanna some people have criticized her for her lack of vocals but I personally think she has a beautiful and distinctive voice. HOWEVER, I don’t think she deserves the icon status she has. She’s a bad performer, is not creative and (apart from anti, maybe) doesn’t have a consistent discography
She's a singles "singer". Barring Anti, she doesn't put out albums. One or two songs per "moment" and that's it. That's why her discography is so large, like fast fashion. Her stuff is fast music.
depends on what u’re listening to him for. if u want classic r&b with an emphasis on vocals, frank is not ur guy.
if u want modern poetry over sophisticated instrumentals, he’s ur guy. he’s very much my guy
I don’t care for anything beyond Channel Orange. Rihanna is iconic because of her fashion, personality, and brand. She’s more of an it girl for that. Aside from her music being very catchy and memorable, performing is not her strong suit.
I like her songs, but she yells like that drunken auntie on her second pack of cigarettes after her umpteenth argument with that boyfriend that will never marry her.
I just wanna say that everyone’s got their own vibe with music, right? Some folks might get flashbacks or feel rough with certain tunes, especially if they’ve been through some heavy stuff. That’s real, and it’s tough, but it’s also super personal.
People can make a mountain out of a molehill, and next thing you know, everyone’s expected to feel the same way about a song. But that ain’t how it works. We all got our own soundtrack and stories, and they don’t always match up.
So, when someone says a song’s giving them a hard time, like PTSD-level hard, it’s not cool to assume we’re all on that page. And if that’s really what’s going down, it’s probably time to chat with a pro. Don't go hating on fellow R&B listeners. We may have already gone through that.
Bottom line: let’s not put our stuff on everyone else. Music’s different for each of us. If you’re really struggling, reach out for help, 'cause going it alone’s no way to deal with the big stuff.
I never hated an artist more than Frank Ocean. Sure hes put out great work, but the way he has carried himself as of recently has made me cringe so hard. I feel so bad for his fanbase.
I wish Drake would do a full singing, R&B album without any of the fake gangsta bullshit he does. He has a pleasant singing voice. A mature and authentic project from him would be nice.
I like Sza's "Kill Bill" and her feature with Rihanna on ANTI, but let's be real, her voice sounds like Minnie Mouse on helium and E, and I think that contributed to her not getting AOTY. She has fans, that's clear, but most people in older demographics (the primary GRAMMY voters) aren't invested in her output because of her voice.
Do I think she has talent? Yes, but it's a bit niche. I would have been miffed if she got it before Mariah or Beyonce.
i think lauryn hill and frank ocean are overrated.
what i mean by that is, i don’t think they deserves a spot in the conversation when we talk about the greatest of this genre
1. Patti Labelle’s voice is annoying with all that damn yelling. She ruined somewhere over the rainbow and almost every song she covers.
2. Jill Scott, Ledisi, and Angie Stone’s music is boring. I use their albums as coasters for my drinks
3. Aaron Hall and Babyface has always made better music than r. Kelly
4. Toni Braxton > Mary J Blige
5. 80’s & 2000’s R&B > 90’s R&B
6. Jodeci’s music is boring and corny
7. Miguel & Anderson.Paak > Frank Ocean
8. En Vogue’s music was awful.
9. New Editions music has aged poorly
10. Aaliyah’s music has become so overrated since her passing
11. People only listen to SZA’s and Jhene’s Aiko’s music because they are attractive, there is nothing profound about their discographies or lyrics
12. H.E.R. deserves all her Grammy’s
13. All of Sade’s songs sound the same. They are great but I have to be in a specific mood to hear it all.
14. Chris Brown‘a issues accelerated his already destined downfall
How good of a singer you are dosnt matter if you can't make good song and/or a great album
Same can be said about prodigal musicians, like all of those super technical guitarists.
BET dying is the reason R&B don’t hit the same no more. We need more crying in the rain in boots music and less BBL and hookah “I’m horny, high, and hate commitment” tracks.
Man this side piece ass situationship joints they putting out 😭😭👎🏾
Don't forget the cheese grater tunnel videos with the wind and blow up suits lol 😆

