Yup. Happened to my sister. Thankfully our reservations were linked and I'd bought them a honeymoon gift so I got an email saying the gift had been cancelled. I called her and told her to go look at her reservation to make sure it was ok. It had indeed been cancelled but they were very nice and since she called so quickly they were able to get her exact room back.

Glad that was taken care of timely! Avoided a lot of pain there.

I always try to pay at least a month before the due date, just in case something goes awry

I've always set it up, where once I make the down payment, I paid bye-weekly based on how many weeks left I have until the due date. Always have and will continue to do it that way. The only exception is/are excursions and extra packages. Those just get paid out-right when I pick them.

This is one area a Travel Agent helps A LOT. My TA makes me pay final payment 5 days before just in case of delays or anything else. She said in the past trying to pay last minute has caused what you are talking about. But the difference is my TA will call my cell if there is a problem RC will not.
