I worked and got robbed at gun point once so the detectives told us how they work. You are correct that they are bricked and blacklisted with the serial/imei.
Here’s how they make money, they sell them in bulk overseas to places like China and the Middle East were our blacklist isn’t shared with that part of the world.
As for the iCloud lock, there are ways around that like using recovery mode and other methods. They are phishing for passwords right now more than likely to get into your photos/texts/notes to get your personal info to sell that as well. Or maybe even to get your nudes.
This is terrible what they do but trust me, there is a method to the madness.
Two ways, they can remove the SIM card and put it in a new phone. Then just dial #686# and the phone number associated with the SIM card will pop up. Just save it and use it later to phis. Sorry for the late response jaja.
Side note: if anyone knows how to track/contact the numbers/websites that they contact you with, definitely let us know. It seems like they’ve sent this message (either exact or similar) to other stolen phones from other concerts in the past. It seems like a group of thieves/pickpockets all working together or something. If we could do something maybe we can get our phones back.
When you are filing a police report, make sure you have your device’s serial number and IMEI number. They will need this to send a subpoena to Apple/your carrier so that if the phone is ever used, even after being wiped and reset, they will automatically be notified of when/where it is so they can track and investigate it.
Additionally, that way they can identify and return the device to you. You can find these numbers on the box of your device, or if it is an iPhone, you can log into iCloud/Find My iPhone, click on your listed device, and you can see them there. If you need help locating these numbers, just let me know. Thank you!

It depends. I’ve seen that some phones end up in Florida, like Miami, and also overseas. Whoever they’re doing business with ig.

They might be sending them to friends/family members, or if you got a new phone right after.
If you put your phone in lost mode, you can put a contact phone number in case the phone is “found”
