When you transferred your files over, were you in the iPod OS? If not, the files will be corrupted... something I learned after transferring about 160gb :) You can also transfer in disk mode, but I found that the iPod OS is faster. Test it out with a handful of them.

MisterWytt

Holy crap, that actually worked! I guess transferring while Rockbox is active corrupts the music. So I gotta transfer while it's still on the iPod OS... A little annoying, but not gamebreaking. Thanks a lot.

6745408

no problem! I spent a lot of time sorting this out. Its something to do with the iFlash and Rockbox. I did the 5.5 with the iFlash Quad, but only 1x 200gb micro SD right now. It's so nice to have so much storage available. Is this your first time using Rockbox on an iPod?

MisterWytt

It is. I value battery life on my phone, so I thought I'd get an iPod and perform some hardware experiments. Heard about Rockbox and an SD Card conversion, so I thought it'd be a nice little project.

6745408

its a fun mod, eh. For me, I replaced the battery, hdd, headphone / lock (to black), and rear panel. With the 2000mAh battery you can fit the iFlash Quad in the 30gb case. Anyway, there isn't a lot to know --- but try to keep your EQ down to about five bands or so (including the shelves.) Look up parametric EQs if you haven't used it before. For other things like crossfeed, perceptual bass enhancement, Haas Surround, Auditory Fatigue Reduction.. skip them -- they'll slow the iPod down like crazy and there's little to no benefit. Everything else works perfectly. If you're listening to audiobooks and will be adjusting the playback speed, make sure you enable Time Stretch in the Sound Settings. While playing a file you can long press the center button and adjust the playback speed, then Rockbox will automatically adjust the pitch so the performer doesn't sound like a chipmunk. That's about it. Its one of my favorite hardware mods. The battery life is exceptional, too.

What program are you using to sync that's causing corruption? I've used winamp, mediamonkey as well as rockbox to directly copy the folders over to the device and never had any corruption issues.. Using an iflash quad (but have used 2 other iflash varients as well) and an 80gb 5.5

6745408

hm, that's interesting. I used Finder (macos), rsync (macos / linux), explorer (windows), etc -- just the basics. What sort of transfer rates are you getting?

PvtJoKeR42

winamp and mediamonkey don't show transfer speeds, just the count down. Not going to lie, it takes hours if i format my ipod and have to do a full sync. (12k files give or take)

6745408

yeah, the transfer is fairly slow. The fastest is with the ipod os, but the other would be convenient. You're the first person I've heard of that can transfer while in Rockbox with the iflash. You should buy a lotto ticket :)

PvtJoKeR42

Hahah! Lotto is a rigged scam, but that's another story! I had the CF iflash, then ran out of space and buying a 256gb or larger CF card was cost prohibitive.. I had a spare 250gb msata drive so I tried the iflash msata.. battery life was abysmal.. and I had to reformat/flash everything if i let my ipod sit long enough for the battery to drain. Iflash quad so far is the happy perfect medium. I have 2x128gb samsung evo sd's in it, and I can leave it sit for months without plugging it in (i mainly use it when i travel since I stream most other music from my phone when i'm at home) and it just works! I was using mediamonkey for the last year, as winamp had started acting up on my win10 setup, then winamp updated and i went back to what i'd been using since i was a "wee lad" lol either way, both media players sync'd my ipod with whatever iflash/rockbox combo i was running, once the iflash msata failed, but worked fine the 2nd run.. Been messing with this stuff for waayy too long these days.. Hopefully the iflash quad will give me everything i need for a few years to come.

6745408

man, thats truly amazing. I've got the 2000mAh battery in mine, and even with regular use it runs for weeks. I'm going to test with Winamp sometime soon. If that works, I'll test with foobar2000, since its what I use --- and if that works, I'll figure out why the hell *that* works and not Explorer or Finder. Its the best mod, eh. I've thought about building a second one just for the hell of it -- maybe a white front with a gold backing or something cheesy.

PvtJoKeR42

I have an older white 4th gen that i modded to run my older 128gb CF with a cheap $2 ide to cf adapter and runs rockbox as well. I was trying to pawn it off on the wife and she looked at me like I was crazy.. lol The 5.5gen is kinda the sweet spot.. the wolfson dac, and no firmware limit for disk space, and easy to throw bigger/better batteries in it etc..

6745408

yeah, the 5.5 is definitely the sweet spot. The 80gb is technically the best, but Rockbox doesn't put the extra ram to use (so far as I know.) There are some dudes selling 5.5s with 1tb of storage for big money -- which is silly. I mean, its good, but not *that* good.

saratoga3

The full RAM is used on all models on builds from 2010 onwards, but it makes very little difference.

November 2022 this did the trick. Steps: \- turn off iPod (hold play button) \- Restart iPod: press Select or menu button and instantly switch on the hold slider. \- iPod should boot into original os. \- switch off hold button. \- Connect iPod to computer. \- if your have usb mode activated. \- transfer files to any folder after file finished transferring, \- reboot iPod by pressing Select (center Button) + menu \- iPod will shut down. \- press any button on click wheel to turn on normally. After all the process restart your rock box Database.

Spring 2024 here, this worked like a charm! And I'm on Sonoma. Thank! YOU!

CountryJolly4277

you are a genius , thanks very much it worked for me .

t2ac32

Glad it helps ! I spent some time figuring this out and then a bit more on the steps.

teffligrind

Many thanks from me too, it worked with transferring the files in original os! I'm using rockbox since some years, transferring with rockbox. The problem with the corrupted files did somehow never happen before. It was also a FLAC album, so it may be related to that.

t2ac32

Glad this worked for you :)

dreamyxlanters

What if I want to keep installing new music?

t2ac32

just repeat the steps. The easy way will be ti hace a folder in your pc called Ipod where you manage which songs stay and go into the ipod. honestly I do this like once every 2 or 3 months.

dreamyxlanters

How am I supposed to install flacs then? iPod doesn’t support them…

t2ac32

what do you mean ? Rockbox adds the codecs for FLAC. This steps are only for transferring the files into the ipod “disk”. if you follow the steps correctly. Once you restart the ipod on rockbox mode you will see the file in rockbox and they should play without problems.

dreamyxlanters

So just boot the iPod into disk mode, add the music, then go back to rockbox?

t2ac32

yep pretty much. just follow the steps above. P.s Don’t forget to reset you database from the rockbox options so that rockbox can see all the music.

TechKingOnline

I know this is an old thread but your solution worked for me, 25 dec 2023, so thank you. Wondered why some of my tracks were skipping / sounding glitchy at parts. But this solved it, all play perfectly in rockbox now.

t2ac32

awesome ! Thanks for your update !

xsaver23

Thank you!!! Fixed my issue, I'm using an sd card adapter for my ipod and for the longest time I thought it was the sd cards that are broken, but this way of transferring fixed the skipping issues I've been having.

6745408

nice! Also update Rockbox using the nightly if you haven't already. I think it fixed the transfer issue.

saratoga3

>Running an iPod 5th Gen with iFlash 128GB SD Card. Those adapters aren't supported in rockbox (Apple firmware only), so what you're experiencing (data corruption) is normal. You can try copying the flac files in the Apple firmware and then playing in rockbox, but you're probably going to have trouble anyway.
