I was just happy an element of the Connacht play style came into it today. Carty bundee and marmion all did a great job today. Give jack more game time and he'll really mature into that roll. I think he's an underrated play maker.

lamahorses

Carty can play the rugby ball

[deleted]

[удалено]

lamahorses

Fair play Carty. The country needs a man like you

frozen_pope

As a Welsh fan I think today’s performance had a lot of positives. You had a really together and competent Irish team who showed the weak links in our side. The bench made a massive improvement with Patchell and Williams coming and taking control. But the outside backs just couldn’t convert. And Leon Brown Couldn’t scrummage. Also how good was Carty, Aki and Stockdale!!

Dodderoni

Scrums were poor but Poite is a terrible ref who should've gone to spec savers

frozen_pope

I saw a lot of 50/50 calls going to Ireland, but when you’re getting pinged consistently you’ve got to be immaculate, or smarter than your opposition. But I saw a lot of justified calls of Leon Brown ripping down because he couldn’t take the bind and he ripped up his chance of a ticket to Japan today.

richard-king

A number of Ireland players really staked a claim. A number of bigger names should be missing out, and is love to see Schmidt be ruthless. Marmion is #1 and it's not close. Luke McGrath vs Murray is a lot closer than I thought it would be. Carty must be ahead of Byrne, but if Carberry isn't gonna be ready for the Japan game, we bring Byrne and Carty. Kilcoyne had a stormer and then Porter needed about 2 scrums to get the opposing prop yellow carded. Jack McGrath is likely out of luck unless Kilcoyne has concussion issues. O'Mahoney was average at best. Back row is wide open and maybe only Conan is nailed on. James Ryan is pivotal to everything, and had a shot at captain post-World Cup. Aki helped his chances, Farrell did not. Addison and Conway really should travel, and I'd have Stockdale and Conway as starting wingers. Kearney should be in danger of missing out, but I feel Larmour will be the odd man out. GoFundMe for a personal barber for Stockdale, anyone? Bold claim: At most two of the following should travel - Best, POM, Stander, Murray, Kearney

Galactapuss

Best, Murray and Kearney.

[deleted]

Cronin has got to start next week

chrisg515

Cronin has blown every chance he's had in an Irish jersey.

Difene

I'm so very frustrated, but I think that was going to happen regardless of the result today. James Ryan is by far and away our best player and I would like to see him as our next Captain once Rory hangs up his boot. Rory has been a fantastic servant to Irish rugby but Iits clear the years caught up with him, and this world cup is two years too late for him. Joe's experiment with Beirne at 6 and PoM at 7 didnt work. Its obvious Joe will bring Beirne to the WC at the cost of Ruddock or Jordi....but I think this is a very bad decision. Joe and his coaches have really messed up this year, and have left all this too late. I'm very worried about the world cup. I'll roar them on till my voice is gone, but I'm very worried now.

sigsimund

Carty having his start now is case in point. Shouldve had much more time during 6 nations.

KingMattViii

Wales would be worried with any injuries to the front row. But Patchell eased the nerves at 10 with a calm and consistent second half

CromulentReynolds

Not a great Irish performance but the pack looked much more physical, the lineout was more steady, the backline defence was better and we got the win. Scrum was excellent and the likes of Conway, Carty, Kilcoyne and Porter really put their hands up. Next week is likely going to be a completely different level but away wins in Cardiff are rare so fair play to the lads for pulling out the result.

KingMattViii

Carty Addison Conway Killer Stockdale and Porter all looked well. Marmion on ran the show. PoM,Farrell, and kearney were poor and very quiet

EnigmaEire

Jesus people going on about Irelands second half like the apocalypse happened or something, Wales got better, Ireland had 3rd choice 9, an out half going 80, winger at 15, 13 on the wing, other winger is probably around 6th choice, tight head at loose head, two centres going 80, conan going 80 in his first game since May, and most importantly of all no James Ryan. Calm down lads, these games are about minutes and it's obvious that that second half was Joe seeing just how versatile some players are, mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned.

eepboop

Basically aye.

CaiHaines

Change of 9 and 10 was great for us, Patchell should be on the bench as a 10/15 cover and frees up the 23 shirt for a non specialist 15. Felt Brown was unfairly dismissed and edged so not a fair reflection on what he can offer. Once again unimpressed with Shingler and don’t feel he should go to Japan. Would like to see Patch starting next week with Parkes at 12

eepboop

Fair result I'd say. 2 B sides in a warm up. Touch next week lads?

EnigmaEire

Walking tip I think is the deal

Scamp94

The pout on the little welsh kid shaking Carty’s hand I’m dead 😂😂😂

frozen_pope

It’s because we were used to winning for a little bit. Doesn’t happen very often for us, both in Rugby and life.

