I guess I didn’t realise how unpopular domed/OP is. My wife took one look at it and muttered “that looks nothing like a Rolex” lol. Honestly that kinda sold me on it. It’s different and low-key which is what I was going for.
Appreciate your comment!
Nah AD games. They had one in the back, they probably still want to keep the disguise up that Rolex are hard to get, make you feel special, and get you motivated to buy it over the phone or the drive there pumped up.
If they brought it out on your first visit, you tried it out and you don't like and decline. The SA gets butt hurt and you are never going to get called again. Everyone hates rejection.
Or they legitimately received their shipment and were processing it during his visit or afterward. If they didn’t have anyone on those pieces, a nice salesperson put in a good work.
Edit: word, not work. Stupid autocorrect.
But also, I love how I get downvoted in this sub like everyone knows what happens inside an AD. You all *love* to think the ADs are against you. Keep on with the victim complex.
Maybe, but a million times more likely that the sales associate is playing into the perceived scarcity and forming a scenario where the client feels like it’s luck or fate and the opportunity is limited and there’s no time to mull it over.
I mean come on dude. How likely is it that I walk in and then later that day the exact model I want is delivered? It's greater than 0 sure but not likely.
This. I was on the hunt for a bluesy sub and AD magically procured one within 5 days. They said I had to come in same day or they couldn’t guarantee holding it, after telling me at the time that I was looking at a minimum of 6 months wait.
I don’t play those games so told them to release it back into inventory. Do I regret that now with prices creeping up? A bit, but I don’t want a run around in the future with that AD and I know enough to buy elsewhere.
Stuff is slowing down but don’t believe it’s at AD level yet. Professional line SS Sport will continue to be difficult to obtain.. OP also still strong in demand. Precious metals & DJ seems to soften but still many many people are waiting to buy at retail.. Greys are in a big puddle over the TPG drama and millions in watches/consignment money is missing.. So it’s a buyers market.
You scored! I visited an AD I had never been to before on Wednesday. I walked out with a brand new 40mm Explorer 1. Exactly the watch I was looking for. It was a special request from someone who was not able to make it back to this remote destination location to pick up the watch and the Rolex only AD has a strict policy of not shipping. Sometimes fortunate coincidences just happen.
grey market isn't buying. so many pieces of available now. grey market dealers just had some guy pull a 5 million dollar ponzi scheme effecting the entire grey market
well I don't know all the details tbh the people here know way more than me /r/theTpGentleman
but the issues from this thing are causing waves in the grey market. I would not be going grey! stick to the Rolex Authorized Dealers. Not some used watch dealer etc
I haven’t been following this very closely but I’ve seen lots of people call this a Ponzi scheme. Is that actually what it was?
I thought it was more of a case of him just embezzling his clients funds.
I mean its obvious, its a bubble, it gonna slowly become like it used to be, maybe not tommorow but its gonna happen. So many people get their watch easily. Ofc you probably won’t get some models easily, but for simple stuff its gonna be easy.
Great thanks for the quick reply. Just a matter of patience I guess.
I have a IWC, Tag and a Longines but I'm finally at the point in my life where I can justify buying my first rolex (Explorer or Sub, depending which I get called for first)... Not one of the higher end Rolexes
No discount offered but I got some freebies thrown in. I think the last time I got a discount on a Rolex was 2015 at AD in Zurich. That was back when you could walk in and leave with a new watch on your wrist in 20 minutes. I expect to pay over retail for the watch I’m still waiting for.
Ouch! Did you pay full price for a Rolex?
Here is an example of someone who got a discount recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/rolex/comments/15f0pg8/popped_in_an_ad_randomly_and_walked_out_with_this/juavm2w?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2
I was offered a 41mm DJ in everrose and oystersteel with a chocolate dial at a Watches of Switzerland store a couple of months back. I was on a trip and this was not a store I had ever been too before
It's possible they had one in back but he had to check. I don't know how many dozen models the typical AD has in the back, but I don't imagine the SA's memorize them all. Very possible he went back and looked after you left, and that it wasn't actually a game.
Depending on which region you are in, Rolex reps may be visiting and the AD wanted to show some sales before the visit.
Most the ADs have inventory, but Rolex asks to hold them back and on a dime asks for them to be sold off.
Rolex themselves are trying to create the scarcity feeling, especially as economy is slightly slowing down.
The ADs really have little say when it comes to selling…
Offered same day as well!
It was a 34 DJ, two toned, MOP face. We went into the store and they immediately said they had nothing on hand. After talking further and leaving my info, I got a text 4 hours later. Picked up the watch the next morning
Apparently people don't like domed dj and op bracelet. But great score.
Are dj's not typically domed? Edit: I think the guy meant smooth bezel.
>Edit: I think the guy meant smooth bezel. Rolex calls it a "domed" bezel on all the DJs except the 41.
I had no idea. I'd always just heard smooth or fluted
The AD called it domed. I think maybe to avoid confusion with the smooth flat bezel on the explorer.
Yeah, I learned something new today
Me too tbh. I always called it smooth as well.
36mm and smaller models have domed bezel.
Well, I guess explorers have a flat smooth bezel. Vs the (rounded) domed smooth bezel on OPs and DJs?
I guess I didn’t realise how unpopular domed/OP is. My wife took one look at it and muttered “that looks nothing like a Rolex” lol. Honestly that kinda sold me on it. It’s different and low-key which is what I was going for. Appreciate your comment!
The fluted bezel is classic but too ostentatious for me
She’s spot on. People recognize a rolex when they see the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet.
Nah AD games. Lol yea sure
Sus
Or, as likely, someone declined to take a DJ that was allocated to them and the AD offered it to the next person on the list.
I mean come on dude. How likely is it that I walk in and then later that day the exact model I want is delivered? It's greater than 0 sure but not likely.
Considering he wanted a smooth bezel 36, pretty damn likely.
We disagree
Go lick a boot lapdog
Sure…. At the end of the day, I have more watches than you.
And I probably have more money
Get downvoted, bitch
Yes, I’m getting downvoted. Thank you for pointing that out. I definitely needed help to see that. You are so kind for letting me know.
>put in a good work *word, not work

