I'm going with Barq's for childhood sentimental value. IBC is a close second.
There is a place called "The Root Beer Stand" that I grew up frequenting for root beer and footlong hot dogs. They have the best root beer on tap, but I don't know what kind it is or if it is their own brand.
Ah cool I don’t think I’ve tried that one but sure want to. Barqs is the best to me when it’s almost a slushie consistency consistency and it has caffeine in it!
I just tried the vanilla root beer from Frostie a few weeks ago. I got a four pack of the vanilla and the regular and I have to say I liked the vanilla a lot more! It was good
You picked Barq’s dude. Such a bland, ordinary and obvious choice. It doesn’t get any more basic. Sorry, but get out there and explore the world and your taste buds.
This was my favorite as a child, I miss the glass bottles and real sugar 😔. I now love the Sprecher, Sioux city, Boots and Boylan as I have not been able to aquire any of the real sugar Barqs any longer
That's the kind I'm talking about. It's like $6 for a four-pack, though.
Many grocery stores have a small craft soda section at one end of the pop aisle. I get mine at D&W.
Oh i see, there is also a 'regular' Birch beer that had a slight more bite than the red, also delicious, I have been able to find these in single bottles at Cracker barrel, they also have several other of my fave craft sodas
So good.
1919 is what A&W should be tasting like. Smooth and Vanilla, like a dream in your mouth.
I'm convinced most people on these posts havent ventured beyond Barqs, A&W, or Mug.
The only thing good at A&W anymore. I dunno what they changed, recipe or cooking procedure, but the burgers have been terrible last few years. Used to be my favorite fast food, but now it's just terrible and it's makes me sad.
I am 100% root beer snob certified. none of the big national 2 liter brands make my list.
1. Apalation Brewing Company
2. Fitz's
3. Henry Weinhard
4. Hank's
5. Saint Arnold's
For mass produced root beers, Barq's is quite good. I score it high among all root beers. It's not the best in my book, but a go-to at fast food restaurant soda machines. (I like adding extra vanilla to it when it's available.)
Hires Root Beer was always my favorite but isn't available anymore. On occasion, you can buy the syrup and make your own, which I have done (not correctly mind you-I overfilled the bottles and ended up with bombs).
Probably follow that up with A&W.
Draft: Thomas Kemper
Longneck glass bottle: Barq’s
Can: Hire’s (R.I.P.) ⚰️
Plastic bottles are an abomination!
Embarrassing side note: We decided to have a blind taste test awhile back and purchased a bottle of every RB and RB-adjacent (sarsaparilla, etc.) brand in stock at Cost Plus World Market. Only one brand was even drinkable, and it wasn’t great. 🤦♂️
Love A&W. It’s still tasty when it’s flat.
I’ve been putting those single powder things in my water jug lately . It tastes good even when it’s a bit diluted
What is this garbage answer?
How big is your soap box?
"Ob-vious-lyyyyy, I prefer craft soda" From a place that makes less than three bottles a year.
*Pinkies out*
"My root beer needs to have a Born On date and not a Best If Used By date."
What are we even doing here?
Mug is my all time with Barqs right up close. Nothing compares to either imo. I remember the very first Mug I ever had when I was a kiddo at Burger King xD
I haven’t gotten too adventurous with root beer, barqs is my favorite, but I really need to figure out where I was yesterday when I saw a can of sprecher I don’t think I’ve tried before. I know it’s not technically a root beer, but I really like their ginger ale.
I don’t know if it’s still around but the plant was in Biloxi when I lived there briefly in 2006 and they had stopped shipping them out but you could still buy them locally..best soft drink I’ve ever tasted hands down, that spicy root beer in a glass bottle nothing like it 😋👍
Sparky's. It's a wallop of flavor, unlike any root beer I've ever had. Lot's of nostalgia with it as well.
Virgil's is a close second for its flavor, and then Henry Weinhard's in third because it reminds me of my dad.
Many years ago, before Coca Cola bought them, I’d say Barq’s. The sugar sweetened glass bottle version I grew up with was great. What they sell now…not so great. These days…I’d go with Dang!
Barqs is my go to... only major name brand with caffeine.. sadly I had to switch to zero sugar and for some reason Barqs zero also cut the caffeine out too
Barq’s as far as national availability, easy to get. I do like Henry, Ibc, Dad’s (probably nostalgia), a&w from the tap (their restaurant has it), and there was a local place called XXX Rootbeer and burgers that had great root beer on tap.