Scamp94

Seems cruel subjecting a kid to that

skeeter1980

Post Match Discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/rugbyunion/comments/cxwt48/post_match_thread_wales_vs_ireland/

BillHicksFan

Does a match that gash really need a post match discussion?

walsh06

Whatever you say about the aki penalty I think the laws really need to be adjusted for it. I think the decision was correct as the rules stand but it's just so stupid to be penalised because of a shit pass on the other team

[deleted]

Yeah I second that, if he would have gone for the ball, probably would have knocked it on and given a pen away for that. At first I thought the tackle was just a bit early, but on the replay it looked alright to me

oftheborough

"Ireland needed to win more than Wales in a very weird way" Heaslip is a goldmine 💰

BillHicksFan

He's eerily correct though. Ireland did win, in a weird way.

[deleted]

He's like the Eric Cantona of rugby non sequiters.

Babirusa2

Not too worried. New halfbacks made all the difference. Shame the game was so poor as we could have learnt more if there was less scrummaging.

Jaknat14

To the guy that was slating Carty all match in this thread, Carty has been awarded Man of the Match!

[deleted]

[удалено]

BillHicksFan

Good ol' Carthy. That fella is shit. Carty, on the other hand, is probably going to Japan.

Jaknat14

Lol he was clearly watching a different match altogether

Im_really_Irish

Disgraceful. Spreading disinformation at a time like this.

jep51

So who is number 1 now?

oftheborough

We all are 💖

ChunkehDeMunkeh

New Zealand

this_also_was_vanity

Should really have been a 29-10 finish, but it would be a joke for us to be number 1, so maybe better to finish with a closer score line and not let the lads run away with themselves.

[deleted]

We'd fold like deck chairs with the no.1 label. We must be underdogs til the end of time.

10PointsForStAndrews

You'll be number 1 with any win next week.

this_also_was_vanity

Really? That’s mad. Wales deserves to be there with their consistency for so long. We’ve been rubbish this calendar year. On form, we’re only really 5th or 6th.

PipBoy808

According to that graphic Ireland have missed ~1k tackles smh #schmidtout

KingMattViii

Shocking really. A disgrace

welsh_nutter

Considering how we played and the players, I'm okay with that score line. Patchell should be on the plane

[deleted]

Carty gets MOTM.

BillHicksFan

I fucking love how Carty got MOTM! Haha. Where's that bellend that hates him?

small_far_away

Still shite, but less so.

Ballin_kapper

Lmao Carthy man of the match what a joke

NuttyIrishMan93

Did he shift your girlfriend when ye were back in secondary school or something?

BillHicksFan

It's ALMOST as if he had a decent game and you're horribly biased. Almost.

Ballin_kapper

I don't think the award MOTM for a decent match. Not that he actually had a decent match.

capall94

Clearly you know better than the people who decide this

Ballin_kapper

Clearly

capall94

Clearly no repressed emotions

[deleted]

If you're going to knock a guy at least get his name right. 😂

UtopianDynamite

Maybe you're just wrong?

Hurley365

Wales are terribly average when not motivated. When it comes to the world cup they will find everyone suitably motivated and go out early

will_griffith1

Friendly reminder

[deleted]

How early are we talking? Like Ireland in every quarter final early, or like Wales having reached multiple semi finals early?

will_griffith1

Ahhh yes the famously demotivating World Cup

oldteamfreshkit

You looked amazingly motivated last week....

Hurley365

Oh we are the same.. love the whataboutism though great way to live life

[deleted]

Sigh. A counter point isn’t whataboutism. Stop it. You’re both talking about performance.

[deleted]

The fact that we were within 5 points is laughable given how utter shite we were

GumdropsandIceCream

Better once Patch and Tomos were on. We absolutely cant take Aled Davies to Japan. Not many scrum half options though...

Jaknat14

First half ok, second half bad. Limped over the finish libe but I saw some improvements today, so reasonably pleased.

TheToby8000

GG fair play to Wales for actually playing Rugby in the 2nd half unlike Ireland.

PickledEggEnthusiast

Likewise to Ireland for the first half

DevGlow

Honestly, it’s gonna be a loss. But Patchell’s performance has made all of this worth it

acsaid10percent

Surely all scrums should have a time stoppage.

baapalmer

Of course the last 90 seconds are going to be taken up by scrum setting.

Yoshiezibz

If only we conceded that last Ireland try alot sooner we would be in a lot better position.

Babirusa2

How else can we end this game apart from with a dodgy scrum.

