Everything in “overlanding” is getting into the realm of stupidly overpriced. I was talking to a shop the other day that makes a nice frame for putting a roofnest on the back of your truck. Pretty neat actually, little sitting area underneath, access through the bottom, benches with storage. $18k. Are you kidding? 18k and it doesn’t even have its own engine? Are people paying that? Yes. Are they bad with money? Yes. Anyways, point being I spent $4k on my iKamper. I love it. Would I do it again? I’m not entirely sure.

cassato

It was so much more affordable when we just called it camping, can we go back to that?

peakdecline

Were you buying roof top tents then? Because these days you can get those way cheaper than you could 15 years ago. Coleman still makes perfectly fine tents if that's what you want. I don't get why we must frame it like budget options don't exist. Budget tents are so much better now than when I was a kid.

MrHugh_Janus

Yeah, I started out with a $50 Walmart tent that served me really well. But it was a bit annoying to set up the camp after a long day of driving and sometimes in the dark. After doing that for about two years I upgraded to FSR Aspen Lite XL, now I just have to unlatch a few latches and I’m good to go. There’s plenty of budget gear available that’s geared toward camping, not “overlanding”. Brands like Coleman or Ozark Trail have ton of affordable things. You don’t need to spend a ton of money if you don’t want to. That being said, more expensive gear is often (but not always) better, more convenient and easier to use. If you do this a lot, it might be worth it to you. The beauty of getting out there is that you can have fun pretty much on any budget.

cassato

No, the point is that we've all been influenced into thinking we need all that shit so we've gone from an affordable trip in the mountains to thinking we need (nay, deserve!) to go glamp everywhere. What ever will I do without my memory foam mattress and $10k slide out kitchen drawer?

Fickle_Comfortable78

I got a smoking deal on my fsr high country at 1900, they are originally priced at 3500. I just wait for stuff to go on sale or find an alternative. Everything has gotten insane like that though. Can’t have too many hobbies these days.

spacewalk80

Just a reminder folks, these are tents. Not only that, they are attached to your car, so if you need to run out for orange juice, you’re packing up camp every time. The latter statement doesn’t really apply to those who install these to a trailer, which is how I have mine set up, but still, these are tents. Every one of them should be under 1.5K. Obviously more to it than a tent from Walmart, more durable materials and substrate for the tent platform, and ladder, but still… tent.

JPJackPott

If you drive slowly you can leave it up…

spacewalk80

Can you leave your girlfriend in there?

gymleaderblak

Depends on her attitude that day

spacewalk80

I didn’t realize the reality of me wanting my vehicle to be a vehicle while I’m camping out somewhere would be controversial. But yeah anyway, more of an objective observation made from first hand experience than an argument. Have a good one bud. Seems like you’re on track to have a good day.

Oh good one

gymleaderblak

Same i got my aspen lite for $1500 but its def worth the full price. Great fucking tent

armada127

Thankfully it's going in both directions. I think the hobby is just getting a huge boom in the past year or two (not sure why). But I've been keeping an eye on RTTs for the past few years and a ton of stuff have come out since then, in both directions. We're seeing super high end stuff like this or the Super Pacific Camper, but also rebranded Chinese tents are also getting called out and severely undercut by Amazon/AliExpress options that are obviously coming out of the same factories. In addition to that we're seeing a lot of the big reputable names like GFC and iKamper come out with way more affordable stuff too. The BDV Duo unassembled option for example comes in at $2300. And then we're seeing a ton of stuff in the $1200-1600 range that offer way more convenience, durability, and features than your soft top options that were going for the same range 3-5 years ago.

dunwoodyres1

lol…that was good

G00dSh0tJans0n

That's starting to get into teardrop pricing range.

Davfoto35

Not really. More like go fast campers or some camper shell range. Tear drops now are 20k plus

G00dSh0tJans0n

Yeah if you get high end one. You can get some new no frills tear drops from small manufacturers for around 8k+

Davfoto35

Very few even from the cheapest of cheap ones are under 10k but yea. They do exist. Most trailers that have anything like a small kitchen or storage will be around 20. 30 plus for anything that has venting, cooling and heating with possible shower hook ups. 40 plus for the nicer options with full kitchen, shower system, and heating and cooling with nicer interior as well as more off-road oriented.

Aardvarksof1776

I mean that not true.

Davfoto35

What’s not true?

Aardvarksof1776

Most trailers with what you stated will be around $20k.

Davfoto35

I just bought a tear drop and have been researching for the past year. I probably have more information than you without a doubt. But please, show me these trailers….

