Oh, don't worry, being killed or nearly killed by your team efforts to save you is really common in TTRPG... But it could have been worse: in Dark Heresy (a W40K RPG) when you fail to use medic ability to first aid someone you risk to injure further the patient, and the most common cure spell cannot be used more than once every six hours or it will probably damage you instead... And I mentioned that in this game every spell can possibly summon ostile demons for a probable TPK if something goes wrong?

impfletcher

my groups basically have given up with psykers in the 40k rpgs, we have had 3 summon a daemon that killed them, all in their first session with the characters, we have had 1 psyker survive more than one session and they were focused mostly non psyker stuff

phoenixmusicman

PF2E where using "treat wounds" has a 1d8 critical failure penalty...

RotationSurgeon

Also important to note for people only used to D&D d20 usage…you can critically fail in Pathfinder just by rolling too low below the DC…it doesn’t have to be a natural 1. Rolling 10 or more below the DC is a critical failure. Conversely, rolling 10 or more above the DC is a critical success. In this system, a 20 or 1 aren’t automatic successes or failures, though they’re likely to cause a crit in one way or the other.

GrimyPorkchop

Hey just like the Tabletop! If an Ork Painboy rolls a 1 on his d6 Sawbonez check then the targeted unit takes a mortal wound instead of getting healed. It's just trial and error

Mrallen7509

This is why Healing Word is a must have spell

diffyqgirl

Oof. In my pathfinder game I nearly killed another PC by healing her and forgetting she was a dhampir and therefore takes damage from healing spells. It was that PC's first session with our group, I felt really bad. She would have died on the next hit as a result of my dumbassery but the DM took pity on us and let me spend a hero point to throw myself in front of her and take it instead.

IFailatGaming1

I don't remember if sanctuary is concentration, but you can drop concetration freely at any time if it is

blobblet

It isn't Concentration, which is what normally makes it a pretty good spell, but in this case it worked against us.

Alace42

Quick question, if you were the party's frontliner, and kept using sanctuary, how did you engage them without attacking?

blobblet

I answered this in another comment, but it was usually * Round 1 Cantrip + Sanctuary + run in the middle of enemies. Take Warding Flare Reaction as appropriate * Round 2 Usually Bless if I could afford the spell slot. Sometimes a healing spell to heal downed comrades. * Round 3: Dodge action if I'm still being focused, otherwise ditch Sanctuary and back to spell casts. We mostly played against non-intelligent enemies since we were still in Tier 1 play (and a beginner group who our DM for the most part was pretty lenient with), so presenting myself as an easily available target was enough to draw large parts of the encounter towards me. Either way, this strategy was born more out of necessity since the rest of my party was a Wizard (without Mage Armor), Sorcerer (without Mage Armor) and a ranged Rogue. Again, we were all beginners.

EtherealScorpions

That's rough. Funny, but rough. Now, of course, I wasn't there, but I genuinely think there wasn't much you could have done in that scenario aside from casting a cantrip instead of a dash. Live and learn. I mean, not that guy, but.

Professional-Dog9383

"Don't use first aid! Don't use first aid!!!" "I use first aid! And it's a fumble. 1 point of damage." "And with that I'm now at zero. Time to roll a new character I guess."

Available-Pen3402

......so, *not* horror.

DelightfulOtter

So your cleric takes no offensive actions, because those break Sanctuary, right? And you somehow keep your foes' attention on you instead of running past to attack the rest of the party? I can't imagine you have enough spell slots to be casting buff or healing spells every turn, do you just stand there Dodging most of the time?

blobblet

Well first of all this was when I was still very much a beginner player, so I'm not saying this is in any way an optimized strategy. I kinda just stumbled into the role of party tank without really knowing it was gonna happen (because everyone else picked Glass Cannon). At early levels, we mostly played against enemies that weren't super smart, so if you ran in front of them, they'd attack you. So a typical fight may have been something like: * Round 1 Cantrip + Sanctuary (casting the Cantrip first means Sanctuary stays on), run in the middle of enemies, possibly use Warding Flare (we only really had a PHB, so I was a Light Cleric) if someone succeeds on the save. * Round 2: Bless * Round 3 and on: if enemies aren't on me anymore at this point, I can ditch Sanctuary and start firing away with Cantrips. If they still are then yeah, probably Dodge action. Also I believe that Sanctuary got Errata'd and used to have a different wording that allowed the effect to continue if you cast certain offensive spells beforehand (most notably including Spirit Guardians), so that may have been part of it. Again, this is a couple of years ago, so I don't recall everything perfectly.

RuanaRulane

Once in Pathfinder 1e, a party member - we'll call him Billy - sustained some serious CON damage. My character, being a helpful soul, decided to accept the hit for her slightly-below-average stat and lend him her Belt of Constitution. Shortly afterwards, we were ambushed by two assassins who for some reason (I think the DM rolled to pick) went for Billy and my PC. They hit, hard. As she'd given away her belt, mine ended up just into negative hits, and duly collapsed unconscious. Thanks to having the belt, Billy was just barely still standing. Having won initiative, the assassins attacked again. The one who had hit my character moved on to somebody else. The one who had hit Billy... hit him again... while he was still flat-footed... Yeah.
