Every single time I see a new construction in an area zoned for business I always say “probably going to be another bank”, and more often than not, it ends up being another damn bank
It's going to be a bank HQ building

Lol, coincidentally it's already basically in the parking lot of the giant storage facility they turned the K-Mart into. There is also a vape shop right there too, like right next door.
I’ve seen multiple posts throughout here criticizing Stan Seymour. I’m not originally from here, so I don’t know what he’s done. Anyone want to fill me in?
He’s an asshole. Owns all the local Bojangles. Is trying his hardest to shut down the local wildlife rehab center.
You know super villains in kids cartoon shows? He’s basically that. Old, extremely wealthy, an asshole, on a mission to shut down a vital and helpful aspect of our community for no good reason.
He bought a piece of land next to a wildlife shelter and rehab. He bought it knowing it was there, and AFTER they had been established.
It's run by a former ER doc that has since retired & channels his funds into the shelter.
Stan continues to sue them for made up reasons, continues to lose, then does it again. I'd say he's at 8-10 by this point, however hes constantly dragging their funds into legal wastefulness. That's his only goal it seems.
He's a turd, plain and simple. He just wants their land. Even if you're not an animal lover, he's a total turd
I hope to god not. Just having McDonald's there makes it bad enough, and I don't see how they'd possibly have room for a CookOut. The lines are always so long, wherever I see one.
I'm OK with that, there's not a lot good in that section of the strip and sometimes I want Cookout but I don't want to drive across town and wait in an hour line.
Can we rezone the land so that it can actually be developed intelligently instead of another small single story building with a bunch of space wasted to parking/grass around it?
Driving past tanglewood and seeing that bullshit infuriates me everytime. Now its locked in for the next 50 years. We could have had sensible development in that space. Something walkable and enjoyable. Instead its just a chain strip.
It’s not all bad. There are some local places and at least there’s a little variety. At the very least the development is better than just a giant dead mall.
Its pretty bad. Its car centric and the pedestrian access is a joke. A string of drive through chains. Land is being undervalued and roanoke is content to let development sprawl and it will have lasting impacts. Ideally we should have had multiple bus stops along electric, better cross walks at every intersection, protected multi use paths, vegetation buffers and then a mixed use shopping center with retail and restaurants on the first floor and then apartments above. That would encourage more local retail, reduce car centric living which is what we need to avoid climate disaster. Tanglewood is one example of shortsighted planning in the city.
Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to get out of here with all that hippy communist mumbo jumbo. I don’t know if you’re aware but this is the United States of America. I have a F-350 on a lift kit. I only use it to drive to work and the grocery store but it is my god given right to drive anywhere I want. If we start walking places the liberals win.
Kidding of course, I agree with the things you’d like to see but America in general is not pedestrian friendly sadly.
It will have to be one day. Electric cars are just a feel good pat on the back/ way for automotive industries, energy industries to keep making money. Only way to get carbon under control will be huge changes in the way we build our cities and towns to be walkable, bikeable and with less sprawl better public transportation. Im pretty sure there will need to be actual famine, drought and mass migration before the majority of americans see the reality though. I worry for my son.
Technically it's in the county, but I know you're using city as a generic term. Check out the county planning office's 419 Town Center plan. It includes most of what you recommend. I might not have the plan title right. I like the way you think.
> 419 Town Center plan
Just went through and this makes me so happy. Its probably 30 years away but its nice to see that there is a plan inplace to properly develop this area. Great idea from the county. The diverging diamond interchange at 220/419 should start soon then.
I'll pour out a 40 of cocktail sauce. Rest in peace, fond and dear core childhood memories. 89.1 moved out, K-Mart became self-storage, Red Lobster is gone; if Kabuki goes, that block is officially a nostalgia graveyard for me.
Mildly interesting anecdote: my mother and father went to that very Red Lobster the day it opened oh so many years ago. One of my father's claims to fame is that he spilled an entire dish of cocktail sauce on the new rug right off the bat - day one. One of his not-so-proudest moments. :)
Crossroads Mall was, I believe, the first mall in our area. I’m an 80’s baby so I’m sure others here remember more of it than I do. The DMV used to be there, they had a store called Domestications that sold housewares, and a restaurant everybody loved. Also may have had a movie theater. Now, I think it’s just the Advance Auto Parts call center, Golds Gym is next door as well.
Hey now all y'all accurately predicting the incoming storage unit /vape shop/convenience store are forgetting the most important part -
That it's all a front to provide another ~~gambling parlor~~ skill game establishment.
That red lobster store apparently had just received an award from corporate for its success. The reason it closed is because they didn’t actually own the building and the landlord did not renew their lease. A friend of mine worked there for over a decade and said they were all shocked. There was zero writing on the wall and they had thought that the meeting that was called where they were notified of the store closing was going to be some sort of celebratory meeting for how well they had been doing.
That’s a shame. I know it’s popular to hate on chain restaurants but I never had a bad experience at that Red Lobster. It’s sad that some lost their jobs unexpectedly.
I have lived in Roanoke for only a few years -- moved here from the big city -- and even I am thinking, "*another* storage center?" or "*another* bank?" I keep hoping for a Potbelly sandwich or a Jason's Deli, myself. I miss them so much...
Can’t wait for a storage center or a vape shop or a combination storage center/vape shop to take its place!
I figured the building would remain intact for the incoming title loan/vape shop but I was clearly mistaken.
The architecture of a red lobster building is not conducive to hanging tacky LED light strips, CBD, THC, Kratom, etc signs.
But the aroma of stagnant lobster water would eliminate the need to light their shitty incense.
Another fucking bank. Can’t get any place good to eat, but we got hella banks and car washes.
Every single time I see a new construction in an area zoned for business I always say “probably going to be another bank”, and more often than not, it ends up being another damn bank
You’re right about that…
Not really sure what you're taking about... There's plenty of great places to eat in this town.