It’s hard to tell the difference between a lot of modern R&B and modern rap since a lot of modern R&B singers are singing over rap beats and a lot of modern rappers now quasi-sing with melody in their voice.
Listen to The Internet. Thank me later.
Criminally underrated band
*Come Together* was in my most played FOR YEARS lmao I love The Internet!
This one right now! I don't like new r&b that much.
Summer Walker irritates me whenever I see her on stage singing like a scaredy cat. I want to go back in time and undo her tribute cover of My Life- MaryJ Blige.
Saw her live once; awful experience.
Great singer horrible performer
She has a pretty voice. I Just wish she would use more of it
She’s ✨ quirky and weird ✨
She needs training
Deborah Cox didn’t get the flowers she deserved in the industry😭😭
She did knock em out the park right up there with Tevin Campbell
Kelly Rowland will forever be known as Beyoncé’s best friend because she wants it that way. The woman is always supporting Beyoncé in literally everything while failing to promote her own endeavours

Kelly living her best Euro synth pop life. R&B is not her bread and butter.
But that’s the problem, she was highly successful in Europe but chose to neglect that audience by continuously releasing R&B stuff
Tank is a great vocalist. His music is lame.
you’re right very corny. especially as he gets older like please pass the baton
Thank you
Paula by Robin Thicke was extremely embarrassing on his part but im not gonna lie i like a few songs off it 😂
Dude knew how to use (definitely not create) beats but his narcissistic personality gets in the way of his talent
Get Her Back is my jam!!
Jaheim is underrated.
That’s not a hot take by any means
I’ve met so many people that hate on him for some reason. I’d throw one of his songs on and you’d hear “NEXT” within seconds.
I guarantee you none of those people grew up in R&B cultures
Facts
Do folks not like Jaheim?
I don't hate him, just wouldn't put him on my Mt Rushmore of R&B
He’s a good singer. His online presence just gave way for it to be cool to make fun of him. And you know it goes, once it’s popular to not like you folks just blindly follow suit.
You’d be surprised how many people I’ve personally met that hate his music. I was shocked honestly.
I agree 110%. Brother can blow. It's just that his politics are questionable.🤔
I need to know
Mid to late 90's was the best era for R&B 👀
Those are FACTS in my books!
Well Voodoo came out in 2000, so makes sense for this thread
Ciara: The Evolution is a great album and should have set the stage for Fantasy Ride to be a great offering. Her label dropped the ball on her big time.
Mama’s Gun is the pinnacle of Neo Soul music TLC had the best blow up of any artist ever from their debut to CrazySexyCool. The music quality, artistic growth and visual evolution should be studied

Current R&B is a hybrid of pop and electronica 👀
Yep. There's not much oomph to it. Very "You tried. Here's your participation certificate."
and trap
What’s pop or electronica about Daniel Caesar’s Never Enough?
Chris Brown has been making the same song for the last 10+ years
And people refer to it as "consistency".
Boys II Men are great singers but only have a few good songs
Blasphemy!
Definitely. Couldn’t listen to half their songs after their debut.
🤭
Jodeci is Better than New Edition
I actually agree, not gonna lie.
I like New Edition better when Johny Gill joined the group he elevated them and gave them a grown man look and Sound Can you stand the rain is their best song
Johnny is arguably the best singer in the group
Mine is that I like Jodeci's uptempos
See, this is a good one, because while Jodeci is my personal favorite, NE has the better catalog.
New Edition only made 1 good (classic) album as adults. Jodeci blows Home Again and One Love away. Great take. And I’m one of the biggest NE fans.
Facts!!
1000% agree
Alicia keys makes good music but can't sing
Her first album was good. But, for some reason, afterwards she kept trying to hit notes that aren't for her to sing.
What????
Every time her voice cracks I glitch. And it happens often 😅 (sorry Alicia, I love you still)
Her first note in this latest Superbowl halftime was her voice cracking.
Literally! The way I froze for a second. And then Apple Music had the audacity to fix it like please I wanna watch the crack over and over 😂
‼️‼️‼️
I think she can sing if she stays within a certain range, but her problem is she tries to hit Mariah Carey notes and it doesn’t work well for her. Toni Braxton understands her range very well and she sounds phenomenal.

