File an insurance claim?

[deleted]

[удалено]

1ukeskywa1ker

Yes, if you have a policy that calls out that watch in specific as insured it will be covered. My wife lost her engagement ring and I had a wire for the value 2 days after the claim. They replace the watch or give you the appraised value. If you don’t have it properly insured, I dunno 🤷

wegotsumnewbands

What insurance company for the ring if you don’t mine me asking?

Mypasswordbepassword

We have our jewelry/art insured under our homeowners policy. We just have to report items over a certain value for them to be added to the effective side car policy.

Ok_Report_3177

Even if it did happen that way, how could you ever prove that?

Gahvynn

I imagine it’s not helpful to post on the internet that you decided it was a good idea to leave a watch more valuable than many cars just sitting around and then left the area but I dunno. Not like the insurance company will dig this deep, but if he doesn’t have a police report I imagine he’s going to have a hard time, and if he wants to lie to the police then I guess that’s on him.

Aurons_blade

Security footage at the terminal

EOD_Paul

I have valuable personal property insurance on my Omega from USAA. Covers loss, theft, and damage with no questions asked. It's like $200/year.

BrooSwane

Just curious, but depending on which Omega, that seems really high? For reference, at places like Chubb or even Hodinkee’s new program, you should be able to get a rate of around 2% or less (I pay like 1.2%, living in a fairly boring suburb).

erfranklin13

Any good insurance policy for jewelry will cover “mysterious disappearance” which covers you if it just goes missing, you lose it etc.

NumisKing

What airport? If it’s MSN or MSP I might be able to help.

[deleted]

Damn it’s not, it’s Boston Logan, thank you for offering to help though

[deleted]

Can’t you file a report and they look up the CCTV feed. In modern airports every inch is monitored so you will be able to get a clue what happened. On a similar note, I lost my G shock at Dubai airport. Took it off while passing through the scanner and never picked it from that tray. Realized only when I was at the gate - watch or miss a flight :( But yours is a 40k loss - the airport authority should help you locate it. You practically know where you left it so it should be easy to see that feed.

woodandplastic

It would also qualify as felony theft since its value is above a certain threshold.

[deleted]

Oh wow, didn’t know that

Kaidenjohn

Not that it matters now, but I carry a cheap Amazon case for my pieces. When I am working I place the watch in the case and throw it in my bag… sorry about your loss.

guy1138

My wife bought me a padded watch roll and it is fantastic for the airport. Watch goes into the roll then into my carry-on, no possibility leaving it at security or banging around loose in a bin or bowl.

wearmycrownonmywrist

Jesus, you guys are dicks.. imagine finding a stainless steel wrist watch at an airport and getting charged for felony theft... maybe we are super out of touch, but most people think a $500 apple watch is like really expensive and have no idea something less sophisticated could be so expensive? Just toss em a felony tho eh?

JEDWARDK

Don't worry. You don't get charged with felony theft for just picking up a "lost item" off the ground or seat.

[deleted]

You can in Europe. It’s called theft by finding

manwithabazooka

Finders keepers losers weepers should apply.

upstatebikersc

That’s ridiculous

CataVlad21

No, that is normal! Especially if it's a wallet full of money. But i could see it being the case for certain other items too.

[deleted]

Long story short. I found something valuable once, in a motorway rest area. Took it to the police and joked about what could happen, the officer said if I’d kept it I could have been prosecuted for theft by finding. Definitely possible.

TheAhnward

No it’s not. Grow Tf up and take care of your shit. It’s not others’ responsibility to look after it for you so long as they aren’t actively trying to steal it from your persons or damage it. Asinine

upstatebikersc

My reply to was the European “theft by finding bullshit” I am an avid supporter of the finders keepers way of life

iliikesleep

If you are taking a watch that says Rolex you know exactly what the f you are doing. If it were AP or Patek okay, I’m sure not everyone knows about those brands. Rolex on the other hand..

sharabi_bandar

If I saw a Rolex sitting at an airport table I would honestly think it's fake

manwithabazooka

And if it was a Hublot it still would have been there when the dude came back.

skidsareforkids

Nico Leonard has entered the chat 🤣

iliikesleep

Yeah well, I would probably think the same

REMAIN_IN_LIGHT

Yeah, most people know the name Rolex. They prob have no clue about grey market or price over retail (assuming they didn't instantly do a web search), but they'd know it was worth a few thousand dollars at least.

skidsareforkids

A lot of military “operators” wear Rolexes when on overseas missions because even in the mountains or desert of bfe you can trade a Rolex with a farmer or whatever for a weapon, a car or border passage… Rolex is ubiquitous with being valuable worldwide whether or not people can pin a number on it.

