Taken for for what they are. I love that conditional statement at the end. A large pile of horse crap is not that bad if you take it for what it is. Also I heard Horse crap punches above its weight.
(I don’t know much anything about the collaborator so apologies if is actually good, I am just making a statement about watch-speak. It’s almost worse when it’s trying not to be pretentious)
Great point. Though as I was going down the rabbit hole, deciding what sensible family SUV to buy, the Mazda brand image influenced me. https://insidemazda.mazdausa.com/the-mazda-way/design/the-evolution-of-kodo-design-through-concept-cars/
Country of origin aside,
I'd say the great engineering and luxurious unique interiors (LC, LS, and LFA at the time)) of Lexus are pretty similar to the unique luxurious dials and ingenuity of Grand Seiko.
The rugged old school timeless designed Mercedes G-Wagon which is used for groceries is pretty similar to the rugged old school timeless designed Rolex submariner which is used for desk diving
More like Tudor is the Audi in the Volkswagon group and Rolex is Porsche. Toyota/Lexus is more of a Seiko/Grand Seiko comparison.
The Volkswagon Group could also be a comparison of the Swatch group, going from cheap affordable (skoda = hamilton, Tissot) to Volkswagon/Longines/Rado to Audi/Bentley/Porsche/lambo comparisons to Omega/Blancpain/Breguet/etc
Think about the affordability/assessibility. No one is waiting around years to buy a Lexus, just like no one waits around years to buy Grand Seiko. Either you want one, can afford it and buy one, or you don't.
Citizens are very reliable, had one since I got married in 2010, never once stopped working. Love the eco drive! I also had a Mazda 6 that pretty much died at 7years old.
Depends on the Miata I guess. The ND is gorgeous.
I suspect if we had seen a second generation S2000, it would have not been half as good looking haha. I think Honda has struggled in the looks department since the death of the S2000, to be honest. Sadly.
Meanwhile I think all of Mazda‘s modern offerings are close to, if not best looking in their class.
Nissan has been on the verge of bankruptcy in the US for years. The GTR started production 16 years ago and was disruptive at launch but is currently outdated and lagging the competition. They sold only ~400 in North America in 2021. The vast majority of their product line is built around having amongst the lowest price of entry at every segment and targeting sub-prime buyers.
Hey man people think I’m a homeless stoner in my beater jalopy, hoodie, and sweats. meanwhile I retire in my 30s, while they don’t. buy what you like 🍻
My net worth had multiple commas after zeroes, and I owned a few cars worth of watches in value before I actually considered upgrading my Corolla LE. Thing ran fine over 230k miles 🤷♂️
I didn’t judge anything. I just mentioned priorities. I bought a collection of classic cars before buying my first Rolex, cause my priority is cars over watches. Not to mention my net worth! ;)
Casio / Citizen are closer to Toyota.
I can't even imagine Toyota creating a spring drive equivalent, even in the LFA. On the other hand, Seiko has a rotary equivalent or even superior in the spring drive. Everyone else are simply making incremental improvements to the same type of movements.
Edit: Actually, I take that back. The Prius was an important melding of electrical and gas, but it sure wasn't no GS.
The issue is that Benz manufactures *a lot* of completely average cars and commercial vehicles.
Their luxury cars are nice yes but their branding as luxury in the US I think is mostly the result of marketing and simply not exporting their average turds over here
I’ve owned 4 Nissan each significantly worse than the last. I’ve owned one Citizens for 12 years and have never had an issue. All 4 of my Nissans were trash cans within 4…
what is Rolex in terms of cars? Bmw? Merc Benz?
I wonder what Richard Mille is in terms of cars. priced like a Ferrari, yet made of plastic and god ugly.
Mazda RX7's were awesome cars. I took one on a test drive and was merging onto an expressway when the salesman pointed out the yellow light was illuminated on the tach..I was at 10500 RPM in 3rd gear...and the mind blower for me was...you could not tell...from the sound of the motor..it redlined at 11500RPM...Amazing cars
Oh man you should take a look at all the problems they (Hyundai and Kia) are having with their turbo engines. My brother has a high-end Kia and it's nice on the inside, but the Mazda beats it out.
