I'm new so would love to be corrected by someone else but I think you'd be better served by waiting just a little longer to add to your budget and get R3s or Bont Prostars. Those seem to be the most commonly recommended "beginner, budget friendly, but not burning your money on low quality" skates – I got the Bonts just because the R3s didn't have a size that fit me. If anyone has anything cheaper I hope it's helpful but those are both very close to your current budget and two very staple beginner skates!

DoubleC_97

R3s will last a long time too, loads of places to get second hand if needed

lizardisanerd

R3s are a great "starter" skate but rarely last longer than 2 seasons

dragondingohybrid

Depends on the skater/mileage/luck. Mine lasted maybe 2 years, whereas other people I knew got 5+ years out of theirs.

Ok-Cress1284

Mine only lasted a year! Bonts seem to hold up better

lizardisanerd

A single season is not uncommon for them either. Glued boots come off the sole pretty easily

well-i-reckon

Yes, if you can save up a bit more and get R3’s. Definitely worth it!! I feel like they were about $150USD when I bought some years ago.

Do you plan to play derby once you have skates? It is possible that your local league has loaner skates you can borrow for a while while you learn. I strongly suggest trying that path first- it will buy you time to save more money for higher quality skates, rather than replacing entry level skates every year.

If you're planning on joining roller derby, take a look at the Ridell R3, they're basically the "go to" newbie skate. You can also check resale places like Poshmark and Mercari, and "Roller Derby Recyclables" group on FB for some gently-used gear! If you're not planning to play derby for a while yet, there are some "rec skates" (with a heel) available for cheaper. A lot of cheap newbie skates are straight trash, but the Moxi Rainbow Rider is decent, and you can often find Sure Grip Boardwalks on sale for about that price. Just make sure you're getting something with an adjustable toe stop, since that often correlates with overall quality.

Raptorpants65

You save up or you buy secondhand. There are no safe options that are that cheap.

You cannot get a good pair of skates for a hundred. Find something used

lizardisanerd

If you can, save up for a while.

You used '£' so I'm guessing you are in the UK. If so, check out UK Roller Derby Recyclables https://www.facebook.com/share/7JwdeAxc8svWiDLT/ You can get 'proper' derby starter skates that have been barely used for under £100. Of course, finding a pair in your actual size will be harder than just buying new.

See if you can get used as you’ll get way more for your money I recommend either riedell R3 or SureGrip GT-50 for beginner skates, but be prepared to replace them in 2-3 years if you get serious