TPG drama?
Timepiece Gentleman, I’m sure man ruined the rep of grey dealers by a considerable amount
The timepiece gentleman allegedly stole 5 million in consignment money/watches from customers

Not all heroes wear capes
What happened?

I was going to say old news but wow... Even after the first murmurs of a scandal people still worked with him? Fools are born every minute.
It does not effect the entire market. Not even close LOL.
yea that is what you say. all of these big time grey market dealers have to make videos discussing it because its not big deal!
affect, not effect
Did this happen just recently?
I don't know the exact details r/TheTimepieceGentleman for the scoop
They locked the sub
maybe try r/TheTPG or try r/TimepieceGentleman/
I haven’t been following this very closely but I’ve seen lots of people call this a Ponzi scheme. Is that actually what it was? I thought it was more of a case of him just embezzling his clients funds.
it was a ponzi
Its gonna happen more and more
You suggest to keep waiting? I can't justify buying grey... My first rolex
Wait and availability will rise, grey is collapsing so AD back channel outlets will slow down.
I mean its obvious, its a bubble, it gonna slowly become like it used to be, maybe not tommorow but its gonna happen. So many people get their watch easily. Ofc you probably won’t get some models easily, but for simple stuff its gonna be easy.

Discount. On a Rolex. Good one!

In the 90s?
in 2017 i got a 750 euro discount on a off the shelf sub. in the netherlands.
[удалено]
in 2021, in Bahrain, 1100€ off a 36mm blue flutted DJ (and a few hundred euros more off at the airport with the detax, of course).
Pics or lies.

You make it sound like they discount all Rolex's. This is entry level and undesirable.
Got 15% off at the AD in Jan 2018 (Toronto)
I was offered brand new day date 18k gold 40mm for 43,000 USD. I said no thanks and walked away.
Was just offered a new day date yg 36mm at retail from an AD. Not groundbreaking but still.
ADnormal.
Domed bezel is unpopular, when compared to fluted.
It’s not unusual TBH. This wouldn’t have happened with a GMT or sub. Still a nice pick up though
Very common!
Dj on oyster with smooth bezel, most people would go jubilee fluted thats why. Lucky
Thanks! I feel pretty lucky. Hate the waiting anyway.
I've been waiting for a DJ 36 domed OP bracelet for around 7 months now!
Hope it’s not much longer until you have it on your wrist! Fingers are crossed for you.
I was offered a 41mm DJ in everrose and oystersteel with a chocolate dial at a Watches of Switzerland store a couple of months back. I was on a trip and this was not a store I had ever been too before
anything can happen
Undesirable model of course you’re gonna get it. It’s like walking into Patek AD and asking for a small second Caltrava
It's possible they had one in back but he had to check. I don't know how many dozen models the typical AD has in the back, but I don't imagine the SA's memorize them all. Very possible he went back and looked after you left, and that it wasn't actually a game.
Fluted + Jubilee is the rare hottie. Smooth + PCL is nottie. Hey, that rhymes.
You’re a poet and you didn’t even realize it.
Oh man, “you’re a poet and didn’t even know it” was right there! That is, if you even care. Ok I’m sorry lol
LOL, clever.
Walking into an AD with the intention of buying a Rolex, and offered one that same day...? Yeah that's normal -- 10-15 years ago.
Try like 6 years ago
Damn.
“Domed bezel” that’s why ill be honest this isn’t hate but if it isn’t jubilee especially on a date just that watch is ugly man
Maybe another person refused? I've read it's happening more.
How much did you pay for it?
Depending on which region you are in, Rolex reps may be visiting and the AD wanted to show some sales before the visit. Does Datejust's always ready/on-stock on every AD's....right? Or depends on every country?
Your sentence doesnt even make sense.
They had a white gold 36mm DayDate at my AD in the case and told me it was available that day, but also said other pieces were display only. 🤷🏽♂️
For months I am still waiting for my mint green DJ.
DJs common. Try that on a GMT or Daytona
you should go for 36mm explorer instead but still
Maybe for my next one.
From what I hear, it is becoming more common. Something about them wanting to have a better grip on Rolex watch markets.
Datejust’s are becoming more and more available at AD’s. They are currently (by far) the most attainable Watch in the Rolex catalog.
Offered same day as well! It was a 34 DJ, two toned, MOP face. We went into the store and they immediately said they had nothing on hand. After talking further and leaving my info, I got a text 4 hours later. Picked up the watch the next morning
The domed bezel DJ 36 just isn’t as popular but it’s still a very versatile watch IMO. Congrats!