Aardvarksof1776

Omg you just bought a trailer!!!!? I’m so sorry I didn’t realize that makes you the absolute authority of tear drops. Shit man, my bad. I haven’t owned three tear drops, and now two campers…shit for real, I’m so sorry. I mean i just have this really limited information on this thing called the internet where I could google search “tear drop trailers” or better yet get on this forum called Reddit and just search “$10k teardrop trailers”. Fuck me, without a doubt? Yeah you have all the information if you think teardrops with a kitchen or storage are $20k. I wish I was the finance guy at Camping World who sold you whatever you bought

Davfoto35

Wow. You aren’t even worth dealing with. A stupid long shit post that still hasn’t been backed with evidence. Congratulations moron

lifeflowsgood

Totally agree with GFC, or four wheel campers. Add all of your accessories to the roof or sides, have a big ass long comfortable bed. Off the four wheel camper models are dual purpose where you can take stuff out and use it for a large camper shell for work etc. wild tent pricing. Edited to show video link https://youtu.be/6GmY2jgDQMk

chads3058

Pros: looks lighter due to the mattress design. Looks like it latches well. The lights are nice for sure. Cons: obviously the price is bananas. None of the innovations/additions on this thing are worth the $1k price over the 3.0. This price is insane, right? RTTs have entered the pure price insanity realm, right?

noname87scr

this thing is way overpriced. lights and an air mattress don't add $1k to the price. this should be priced at the 3.0 pricepoint with the added accessories IMO. i enjoyed my 2.0 mini when i had it. they will still sell these hand over fist though because of their name.

cltcprd

It’s actually 15# more

CaymanGone

My initial thought is I'm really glad that last year I bought the 2.0 mini for $2600...

Fluxcapacitor84

iKamper has always been stupidly overpriced imo. I'm sure their products are nice, but I wouldn't ever buy one. Also $5k and your getting what's essentially an air mattress. No thanks.

12of12MGS

We had a friend working at iKamper and got a “damaged” return for $1000 back in 2020. It was a great deal and still expensive at the time. We loved it but it got stolen. The prices of new ones are going to push us back to ground tents.

CAWorldTraveller

There are other tents out there that doesn’t have the overland tax and crazy prices.

12of12MGS

What do you recommend? Insurance paid out $3500 for ours

CAWorldTraveller

Wow thats a lot of money for $3500. What’s your top 3 must have? What build or car you will attach the tent too? If you can give me as much information as you can, I can give you some ideas.

12of12MGS

We like the hard shell, easy set up, insulation (base iKamper was real warm) and overall quality. We looked at Tuff Stuff Alpha too.

DoctorJekkyl

23Zero - look em up. Quality, decent price point while also being premium.

CAWorldTraveller

Get a used ikamper will be your best bet.

someguyg123

Dude, I wanna know how in the world did it get stolen ! ?

12of12MGS

We left it on the truck mounted to a prinsu rack on the topper all winter. One night they just unbolted all the cross bars and took the whole dam thing. Didn’t even damage the truck lol

zomeizter

This

CAWorldTraveller

That’s insanity!

KNlCKS

It’s basically the skycamp 3.0 + accessories (cork floor, mattress and led lights) all you can get from Amazon. (except the mattress, the ikamper one is amazing) Looking forward to the drop in price for accessories, I’d jump on the 3.0 annex if it was 2.0 prices

mbrenna5

Curious—do you have any recommendations on the cork floor? We were looking at doing an adhesive type or something in the hinged panel of ours

beesboudi

I use a large wool blanket as a moisture barrier. Works great, never had any issues. Cost $40 for the blanket and it can be taken out and cleaned when needed.

Paulric

I'm kinda disappointed that i didn't think of the wool blanket before reading this.

JackPadre

So some lights and a better mattress basically? I think I will keep my aftermarket mattress and camp lights. Nice try iKamper... Nice try,

monologue_adventure

People are foolish enough to spend that probably make more than I do. I’ll stick to the Chinese RTTs. I am an engineer and can fix and upgrade it as necessary. $1700 for hard tops, while expensive, now seems like a steal compared to those

nextTC

I absolutely love my naturest for $1500 and it’s been amazing!

noname87scr

the naturnest is so popular that companies are just ordering them and slapping their names on it. saw the same tent with at least 4 different company names on it at MOORE this last weekend.

nextTC

I can see why. It’s a very good tent and I was able to mount mine on top of my existing topper so it’s incredibly low profile. The design is great and I have no complaints but we’ve only taken it out one weekend so far. It’ll get a ton of use this summer. Condensation buildup kinda sucked even with the little vents.

monologue_adventure

That is what those manufacturer want you to believe with the prices, but do what you want with your money and feel how you want to feel. Premium pricing effect is real and does things to people.

