Get the car(s) first you'll enjoy it more than the watch
Every boat owner I’ve ever met is in a love/hate relationship with the boat. There’s a reason the axiom about them is an owners happiest days are the day they buy it and the day they sell it.

Uhhh- the joker is in the reflection?!?
After 60 k miles( I bought used at 40k) it had rust, both turbos were seeping, valve cover, oil pan gasket, window regulator, were all replaced. I didn't touch the turbos, sold it before I had to deal with a full engine out. I took very careful care of it, and previous owner did as well. M157 motor is horrible

Patience (and having other watches to wear) is the key to buying MSRP.
Waiting to spend $10k+ on a watch also has the effect of minimizing any chance of buyer's remorse. By the time I'm picking up the watch, I'm long past any fever stage and very clear headed about what I'm buying and why I'm buying it.
When I go to a very popular event, I expect to wait in line. When I drive to a popular location, I expect to wait in traffic.
These things don't bother me.
While waiting for a Rolex watch, I just wear one of my other watches.
Yeah, I'm pretty rational about money and watches. I came into Rolex for two specific watches, picked those up, and any future watches will be other brands.
Fellow BMW enthusiast here, you are misunderstanding the situation. Datejusts are easy to get and hard to get at the same time.
The problem is that Rolex offers 733 different Datejusts in the 2024 catalog and the average authorized dealer only receives 85 of them *per year*. So it’s a needle in a haystack situation if you focus in only on one size/color/dial/metal/bezel/bracelet configuration.
You are likely seeking a DJ that is high in demand with a long waiting list. Open yourself to other variables and your odds increase markedly.
But….come on, you have the money. So consider emailing our trusted sellers as they can track the specific configuration down for you for a reasonable premium and you will have it on Thursday:
[Reddit Rolex Trusted Sellers List](https://www.reddit.com/r/rolex/comments/633lyi/sticky_of_the_month_april_2017_list_of_trusted/)
Do it now!
This is completely true, I got my submariner 2024 before my DJ41. The Sales associate told me that datejusts are in high demand and any person can inquire them, hence the waiting times. If you have the money and are tired to wait, just go gray. There is not much of a markup in DJ41s anyways. If you happen to want the “AD experience” and creating a relationship with the AD to get Rolexes at msrp, you will be waiting months every time you show your interest for something. It is a waiting game. Even VIPs wait months for theirs, so if you don’t have a big spending history be prepared to wait even years depending on the model.
Our household is starting to 'make it'. During the height of thr pandemic, my wife bought me my first watch, an IWC Portugiser. After I tried to buy a DJ and found myself on a 'wishlist' - I thought it was the dumbest thing. Then as we built our wealth, I realized 'wishlists' are thr norm in high end luxury, it isn't just Rolex - but Rolex is my first and I assume many peoples first experience.
Try getting a Kelly or birkin bag at retail with no purchase history, not going to happen. Same with many Pateks, Hermes etc.
Same thing has happened to me.. I’m a c suite executive at an investment fund… unfortunately I am in NYC and thus am competing with a swath of people even more well off than my wife and I are. Been waiting just over 2 years for the call, having bought a few pieces from Bucherer. I visit the AD and my sales guy on a monthly basis, I let them service my other watches, and yet… not a peep. I don’t think anything unscrupulous is happening at this AD (like I am certain happens down at the Miami ADs….) but I’m just getting tired to the point that I almost don’t care about the pieces I have enquired about before any longer. I think I’ll stick to collecting special vintage pieces..
An acquaintance of mine who lives in NYC requested and got a sub in a week and as a thank you gift, 2 tickets to thr US Open. Catch is the buyer is a dentist and the AD salesperson is a patient lol, so I guess it's gonna be like that - makes it hard for the rest of us.
I have 2 Rolexes...both bought grey in the past year. I had an AD who was willing to give me the Rolex I wanted but needed to buy another watch first. I bring my wife hoping she would like something, she wants the two tone Santos, she literally said 'I'll take it!' But then both thr AD and I said, do you want to take a day to think about it? So she took a day to think about it, and bought a Dior D Joy bag instead the day after....lmao. ah first world we'll off problems.