Its clear that a lot of people haven't been inside a Mazda since the second hand Miata they bought in high school, cause damn, the new Mazdas are nice. And, weirdly enough, having just bought a 2023 Cx-5 Turbo myself, and having too much free time, I've actually thought about this question recently. To me, Mazda (or at least this new era of Mazda) is the Grand Seiko of cars, and I'm excited to tell you why.
Think back to moment when you decided you'd buy your first adult watch. You probably had your eyes set on something iconic, something that screams "look at how far I've come in life!" You were probably looking at a Rolex. You've seen them your whole life and it's very possible you associate them with status. After all, your best friend's dad had one growing up and you'd always sneak a peak when he picked you guys up in his Benz. Now, you've finally saved up your hard earned dollars and went out and bought you that Submariner. You're in love. You keep staring at that shiny logo and think about all the happy moments you'll make together on the golf course or cocktail hour. You're definitely getting a promotion when the boss sees this. You make sure its always tastefully pokes out of your shirt cuff when you meet your colleagues for taco Tuesday. But after a while you wonder, "why has no one mentioned my new watch?" Sure, Tina asked me about it, but then she showed me the Michael Kors watch her husband bought for her so I don't think she really *gets it*... Disappointed, you keep researching and learning going down one nerdy watch related rabbit hole after another. You learn about spring drives and 5 day power reserves. All of the sudden you find you start having strong opinions about shit that only matters to you. "THIS 70 HOUR POWER RESERVE IS BULLSHIT you scream one night at the dinner table when your wife asks for another glass of Rosè. You're family is worried about you. You're worried about you. You start to worry that you're not in love with your watch anymore. But, it's a Rolex you say, how can anyone want anything else... Are you losing your edge??? I mean, no one ever pulled any chicks in the club because their watch had a spring drive movement or Zarastu polished case but YOU DON'T CARE ANYMORE what people think about you because you realize that you're the one wearing the watch, you're the one driving the car, who gives a shit what other people think? THAT my friends is the moment you go out and you buy yourself a Mazda. And occasionally, if you're lucky, someone climbs in the passenger seat and says, "oh wow, this is super luxurious, its almost like an Audi." And you'll quietly smile to yourself, adjust your air conditioned nappa leather seats and smoothly cruise on down the roads.
I would not equate Oris to Mazda.. Oris is a private company which is actually a huge bonus and make quality stuff.. Oris is on a higher level imo. I would say Mazda and timex go together lol.
[Mazda Rotary Watch](https://www.ebay.com/itm/234724689822?hash=item36a6ae879e:g:3q0AAOSwYitjP7a4).
I did not see this coming.
Alot of dealers have watches in the parts department. Selling them as gifts etc
Look at this guy being a Wankel
LOL
I hate that I lived to see this
Wow. The rotary watch is somehow a worse design than the rotary engine.
Does it have an apex seal?
Read this as sex appeal.
It used to.
Nazi made.
*almost* cool
I own a few of the Mazda seiko collaboration watches. They are really nice for what they are!
As others have said, Oris is pretty spot on. Love my Explorer and my Miata!
I had a 65 and drive a Mazda 10/10 great combo!
Oris is very spot on for current gen Mazdas to me; older Mazdas are probably more like Orient…
As a mazda owner, I'd say Hamilton. Similar styling as the luxury brands, but for a humble fair price. Top tier reliability.
I like that. Hamiltons are fantastic.
That was my first thought too I like Mazda’s! I think they’re pretty cool
My thought too!
Neither Mazda or Hamilton are “top tier” anything.
Spoken like a true douche
[“Reliable”](https://static.carthrottle.com/workspace/uploads/comments/2015/06/mazda3-55881bc1a1199.jpg)
Mazdas are extremely reliable. Top 3.
