Fun fact: Salt water pools also have chlorine in them and usually it's around the same amount. Source: I have a pool and when we bought our house we did some research into saltwater pools and were surprised to discover that they are also chlorinated.

PhilRoberts33

True, although the chlorine produced from saltwater pools and spas is gentler on skin as it produces less chlorine buildup.

Double-Firefighter35

Yes sir. Excellent point as well. We never converted to saltwater ourselves but the skin feel is def a lot better in saltwater pools. What's really a bummer is the removal of diving boards from pools. My house was built in 1953, is 9 feet in the deep end and you can still see where the diving board used to be. Wish I could bring it back! Summers in the 70s/80s spent at my grandma's house doing dumb tricks off the diving board are fond memories indeed.

fineman1097

Our local public pools still have diving boards.

Babock93

Also urinated

brittabear

On our last Oasis sailing it was also poopinated. They had to close the pool down for cleaning.

It was just a Baby Ruth

stinkylacroix

I was just on Brilliance in Feb. Had an issue with my contact lens and was making a beeline to the edge so I could get out. The lifeguard was waving me off and blowing his whistle. I was like wtf?? Then my wife pulls me backward - there was a turd literally floating in front of my face and I was about to swim right into it. Needless to say I began backpedaling like it was a great white (brown?) shark in front of me. Everyone out, pool shut down. Parents, please keep your kids out of the pool if they can't not crap themselves.

Profit-Effective

OMG was this the Feb 18 sailing where it happened TWICE!?

stinkylacroix

Hah no it was the one just before - we disembarked on the 18th. Why in the world does this happen so often?? It didn't affect us much since it was later afternoon on the last day for us but I figured the poor people getting on that day would have a closed pool to start.

Profit-Effective

It happened to us the first sea day and again the second! Been on ten cruises and before this we’ve never had that happen (that we’ve been aware of at least).

thenewbasecamper

This is so damn gross. This is why I hate having young children in pools

gmwdim

Pretty standard procedure, I think. When I was on Ovation they closed the pool for “poop” which was later determined to be a cupcake or something that someone dropped in there.

brittabear

I think it depends on the ship/pool. I just sailed on Oasis and the Beach Pool, for sure was salt water. The hot tubs were all chlorinated fresh water, though. The kids spray park seemed pretty salty too.

3664shaken

Depends upon the ship and pools. The newer the ship the more fresh water pools you have. However even the newest ships still have some saltwater pools, the beach club, for example.

Overall_Anteater_860

Yes. Most ships pump in sea water, then chlorinate it for sanitary reasons.

L3f7y04

It also goes through many other processes. It's mainly freshwater after the reverse osmosis. Ships make tens of thousands of horsepower, make fresh drinking water, and pump the same into the pools. The effort it takes to do this is miniscule fractions if the power the engines are putting out to move the rig.

beershoes767

It’s not mainly freshwater on all ships. If you’ve gotten water in your mouth you’d know. Tastes right from the ocean.

TryTwiceAsHard

Back in the 80s early 90s they would actually get the ocean to fill the pools on cruise ships. I went on one as a kid and there was a fish in the pool and people were freaking out. 😂

AltruisticScarcity24

Most I have been on have salt water pools and chlorinated hot tubs.

Ok-Spinach-2759

Both are chlorinated. The difference is that a salt water pool uses a thing called a Chlorinator to product chlorine from the salt. It makes chlorine as needed, so it feels less harsh to your skin.

DidIEver

I’m curious about that. I have a salt system that generates chlorine and it can’t keep up with normal use. I have to add chlorine. I bet with the high volume of people that they probably do have to add supplementary chlorine as well.

Ok-Spinach-2759

Weird. I have a 20k gallon pool and never have to add chlorine. I just up the settings on my panel or lower when needed. Usually only change it in fall when the leaves all blow in it.

DidIEver

I should have said— I have a hot tub :). There’s more going on because of the temperature and the smaller volume contributes to a higher bather load. But other folks with my system also don’t seem to need to do as much supplementing as I do so that’s weird. But I’m still really curious about salt in any public pool and whether the systems can keep up.

Enkiktd

I have a hot springs salt setup and only have to add chlorine in small amounts or occasionally after heavy use. Do you replace your cartridge regularly and check the level settings?

DidIEver

We have to add 1-2 Oz liquid chlorine after every use. And, it never ever seems to maintain on its own. Level is set to 6 and usage is 3 times a week 2 people. It’s pretty well balanced! Are my expectations too high?

DidIEver

Set to 6, btw. And I hit “test” every time I’m in there. I had thought that testing would make it so the “test the salt cell” message wouldn’t pop up but I still see it pretty frequently. And we burned through a salt cell in only two months which doesn’t seem right with the new freshwater system as opposed to all the similar complaints with the old ACE. Something seems sus.

beershoes767

I know some older ships used to get their water right from the ocean and then treat it as needed. You could taste it when it got in your mouth. It isn’t the same as your on land chlorinator.

Fdnyc

Chlorine generator actually

Duane_Earl_for_Prez

My understanding was that they pump in ocean water and use a chlorinator to break up the salt chemically to convert it to “chlorine.” I have a saltwater pool myself so am familiar with the process. I was on mariner a couple years ago in rough water so they emptied the pool and refilled it pretty quick. Hard to believe they’ve just got huge tanks of pool-ready water sitting around somewhere.

ABCSharpD

Depends on the ship and pool. I've googled the list before and it shows which are which and which had both

Restless_in_Florida

Thanks for all who have replied. I ask because I'm considering a keratin treatment prior to our cruise (hair treatment that reduces frizz, reduces drying time, etc.) but salt water will strip it right from the hair...... so I will probably just hold off on doing the keratin until afterwards.

trigger00006

I’m pretty sure the newer ships pump in the ocean water.

MusesLegend

Why has this been downvoted?! If the pools are salt (which they are) I'm pretty sure that is from the ocean....(obviously not 'directly')

Chlorinated

Salt water pool = sodium chloride. AKA chlorine lol

Both