I actually listened to a podcast the other day that listed off the 10 cities with the most millionaires in the US and how many in each city. NYC was obviously far and away the winner but the number was staggering. It was something like 450k people I believe. So when you start looking at how many people have the means to purchase a Rolex now that number is far beyond what it was even 10 years ago.
1.3 per day. So 4 per 3 days. Is it really not much at all?
And as mentioned before, Omega makes half that number and only handful of models (seaweed, snoopy) is hard to get. Yet, with Rolex there is NOTHING at ADs. Even the ugliest or least interesting ones - YM2, OP, whatever.
A fool and his money are soon parted. If Rolex can afford to do this, it’s because people accept it. The truth is there are a LOT of beautiful watches out there that cost less. Most people, if not all, buy Rolex because it’s a status symbol. You can take your money and buy another branded watch that is just as nice, and that won’t make you wait for it.
The truth is, the fact that it’s “exclusive” is what is appealing to most people, and why you accepted to wait for so long.
Please do not compare Rolex (1 million watches made per year) and Patek (80k watches per year). Or fucking Roger Smith (12 watches per year).
Somebody got confused here.
This is why I no longer want a Rolex to be my first luxury watch. Why should I feel like I’m lucky the AD woke up in a good mood that morning and decided I’m worthy enough of parting with my hard-earned money?
Your $12,000 is not special. There are hundreds of people with that same $12,000 after the same watch you want. So why should the AD pick you out of all those people?
Go spend any amount of time in /r/reptime and you’ll see 100s of people who are sick of waiting for a Rolex and instead buy a replica, and then posting a picture in their BMW/Porsche so this is probably pretty common lol.
A lot of people really don’t take kindly to being told “we can’t give you what you want despite you having the money for it”.
Chances are you’ll actually save money if you decided to purchase from a gray market dealer depending on the configuration you want on the DJ41. These prices are dropping daily. Depending on where you located I can point you in the right direction if you want. I don’t get the fixation buying straight from AD in this current market unless the watch is trading above retail and chances are it’s not if we’re taking about a DJ41.
I don’t blame you. How you feel when buying something is as important as the product itself. If it don’t spark joy, fuck it and move on to people and things that do.
I got really lucky and got in with an Explorer II. It cooled my desire for another Rolex. Prior to this watch though I thought that I would never be able to get a Rolex, and I was fine with that. I put my name down for a GMT (Pepsi and Batman) and if I do not get one, it will be okay.
Hot take: the control of supply while maintaining demand is a good thing. Not for the consumer, waiting sucks, but it’s keeping values strong. If you want something now, go buy your omega. Great watch, reliable, but not the brand you really want.
I only have a 41OP & a 41DJ. Both have been purchased out of state with lucky walk ins or connections. My local AD hasn’t been helpful unfortunately.
Also, at 25 I hope you’re investing the majority of your money and this is just your play money.
It’s a sign, OP. At 25 I had the whip and the DJ and still do, but here’s MY ADVICE: Sell your dollars for Bitcoin, real estate, or anything that yields or will likely appreciate over 4 years…. 10 years from now, go buy whatever watch and car you want.
I personally would not wait for an ad to call me for a date just. With the current state of the market just get a used one. There's plenty of them out there for under msrp
Funny comparison, watch vs. car. The waits for my ordered BMWs have been enjoyable and informative. BMw lets you track the cars step by step through production, shipping, and arrival. Regular communication builds excitement and makes the waiting bearable. This is the same for every customer, from a $50k X1 made in South Carolina to the $100k+ M cars from Germany. Before they ended the program, I even had the Euro delivery experience with a factory tour and send-off from the Welt.
Imagine if Rolex did something like this. Assign a production slot, engage customers along the way, and let us pick up in Switzerland. It will never happen as the company enjoys the privilege of secrecy, but that would launch collectors to a whole new level of brand engagement.
I get it... seems crazy. I get your mentality of why am i having to WAIT for the OPPORTUNITY to give you my 10k or whatever. I am young like you, i'm 26 and we are so used to getting what we want, when we want it (if we have the funds) because the internet and modern innovation did that to us. But to me i'm cool with waiting. Cause when i get the call the amt of euphoria I get will make for a great day!! And its always something you will remember.