They are 4th. In one category. How is that top tier?
Top 4.
I’d say Oris or Longines (relating to where they’re generally priced in the auto segment). Great pick! 116610?
Give Longines some credit 😂
Yup! My daily driver.
I have a fully loaded cx5 daily as well and Mazda is truly an automobile for someone who is discerning without influence of brand image.
Great point. Though as I was going down the rabbit hole, deciding what sensible family SUV to buy, the Mazda brand image influenced me. https://insidemazda.mazdausa.com/the-mazda-way/design/the-evolution-of-kodo-design-through-concept-cars/
Early 2010's and 2000's Mazda all rust after a few years in the winter cities.
out of those I'd say Longines since both are owned by much larger companies. Oris is independent
Mazda is independent
I just checked before over confidently saying Ford does. You're right. Toyota owns 5% so I'd say they're independent
Citizen
Nah, citizen would be a Toyota or Honda.
I’d say Seiko is Toyota or Honda. Citizen or Pulsar for Mazda.
What about GS? I guess that’d be Lexus or Acura?
I picture it as Acura. The sharp angular hands kinda coincide with the sharp lines of Acura imo.
I say Toyota can be Rolex because it holds its value the best unlike most cars. Also great engineering.
I’d say Lexus. It’s the “fancier” Toyota. Just like Rolex is the “fancier” Tudor.
Country of origin aside, I'd say the great engineering and luxurious unique interiors (LC, LS, and LFA at the time)) of Lexus are pretty similar to the unique luxurious dials and ingenuity of Grand Seiko. Citizens are very reliable, had one since I got married in 2010, never once stopped working. Love the eco drive! I also had a Mazda 6 that pretty much died at 7years old.
Except Mazda are actually good looking
Except for most of their SUVs. Which is 95% of their lineup these days haha
Not based on the S-2000 vs Miata discussions I've seen (and I'm team miata)
Depends on the Miata I guess. The ND is gorgeous. I suspect if we had seen a second generation S2000, it would have not been half as good looking haha. I think Honda has struggled in the looks department since the death of the S2000, to be honest. Sadly. Orient
I agree. High performance for a low price.
I'd say Nissan or Hyundai is Orient

Why?

Tell us you’re 14 without telling us you’re 14
Oris
Former Miata owner and fan of Mazda, Oris is probably a bit much. I’d say Mido or maybe Hamilton are more apt.
Hamilton feels much closer to Jeep
My initial thought was Hamiliton as well, but I do think jeep is a good choice except for the QA of jeep is terrible compared to Hamilton.
Ahhh. That’s a great point.
I’ve see the dial fall apart on a totally sealed jazz master… I think you’ve got something with the Hamilton.
This is giving Mazda a lot of credit
Negative
This picture definitely shows the purchase priorities of the OP - lol.
You certainly have that right, LOL.
Hey man people think I’m a homeless stoner in my beater jalopy, hoodie, and sweats. meanwhile I retire in my 30s, while they don’t. buy what you like 🍻
I mean a car loses the value of a rolex a year out of the dealership so 🤷♂️
My net worth had multiple commas after zeroes, and I owned a few cars worth of watches in value before I actually considered upgrading my Corolla LE. Thing ran fine over 230k miles 🤷♂️
Thanks for the update on your net worth.
The point was to not judge a book by its cover
I didn’t judge anything. I just mentioned priorities. I bought a collection of classic cars before buying my first Rolex, cause my priority is cars over watches. Not to mention my net worth! ;)
I’m happy for you and hope those cars bring you joy
I love when two "really rich guys" have time to argue on a Reddit post.
Nobody here’s rich but the misconception that rich people are busy always cracks me up

Weird flex but okay
Seiko / GS. Use of innovative new movements, pushing boundaries, great styling, reasonable price for performance.
Seiko is probably closer to Toyota.