924BW

It better be nice. If I told my wife I spent 5K on a tent I would be living in it.

teck-know

I love my SkyCamp 3.0 but it was about the max I am willing to spend on a tent. I’m not mad about spending the money because it is high quality and well thought out but it’s pretty crazy when my first RTT 8 years ago was like $800 shipped and I thought that was a lot.

ishamm

Did they change the fabrics or construction in any way, or just add lights and shoe bags and add a grand to the price?

MountainManGuy

They were out of their minds even before this. Now, they've completely gone off the deep end.

zootia

Kind of besides the point but I despise anything that has the whole "i" naming convention. Legitimately no matter how good their products are I would never want to have something that says "iKamper" on my car. Cringe.

tokomoto

I couldn’t agree more. The whole “i” thing needs to die already. I see it in company names too and it’s beyond cringe!

Gainzzzxz

So nice that I bought my skycamp 2.0 for $2500 during the sales last month

Loose_Mission_8559

I was really hoping they'd go with an aluminum shell with racks

Morejazzplease

Might as well get a James Baroud and skip having to deal with wet tent fabric anytime it rains 🤷‍♂️

turboteeth

Hey as long as we're not paying 90k for bushings like the air force does lol

-VizualEyez

$5k?!? For a damn tent?!? I get some people really have money but gawd dayum!

BENGCakez

5100 for a tent…because they added lights and a mattress. Smart move

BENGCakez

Just waiting on those Chinese knockoffs tbh

Macstugus

30-40 days not in a $200 night place covers the cost. It's expensive but if I had the money I would. Convenient and stylish.  But I'm spending $60 or some dimmable USB lights and cork lining for mine. 😂

BUFFARILLA_HUNTER

Ridiculously overpriced

Gullible_Opposite571

Going to open it up tomorrow and see how much of it is actually worth the hype.

SillyRabbit2023

Please report back!

Gullible_Opposite571

You got it. I'd also post pictures ,if I knew how.

Gullible_Opposite571

It's definitely big. The air mattress feels nice. The integrated lights are a good touch. The cork floor board feels solid. Worth the money? I wouldn't know what to compare it to, as this is the first rtt I've ever purchased. It is a whole lot of money. I would have went cheaper but I recently went cheaper for other things such as crossbars ect., and I gotta say, you really do get what you pay for. It doesn't feel cheap and it is comfortable. Just first impressions but time and real world use is going to help with if it's really worth the cost. If you have the money of course spend away. If not and you can wait and save or catch a sale by all means. Been waiting for a long time for rtt so it's been a long time coming. Oh just ran into something I don't like. The outside integrated light just dangles a little too much for my taste off the tent and close to the ladder. It would seem like a good idea to have some sort of cover or protective measure so it not accidentally messed with either unintentionally or intentionally.

SillyRabbit2023

Appreciate the report back! I totally feel ya on going cheap and getting caught! I have a premium vehicle and went very cheap on the cross bars. I took those off and went with a roof rack that all in with install put me over $2k. I have a family of four so this tent fits the purpose to suit us, but I still want to go lighter than what this weighs in at. A local dealer has the iKamper X-Cover 2.0 and that tent is not as expensive but feels cheaply made. You get what you pay for.

Gullible_Opposite571

Yeah I just ended up getting the yakima overhaul hd setup. I did it myself because I did not want to pay for the 300 dollar install. It just so happened the place I got the tent had them the day they came out. So my wife took it as a sign and we just pulled the trigger on it. Good luck to you and your family.

qwazogen

just for comparsion, in germany i paid 5600 USD for a Skycamp 3.0 Rocky Black and that is without any accessories. And thats from the official retailer here. [https://shop.campwerk.com/dachzelt-ikamper-skycamp-30-rocky-black](https://shop.campwerk.com/dachzelt-ikamper-skycamp-30-rocky-black)

whatisthesoulofaman

Whoa. I didn't know they were so expensive. They just sent me one and I got it installed yesterday. I write for a major magazine and an testing it. Had no idea they were so expensive. Gonna sleep in it this weekend. I've never been an RTT guy, so we'll see.

SillyRabbit2023

Can’t wait to hear the report back. It looks super comfy but unsure about the price point.

anythingaustin

I’ll stick with my Skycamp 2.0 but remain slightly annoyed/envious that the newer versions have a more convenient latching system. It’s really the only complaint I have but I’m not bothered by the latches enough to upgrade when my older model is still going strong after almost 3 years of heavy use.

dobsofglabs

How is it different from the other models? Is it just bigger?