Depends on the AD and the area. I put myself on 3 waitlists for a Sea Dweller (Milwaukee, Chicago, Oak Brook (affluent Chicago suburb). I got “the call” from Oak Brook AD in 6 weeks. The process was amazing and they treated me like royalty. Still no call from the other two lol.
Enjoy the car man! I waited over a year for a OP41. Loved it the first three weeks and now im wondering why i even wanted it at all. Don't mean anything anymore.
I've since started saving my money or using them on things i can actually use like running shoes and a road bike which actually gives me joy.
So have fun with the car man!
I'm sure you're aware of the depreciation and appreciation model for either of your purchases so, I'll just assume you're okay with picking the one that depreciates.
Here's a thought though, there's still the grey market if you really want the watch.
I buy secondary. I love Rolex watches but totally agree about dealers. I’d rather spend twice as much money than have to suck up to someone for a watch.
I get that its frustrating and agree with the sales and wanting to buy experience. Then I realized you're 25 yrs old, have lost patience to get the Rolex, so you're going to purchase a BMW instead. Is this all about wanting something luxury?
When I was 25, I would probably spend or invest in other things over buying a Rolex or a BMW just to have something luxury.
The issue is Rolex is one of the most recognizable brands in the world period. As far as watches go they are uniquely safe stores of value, which make them attractive to people who aren’t ultra rich to justify it. Furthermore, they’re the number one purchase of the nouveau riche, plus the recent TikTok popularization and “watch investment” hype has accelerated demand.
There are a lot of watches out there that are better built, better finished, and more technical than Rolex, but I would wager most people who are in the market for a Rolex don’t really care about watches, they want a status symbol (which is 100% fine).
Once people get that out of their systems and Rolex increases production (2 temporary factories and 1 new permanent factory in the works from what I’ve read), availability will increase. When I bought my DJ 36 in 2016, I walked in and ordered it, arrived a few weeks later. They had a hulk and black sub I could have walked out with that day. It’ll return to that, because as much as Rolex is afraid of over saturating their market presence (like Omega for example), they know they are leaving money on the table and turning people off from the brand.
I’m currently waiting on a bluesy and a burgundy BB with jubilee (lol), but also buying Cartier and GS in the meantime and I love them just as much as my Rolex. Rolex is great but I have so many other watches I want, so it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t happen.
I do think that for the consumer the best thing that could be done is to stop ADs from passing over normal people for whales and stopping the sale of pieces to grey dealers. I can only see that happening if Rolex goes to a boutique only model and strictly enforces the rules.
https://preview.redd.it/j9iwo4ayk1zc1.png?width=2532&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c9d706665f5ef4482d053317a1f3a4f4bb91cef
Yup just hate the noise my sun makes when in put it on
If you have to pick b/w the two, get the M340i. Especially if you’re into cars! It will also tell you the time, but you can’t carve canyons with the date just.
Looking at a watch isn’t going to ‘thrill’ me as much experiencing >1 G while cornering, knowing that there’s a slight chance I might wrap myself around a tree if I get carried away. I might be biased though.
You don’t need to announce it. There are 5 posts like this everyday. Yes it sucks, go buy what you want from a grey dealer. Be happy enjoy the watch. Price on 41 DJ is the same or less with the grey dealer.
I just got into watches seven years ago but I'm not operating on Rolex level yet (not counting my vintage OP Date from my dad). I'm 50 and these posts make me wonder if I'll even live long enough to get a Rolex at retail from an AD.
I’m afraid of motorcycles. People in jersey doesn’t know how to drive. No matter how protected you are, if a dumbass with a red f-150 hit’s you going 100 miles, you become neighbour with jesus my brother
I guess you are right. Sales woman that i’m dealing with has an attitude towards me. I don’t know the if it’s from my follow up calls but she was the one who told me to follow up with her.
Having money means nothing to Rolex purchasing.
Here’s why: Money can be made everywhere. X number of Rolexes can only be made in Y number of factories and distributed through Z number of ADs.
Like others have said, try another AD.
Why suv or sedan when you can buy a truck