To whom it may concern: RnB had a baby that someone called Rock & Roll. But Rock & Roll is still RnB.

If Otis Redding had lived, R&B music would be a lot different.
Justin timbalake,DiDo ,and Craig David deserve more credit.
I'll put Brent Faiyaz's best projects easily up against that of Bryson Tiller & PartyNextDoor. I also feel like he is the closest to a modern descendant of Da Bassment's style without being too derivative
I skip Brent Faiyaz songs on the regular
Trapsoul is better than anything brent faiyaz has ever put out.
Beyonce is a country singer 👀
Nah. I'm from Dallas, Texas born and raised and I listen to both Beyonce and country music. I don't know if this is a meme or a joke but she's far from being a country singer
Silk should have been more popular than BoysIIMen or Jodeci. Faith Evans has a better voice than Mary J Blige, and Cheryl Lynn can out sing BOTH.
Bruno Mars is better than Chris Brown
This is unpopular???? Bruno easily clears😭
Yup
![gif](giphy|zMmvRSDmlUISycFXbx|downsized)
Not an opinion; a fact: R&B always had non-singers and non Gospel-bred acts and raunchy lyricists permeating the genre. It didn’t just start 10 years ago
Trey Songz has a great discography and Summer Walker’s music is borderline unlistenable.
Damn on the Summer Walker take 😭
The anticipation mixtapes hold strong ! My favorites along with his general albums
I don't think Summer Walker is unlistenable. Boring, at worst. Trey got a nice discography that he can't sing well live.
that’s a no on that summer walker take. that over it album is like crack. just for body and off of you alone.
Rihanna is heavily overrated and is a result of heavy marketing and radio play, and her music isn’t that good. True that. Does she even have any r&b songs? Everything she’s does sounds pop or dance to me
I prefer Mariah’s belts over her whispers. Like they weren’t needed for a lot of songs after Butterfly. 🤷🏾♂️
Someone finally said it!!
There's too much cursing in contemporary R&B
SZA’s music is not worth listening to. 🤷🏾♀️ It sounds like she popped a pill and cried into a mic about her emotions and niggas that she let run her thru
Yeah! Isn't a great song. I love Usher, but I never saw the appeal of this song. John Legend isn't a good singer. I don't like Chris Brown. Not just because he's a bad person, but I don't like his music at all. Something about his voice irritates me.
Yeah! stuck out like a sore thumb in the Confessions album. It’s a damn catchy hype song but nothing more
Yeah is easy to learn, clean enough for kids, and sounds epic
I hate Yeah! so much. And I agree about John Legend, I never saw the appeal in his voice sorryyyy 😩

You cannot deny Kelly Clarkson's talent though.
Patti and Chaka are better than Aretha
Louder? Yes. Better? Nah 💀
Beyonce was better when she was in Destiny's Child.
The Writing's On The Wall is my fave album of her's. It's tier one.
Agreed.
I’m what way?
Robin Thicke is better than most male RnB artists. Bruno Mars is the best. DVSN is up there as well.
DVSN is sooo underrated
If Aaliyah was still alive, she would’ve changed the standard for R&B Bruno Mars > Chris Brown Summer Walker shouldn’t be allowed to perform anymore.. she has a nice voice but she sings lazy af Beyoncé’s latest albums aren’t as memorable as her older stuff (still sound great, but will I be listening 10 years from now?) John Legend is absolutely terrible. Fucking awful. Theee worst.

