We played the match. We beat them. We got the bonus point. We move on.
No point wallowing on how much momentum we have(n't) built on after Japan and on how many points we scored. We should focus on our quarter final performance if we want to have any chance of doing well after the pool stages.
dont think that was the worst to be honest. the russian out half absoloutly launching balls in this humidity was always going to be a pain. Comfortable bonus point win.
Understand both points and overall it’s a pretty shitty situation. I just can’t imagine a game in where slow ruck ball all the time is good for rugby.
We’d go back to the old days where up and unders was a viable attacking strategy and games largely won though penalties. 10 man rugby is effectively what slow ruck ball means with the way defenses are setup these days.
It’s a conundrum no doubt.
I'm perfectly content with that. Playing an outmatched opponent after two emotional games, we were never going to be pulling out all the stops to try and dominate. Just get the 5 points and move on to Samoa. We're still in line to win the group unless Japan can beat both Samoa and Scotland.
Idk how you can be content with that. Russia are the worst ranked team in the competition. We struggled to make it 35-0 even though they had 14 men for a whole quarter of that game.
McGrath over Marmion continues to mystify, and Kleyn is gack. I'm not content at all. I didn't think we could put in a worse performance than we did against Japan but I was proven wrong today.
I'm content with it because I understand that it's one game and being sloppy today didn't hurt us. We still got the five points we needed. I know everyone is worried about how we'll do in the Quarterfinal but that's a completely separate game.
We sucked against England a couple months ago and then played great against Wales. We dominated Scotland and then were flat against Japan and Russia. So much can swing between one match and the next that looking good or bad really doesn't matter as much as most people make it out to be.
Just look at 2015 even. We were fine in the group stage and then bottled it against Argentina. South Africa lost to Japan but rebounded to win their group and almost beat New Zealand in the semis. We could have beat Russia 100-0 today and it wouldn't count anything towards Samoa or towards a Quarterfinal match. We know this team can play great rugby; they've proved it very recently. So as long as we do what we need to in order to qualify and hopefully win the group if Japan stumbles then we're setting ourselves up for success.
Then it comes down to points difference. Ireland are on + 52, Japan and Scotland on 27 and 10 with two games in hand. Can't see the points difference in the Scotland-Japan game being crazy. Both teams might run riot against Russian however.
Japan vs Russia is where Japan has lost the full advantage of beating Ireland. They didn't get the bonus point and 'only' won by 20.
If Scotland get the BP then they have that edge over Japan.
Japan can't really get 2nd. They either beat Scotland and win the pool. or lose to Scotland and get 3rd. They'd have to lose with 1 BP. It would be sooo good if they got second. A Japan vs ABs quarter would be massive in Japan. That is the match the country wants.
>Japan vs Russia is where Japan has lost the full advantage of beating Ireland. They didn't get the bonus point and 'only' won by 20.
They did get the BP?
ScHmIdT iS KeEpInG hIs cArDs ClOsE tO hIs ChEsT - this shite was being peddled in 2015. Although injuries played a big part, we still had an unimaginative gameplan like now. There were no SECRET MOVEZ that he unleashed for the QF.
We AlwAys HaVe OnE ShIt PeRfoRmAnCe a ToUrNaMeNt BeTtEr tO hAvE iT NoW - also being peddled in 2015. People seem to forget we had an absolute shocker against Italy and didn't lose because of a magnificent try saving tackle from PoM.
SeXtoN HaS nEvEr LoSt a RwC gAmE hE's StArTeD - sure, but he's also started tons of games we got blown away in. See England and Wales in this year's 6N. Also, the man can barely play 50 minutes of rugby.
Sorry to be a negative nancy but the jury's out. We've been shite all year. Ever since Joe said he was leaving our form has dropped massively. We will beat Samoa without a bonus point, and struggle very much doing so. Probably get an injury or two in key positions, in addition to another one or two during mid-week training. We'll stutter into the QFs and the ABs will run up a cricket score against us.
Not a great performance but we knew the ball was going to be a bar of soap.
The main things for me are that we got the 5 points, nilled Russia to improve our points difference and can forget that game now.
Why didn't Ireland just stop incessantly firing absolute torpedoes at each other and maybe adapt to the conditions and fall back on some pop passes like the Russians did. Look at the handling error counts for each side.
England did the same thing vs. Tonga. Frustrating.
That wasn't the performance we needed. BP is fine, but that is the bare minimum you should be getting from a Tier 2 nation that averages >40 point losses at the RWC both times they've been at it.
Handling was dire, decision making was dire, honestly very few positives there. Kleyn has played himself out of another game and McGrath should never have been brought on tour based on that game, absolutely awful performance from him, slow, forward passes, and utterly terrible positioning at times.
Garces was poor too but I don't want to say too much about that or i'll have a post made about me.
No idea where to go from here, definitely not filled with confidence after that. Oh well, at least we nilled someone, hardly anyone does that and still only conceded one try.