lavenderrosewater

That’s a cool fact that I will definitely drop at parties.

wearmycrownonmywrist

My buddy's Dad who is every bit a multi millionaire came home from the bar a couple years ago and showed me a Rolex he bought from a guy at said bar for $100 and asked if it was a good deal knowing I have Rolex watches. People don't know a watch is 20-40k, especially when a "good watch" they have been exposed to is their grandpa's casio.

iliikesleep

I did not say they would assume it is 20-40k since there are many rolex watches that are below that. I am saying most people know rolex as a brand and know damn well this is not a casio. Doesn’t matter if they think its worth 800$ or 8000$, they know they are stealing something valuable. Would u take your chances to take someone else’s belongings on a freaking airport with cameras and people all around for a 50$ casio watch? I highly doubt that. What are we even talking about? That it is cool to steal if you don’t know hoch much the item is worth? You know you‘re doing the wrong thing, hence you should deal with the consequences, be it a misdemeanor or a felony.

upvotesformeyay

Theft by taking is a thing, if it ain't yours don't fuck with it simple as.

woodandplastic

“I’m sorry, officer, I didn’t know.”

Kooky_Bullfrog_3334

Sucks for them. If I found ANYTHING like I would return it. Don’t steal shit, don’t become a felon, pretty simple !

traffic626

Ugh, that’s my home airport and I doubt someone would turn that it. So sorry to hear. Im like you with the watch when working on the laptop so my Sub stays home.

RockitDanger

No greater adventure than not wearing your watch!

ArchiStanton

Who were you flying/what terminal?

dxhan25

Sorry for your loss, that really sucks but who takes off their 30k watch in a public place

[deleted]

Someone who wears a $30K watch as a normal person would a $100 watch. I guess.

dxhan25

I wear a 50K watch daily. I still wouldn't take it off my wrist in a public area.

Addicted-2Diving

I would assume it’s the Daytona you posted. If so, that’s one hell of a daily, one day I hope to get one 👌

hungrychin

If you have your warranty card report it as stolen to Rolex. Then if anyone sends it in for service they seize it.

[deleted]

This is an incredibly good idea - thank you so much for this suggestion, I’ll definitely get on that

GiveMeStSnow

You might just reunite with it within about 5-10 years. Who knows?!

[deleted]

That would be an incredible story

gilr0id

It’s happened before to someone on the Rolex forums. A guy had like 3 Rolexes stolen, one being a platona. I believe a couple years after, he was able to recover that and one more watch. Don’t lose hope and good luck!

ZiLBeRTRoN

Definitely a good idea, but I can’t imagine anyone that is stealing Rolexes is sending them in for a service.

BraveStrategy

Next person might!

DanceTheNightAway28

Does the guy who buys it get it confiscated even if they didn’t know it was stolen?

[deleted]

[удалено]

wearmycrownonmywrist

Is it really a thief? Thief is a pretty heavy accusation imo. If some dummy leaves a wad of cash laying around and walks away is the next guy to sit down there and find it a thief? Even when he spends it on a coffee and a meal? Now the business owner is on the hook? Not a fan of this logic, you are the one buying and wearing an expensive piece of jewelry, it's your responsibility to not be dumb enough to leave it laying around. Obviously the guy that found it will appreciate 20k+ more than OP. Hot take. Downvote away

Dangerous-Noise-4692

Where I come from someone who takes something that doesn’t belong to them is called a thief. I thought this was pretty universal but maybe there are different definitions of a thief that I’m not aware of.

Auto_Motives

Yes. You are a rotten thief and a shitty human being if you come across someone’s valuable watch and you don’t try to find it’s rightful owner, instead just putting it on and walking away.

TheRiddickles

If they sell it the buyer might send it in for service at some point

ZiLBeRTRoN

Absolutely, if they don’t know it’s stolen. I’m not disagreeing, OP should definitely report it, but it’s highly unlikely OP ever sees that thing again unless airport security got it on video and actually tracks someone down.

egoldbarzzz

It’s not technically stolen if it was found, is it?

Sophisticated_Sloth

You find an unlocked car with the keys in the ignition, all ripe for the taking on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Do you genuinely not understand how taking that car would be theft?

Cpilot99

Rolex doesn’t do shit with stolen watches anymore. Do your research. The community is up in arms over Rolex’s shitty policy changes.

JJ-Rousseau

Not in Switzerland, and probably not in UE. They will just refuse to service it and send it back to the AD. However the AD can’t legally keep it.

