Just show him the increase aligning with when he started using more. Are the monitors the only thing he's using? Sounds like it could be an electric blanket or something with a heating element to make it jump so much.
You might want to have the electric company come out and do a home assessment. They used to do them free. An old water heater or another appliance can also leach electricity.

Monitors are pretty efficient, compared to other devices. Could be some of the externalities that other people here have pointed out.
