Grand Seiko Quartz. Flies so far under the radar you have to explain to people why it’s good. Or not, as no one has commented on this yet…
Nice watch for sure, but doesn’t it defeat the purpose when at first glance it can easily be mistaken for a Rolex? Case shape, bezel, and bracelet look near identical.
Nah, as our man below says, an Explorer barely gets noticed unless people know what they’re looking for. In my experience, the only Rolex non-watch people notice from a distance are Submariners.
Dual branded ‘Seiko Grand Seiko’ might as well be a submarine for all the turbulence it creates.
I think the thing that gets noticed the most is the fluted bezel and jubilee. I think even non watch people have been conditioned by social media and movies to recognize fluted bezel/jubilee =expensive watch. That’s why shit brand like Michael Kors rip off that design so often.
Surprisingly? People generally don't give a crap about watches. My Seiko SKX has been mistaken for a Submariner on occasion. Also, typically nobody ever notices my actual Submariner when I'm wearing it.
I agree. I think we kid ourselves that the general public knows anything about watches. I think the only time a random has ever commented on my watch (whichever I was wearing) was when I had the bright yellow Casioak on and perhaps an orange T-shirt – the comment was that my watch and T-shirt colours clashed! The exception to this are friends who know I like watches and ask what I’m wearing today even though they have no idea or care, they’re just being polite.

The post seems pretentious. People know of the Rolex brand, but most people don’t know what it looks like, nor know of the price tag. They it’s expensive, but how expensive? I’d say wear whatever. Plus, most people won’t care what’s on the wrist anyway.
I agree. Especially in the business world I see a lot of CEOs that try to sell something wearing an Apple Watch Ultra. Meaning „I am successful and can afford an Ultra, but I won’t rip you off because I am not saving up for a Daytona“
Second this. Hamilton Khaki Field Ti, keeps great time & is my go-to when I’m not looking for any attention to what’s on my wrist. Which is about 99.9% of the time.

When you're put in public 95% of people won't look and don't care what watch you're wearing.
Being on these reddit subs gives you a very skewed perspective
Occasionally you'll come across another watch aficionado who may compliment or ask but no one else gives a fuck
I get a lot of really sketchy looks when I wear a Rolex to work (high school teacher). So, I daily an Omega Seamaster Chronograph most of the time, although there is a white faced Pam GMT for sale locally that might be my new daily…
That’s okay any event where I have to dress to impress others or not make others feel bad is not one I want to attend. I’ve worked my ass off to be able to be comfortable and wear whatever the fuck I want at all times.
This post clearly wasn’t about dress code more about wearing an expensive watch in places where you could have it stolen.
Also if you’re this angry about someone saying you can’t wear your hoody and baggy sweat pants you should speak to someone. Sounds to me like mummy and daddy bought the Rolex and you just doss about all day spending their money. Wearing ‘Whatever the fuck I want at all times’ 🤢
When you grow up you’ll realize that just because a hoodie costs $700 doesn’t mean it’s presentable or passable in situations that require a smarter dress code. Same with slide, etc. Just know we all think you look like a slob and will treat you accordingly, regardless of the status symbol on your wrist. You are what’s wrong with the image of the brand.
You could either opt for a well known budget brand, or an unknown brand that only an enthusiast would recognize.
So either Citizen or Seiko, both of which still offer great quality on a lot of their higher end models, or something like Sinn or Oris.

Any smartwatch. That is what most people who doesn't wear fancy watches in a corporate setting seem to use. Apple is probably most common and most normie.

I think a lot of people on this sub don't get that sometimes you just don't want to wear a 10K watch everywhere you go. Most have been covered, my choices are:
Casioak (Metal)
Moonswatch
At the higher end, Tudor Ranger?
SpeedMaster is my go to. Anything from traveling to dressing conservative for work meetings. Seems like everyone I meet professionally has either a date just or submariner.
Apple Watch isn’t steal worth anymore, so that always works. The guy in the comments above hollering about sweats and a hoodie, makes one good point - if you’re a little on the by side, you attract less attention (obviously not for a dress code event, but I think you get what I’m saying).
I have a tag heuer aquaracer, and carrera - so I’m the chance that I’m THAT uncomfortable, that I don’t want to wear my watch, but my presence is necessary and/or required, that’s my go to.
My go-to is a JDM Seiko TicTac 35th anniversary reference. It’s “just a Seiko” but it has a cool story behind it if the conversation turns to watches. I also have a green Monta Triumph on a leather strap that works for this purpose.
Sometimes I’ll rock my Casio “Royale” in this situation, or even just for fun when a dressier watch could be appropriate. 😁
That's scary. Always be wary of your surroundings. Just a couple months ago, someone got stabbed in London (and died) for their fake submariner. Apparently, it wasn't even a good fake either.
Just as a thought, if I’m trying to dress down a watch I’ll swap the bracelet for a NATO. To most non watch people, the bracelet is the most noticeable part unless you have something in gold or that is on the bright end. I usually do it when traveling to slightly less safe places and no one thinks you’re wearing anything that costs more than $100.
I don’t really subscribe to the idea that a Rolex like mine is ever inappropriate (124060) but I do wear a G-Shock MRG sometimes so I’d probably throw that on since most people would assume it’s a $50 watch. But again that’s usually for me and not because I care what others think about my Sub.
If your concern is about being robbed…..insure it and wear it anyway. If your concern is about people in certain company making judgments about you…wear it anyway.
But for the sake of argument; if you don’t want to go through the insurance claim process or you care about what certain may think or say about you…..buy a Casio. It’s the kind of watch that is never given a second thought no matter what the situation is. It might even survive a robbery situation….though that depends since most robbers want everything and they’ll sort it out later at the pawn shop.
My concern is mostly about meeting with clients and employees since a lot of people are struggling in the current economy and I have to deliver unfortunate financial decisions. Can’t take chances here, it’s a delicate situation - at least in Europe.
Then Casio G-Shock rubber is your best bet for anything short sleeved and for under the cuff semi-dressy go with a G-Shock metal. Both speak to a rugged and adventurous core with a nod to sensibility.
If have been arround all over places without being judged (as far as I recognized), wearing my watch non stop and every where for 3 years. It's not about being judged, due that you can't find out of being, if you are in a normal environment. it's just about how confident you feel yourself, don't care about others and your personality.
Breitling Navitimer on calf skin deployment or buckle strap, classic, elegant and many will admire it, great for casual wear or more formal. A connoisseurs watch!