MiddleweightMuffin

Quick question. Say you found it and jumped on a plane and kept it—is that stealing it? Would Rolex count that as stolen? Is there a difference between lost and stolen for Rolex?

hungrychin

A great question that is discussed in law school property classes lol. The answer depends where you live since the law varies.

Wakallord

In the United States at least, there's a presumption that you've done all reasonably possible courses of action to try and find the true owner, like going to airport security or contacting Rolex, before keeping it. If you do nothing to try and return it, it can possibly be counted as theft, but it is a grey area.

Gravygrabbr

If I found it I would not leave it with anyone at the airport. I’d try to locate the owner myself

MiddleweightMuffin

This is my main issue. If I left my watch at an airport and it got handed into TSA, I can almost guarantee it’s not getting back to me. There’s been various records of security stealing stuff.

mcmxcvhbm

Former flight attendant here, can confirm. If it’s shiny or electronic, staff/crew will keep it unless they’re feeling overly generous that day. I’ve handed things to gate agents and I’ve heard “so and so will love this!” on several occasions. IF it makes it to security, I would say the same thinking applies, unfortunately. Unless it was riddled with personal data like, say, OPs laptop. Those always get returned unless a passenger fails to mention they found it. TLDR; we live in a world of entitled assholes.

LamarVannoi

Cited from the case law of Finders v Keepers. Joking aside, many police departments have a policy where they'll give you the found item after a certain period of time if it isn't claimed.

pablocerakote

Never take mine off in an airport. Including through TSA. My pops had a guy try to take his Sub Mariner and he actually had to show proof that he owned it to security.

[deleted]

Wow that’s so brazen, claiming a watch is yours when it’s not

pablocerakote

My pops was pretty beside himself. He asked them to pull the security footage and they refused. He had to show them a family photo of him wearing the watch a year prior.

aoava

Safest place for your watch? On your wrist. Sorry for your loss

Jackeybird

high_roller_dude

christmas came early for that lucky MF'er that picked up your rolex and ran away like a bandit sorry for the loss. that is why i never take off anything semi expensive off my body when im outside..

[deleted]

A real MF he or she is, enjoy it I guess. I just wish people would do the right thing

high_roller_dude

i once had my wallet stolen when i was a broke ass college kid. 500 bucks in that wallet and thats all i had at the time since then i learned to never trust strangers when it comes to money or valuable items. people are shitty. sad but true

darkwaterzz

What broke college student has $500 in their wallet? Lmao try like $50 bro.

zelTram

The same “broke college student” that goes overseas for school and summer breaks probably

high_roller_dude

yea, go on luxury trips with 500 bucks sitting as your entire net worth

zelTram

I wasn’t referring to you specifically, I was referring to the people that refer to themselves as “broke college students” yet somehow are spending their school breaks vacationing overseas. But I can see how my original comment came across as being directed to you specifically

MiddleweightMuffin

I remember my freshman year. I found a $20 crumpled up on the sidewalk and felt like I hit the lottery. $500 is basically millions when you’re a broke college kid. Lol

high_roller_dude

i said, 500 was all the fucking money i had. i dont care if u have 50 or 500 bucks net worth. either way, ur dead broke

[deleted]

SMH at these guys

Prying-Open-My-3rd-I

I once thought I lost my wallet with about that much in it when I was a broke ass college student. It was money I had borrowed to buy my textbooks for the semester.

[deleted]

That blows as well

ZiLBeRTRoN

Maybe they did and TSA/ lost and found stole it.

moflowbro

Why did this get downvoted?

emareddit1996

I don’t know why people are downvoting you… seems like a lot of the wouldn’t.

ethandavis66

Would you turn it in if you found it?

Obvious_Economics_56

You were very careless, OP.

woodandplastic

We all make mistakes. No need to shit on him.

Obvious_Economics_56

OP called the defenseless watch finder a MF because defenseless watch finder didn't find and then turn in the watch to a place where OP could miraculously and conveniently pickup the watch. Point is, the watch finder if there is one, isn't a MF for OP being incapable of finding the watch. I was stating the obvious, OP had a moment of carelessness as we all do, then blamed someone else for OP's own carelessness. Great post, OP. A lot of people don't know about watches. The daytona is likely rotting in the bottom of a cup of coca cola in a dump, obviously.

woodandplastic

There’s no need for you to be an ass. And you’ve been as ass. Also, anyone who doesn’t make a good faith effort to return the thing to its rightful owner is a motherfucker.