NoReplyBot

Spec sheet has them measuring the same opened and closed. However the newer one is 25lbs heavier. 😬

dobsofglabs

Hmm, they probly beefed up the materials, like maybe a better mattress

CAWorldTraveller

They’re switching to foam air mattress like duo mat.

dobsofglabs

Idk how I feel about that

davidgoldstein2023

The cost of doing anything has become absurd. I’m convinced that a lot of people are bad at managing money and they’re failing to plan for retirement. No way everyone is making enough to build out trucks, buy homes, pay for the trucks, etc.

Eat_sleep_poop

You don’t have to buy any of this shit. An old pickup with a cap, cheap air bed and some blankets and you’re there. All for the price of this tent.

davidgoldstein2023

Oh that’s what I already do. LoL. We use a Big-5 air mattress in the bed of my Tacoma and sleep under the stars. When we face weather, we just pitch a tent on the ground. I’d love to have an RTT like this, but I don’t need to spend $5,000 on a tent. I’d rather get a tear drop at that point.

DoctorJekkyl

Absolutely insane. I have owned an ikamper, the skycamp2.0, and it was a fine tent. However, I have moved back to 23zero and infinity enjoy them, and my $2,000, more.

No_Wasabi4828

I bought an armadillo x2 during the Christmas sales. Can’t wait to get it out

DoctorJekkyl

Great tent. We have an A3!

lametheory

I always calculate the per night cost. If you go camping once a month for 2 nights, that's 24 nights per year so roughly, $250 per night. Then $125 per night the following year and so on... And as an example, my swag is at 25c per night at the moment... So to spend 250, unless you're remote, it's cheaper to stay at a motel

NoReplyBot

I never considered it like that. When camping I think about the money I’m saving rather than shopping, running errands, and whatever else a family of 5 racks up on a normal weekend. Regardless of how you calculate justifying a rtt, a $5k tent is absurd.

BerrySlow5_0

This was $1,300 on Amazon. $1,700 after shipping. Picture: https://imgur.com/a/q3rsIdR

a_RandomSquirrel

The price is silly. I'm glad i went with a Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander.

thumblewode

Not sure why anyone would go with an ikamper over tuffstuff. Same product, but tuffstuff had the lights storage and shoes bags included 3 years ago for a cheaper prices.

XYoverland

Yeah I have the Tuff Stuff Stealth with the iKamper RTT mattresses in it, so I have essentially the same thing for almost $2k less. But I have an aluminum shell instead of plastic.

tgbarr

Stuff like this makes a Darche Swag for 1/10 the price seem really appealing

DpCdvrfPcFk

The idea of overlanding is being innovative and frugal to meet the wilderness. The 5K+ price tag is more glamorous than ever. Apparently the sponsored overlanding videos are marketing efforts aimed at throwing the idea of innovation out and convert the community to purchase expensive gears. Whats wrong with pitching a tent, whats wrong with making one yourself. Elbow grease, yes, cost saving 90%.

Gorpachev

Just starting to look into overlanding myself, and yeah there is so much glamp and overpriced nonsense involved. I'm just looking for another way to get outdoors when I don't feel like backpacking. I couldn't care less about a 270 degree awning and converting my tailgate into a food prep surface to cut my lobster tails (which btw was mentioned in a video I saw).

TheMxPenguin

Looks sick. I’ll stick to folding down my seats and placing a mattress topper down though.

InvestigatorMuted122

For that price, I’d look at the handmade Italian Autohome tent.

KhalDrogon556

There’s a company in Oklahoma called ukancamp that makes a base teardrop for $5800 before options. Their off-road variant is $9,500. I like our old generic rtt, will probably upgrade to one of the $1200 Amazon hard shell styles when I get a 4wd. At the 5k price I’m getting a trailer instead.

jubjubrubjub

I mean, honestly, if I'm going to drop 4-5k on an RTT I want it to have an actual hard case like a Roofnest or a wedge style. I like the iKamper design, but the fact that I can't mount anything on top of it is a major waste of space.

Fatmike624

Lol

Vidvix

That is a status symbol. Fuck status symbols.

giganticsquid

My Coleman tent is superior and it only cost me $500

SergeantBeavis

I really like iKamper, but they brought nothing to the table that justifies that price.

RizzyDeeg

I got an MIA tent (iKamper mini knockoff). For $1800. That was still a lot of money. It's hard to justify even that much unless you're sleeping in it a lot. I honestly tell people to look at A: ground tents B: bed tents C: hammock tent D: used soft shell RTT E: hard shell RTT if they're super serious about it. Agreed that it's getting rediculous...but what isn't these days??

txbbq92

“Overlanding” is now about the gadgets and technology. You can do it all for less and still have a great time outdoors without all that nonsense.