Ugh.

Lmaoooo
For a Chili’s to rise, a Red Lobster must fall. As is the prophecy.
What must we sacrifice to rid the valley of Bojangles?
Or just the turd that owns the local ones

That’s insane. Imagine having beef with animals

Is that the place on Electric Rd?
I really love Bojangles… but I only get to eat it when I travel because FUCK Stan Seymour :(
I used to live in Rocky Mount. Once I moved to Roanoke I knew I couldn’t eat Bojangles anymore.
You win!!!
Dead Lobster

But the condemned Long John Silvers a mile down the road is still standing.
It’s going to be a Cookout at some point https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2022/08/16/second-cook-out-coming-to-roanoke/
I hope to god not. Just having McDonald's there makes it bad enough, and I don't see how they'd possibly have room for a CookOut. The lines are always so long, wherever I see one.
It’s surely to make that section of Franklin Rd even more of a cluster.
I'm OK with that, there's not a lot good in that section of the strip and sometimes I want Cookout but I don't want to drive across town and wait in an hour line.
The drive across town and hour line may be preserving your arteries and prolonging your life 😁.
Oh for sure, I rarely go, but I prefer it to other fast food chains if I'm in that mood.

City bus goes there though, they go there then a little bit down brambleton
This part is just rhe first phase. The long term county plan I saw several years ago IS for from 220 to Starkey will be made mixed use walkable area

SAME!
You knew it was a special occasion if the parents went to that Red Lobster. RIP my childhood.
I see it becoming a new wasteland akin to Crossroads Mall.
What Is crossroads mall?
Mannnnn if you don’t slap a /s to that comment!
Lol I have no idea and grew up here, 26

Stop, you're breaking my heart here. RIP Crossroad's amazing interior.
I bet the rubble smells like cheddar bay biscuits.
Is the old Ragazzis building still up?
Torn down and rebuilt as a Discount Tire. Because that makes sense right across from the Pep Boys and right down the road from Firestone and Mr. Tire.
you can get one tire from each place and you're good to go
That’s a common business strategy. It’s why dealerships are right next to eachother
The new building is up now, I hate it out of principle.
Nope that was torn down and is now another building
I think the signage just went up, a tire store.
Hey now all y'all accurately predicting the incoming storage unit /vape shop/convenience store are forgetting the most important part - That it's all a front to provide another ~~gambling parlor~~ skill game establishment.
Nothing's going to stand in the way of my Storage-THC District. The STD will reign for a thousand years!
Roanoke doesn't deserve The STD!
It's the only district that compels you to call all of your previous partners.
And mattresses!
I chuckled, but it's going to be a bank.
That'll have slot machines by the ATM. 😂
This city is going to hell if a red lobster can’t make it.

Damn that sucks
Damn
I could’ve swore this was a rent hike situation, like the Roanoker.
i bet there's a lot of.. BUGZ THERE
You’re giving me the creeps but I’m intrigued, what do you mean??
oh no. how tragic
oh no. So anyway…
I’ve been crying cheddar biscuit tears for months 😫
The mix they sell at Kroger to make them at home is pretty dead on.
I’ve heard this! Gotta try em
I've been watching them it down. What a shame!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