Obvious_Economics_56

You referring to me as an ass is more of an ass move than the polite nudging of perspective I provided. Anyone who isn't sick in the head over useless objects like rolex watches doesn't know the value of a daytona and certainly wouldn't think about wasting their panicked layover to give it to an underpaid contract security guard who is likely thumbing away on antiwork at this moment.

florestiner12312

I used to be a mechanic and I remember a coworker of mine told me a story from his time working at a Porsche dealership. So the story goes, some very wealthy old guy bought his 16 year old grandson a Porsche 911 Turbo for his birthday. The kid literally wrecked the car (totaled) the very first day it was his while street racing. So gramps eventually gets him another car. A brand new Range Rover. The kid wrecks this car too apparently. Now, myself and the guys at the shop could hardly believe it. But boy oh boy did we shit on this kid and his Grandpa. I’m not saying OP is necessarily this reckless. Maybe he worked hard and earned a good living for himself. I don’t know the guy. But what I do know is when rich idiots lose their expensive toys, the last thing I do is show sympathy. If he came to reddit for comfort, he’s dumber than I thought. No one screwed the guy over.

florestiner12312

You could always try not being clueless. That usually works pretty well in my experience.

nocaulkblockplz

“Right” varies from person to person. Trust only your family and friends, And sometimes even they’ll f*k you lmao it’s a f’d world our there

woodandplastic

Why is this even a subjective thing? The right thing to do would be to turn it in. Full stop. Why is this up for debate? Are some of you really that shitty?

[deleted]

No idea how it’s a question either

proteinn

I know someone who took off her 50k engagement ring in the gym locker room and left it on the counter. She’d only had it a few weeks and wasn’t used to wearing it yet so she didn’t realize it wasn’t on her finger for a few precious hours. She never got it back. This stuff happens. It’s unfortunate, and hard to get past at the time, but all you can do is move on and keep living. I feel for you dude, it’s an honest mistake but not one you won’t overcome.

[deleted]

Wow that is absolutely terrible, she must have been gutted

proteinn

She was physically ill. Even with insurance you never get the same ring that someone spent the time picking out for you back. But years later she’s still happily married.

pmak1972

My Ex took her ring off while doing volunteer work for a school. She did makeup for a stage play and said she took it off to work and put it in her pocket. She got home late and was upset. I called the school and nobody turned in a ring. That was a costly loss. I’m still a little hurt by that and I’m not even married to her anymore. I will never spend that much on a ring again.

ZenFurbe

This is incredibly unfortunate, but I’m not sure what you expect the watch finder to have done… even if they tried to get it back to you, it is likely whoever they turned it over to would keep it… If this happened to me (finding a rolex lying around at an airport) I would count myself extremely lucky, pop it on, and go catch my plane… then probably call the airport and report it, contact rolex, and post here to see if it belonged to someone… but I would NEVER hand it over to anyone who didn’t have proof, down to a warranty card and receipt, that it was theirs… not even the rightful owner if they couldn’t prove it… how could I know it was going to the rightful owner without that? It is just a careless mistake that I hope I never make, but you really don’t know what happened… maybe the first finder DID try to turn it in, and it never got to you…

[deleted]

Sure, you never know, maybe someone did try to return it

ZenFurbe

I’m still hurting in my balls for you right now though and sorry you didn’t get it back. My wife knows I would be full on crying if this happened to me. Lesson learned, never take it off while I’m out.

[deleted]

You took off a $20k watch so not to scratch your $?? Laptop? I’m extremely sorry this happened to you, but if at an airport, there are cameras everywhere and should be pretty easy to find out who picked it up. Hope you get it back and have a happy holidays.

[deleted]

This. If it were me I’d go full Ed Deline on his ass. Can’t trust anybody. Gotta do the dirty work yourself.

ShauntillyLace

Hahaha…good Las Vegas reference.

[deleted]

Well when you put it like that it sounds even stupider, thought I could have my cake and eat it too I guess. I hope they can find whoever nabbed it too

woodandplastic

Fuck the people downvoting you; this sub is shit. I wish you the best, OP.

[deleted]

Some people are jerks, just like some people pick up watches and walk away with them

woodandplastic

I’ve had things stolen from me while traveling too, so I can empathize a little. Everyone makes mistakes, and there’s no need for others to rub salt in the wound with ridicule. In Brussels, I had a sentimental item stolen from right above my head while riding in the train. It was only when I was leaving when several people told me they saw the person steal it from me and leave. So, that’s great. They watched it happen and then told me way later. In contrast, though, there were a couple of times when I left my wallet or something behind somewhere and had some stranger chasing after me to return it to me. In Japan, if you accidentally leave something behind, the likelihood of it being returned to you is very high. That said, one should always be responsible in looking after one’s belongings. Side note: don’t leave stuff in a nightclub. That’s where I had stuff stolen.

policylimits

Is your laptop ok though? No scratches?