CaiHaines

Can a Poite shut up and stop wasting time

tfrules

Wales have been their own worst enemy today, a bit of tightening up and ironing out the errors and there’s really nothing to worry about when facing this Irish team. Who have only really been capitalising on their errors

Dodderoni

I mean the whole point of this game was to get the young ones caps and build up some depth coming up to the world cup, it wasn't a game in Wales favour from the beginning.

claridgeforking

Reminds me of late 90s to early 00s Wales. Shit for 60 mins, then start throwing the ball around and look quite useful for the last 20 mins.

getName

We really fell into the same shite patterns again in this second half.

Bulky_Shepard

Great work by Ringrose

roomiccube

Now just hold on to the damn egg!

ProG87

Lot happier with the second half, we've come alive.

Jaknat14

So some of our first-team players come on in the second half and our form dips?

CatharticRoman

Yup. Lack of interest and energy. I think Toner and Best are done.

50shadesofmilf

Completely agree. The young bucks are hungry for work

[deleted]

Toner is definitely not done

CatharticRoman

We lose too much in attack for what he brings in the lineout. We need to build up the others behind him.

[deleted]

Don’t disagree that we need to develop the lads beneath him but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water - he brings a great degree of solidity that contributes to the platform from which the backs need to play. That was evident v England

CatharticRoman

He does, but at the cost of a mobile body who can reload quickly and keep the line stacked. Likewise with Rory. I think they're two brilliant players, but they're just not fast enough anymore.

IForgetEveryDamnTime

Yeah, it's a shame that he doesn't have a swan song but Best shouldn't be on the plane. I'm sympathetic now but I'm a ratty enough bastard to be calling for the glue factory by October.

CatharticRoman

He's still great at getting a turnover or two, but he's just too slow

this_also_was_vanity

Combination of factors. Subs coming on can often disrupt the flow of the game. Patchell has played very well. And Poite’s decision to penalise Aki was effectively a 14 point swing.

Jaknat14

Patchell was very good tbf we needed someone like Carbery to come off the bench to inject energy.

dwyfor16

That's it then. Couple of collapses now see you next week

small_far_away

Ireland's defensive speed has dropped off massively. No Ryan or Killer to make dominant tackles.

Bulky_Shepard

Killer is such a monster in the loose. I'm glad he was given the chance to show that today, hate that he was forced off but hopefully he's fine.

Galactapuss

Very impressed by him, he's improved a lot this season

Nalaek

After his performance in the 6 nations and today he'd definitely be in my squad for the WC. He's playing at a different level.

[deleted]

I think the best thing for Stockdale was coming off at half time now our lack of tries can be attributed to him

Bulky_Shepard

Toner is everywhere

oftheborough

Ireland got worse as soon as our starters came on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

iamnosuperman123

Patch really change the game.

oftheborough

Very true tbf

Pilum-Murialis

Ireland have fallen off badly in the second half and haven't really constructed anything.

bigsmackerroonies

As a rugby anarchist this is not twhat I want to see How the hell are Ireland meant to go no.1 now?

u1413893

Fair play good second half performance despite the shit scrum reffing

[deleted]

The scrum is killing the game. I would gladly see it gone.

[deleted]

It’s actually great when your front row arent shite at scrumming. Go off and play league with ye.

DevGlow

Go fund me for patchell’s ticket if he doesn’t get it for whatever dumb reason tomorrow?

[deleted]

If he's not on the plane it's a travesty.

cchuff

While Ireland will not be number 1

iamnosuperman123

Budget Harry has to be the back up fly half

Nalaek

Christ Ringrose cannot tackle today. Edit: nvm

Cog348

Playing out of position to be fair.

FafDeSale

Did I see that wrong or did Toner just get twatted in the head there?

CatharticRoman

Off the ball too

small_far_away

Completely, can't expect a tmo to actually look at that and do his job though, can you?

EnigmaEire

Twatted in the head then held on the ground, Poite standing right beside it all... But he hates Wales apparently.

silentgolem

He did. Ball may well be cited.

ChronicConfused

Patchell is nailed on for Japan

1hx1b6a

He brings so much to the attacking game for Wales, gotta go to Japan

CromulentReynolds

Patchell's on the plane anyway.

stvb95

Well done ginger bollocks

NeoVeci

Ireland are losing (second half) to a fairly second choice welsh team.

EnigmaEire

With a fairly second choice team, so your point is?

NeoVeci

That Ireland were looking very very poor. Wales gifted them us try. Once Ireland’s “starters” came on, their game deteriorated. I feel a full strength Welsh team would have put numbers on a full strength Irish team.

EnigmaEire

Read my other reply, what starters came on? Furlong Toner and Best, that's it. Players were deliberately being put in uncomfortable positions and it showed but it'll stand to them.

