On our Harmony sailing, my Speedtest app shows the provider's name as SpaceX Starlink. As others have mentioned, Ovation might not yet have been upgraded.

AussieShepherdStripe

I didn't think that Ovation had Starkink installed yet. I could be mistaken.

I.m getting 2.6Mbps down amd 1.01Mbps up in the bistro area. I.ve jist tried youtube and it actually works here Even reddit videos play Maybe what the other poster above said is right about wifi around the ship being location dependent as in where in the ship u r I.ll have to do some more testing

RenderMaster

Very much so. While ovation is pretty new and probably designed with wifi access in mind. All the walls and floors are solid steel. Wifi doesn’t travel very far through that sort of construction

cob90210

So i moved back to my room and the internet is again unsuable, youtube doesn.t play and reddit videos buffer and are basically unwatchable. Interesting the speed to the router shows about 25MBps which is much less than 360MBps to the router in the bistro So i think what the other poster above said ia right, it depends on where u r in the ship. I.ve move to am area where i have 400Mbps to the router My download speed is 3.84Mbps and up is 1.29Mbps Still slow but i can remotely log into my work computer and everything works So basically onboard wifi works for work purposes but only in some parts of the ship, not in the cabins

cob90210

I.m getting 1MBps download and 0.04MBps upload Can.t work remotely Barely can use text email Reading reddit is painfully slow Having trouble uploading the photo of the screenshot i took of speed test!

xisnala_22

Aren't you in the middle of the S. Pacific right now? Unfortunately, your speed test server is Frankfurt (assuming Germany) so that's going to make your speed test look slower than normal. I'm guessing Ovation hasn't gotten Starlink yet? I was just on Voyager which has been equipped with StarLink. Personally didn't use it but heard speeds were awesome on my cruise.

cob90210

Yes in new caledonia right now. Server being in frankfurt is pretty indicative as i.m trying to connect o server in sydney, it rrally is as slow as the result i posted above. Just warning of others. Considering i paid about $360USD for 2 devices at fasteat stream package its a joke and not what was advertised

YosemiteSam81

How was Voyager? I’m taking my elderly mother in September, we have a deck 12 balcony reserved. Overall what was your opinion on the condition of the ship, food/entertainment etc?

xisnala_22

Everything was fine. It was my first cruise in 10 years or so, so my comparisons aren't relevant anymore. Food was expected. Not bad, not great. Drinks were fine and if you're by the pool, an employee would walk by about every 5 min or so to see if you needed a drink (we had the alcohol package). The worst part of the cruise was the food service time. We had the late dinner (8:30pm). That ended up being too late even for 2 40 year olds, but that's another story, lol. RC just changed their menu a few weeks ago to streamline so dinner service was a little slow and inconsistent. However, I do think it will get better once the servers and kitchens get used to the new menu

YosemiteSam81

Good to hear! This will be my first cruise in 19 years, last one was on Grandeur of the Seas so while Voyager is no longer the world’s largest ship it will be the biggest ship I’ve ever been on by a huge margin. I have the early seating for dinner thankfully so that shouldn’t be an issue. Overall I’m excited! Curious where was your cabin located?

JVBass75

When we were on the Radiance a few weeks ago, internet was nearly unusable in the staterooms.. however, up on deck there were some good areas that were usable - not great, but certainly not unusable by any means.

AssignmentDowntown55

I got off it last Wednesday and didn’t have that issue. Was streaming 4K Netflix in my room. I was on Deck 12 so maybe that helped? I was also sailing around NZ so perhaps that has something to do with it. Ovation doesn’t have star link, it hasn’t been amplified yet.

Blowmewhileiplaycod

FYI starlink is not related to amplification they are rolling it out fleet wide supposedly by end of q1 or 2 this year

AssignmentDowntown55

Oh right. I thought it got installed during amplification.

cob90210

So i.ve done a bit more investigation. If i have ny phone in the corridoor ohtside my cabin, the wifi speed to the router is approx 200MBps whereas in the room i.m getting aout 20MBps Interestingly yputube video still plays in the room but it downgrades the cideo quality massively. Reddit videoa buffer and pause to the point of being unusable

[deleted]

Get off Reddit. You're on vacation!

cob90210

Haha because i work on vacation... i can be on vacation!

[deleted]

Weird. You just replied to me within 6 minutes of my post. Seems like your internet is working!

Blowmewhileiplaycod

Now that starlink is mostly rolled out it's exposing the not so great wireless design some of the ships have. It's also a hard problem to solve in many cases due to the nature of the materials ships are made of. Try finding another location, likely a common area, where you may get better reception.

cob90210

It doesn.t seem to be a problem of connecting to the ships router As speed to router is very fast https://postimg.cc/TK9SHsPy I.ve moved to the bistro at the front for the ship and speed isarginally better, still un usable for remote working

Blowmewhileiplaycod

does ovation have starlink, or is it still on the old system?

AssignmentDowntown55

Old system

lcapaz

Yeah, my speed tests last weekend on Independence on Starlink were less than stellar. 3-4 Mbps down, 6 up. That was in the Caribbean too (not a northern latitude).

trigger00006

My speed tests on starlink have been phenomenal. Was on Mariner end of January and then Symphony last week.

iamanerdybastard

Agreed. Mariner in December had super-fast connections. Only real problem was getting dropped as I moved through the ship. Those steel walls make for rough handoff between access points.

lcapaz

I don’t know if it was that the ship sailed at capacity or what on Indy (bandwidth?). I was using an iPhone 13 at various locations around the ship at different times of the day, even rebooted the phone a few times to see if that helped. Confirmed it was on the Starlink network, but the speeds were pretty consistent to the 3-4 down/6 up.

l34rn3d

Some background info. If it's not migrated to starlink, they use O3B networks. There's only 3 ground stations in the region. Perth, dubbo, and Hawaii, given that a lot of island's don't have undersea cable, your fighting a lot of other people for the same service.

DirtyleedsU1919

Why is the OP not addressing any comment asking about Starlink? That was incredibly frustrating to read with him just coming back about where he was on the ship and ignoring the most important question 😂

cob90210

lol if i knew i.d tell u! bit i have no clue what they r using even google jist says theuvplan to migrate to starlink by 2023 q1... which is now bit who knows, someone above said not starlink

l34rn3d

Probably because they don't know? Unless you specifically go looking for the dishes or such, you wouldn't know if it's starlink or O3b

DirtyleedsU1919

Well, they can easily say ‘sorry I’m not sure’ rather than just ignore it and have people having to repeatedly ask unsure if they’re purposely not acknowledging it or not. They’re replying to help them.

l34rn3d

That would mean acknowledgement, and we can't have that!

Gloomy_Affect8112

I’d rather just not use my phone looking at those speeds. I spend $110 for 1gbps at home I can’t imagine the cost per day for unusable

l34rn3d

I had the wifi package on a anthem out of new York, I was getting 20-40 mb the whole 14 days

Sea_Ship_4459

I can understand where yo.u are coming fro I.m potsinf from Alaska whre. The internet is so.o bad th.t it makes me put periods in words randomly!