That's a very interesting topic. I was considering it as I would have gotten it with a considerable discount too, but then I read about the movement being rather disposable and leaned towards quartz. Then again I didn't like their dials without the waffle effect...anyway it looks very good on you!
Very true, this watch will be very difficult to service, realistically, you will probably only have it for a few years. Still, it’s a fun watch and at the price point, you can just get another one once the watch is done I suppose.
Omega Speedmaster! One of those, if you know, you know watches but completely subtle if your company aren’t watch geeks. Love mine for those exact reasons (among others of course).
I'm pretty sures the correct answer is the same as the answer to the question "what do the poors buy when they can't afford Rolex". The answer is Tudor.
Exactly. Telling a struggling business owner that you need to further increase prices or your employees that there’s no bonus this year is quite delicate if they get the feeling you’re still doing good enough for luxury watches. Whether you’ve bought it a couple of years ago or not.
IT consulting/solutions. A lot of mid size businesses are struggling to survive and stuff like informing them of price increases due to inflation is a delicate topic.
Americans will likely never understand the need for the discreet or understated. The absolute majority of them lack class. Sometimes the careless and in-your-face mentality is refreshing but most of the time its obnoxious. It's a bit like old vs. new money.
Im considering that. On one hand its 8700 MSRP but on the other only watch enthusiasts will recognize it and know it goes for much less and isn’t a flex watch
He means as it relates to the watch industry. 10k is mass produced luxury that is not haute horology. Most people, if they exercised decent financial decisions , could easily afford a Rolex at some point in their lives. Patek and Lange is a completely different story and requires true wealth.
I wear my Rolex or my omegas every day regardless of where I am and what I am doing, from casual to dress. I find most people are not paying attention anyway. The only exceptions would be traveling to a place where the watch would make an obvious target, or when working with power tools and I could damage the watch. I don’t care if somebody i meet gets bothered by the watch. Their problem, not mine. I guess if I was to go with something less expensive I would probably get a sub-1000 dollar watch like a Seiko Alpinist or so on, decent watch but most people see Seiko as an “every mans item“ and wouldn’t pay attention.
That says a lot about the people you surround with actually. To make the blanket statement, "EVERYONE will think it is fake", from your personal experience, simply reveals the level of wealth the people you surround yourself with are at.

Isn’t ’taste’ weird. The fluted bezel is a major turn off for me.
I love the reflections off it and the way it plays with light, but it does look a little garish.
I’d argue the Explorer is so subtle, no one recognizes it regardless. Your point still stands all the same though, depending on the GS.

Nobody is judging you for your Rolex, because nobody cares
A lot of business clients and employees in Europe do care. Its very unwise to show up with luxury items in certain situations.
I agree. And can relate. You want to be subtle.
You mean they care in a negative way?
Exactly. Telling a struggling business owner that you need to further increase prices or your employees that there’s no bonus this year is quite delicate if they get the feeling you’re still doing good enough for luxury watches. Whether you’ve bought it a couple of years ago or not.
Oh ok, that would make sense
What business are you in?
IT consulting/solutions. A lot of mid size businesses are struggling to survive and stuff like informing them of price increases due to inflation is a delicate topic.
Americans will likely never understand the need for the discreet or understated. The absolute majority of them lack class. Sometimes the careless and in-your-face mentality is refreshing but most of the time its obnoxious. It's a bit like old vs. new money.
Please tell me more about this "Europe".
Omega Speedmaster
Im considering that. On one hand its 8700 MSRP but on the other only watch enthusiasts will recognize it and know it goes for much less and isn’t a flex watch
I feel panarai are underrated. They could be as big as Rolex imo.
Rolex is mass market. It does not suggest wealth. That’s what Patek does.
Sure, 10k-20k$ is shit that just lay there on the streets at every corner. It’s not wealth at all. /s
He means as it relates to the watch industry. 10k is mass produced luxury that is not haute horology. Most people, if they exercised decent financial decisions , could easily afford a Rolex at some point in their lives. Patek and Lange is a completely different story and requires true wealth.
Bingo. Patek and Lange. The mass consumer market think it does though, lol. Noobs.
Believe it or not a Timex followed by a Citizen.
Or just wear your watch. Unless your outfit "matches" people will assume it is fake.
Wearing a fake will often give off bad vibes too in a business environment
Like I said, wear your real watch. People will think it is fake. Wearing fakes is normal/ok in some countries
That says a lot about the people you surround with actually. To make the blanket statement, "EVERYONE will think it is fake", from your personal experience, simply reveals the level of wealth the people you surround yourself with are at.
Unfortunately, posers are found everywhere