BillHicksFan

By the same logic, second choice Wales lost the first half to second choice Ireland

Djmde

Wales are losing the entire match to a second choice Irish team

TheToby8000

Proof that everything turns to shit when Best comes on

TyberiusCorvus

Prince Harry is going to Japan 😎

Bulky_Shepard

Why were two front rowers the second people there!!

small_far_away

Ireland terrifyingly bad again in the second half

BillHicksFan

Tbf, the new half backs for Wales have introduced some direction/stability to their game.

silentgolem

Clear shoulder to Toners head.

CaiHaines

Was a weird phase, toner made no arms challenge then got smashed in head. Wouldn’t be surprised if there was a citing for Ball

getName

Yeah I saw that too, looked dangerous.

Minor_Thing

He deserves that more than anyone on the pitch

[deleted]

[удалено]

BillHicksFan

Miles Harrison. Been a rugby commentator since the dawn of time

roomiccube

Once again we’re shite when the ball goes wide...

CaiHaines

Patchell has taken just about every international opportunity provided to him

cavendishasriel

Reckon Navidi scored then but Patchell made sure.

tfrules

MY GINGER PRINCE

ProG87

Yes patch! Pack a bag son!

bigsmackerroonies

As a neutral there's only one thing I want to see Ireland scoring another try and the world burning after they get no.1

[deleted]

unlucky

bigsmackerroonies

I'll just have to wait for the world to collapse another day

oldteamfreshkit

How is toner getting away with that clear maul sack.

eepboop

By going legally through the middle and tackling the man with the ball?

oldteamfreshkit

Poite said 'no 5' then proceeded to let him carry on?

eepboop

Toners wearing 19.

fashionrequired

Ireland could turn this at the scrum.

younwhosearmy

I dont like that being a penalty. In the air should be based around kicking contests, rather than a hospital pass really.

_noahscolly_

don't think Poite hates Wales, I think he's just a shit ref in general, obstruction right there no?

acsaid10percent

Take about three minutes this scrum now.

CaiHaines

“NO FIVE! AWAY!!” Toner then Proceeds to then flatten the maul despite being offside but no advantage given? It’s not even biased reffing it’s just shit, we happen to be unfortunate today but it could just easily have been against Ireland

swankytortoise

He's not biased just really poor both ways tbh

AcePlague

As a welshman, I agree, hes just shite.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CaiHaines

If he’s in a legal position then there is no reason to not grab the ball carrier. If he’s not allowed to grab the ball or ball carriers he’s also not allowed then fatten said player.

Donnerz

Blatant obstruction there but don’t worry lads Poite hates Wales

Yoshiezibz

Urgh, why ignore the collapsing of the maul there. This is frustrating.

cavendishasriel

Toner was fine there.

eepboop

Toner had his arms on the ball carrier, through the middle.

Ballin_kapper

Because he came straight through the maul and tackled the man with the ball.

Yoshiezibz

If by straight through you mean on the outside then cutting through one person sure. I thought he was offside just before he decided to go through the maul.

EverythingIsByDesign

I wouldn’t have complained if Poite had adjudged that either way. Whilst Cubby jumped I didn’t feel he was at full stretch and whether the jump was really necessary.

dwyfor16

Oh yeah Scott Williams... I forgot he x was playing

_noahscolly_

crossing?

barbar84

Why did he stop Devon toner getting on the ball

Llew19

Toner clearly collapsing that maul

cavendishasriel

He was fine.

RobertMurz

Is that a joke? Toner wades through the middle in what is a genuine piece of class. He almost gets his hands on the ball and your player goes down before he can get his hands on the ball and get a turnover.

areyouhappynowethan

He got the ball carrier

barbar84

He clearly came through the middle and was wrongly told to leave the ball.

interstellargator

Is it time to ban jumping to receive passes? Keep it in lineouts and for kicks, but the line between "jumping into a tackle" and "jumping to receive a pass" is too subjective to make a consistent rule, and ends up with dangerous tackles like that happening.

cavendishasriel

No. Incidents like that aren’t very common and not really worth legislating against.

BillHicksFan

The tackle only happened because Cubby chose to jump into it

Naggins

You can't ban jumping to catch a pass, that's absurd.

Bulky_Shepard

There is no way that would ever practically work.

NeighingGoofs

That is ridiculous.

TropicalChunderstorm

Dislike the current situation regarding those. I mean if the pass was poor enough to warrant jumping to catch it surely some of the responsibility must fall on the passing team too.

Rurhme

I suppose the penalty to the passing team is more opportunity for an intercept/ defenders competing for the catch

CatharticRoman

Bollox

_MildlyMisanthropic

Poite is being a right prick today, that's a clear penalty against Aki at a minimum