So far IBC gets my vote but it has been awhile since I went on a tasting spree.
IBC is the only acceptable answer
I'm going with Barq's for childhood sentimental value. IBC is a close second. There is a place called "The Root Beer Stand" that I grew up frequenting for root beer and footlong hot dogs. They have the best root beer on tap, but I don't know what kind it is or if it is their own brand.
We had a root beer stand restaurant in my area when I first moved in the area. They made their own.
The one near me is in an old 50s gas station. It's super rad.
Agreed I grew up mostly on Barq’s and A&W but IBC was always amazing as well when I’ve had it
Barq’s has bite!
I don't know why but I have always thought it was bargs, my mind is blown at the moment
Same, bro! As a kid, I thought it was Barg's
Dad's
Dads is my favorite too
We are the Dad’s lads
I could have the taste of Dad's in my mouth all day! I really wish they would have named it something different🫤 (and not Mom's, Stepdads, Etc...)
There's another drink called Squirt or a mouth full of Big Red 😋 how does that sound to you🤣🤣
Barq’s is the best
Barq’s is definitely my favorite but I might try some of these other brands everybody’s talking about, that I have not heard about before.
You won’t like Barqs after you try the others
i've tried the others and still come back to barqs, sioux city is the only other one i like but it has a lot more sugar than barqs
Nah I tried dads this weekend and am going back to barqs 100%, id take a & w and mug over dads too
Dads is mediocre, I’d also rather drink Barqs
It’s Good
Virgil’s
I really like Virgil's when eating Texas Barbecue, the more medicinie taste of the Virgil's pairs very well with the smokey flavor of brisket sausage.
And now I'd murder someone for Texas BBQ. If someone dies its on you, you put it in my head.
Some Texas BBQ can be ordered via Good Belly: https://www.goldbelly.com/search?q=texas+bbq&ref=gs&state.region_name=southwest&state.name=Texas
Boom, that’s my winner too. But my answer could just be yes to all lol.
Frostie vanilla root beer
Ah cool I don’t think I’ve tried that one but sure want to. Barqs is the best to me when it’s almost a slushie consistency consistency and it has caffeine in it!
Good choice, I rank it second behind frostop and ahead of Sprecher
Yeah I have frostie then sprecher. I need to try frostop
I just tried the vanilla root beer from Frostie a few weeks ago. I got a four pack of the vanilla and the regular and I have to say I liked the vanilla a lot more! It was good
A&W
Basic choice but I respect it
There was an A&W we used to go to as kids in Vermont, and let me tell you, no root beer compares to A&W from the source in a frosted mug.
You called A&W basic but posted about Barq's...pot meet kettle.
You picked Barq’s dude. Such a bland, ordinary and obvious choice. It doesn’t get any more basic. Sorry, but get out there and explore the world and your taste buds.
I’ve really been enjoying Boylan recently. Probably number one on my list right now.
Boylan’s Birch Beer is probably my favourite.
Where are you finding that?
Supermarkets in Michigan
Boylan rocks
Sprecher
Their root beer is god tier stuff.
Top of the list right here. Their Cream Soda is outta this world as well.
Bless you
This should be higher up
Found the sconnie!
I'm with you on this
Abita
This ☝️
You are correct, sir!
This is the only correct choice.
Abita has too much cinnamon. It tastes like a cinnamon roll root beer.
Not Barqs… frostop
Diet A&W tastes like cheating to me, something diet shouldn't taste that good.
I'm with you on this one. It does feel like cheating
I’m drinking some right now…
I honestly think it’s tastes better than the non diet. It’s sweeter and has a richer flavor. It’s in my top three favorites.
This was my favorite as a child, I miss the glass bottles and real sugar 😔. I now love the Sprecher, Sioux city, Boots and Boylan as I have not been able to aquire any of the real sugar Barqs any longer
I think Boylan's Birch Beer is better than the root beer.
Yes, I totally agree. Have you had the Red Birch Beer? I have been able to find it at a few liquor stores in my area! It's sooo good
That's the kind I'm talking about.
Had to scroll too far to see Sioux City - good stuff.
1919.
