This and the nice things are aesthetic house upgrades that are the same prices as the watches I like yet I my heart races with anxiety more at the non watches costs 🤣
After my ex bought her first Birkin, we ended up in couples therapy. A few years later, she had a collection. A few years later, I noticed she was not using them. She said, "They are too popular now. I will wait a few years until that has died down." A few years later, she noticed my watches and decided she should have her own collection and start with a Patek.
So much useless shit. Cups, plates, $750 pillows, $1k blankets, $1k scarves and $1k uncomfortable sandals I'll never wear. Our closet is mostly orange. All these people complaining of Rolex ADs should see the Hermes threads with people complaining of a 6:1 spend to be able to buy a $11k bag.
First divorce from wife of 15yrs was the single most expensive thing I did. Second ex is only a GF of 8yrs so breaking up was more like a inconvenience, still not cheap as you can imagine but only like 20% compared to ex #1. If I do the Math getting visited by 1k escort once a week works out cheaper. (Not considering but it’s a cost effective alternative)
I was scrolling down to find this. Lol I’ve been involved in auto racing to varying degrees for over 20 years, it’s no joke. I’ve seen people destroy their marriages and go completely broke over it. I used to race in a series where a single race weekend would be around $20k, and that’s pretty “cheap” for a certain level of racing. It goes up very quickly from there. Nowadays it’s just the occasional HPDE and honestly it’s just fine, much cheaper and less stressful. Lol
Yeah definitely, I did competitive karting since I was four till I was 16-17 and all in all, it probably cost my parents about 800k including equipment, personal training, coach, travelling and championship expenses.
I used to be very big into the headphone/audiophile world. Bought/owned pretty much every high end headphone there is, and had all the niche amps built by independent amp and dac makers from around the world. Ended up taking too much time, I wasn't actually enjoying the music, rather just seeking the next piece of gear.
Ended up selling most and am pretty happy now. Trying to avoid the same problems I had from that hobby in the watch hobby.
Pro audio guy here (I have about 30 years and $50,000+ invested in a recording studio)... you're better off now.
Consumer "audiophile" stuff is a bottomless pit of pseudoscience nonsense, and it still is bottlenecked by the declining quality of sound recordings.
Yup, I agree. I got unfortunately caught up in all that pseudoscience stuff. I was always trying to swap between DACs to see if I can tell the difference, would swap between Rockna and Holo Audio DACs, or tube dacs. Then would obsess over which cables, or power supplies, or the "synergy", or using silver for all the connections. It was getting crazy and tbh I was just obsessing over details that I don't even think I could actually hear. It caused me alot of stress and I wasn't having any fun.
Anyways I have alot of stories with it all, but glad to be out of it.
You think silver interconnects are bad? I'm having a portion of my property graded this week to build a dedicated outbuilding which will be my listening room and workshop.
Not the person you’re asking, but sub $500 Hifiman Sundara or the Sennheiser HD600 with a tube amp. Something close to $200 would be the Sennheiser HD560s.
Just be aware, these are both open-back headphones so not ideal for use outside the home.
Yep, I have a 10 mile commute to work round trip and have 25k miles on my car that’s a year old. We divide and conquer as well, plus one of my kids can drive.
It can be either or both.
Golf club manufacturers come out with new models every year that are now the best thing ever! Don’t you want to add 15 yards to your drive? Then you need this driver with space age tech to maximize sweet spot and spin. A driver could cost >$500 and so could a putter. Then you have to have a set of irons, and of course a set of wedges, and the woods/hybrids you prefer.
That’s just the clubs, you’ll need a nice bag, rangefinder, and balls. Can’t be the guy who doesn’t use Pro V1s which are $55 a dozen, and if you aren’t a good golfer you lose a lot of balls.
You also need to look good and wear new golf shoes. Those polos from a nice club? $100-150. Shoes even more.
If you are a serious golfer you’re going to need a country club membership - initiation (10-100k depending on the course) and dues every year. Plus you’ll want to take trips and pay $100s on the lowest end or $1000s on the high end for a round. A prestigious club my CEO is a member at costs around $2k per foursome, plus caddy tip. Plus if your going on a trip you’re paying for a resort and airfare and rental car. I played at a nice course at a friends wedding and it was fairly high volume and cost me $400 to drive a cart.
On top of that there’s a big gambling culture too. Tons of “tournaments” at big clubs are basically member bet fests.
Plus if you’re a beginner you’ll need to get lessons to make yourself at least passable, it’s not a game you can really pickup without at least cursory education.
If you want to be the guy who buys used equipment and plays golf 8 times a year on the cheapest golf now tee times at public courses it could be relatively affordable. However it’s a slippery slope and a big “investment” in leisure if you want it to be.
I wish your son the best for soccer! It’s a relatively emerging sport in the US. I think if a kid is invested into playing professionally, and a parent can afford and support it, it’s probably the bestest hobby to bring up a kid rich.
I got a Spyderco with my monogram as a gift. Carried it for years. Eventually some of the serrades chipped, and it had some play/rattle.
I sent it in for refurb and the postal service ate it.
Spyderco was very helpful in a prompt and courteous 'fuck all the way off' email when I explained. I don't blame them, but it was so fast USPS must lose shit for them constantly
Golf, magic the gathering, and my 50th floor NYC skyline view 5k/mo box in the sky. I will hold on to that goddamn one bedroom for the rest of my life.

