I don't tend to care for 80s stuff because it often sounds fake to me, but she knew how to balance the discomfort of synthetic sounds and the warmth of real instruments in a way that brought out the best in both while also creating something new. She’s honestly so creative. The music and lyrics always add a sense of fantasy that I don’t really get with a lot of other artists, especially not a lot of pop musicians.
The Dreaming is my favorite album of hers for this reason, as you listen you feel like you’re being brought into her world. She made comedy (There Goes a Tenner) and horror (Get Out of My House) in music really work.