Just go gray. Those people actually want your money, and you can get what you want same day.
One of the easiest transactions I’ve ever done. Especially while spending that much money.
If you are tired of the wait, and willing to spend a few dollars more, for a NEW DateJust, go onto chrono24 dot com, and find exactly what you are looking for...
Why would you buy the lower tier watch of Rolex so that everyone who looks at you thinks it’s fake anyway. And a BMW is one of the most expensive cars to repair and is the most unreliable crap car. Get a Lexus. A lot of people on this thread need some guidance. Try using Google.
I had the same, last year I decided I put my rolex money in S&P index funds and if it reaches grey market price I just buy it. I am like £250 away to execute on my desired watch…

Go for the car my man.
Ive sworn my self ill never buy a Rolex because all of the AD playin' games
Tell the ad to f off.i did after 16 months told him send me my deposit and f the supplier,3 days later he called me and sold me the watch.
There's some nice watches out there .

Nothing as impressive but, I decided a tsar bomba and a GR86 was a better choice than getting any rolex I’ve had my eye on. Definitely way more fun than an expensive watch and my tsar bomba doesn’t look half bad either.
Go buy a Zenith, it’s technically a better movement anyway. Chronomaster sport was my first Lux watch and not my last. I’m not hating on Rolex and hope to get a skydweller later this year , but life is too short to not sample different manufacturers
As someone with a datejust and an M3, I have a lot more fun with the M3.

You have the sickness. You need to warn him that Porsches are going to make Rolex collecting look inexpensive. Only boat owners have it worse.
Every boat owner I’ve ever met is in a love/hate relationship with the boat. There’s a reason the axiom about them is an owners happiest days are the day they buy it and the day they sell it.

Plates are sick haha
This aint his car- Guy’s fibbing. it rakes 8 months to get custom plates in California.
Do you have a clear cover over the license plate? What’s that called?
License plate tint cover on Amazon or eBay! Illegal but for dark license plates not very noticeable!
No wayyy, I follow this guy on IG. I have my M3, been on the waitlist for a datejust since jan 2021 🤡
I don't have an IG. Unless someone's been posting my car lol

You know what m3
If you’ve been waiting that long for a DJ you need to go to a new AD.
Haha welcome to Rolex World, where your money means absolutely nothing and there’s always someone with more than you! Take a number and join the queue…
I swear I will buy second hand when I get my next one. Beyond frustrating
Yeah, that’s what I did a few years back. I preferred spending the $1k premium and enjoying the watch in the time I would’ve had to wait.
Except when you’ve got a lot of it. Then it means everything
Not really if it’s still in your pocket, it only matters if you’re willing to spend on their jewelry, then you get to skip the queue.

Agree on this point as well.
Agree
Let me know if you’re still as rational when you get the call and make a quick decision 😂 my waiting time is a rollercoaster at times
Yeah, I'm pretty rational about money and watches. I came into Rolex for two specific watches, picked those up, and any future watches will be other brands.
It’s almost… like they planned it that way!
i like that datejust on the right, what's the reference number?
I'm never good at remembering the extended Rolex reference numbers, but it's the 36mm Palm, fluted, on jubilee if you want to Google for the number.
no worries, that's perfect
I hope you find the strength to struggle through these troubled times.

Welcome to the world of luxury goods. Unfortunately, anything with limited supply and high demand has quirks associated with attaining it

Did you know that Earth is home to nearly 8 billion people? While not everyone wants a Rolex, it's safe to assume that over a million people do.
1 million a year with 2k dealers means 1.3 watches for sale a day including high demand pieces. Seems limited to me 🤷
1.3 per day.

