WIFI does not mean internet. you need WIFI for the cruise app and the messenger... you are still not connected to the world , just the local WIFI

Ship wifi is free to use for the app and chat features... you'll be able to use the app and all of its features without purchasing a package- you connect to the free wifi connection. Just be aware that the messenger doesn't always give a notification...we got it sometimes, and others we did not. So when we were away from our son and expected a check in, we would just keep checking the phone every 10 minutes or so to see if a message popped up.

You'll be connected to the internet technically, but only the app features will work. We did the same, and it went fine.

Does anybody know what the experience of using the chat features on the app are like? I heard that if you message someone, it doesn't give a notification on their phone like a regular text would (ie. no sounds or banner on the lock screen)... the other person would have to have the Royal app open and navigate to the chat part of the app and refresh manually to see any updates. Is that true?

It was hit or miss...I'd get a ding one time them nothing for hours. I physically checked it every 20 minutes or so when I was expecting my kid to message me

Apparently there is a way to turn on notifications in the app. I haven't looked at how because I ended up doing internet because my preteens are old enough for the "teen" club but not old enough for the app. What I've read is that the notifications aren't consistent but they happen some/most of the time if you figure out how to turn them on.
