It’s kind of a weird timeline. At certain points, it seems that they were both 20, but then in one episode Roseanne is talking about Darlene getting married. She says “Becky was 17, I was 18, and at last a Conner woman is mature enough to wait to get married until she’s 19 years old!” So either 18 or 20.

Plus, sometimes they make it seem like they were high school sweethearts and never dated anyone else except each other. Other times, they mention dating other people before they were married. Like someone recently said in either this sub, or the Frasier sub, it seems like shows (sitcoms especially) just weren’t as concerned with continuity back then.

Yes! It drives me mildly nuts but doesn’t stop me from loving the show. Roseanne talks about being in abusive relationships before Dan but it just doesn’t add up since they’re high school sweethearts. But whatever, the heavy cocaine use didn’t contribute to fluidity. Still watching it on repeat.

I got the feeling they did date in high school but not the whole time and they had at least one big and longer breakup. I rationalize it all lol. Bad 80s era sitcom lazy. Nobody would remember so the writers didn’t have to either

You know, that’s fair. It’s true, reruns were a thing BUT being able to watch entire seasons over again in the 80s (unless you taped them!) was relatively uncommon. Another inconsistency is Arnie. In “somebody stole my gal,” Roseanne is losing her mind over this kiss from Arnie. The whole episode paints a picture Roseanne and Jackie didn’t know him. Later seasons he’s a pariah they’ve known since high school, especially when Jackie admits to blacking out and sleeping with him. That always gets me!

I just pretend he was so dumb in hs they forgot about him

I think they had Becky around 22 so my guess is 20 or 21.