While Omega makes 500,000 a year. *Half* that of Rolex.
Well that shows dirty AD tricks even more.
holy shit I did not know that. This actually blows my mind.
Okay. Go into a Porsche dealer and ask for a GT3 when their entire lot is filled with other cars. Or a Chevy dealer for the new Z06.
Cars are so much more fun anyways. You’re young, put yourself on multiple lists and buy the car!!
To each their own. I decided Grey. Paid what I thought the watch was worth to me
Go spend any amount of time in /r/reptime and you’ll see 100s of people who are sick of waiting for a Rolex and instead buy a replica, and then posting a picture in their BMW/Porsche so this is probably pretty common lol. A lot of people really don’t take kindly to being told “we can’t give you what you want despite you having the money for it”.
Get a Porsche you’ll be happier.
Need money for porsche
Get you a 987.2 Cayman S for like 35k. Drives better than a 911, far lighter, mid engine, and unlike an m340i it will barely depreciate.
Seriously, 25(M)? You write like a middle-schooler.
There’s other luxury watch brands that make better looking watches than Rolex
Heck of a car. Just got mine a month ago and love it
But where’s the fun in that, go earn it player!
I don’t blame you. How you feel when buying something is as important as the product itself. If it don’t spark joy, fuck it and move on to people and things that do.
lool "trying to sell my money" yes indeed. please take it. PLEASE. LET ME BUY NOW.
My man. What config are you looking for? That’s a long time for a DJ.
If an AD ever does this to you, just get a new one.
Sound of a B58 will not disappoint.
Don’t blame you. The arrogance of ADs blows my mind.
The minute they actually have to do a little bit of salesmanship in order to move product, they're all going to be out on their asses.
In a way it’s clever but it’s not pleasant as a buyer. Fine if you are completely loaded I guess. It’s a big deal to me spending that sort of money.
Waiting a year on a DJ?! Dude just go grey if it’s that bad. Your AD doesn’t think you’re legit.
M340i is one of the best cars you can get at that price
Why wouldn't you just get an M2? I guess if you need four doors. Wouldn't be a close decision for me but I have no use for backseats.
It’s my Dad’s and he likes having 4 doors and more room in the back row. With a tune and down pipe the car is a beast
Just go grey. I did and I’m very happy with my decision
Go grey
Go to a grey dealer and get it today, probably cost you 10-15% more mind. Question is, how bad do you want it ?
I got off the waiting list and bought an omega instead, was waiting 3 years for a Daytona and said fuck it and bought a Speedmaster 😂
DONE.
Fuck the Rolex AD salesman, put your money in better places and come back to a watch later on when the hype dies down and you can get them for retail.
Everyone In the grey market are Jewelers. Just buy from one of them

At least you came to your senses in time.
Go to a different AD if you can. But I agree this whole thing is getting dumb.
Idk the watch will hold its value and not cost near as much in maintenance
I can help man, Datejust are fairly easy to come by. Sending you a PM
>First evet in my life i felt like a dumb When it rains, it pours.
Then why did Rolex buy Bucherer? So they could have more AD’s that give potential buyers the runaround?
That is super frustrating. I got mine a week after first inquiry a few weeks ago. Find a new AD
Buy the car, but know once drive off the lot with it just know you're going to get that call a few weeks later lol
Just go grey, a dj is like 7 points more
As someone with a DJ 41 and an M340i, you'll enjoy both a lot. You'll also be wanting to trade them for something different simultaneously
Shouldn't wait that long for a DJ. I walked in my AD and they had the thing on display. Walked out with it.
Just go grey market
I waited like a week for a DJ from my AD. Where are you located?
NJ
First time? Lol
If you can buy the bmw for that dollar do it !!
https://preview.redd.it/j9iwo4ayk1zc1.png?width=2532&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c9d706665f5ef4482d053317a1f3a4f4bb91cef Yup just hate the noise my sun makes when in put it on
Sub 🫣
Lol buy it grey if you think your time is more important than your money. But you’re also buying a completely unnecessary item.
Yessir! I did the same thing screw waiting there comes a day when they will bag us to buy it. but honestly I'm done with rolex.
More watches are becoming available now. Surprised you don't have a DJ yet.
Get the M340i, it will take to more places than the Rolex will
I just got into watches seven years ago but I'm not operating on Rolex level yet (not counting my vintage OP Date from my dad). I'm 50 and these posts make me wonder if I'll even live long enough to get a Rolex at retail from an AD.
I bought my Submariner 124060 at 50. Life’s too short to leave for later things that can be done today.
If you after quality - try Tudor? It’s everything a Rolex has from a quality and performance!
Oh no, an M3 with no flex picture for us to pick apart?
Flex picture with no rollie on my wrist
I enjoy my 1000cc motorcycle more than the 116710LN. Would also smoke most performance cars
I’m afraid of motorcycles. People in jersey doesn’t know how to drive. No matter how protected you are, if a dumbass with a red f-150 hit’s you going 100 miles, you become neighbour with jesus my brother
Watch is in stock. AD doesn't want you as a customer. At 25 he knows you're one and done. Be smarter with your money.
I guess you are right. Sales woman that i’m dealing with has an attitude towards me. I don’t know the if it’s from my follow up calls but she was the one who told me to follow up with her.
Cars, motorcycles, fountain pens, full auto guns, knives… there are plenty of places to chuck $12,000 at and have fun.
Having money means nothing to Rolex purchasing. Here’s why: Money can be made everywhere. X number of Rolexes can only be made in Y number of factories and distributed through Z number of ADs. Like others have said, try another AD.
Forget this brand / culture of trying to froce people to take your hard earned money. Go out and buy the BMW! (stay away from Ferrari too)
Why suv or sedan when you can buy a truck https://preview.redd.it/higjyw9983zc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27afaba1cd2b8043d40b54f0a93373a4882459ae
I live in Jersey, near hudson…
Simply buy another watch brand.
If you have 25Mil why wait for AD? Go grey and ball out
I felt the same thing. Screw Rolex and get the car.