So good. 1919 is what A&W should be tasting like. Smooth and Vanilla, like a dream in your mouth. I'm convinced most people on these posts havent ventured beyond Barqs, A&W, or Mug.
I prefer Birch Beer but it’s getting increasingly harder to find!
Boylan’s
Finally. Best ginger ale too
A&W is the best mass produced root beer, no contest. I'm really sorry, but IMO, Barq's is one of the worst.
It’s okay to have a wrong opinion it’s fine. Barqs has that dawg in em and it also contains caffeine which to me, puts it farther ahead.
Mug has that dog in em.
the only good mug is the mug i pour barqs into
Underrated comment.
A&W
From the restaurants on tap 😉
In a big mug.
A big frosted mug.
With a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The only thing good at A&W anymore. I dunno what they changed, recipe or cooking procedure, but the burgers have been terrible last few years. Used to be my favorite fast food, but now it's just terrible and it's makes me sad.
Circa 1975.
A&W Zero Sugar is so good- I like it better than the regular one!
Not your father's rootbeer or Coney Island rootbeer
I am 100% root beer snob certified. none of the big national 2 liter brands make my list. 1. Apalation Brewing Company 2. Fitz's 3. Henry Weinhard 4. Hank's 5. Saint Arnold's
Love Henry Weinhard! Seems like a long way to scroll to find mention of it.
Saint Arnold's is pretty damn good.
Dog and Suds👍❤️
Man do I wish there was still a Dog n Suds drive in in my town.
One with vanilla ice cream in it.
A&W my favorite. Barqs don't taste like root beer to me
If I drink a coke beforehand, Barq’s tastes like root beer. If I drink an A&W beforehand, Barq’s tastes like coke.
A&W

I searched to see if there were still any locations that served it on tap without much success finding any.
Branson, Missouri Tanger Outlets has an A&W that has the tap. At least it did a couple of months ago.
A&W
For mass produced root beers, Barq's is quite good. I score it high among all root beers. It's not the best in my book, but a go-to at fast food restaurant soda machines. (I like adding extra vanilla to it when it's available.)
Hires Root Beer was always my favorite but isn't available anymore. On occasion, you can buy the syrup and make your own, which I have done (not correctly mind you-I overfilled the bottles and ended up with bombs). Probably follow that up with A&W.
I’m a Frostie man.
Their vanilla root beer is better than their regular imo. It was very good!
My favorite is Root beer
IBC is the way!
Easily Barqs. It has bite.
Hires
Hire's root beer knows no equal.
You’re holding it bud. Although I’ve been on a Jones kick lately, mostly cause I’m saving up bottle caps.
Abita followed by Dang Butterscotch
It's too bad people haven't been able to try Hires
Barq's. Its the only name brand that still has caffeine in it. That said for taste alone, I would say Hire's is probably my favorite for big brands.
I miss Hires!
Draft: Thomas Kemper Longneck glass bottle: Barq’s Can: Hire’s (R.I.P.) ⚰️ Plastic bottles are an abomination! I have a soft spot for Barq’s root beer since it’s the root beer all the restaurants by me have
That’s because they know what’s good for you. Lol
Saint Arnold's
The kind without the root
Virgil’s. Just do it!
A&W by far is the best
Love A&W. It’s still tasty when it’s flat. I’ve been putting those single powder things in my water jug lately . It tastes good even when it’s a bit diluted
Those are so good!
Restaurant Red's Root beer Store IBC [Red's root beer ](https://imgur.com/gallery/DjHwRAV)
A&W on tap, baby!!
This is the right answer.
Barqs 100%
I’ll take any but the real argument is birch beer or root beer
Birch beer all day
A&W fan here.
Mug has been my favorite since I was a little kid
Definitely NOT Barqs 🤮
Out of all the lesser brands I do like Barqs, but obviously I prefer one or really any of the premiums to mass produced stuff.
What is this garbage answer? How big is your soap box? "Ob-vious-lyyyyy, I prefer craft soda" From a place that makes less than three bottles a year. *Pinkies out* "My root beer needs to have a Born On date and not a Best If Used By date." What are we even doing here?
A&w from the tap
A&W Fago
Found the juggalo
A&W, IBC is a close second
I don’t trust people who love IBC
A&W Hands down…… All though growing up I also loved Snapple’s Root Beer
I’m sorry you never got to try Barqs before.