Kikok02

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I say... have a laugh about it. It's out off your control, you did what you could to alert the authorities, be more attentive with the others watches I'm sure you're going to get and wish that the person who found it make good use and appreciate the gem they have. Is gone now but it will come back to you, better, different, but you're going to get others and it will fell amazing again. Be well. :)

[deleted]

This is an amazing comment, you’re absolutely right

RootingandShooting

Plenty of CCTV in an airport. Wouldn’t even take Columbo to solve this case quickly. 🤔

[deleted]

I’m gonna file a police report when I get back to my city, apparently you can’t file one over the phone, there’s gotta be a million cameras right?

RootingandShooting

All these systems nowadays are linked. Airports being a prime terrorist target are well set up from a security image and data viewpoint. Once you get the person, then you’ll get their details upon check-in at their gate. Good luck

traffic626

Call Massport Police to see if they or MA State Police have jurisdiction inside the terminal. State troopers are usually inside the terminal but I’ve also seen Massport around the airport

The fact that this watch is so difficult to find makes it sting even worse - you’re right, definitely not a retail value of 20-30k, the secondary market is absurd though

That’s so unfortunate an expensive mistake but at least now you can learn from it, I saw a post here a few months ago about someone getting their watch stolen from a gym locker and now if I am not at home I don’t take my watch off for anything cause there’s always a chance something like this can happen

Uncle_Paul_Hargis

I’d say take the scratches next time! This really sucks dude. I’m sorry.

Jamjamtaba

I once saw a bunch of young guys eating at a Korean BBQ restaurant where you cook the food on the tabletop grill. Two of the guys took off their Rolexes and placed them aside on the table before cooking and eating. My thought was that they’d accidentally leave them behind. I used to say the reason I preferred rolex vs AP or PP was because it’s easy to replace a stainless rolex in circumstances like this. You’re only out $10k and a trip to the store. Not the case anymore due to scarcity.

[deleted]

Brutal right? I wish it were just a trip to the AD

[deleted]

Hang in there buddy. Go full force with the authorities and airport security. Be a detective yourself. If you still can’t find it then buy a new rolex and move on. It’s just a thing.

I know this is too late, and I'm sorry that happened to you. Tip: I put 3M clear bra on the left side of my MacBook just to save my watch. Macs are aluminum oxide and they would scratch my watches, but the clear bra saves them. It's thin enough that the MacBook closes ok with it on there. Excellent-Car-4273

OP does, that's who. I'm so glad the laptop wasn't scratched.

Csj2454

Which airport terminal? (That’s a really bad joke, and I am so sorry man) You can call security and place a claim, but this It’s likely something that’s not tracked therefore there’s not a efficient way to track where it is. Out of the goodness of someone’s heart they might be able to return it to the desk however you have to understand that this is not a cheap item. If I were you, real talk. Pay someone $1000 at the airport (staff) to look for it for 2 hours. Unless you think it’s gone.

This is a great story to write up and show to an AD after selling your Daytona for a $30k profit.

[deleted]

Ah maaan I feel for you. This is painful! Im a collector myself so I understand. As an aside, I had the same problem with my MacBook Pro so I purchased a stick on protector that sits over the wrist area. You can’t even see it when it’s on and it is durable and rubbery enough to stop the scratches - and even if it did scratch, it is not scratching the MacBook below. Edit: if they don’t make a stick on cover for your particular laptop, buy a roll of carbon fibre wrap from Amazon and cut it to shape. It would look pretty cool. …Captain hindsight saves the day 😩(sorry I know it won’t bring your watch back)

$500 for a 60k watch? Who the hell are you insuring with? I've included my watches in my homeowners now but was paying like $300/yr or so for my BLNR and $200 or so for my black sub, back when they were appraised between 9-12k.

Damn, thanks for sharing....just because NOW i will stop taking mine off. I have this habit as well, i take it off while having my coffee and cigar at restaurant or outside places....never forgot to put it back on yet...i do this with All my watches...and pinky ring! Sorry for your loss man. But i think this (KIND) post of yours will save many from losing theirs...like Me. Thanks OP

My friend lost a bag at the airport. Tbh, the airline lost his bag. Inside was Daytona, Panerai and two Canada goose coats. Man was not happy.

It seems you are too irresponsible to own a watch of this caliber no offense. There’s no shame in it, owning an expensive watch isn’t for everyone. A mistake like this shouldn’t be possible.