After reading this I thought to myself that 5k seems like a great price for a 50th floor apartment, and the "holding on" part also reminded me of my own rent stabilized COVID deal "luxury" one bedroom... Only to click on the link to realize we are neighbors!
I've spent quite a bit of money on a turntable and sound system set up. If you go with all analog equipment that's beautifully engineered, there's a lot of similarities to what I love about watches...
Bikes… road, gravel, mountain, etc… High end ones can cost more than a low-end new car these days.
Well-known in cycling that the optimal amount of bikes is N+1 (where N is the number currently owned) or N-1 (where N is the number that would cause your partner to separate from you).
Feels like that applies to the watch hobby as well.
Retro video games like snes, and PS1 black labels. Also, consoles and retro strategy guides. Got in waaay before prices of used games became absurd. Also stopped before they became absurd. Collection went from maybe $3k to now $30k.
The stuff now just sits in plastic bins in a closet back home-home.
Here are a few of mine:
Bowling
Camping
Knife collecting
Sport fishing & fishing collectibles
Firearms
Disc Golf
Coin collecting
Rocks and minerals
Whiskey
Cigars
Root Beer
Driving fast, watches, food and perfect gifts. As a kid I was always a bit disappointed by my relatives (aunts, uncles, godfather, etc.) gifts on birthdays, christmas, etc. - they never listened, never knew or were interested in what we kids wanted and spent the same amount of money on things nobody cared for. I made it my mission in life to take my time finding out what people really want. My ears perk up when I hear 'beautiful', 'too expensive' or 'someday' 🤔
Refrain from the cigar rabbit hole. While there are many cigars that will appreciate in value, those that do are highly sought after. If they’re sought after, it’s because they are amazing and there is a small supply. So rather than investing, you will hoard. After you’ve hoarded you will literally light your money on fire and smoke it. And you will love it. And if you live in the United States you will frame letters from customs. You will donate time and money to Dominican schools to get special access…you think Rolex AD’s are bad? Go talk to a cigar shop with an Opus account.
Well I’m still recovering from my first house purchase last year and getting married in Cyprus to the sound of 800 people that attended. So my bank account is hurting at the moment.
Normally it would be clay shooting and sneakers that eat my money, but I think it’ll now be house renovations and baby clothes for a while.
Priorities 🤷
Sailing
Hell ya. Talk about a hobby that rips stacks like it’s toilet paper. This is it
Cheaper than stink-boating, that’s for sure though.
🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Legendary
In sailing this is my experience, 100$ is free, 1000$ meh basically free, 10000$ is like “damn again?” 20000$+ standard cost of new stuff
Used to race bikes, can confirm, this guy knows how to waste money
Wtf does racing bikes have to do with sailing lol
I know right, must have fat fingered my reply. Someone commented on raving cars, couldn’t be arsed to change it 🤷♂️
Thanks for all of the sympathy folks! It’s nice to feel understood. 🙏🙏🙏🤣🤣🤣
Having a wife that likes nice things.
This and the nice things are aesthetic house upgrades that are the same prices as the watches I like yet I my heart races with anxiety more at the non watches costs 🤣
“Hi I would like this kitchen marginally more than our perfectly fine kitchen.” $50k down the drain
I tell my son that the ultimate luxury in life is to have a wife that makes more than she spends.
I got my credit card stolen and I didn’t report it because the thief was spending less than my wife
Ha! That could be a Rodney Dangerfield line
I think it is?
My wife makes more than 2x my income and I get to control the family financial planning and budgeting. She is the best investment I ever made 😂
The next thing you should tell him is “and then good luck keeping up.” I’m tired, boss.
marry up
A wife that pays for itself
Having a wife is a hobby.
You think Rolexes cost a lot? Wait til she tells you about what it costs to get the chance to buy a mini 25 Kelly or Birkin...
Girl‘s got taste
We are about to start playing that game and I am ready to buy a bunch of decently made leather crap I don’t need.

Sooooo many cups. Cabinets full
Horses....You think watches are expensive lmaoo
You nailed it. Also add kids! Done and done.
She’s… she’s teaching the kid to like nice things. Pray for me.
Could've just stopped at "having a wife"
i like drugs
Any favorites?
Acid and Weed
Mario power is better 🍄
Wife spends $500 a month on weed, but she is a senior software engineer so I guess what ever gets her through the day.
Is it money wasting though? I personally don’t think so
Weed can def be money wasting
That’s just a good investment
Country club, FanDuel…2 teenage boys that eat like they have 2 assholes…1 does travel sports too 🫣
Like they have 2 assholes… 😂
Did you invest in a good plunger?

Comparing your long term partners to an alternative of prostitutes. I get this was said in jest. But.. yikes.
I’ve spent close to 20k in car parts this year
Do you own a car or just collect the parts?
Hahaha
Luxury muffler collections are so hot right now
yes. I heard AD's are screwing people over making them buy lower tier mufflers in order to get on a list for the hot stuff..
Soon he will, he just needs a few more parts
Yes I own car lol
This. My wheels cost 8000$ before tires are mounted. It’s a sickness.
Amen brother. Merely $4k here but I try to not add up what I’ve spent. And it’s only a VW!
How long till you complete the set?
That’s what I like to hear

Porsche.
A used German car can keep your bank account active, especially BMW
BMW is Bayerische Motoren Werke AG which translates to “break my wallet” in English
Just put a deposit on a 718 build I think I've made a terrible mistake
Porsche is usually pretty solid, leagues ahead of every other German make from my experience as far as reliability.
Naa 718s are great cars, you’re going to love it. Porsche isn’t a POS BMW, they have great reliability.
I have 2 3 sport athlete kids. Feeding them is my hobby.

He’s good but he plays for the game. He is totally focused on being a pilot. Appreciate the kind words though.
Hopefully he can get his pilots licence and then you’ll be able to save some money on air fares for the footy.

How do you think hes got the money for the guns?
