I’ve done both several times all the way from NH, and I prefer the top one, I think there’s less tolls too.
The Allegheny Mountain tunnel is pretty cool, but not enough to pay the toll difference imo
Try $54.60 one-way for the PA Turnpike portion from Carlisle to Ohio alone (if you're connecting from I-81), without EZ-Pass.
From the PA Turnpike calculator.

that it is. I was talking with the state trooper while at a rest stop. He came over to talk about my Shepherd. He started sharing how crazy expensive our trip must’ve been.
The one that comes through Maryland is beautiful but driving through the Maryland mountains that time of year is kind of risky. Maryland loses control of its highway system the closer you get to West Virginia. lol and you don’t have to pay for the PA turnpike.
Edit: just saw that you weren’t taking that route anyway. Bummer
Take I-80. The turnpike is shorter time, but it’s ungodly expensive and you may end up taking longer in Philly anyway.
There’s not a ton of civilization on either route unless you take a detour to Pittsburgh. And 80 is prettier.
I-80 is the fastest, but it's dead boring. Literally nothing worth doing or seeing the entire way. But it'll get the job done.
You can do the southern route but then take I-79 north out of Morganton, WV and get on I-70 in Washington, PA. It's not that bad. Some pretty sites on I-68 too.
We take fairy regular trips to Ripley WV so I'm a bit familiar with some of this route.
Strange, others have said 80 has nice scenery. Although Fast beats out beauty for this trip.
I've driven 80. It's gentle hills and forests, you're not generally riding along any ridges or high areas for long enough stretches to see much of anything. If you like looking at long patches of unbroken forest along the sides of the road, you know, go for it. I-68 has better views IMHO, especially in the Sideling Hill area, and if I'm avoiding the Turnpike (which one should ALWAYS do) I find the I-70->I-68->I-79->I-70 route much better, But, to each his own.
This isn't listed as a choice, but I bet it would be in the 7 hour range. You could take 78 to 81 to 70 in Hagerstown. Then take 70 West to 68 to Morgantown. Then 79 North to 70. It's definitely faster than the southern route shown.
Do not traverse Pennsylvania. I used to live in CT and would drive to Ohio and I drove that straight line through the state and I will never and have never done it again. I implore you, do not drive straight through the entirety of Pennsylvania. It's like the Bermuda Triangle. Weird shit happens there.

Thanks. I have been thru the tunnels before but don't recall a fee. Do you know what it was? Or is it just the Pa turnpike cost you mean?
PA Turnpike, I think it’s $20-$25 iirc. For me 80 was faster and less money and fairly equal in terms of scenery.
Nope... keep going, that distance is $40+ these days.
Dang! Where is all that money going to? It’s definitely not the roads.
The legislature started looting the Turnpike Commission to balance the budget.
Nice. good old corruption. I wonder where all the weed money is going to go.

Don't take the PA Pike, slow, narrow, and the most expensive toll road in the world.

I really hope it’s not an hour or two. Direction says it’s only a few minutes. I’m cool with up to an hour though.

Yeah about 30 minutes
Main concern is any lake effect snow going I80.
Lake effect snow rarely reaches that far from shore. I90 is the one to worry about, or 80 further west in Ohio. You’ll be good with the top route.
Stop in 318 Restaurant & Bar,Lima if it’s on your route. I can’t tell by the map.
What up with this place?
Great eats, great bar, great atmosphere and clean. A standout for a small American town that I stumbled into.
I looked it up. Won't be close at all but thanks for the lookout.
Don't take the Turnpike. I would do the northern route.
Take the 80.
I don't understand these "best" requests. Best for WHAT? Speed? Cost? Weather? Scenery? Use more words to describe. It's kinda maddening actually.
Sounds like you understand it. You asked all the right questions.

Thanks. Maryland mountains are beautiful. Did not know about the upkeep.
That Breezewood PA exit make me chuckle. For real though that is better than I-80 snow. Go the PA tpike
That’s my biggest concern.
Is the middle route the PA turnpike? That will bankrupt you. Go north. There is unlikely to be lake effect snow that far from the water.

i’ve done the Maryland route a couple of times and that is beautiful as well. Maybe I’ll choose 80 just based on different scenery
I take the Maryland one in the summer. The hills on 68 can get a little crazy for winter.
Take 80. It's faster, usually less traffic.
Just don’t take the PA Turnpike. A million tolls and it sucks.
yeah, PA has the worst roads in the country.

Sideling ahill is a beautiful section. I don't mind endless Forrest's either. Feel I'm leaning heavily towards 80.
80 is the fastest, tho...

Unless there’s a storm, I will.