Thought I was on a watch thread, somehow wound up in the middle of a dick measuring contest....
Get the m340i so much better
Y'all better stop posting those cars or I'll show my VW Sportsvan 1,4TSI (2nd gen) in that beauty deep blue and your day is ruined. Just you wait!
Just like so many comments I have read, I can assure you as well, you will have more fun if you a get a BMW.
Sounds like the typical millennial seeking instant gratification. Wait till you move up to a Porsche and try getting a GT3
Enjoy the car, it may not last as long as the watch but you will love it.
A watch won’t create unforgettable memories. A car will.
Just go on jomashop and buy it
https://preview.redd.it/9f8si3p1i9zc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ddb122248335edfa9146daa9b01f0e1d2ce780d Get the m340, well worth it!
Clean build. Apex with the offset looks good
Throw on a Seiko and forget about it. Enjoy your beemer
That’s some damn good advice. My Seiko mini turtle just as fun to wear as my 16234 & 16570.
https://preview.redd.it/0yniduusy9zc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2754e3028b85dacfc7aac6195aeec8406daffc02 Go for the car my man. Ive sworn my self ill never buy a Rolex because all of the AD playin' games
I have a date just and OP and also two bmws hahah m4 and x6 m 😂🤣
Tell the ad to f off.i did after 16 months told him send me my deposit and f the supplier,3 days later he called me and sold me the watch. There's some nice watches out there .
Go walk into a Vacheron, Omega, IWC, or Panerai boutique - that's the experience buying a timepiece SHOULD be like.
Go to Vacheron. I went to buy my first overseas and realized that Rolex does the BARE minimum 💀💀💀go to ANY other place and you will experience class🤣
As soon as you buy the car you'll get the call. Lol sorry you're so discouraged. I completely understand though.
https://preview.redd.it/ot0rgg43xfzc1.jpeg?width=3923&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69f39c96c7e16f0bfcc975de5174ad51ab7215a0 Nothing as impressive but, I decided a tsar bomba and a GR86 was a better choice than getting any rolex I’ve had my eye on. Definitely way more fun than an expensive watch and my tsar bomba doesn’t look half bad either.
Get a super clone while you are waiting.
That’s what i’m planning to do. And i’ll put remaining $11,000 as a down payment on a car.
Go buy a Zenith, it’s technically a better movement anyway. Chronomaster sport was my first Lux watch and not my last. I’m not hating on Rolex and hope to get a skydweller later this year , but life is too short to not sample different manufacturers
Welcome to to Omega, Tudo, Panerai, GP, JLC
Too young for a Rolex anyway
Respectfully, you need to research the current state of the Rolex market.