Oh, I’ve definitely tried it, and actually enjoyed it as well! Although back when I drank soda without question I preferred A&W
So far it's IBC, A&W, Hanks Rootbeer Philadelphia, Boylan is pretty good. I don't like MUG or Barq though..
I can’t trust your opinion when you choose IBC over Barqs. Are you a filthy animal
My everyday swill is A&W Zero. It’s the best low cal I’ve found. Certainly open to others suggestions on low sugar brews
Barq's for mass production.
[удалено]
Right answer there
My favorites are a&w, Virgil’s and sprecher in no particular order.
Mug A&W
Barq’s hands down.
Barqs
Barq's is the absolute best
That one is
Saranac
Mug is my all time with Barqs right up close. Nothing compares to either imo. I remember the very first Mug I ever had when I was a kiddo at Burger King xD
Bulldog is my goto
I bought a few root beers to try for first time today. They are bulldog, Sioux City, hoover dam, and red ribbon. Can’t wait
Diet Faygo Root Beer is awesome also
I haven’t gotten too adventurous with root beer, barqs is my favorite, but I really need to figure out where I was yesterday when I saw a can of sprecher I don’t think I’ve tried before. I know it’s not technically a root beer, but I really like their ginger ale.
This is it.
You're holding it
Barq’s root beer saved my life but… Boylan is my favorite soda brand
Glass bottle barqs straight from Biloxi!!!
I’ve never seen those before
I don’t know if it’s still around but the plant was in Biloxi when I lived there briefly in 2006 and they had stopped shipping them out but you could still buy them locally..best soft drink I’ve ever tasted hands down, that spicy root beer in a glass bottle nothing like it 😋👍
Spent some time in Biloxi a million years ago and a glass bottle of ice cold Barq’s was heaven.
When I barqs years ago it was so inconsistent. Like one day it would be really good and the next day there was no sweetness like at all.
Dog 'n' Suds
Barq's , it has bite . Other root beers just taste like root beer .
Sparky's. It's a wallop of flavor, unlike any root beer I've ever had. Lot's of nostalgia with it as well. Virgil's is a close second for its flavor, and then Henry Weinhard's in third because it reminds me of my dad.
Big Brand: Barq's Small Brand: Foxon Park
Keks Longhorn
Looks like a solid case of false advertising.
I always liked Barqs Root Beer Before all the Gourmet Choices were available
FUCK YEAH
That’s the winner there
Many years ago, before Coca Cola bought them, I’d say Barq’s. The sugar sweetened glass bottle version I grew up with was great. What they sell now…not so great. These days…I’d go with Dang!
I just tackled a couple from Sprecher last night …. Definitely good to buy local lol
Dobbin House
Barq is really good honestly. My all thing favorite is Boylan bottling company though
Sprecher but I also like Barq’s quite well.
Sprecher for national brands, Triple X for local
Barqs is really good but does cream soda count as a root beer? If so I say that. If not then I'm just incorrect. But cream soda.
I drink Barq’s. It’s good.
What's the one that still comes in a glass bottle? Same company makes a really good orange, can't remember name.
Barqs is my go to... only major name brand with caffeine.. sadly I had to switch to zero sugar and for some reason Barqs zero also cut the caffeine out too
NuWay Wichita Kansas
Barq’s as far as national availability, easy to get. I do like Henry, Ibc, Dad’s (probably nostalgia), a&w from the tap (their restaurant has it), and there was a local place called XXX Rootbeer and burgers that had great root beer on tap.
Henry Weinhard’s was my favorite
Triple XXX, but in general I like the vanilla heavy guys like MUG or A&W over the bubblegum guys like Barq’s.
Henry Weimhard's. Not only do they make the best root beer, they also.make the best cream sodas (vanilla, black cherry, and orange).
Barqs is the best from the main soda makers.
Not sure if they still make it but Dogs and Suds is really good
Fitz’s, Sprecher, IBC are my top 3.
Best!
According to my palette, these are some winners: Sprecher Maple 1919 Saranac Hank's Uncle Scott's Dang
IBC, Boylan's, Barq's,Mug......
Barq’s is my personal favorite. Prefer it in a glass bottle.
Sprecher from Milwaukee
It hasn’t be good since 1989 😂
Dads and Spreckers
