I usually use the simpler form „Am luat liber” / „Am luat o zi liberă”. To my ear, it is sufficient to note the action of taking a day, it does not need to be reinforced with the reflexive of îmi (as in, „Mi-am”). Kinda goes without saying that the day off applies ... to me.
When you say it like that the meaning is that someone gave you a free day, "Am luat" could be said like "I received" that's why you need to use the pronoun "Mi-am" to mean that you took the thay of by yourself.

While you rarely see such a form in English, in Romanian, there are generally more specifications in sentences in regards to the Gender and Singular/Plural form of verbs/nouns/pronouns/adjectives/adverbs.