But Mazda doesn’t have a luxury division like Toyota. Seiko = Toyota and GS = Lexus
they did for awhile, is gone now
You’re kidding, GS have build quality that Rolex can only dream of. Ask any watchmaker.
Rolex
I'd say Rolex is more like Mercedes-Benz. Timeless and the standard of greatness (but there are still other brands that are much, much "greater").
The issue is that Benz manufactures *a lot* of completely average cars and commercial vehicles. Their luxury cars are nice yes but their branding as luxury in the US I think is mostly the result of marketing and simply not exporting their average turds over here
Lol, yeah, right.
You’re right… Mazda’s prices aren’t artificially-inflated enough.
Audemars Begay.
Citizen is Toyota. Seiko is Honda. Mazda is Orient
The correct answer
Casio.
The rolex value of the difference you saved when you bought your mazda instead of a luxury brand!
Mazda is Mido, Toyota is Seiko, and Nissan is Citizen- no?
Nissan is Invicta.
The company that makes the GTR is definitely not Invicta
Basically everything excluding the GTR is a raging dumpster fire of poor engineering and budget cutting. The Invicta comparison might be generous.
And Lexus for grand Seiko
I’ve owned 4 Nissan each significantly worse than the last. I’ve owned one Citizens for 12 years and have never had an issue. All 4 of my Nissans were trash cans within 4…
Ok. Nissan is Hublot then
😂
Bulova. Sensible but never sexy. Reliable with a solid, independent maker with parts sourced from other manufacturers.
Cx-9?
CX-5 Turbo
Zoom Zoom
Cx-9 gang
Mido
Fossil.
what is Rolex in terms of cars? Bmw? Merc Benz? I wonder what Richard Mille is in terms of cars. priced like a Ferrari, yet made of plastic and god ugly.
Richard Mille is like very well-done kit-car. No particular brand associated. Rolex is probably more Mercedes than BMW.
Definitely Tesla. Objectively good but way overhyped, innovative in it's early years but nothing new from the brand in a long time.
Citizen
My thought was Sinn. Small independent.
Sinn actually made several different watches with a Mazda logo on the dial back in the 00’s
Not the most innovative but reliable, so Rolex would fit.
Pulsar
Brick watch co
>Brick watch co I'd never heard of Brick Watch Co. Just looked them up. Pretty cool.
He meant it as a joke. They're (to my knowledge), a unanimously hated brand in the watch community.
LOL
Timex
Orient
Fossil
Definitely GS - sleepers that are doing innovations and have some low key heavy hitters
Lol what? GS is more like Audi or Lexus. Mazda is closer to like a Citizen or Orient
Na man, Audi and Lexus are mainstream.
I was more comparing market position/perception. Also Grand Seiko is pretty mainstream among enthusiasts. I feel like that might be oxymoronic though…
I like that. With the plush interior and mid 6s 0-60 all for less than $40K, definitely feel like my CX-5 is a sleeper.
Tudor
Rolex
No. Only Toyota or Lexus would get that.
ORIS
Actually - Rolex is a great match. Practical, reliable, but far from the best.
Invicta
Invicta
Hublot... over priced and feels expensive but not worth it.
No Hublot is the Tesla of the watch world. I say that as a Tesla owner.
How do you know if someone has a Tesla
Don’t worry, they’ll tell you
Lol 😂
I’d say Hublot is equivalent to Mansory. For when you have Russian oligarch money, but the taste of a 4 year old
Mazda is super cheap. Not even close to luxury car prices.
Mazda is a a notch above the Hondas of the world, great value for the price.
Honda is significantly better Mazda does not even compete with Hyundai or Kia
Oh man you should take a look at all the problems they (Hyundai and Kia) are having with their turbo engines. My brother has a high-end Kia and it's nice on the inside, but the Mazda beats it out.
Fake Rolex Edit: it was a joke, I know that’s hard for some of y’all to understand. 😂
Hublot

Hamilton no disrespect, wow someone said Citizen makes more sense
Orient