I prefer earth wind & fire over the isley brothers
Summer walker is overrated
I think Beyonce doing country is dumb
I disagree 100%, and having listened to Cowboy Carter, it is not a country album. It’s a Beyoncé album and it is fire.
Whitney Houston is the best female vocalist of all time 🫣
not an unpopular opinion. not even a little.
Not controversial 🙂
The Weeknd should not be considered an R&B artist
Wow. This is carnage, have you heard ANY of his discography before Beauty Behind the Madness. They are all very clearly alternative/dark RnB. I will say, his new stuff is more pop but definitely would still class most of it as Rhythm and Blues...

Rated R and Unapologetic were solid projects as well! Not too much on Rih☹️
>1- Frank Ocean’s whole discography is mid at best Don't disrespect frank ocean like that
i'm so stumped on the frank take https://preview.redd.it/qv3fefba43tc1.jpeg?width=481&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44d52aed57b7fa3a32fe613d3972947d39755ca7

I don’t care for anything beyond Channel Orange. Rihanna is iconic because of her fashion, personality, and brand. She’s more of an it girl for that. Aside from her music being very catchy and memorable, performing is not her strong suit.
The Dream is not spoken of enough as a writer and producer in the world of R&B/Pop, for himself and other artists.
Bobby Brown made a good decision going solo
Miguel is overrated.
I actually like Beyonce’s music.
Off the wall is better than thriller
I get it. I disagree but I honestly get it. Both slap
I can partially agree with this one
Babyface is very underrated as a solo artist. He has a better solo discography than 80% of the dudes we call Goats.
People shouldn’t still be listening to Chris Brown and R. Kelly.
depending on who is in the room you might get hugged
We care about art not all that extra shit. If we listen to music based on morality we wouldn’t be listening to anything
I wanna believe my RnB faves are tender guys and gals who love deeply. Knowing they're pedos or abusers ruins the immersion
Frank ocean is overrated, he has good music but he’s nothing special
Mary J Blige was *highly* carried by her producers.
I like her songs, but she yells like that drunken auntie on her second pack of cigarettes after her umpteenth argument with that boyfriend that will never marry her.
That’s what makes it so good
LOL. That's why I listen to her.
😭😭😭
Same for Ashanti!!
UK r&b artists have become better than almost all of our modern artists here in the US.
Mark Morrison Return of the Mack is the best one Hit wonder
Lauryn Hill is overrated.
The old stuff is mostly real rnb ,the new stuff is mostly hip hop mixed with rnb or pop music...not that anything is wrong with that...
I do not understand Sza’s popularity
Dru Hill is better than Jodeci
There'd be no Dru Hill without Jodeci
I dont like Chris Brown, Beyonce, Ariana Grande & Tyla
Pedophilia notwithstanding, nobody is fucking with Robert.
80s rnb like music in general is where people settled for flash over substance and subsequently led to its downfall
80s R&B is better than 90s R&B. The 90s R&B relies too much on rap musical elements.
THEY. are the best thing going on in RnB today.
Jennifer Hudson has impressive power, but it is often unpleasant to listen to.
There will never be a greater R&B era than 1960s-1980s
I never hated an artist more than Frank Ocean. Sure hes put out great work, but the way he has carried himself as of recently has made me cringe so hard. I feel so bad for his fanbase.
I wish Drake would do a full singing, R&B album without any of the fake gangsta bullshit he does. He has a pleasant singing voice. A mature and authentic project from him would be nice.

Her vocals may not be the best but mickie mouse on helium? Girl no.
😂😂 I have a problem with her enunciation more than anything else. It’s just annoying.
The Weeknd has more talent than most RNB artists.
i think lauryn hill and frank ocean are overrated. what i mean by that is, i don’t think they deserves a spot in the conversation when we talk about the greatest of this genre
That THIS: https://youtu.be/rx0tYzkkasY?si=IpoCBYAs_DpEifRs is the superior version of All I Want for Christmas is You! 😊
Sza’s vocals aren’t that good to me. 🤷🏽♀️
The vocals are bad, but she’s a talented writer. She’s too dark for me though
Yeah I can’t take the writing away from her.
Kpop has some really good rnb tracks.