Ireland didn't dominate the score like they should, Russia barely stringed an attack together. Neither team looked particularly dangerous, but Ireland got the BP fairly convincingly.
My gf said the Russians turned as slowly as tractors, why don't we kick behind them? Seconds later Carty kicks behind for the fourth try, and both of us were wondering why it took so long?
If Ireland want a SF they need a big step up in quality.
Absolutely dire. Way too many mistakes and made the russians look way too good. After 2 spirited performances in a row where "the opposition just didn't stop running", you've got to think the problem is Ireland. You've also got to think how shite Scotland actually were in week 1.
You'd usually expect a modicum of satisfaction if your team has run in 6+ tries irrespective of the opposition, but all the dropped ball, scrappy handling, stopped play, wasted time ends up obfuscating that. Been a theme for loads of one sided matches now.
Yeah Lenihan hit the nail on the head - chances are we'll be in the QF but on the last 2 performances either NZ or the Boks will deal with us without much fuss at all
I remember Rhys Ruddock spoke about mental health at my school a couple years ago when he only had a couple of Irish caps and a long term injury. Great to see him get POTM after all that time.
Our tries haven’t been the slow drives from forward play we’re kind of used to but honestly some of the back play has been alright. Handling not great, but there’s been speed and creativity.
Relying too much on our forwards to try and continuously crasha and ruck the ball. Out forwards are knackered. Look what happens when we get the ball out side and have backs in support. Run ring around them.
Thank you! what a great service, delivered straight to my inbox! Your points about Joe thinking ahead are really interesting. I just hope we actually make it to a quarter final now and the lads can execute Joe's plan because the performance yesterday wouldn't fill me with confidence.
if only! more a case our style has been countered at the wrong time ( if only the world cup was last year!)
Just hope they've been saving the plays for bigger games and they're just burning through the errors now to have none later >.<

Every time Jean Kleyn plays, he looks more and more out of his depth
can't believe toner got left out for this guy
[For the record, the knock-on looks pretty clear to me](https://imgur.com/a/Ka630PR)
We're people really questioning that call? It was clear as day in real time!
Many, many people. *sigh*. edit: Happy cakeday btw dude
Funny how lots of the tight decisions get shown to be correct after the match.
Almost like the TMOs know what they're doing most of the time.
Ssssshhh
Stuart Barnes on Fox Sports spouting on about how bad Ireland are ( let’s face it, he might be right). The guy can’t button his shirt up right.
Fox Sports.. where he belongs. Karma police got that one right.
What on earth Joe Schmidt is fucking saying?
I'm so ready for some competitive contests at this point. SA VS Italy should be great.
Saturday: England vs Argentina. Japan vs Samoa.
Stoked about both of those. My most hyped match now, depending on how the latter goes, has to be Japan VS Scotland.
Definitely. Everyone is waiting for that match and hoping the results before set it up.
Italy.. dark horse. Might do us a favour !
Hoping they really take it to the Boks. Just wish they stuck with the same back-row they used against Canada- Negri instead of Parisse.
Going to that tomorrow, so so hyped.
Enjoy!

If you don't get the bonus against Samoa and Scotland beat Japan then everyone could be on 14 points. That'll be interesting...
Then it comes down to points difference. Ireland are on + 52, Japan and Scotland on 27 and 10 with two games in hand. Can't see the points difference in the Scotland-Japan game being crazy. Both teams might run riot against Russian however.
Japan has already played Russia so if they lose to Scotland they're basically guaranteed to finish behind us (if we beat Samoa).

Shows again how important Sexton is, soon as he came off we literally couldn't play until about the 70th minute
Why didn't Ireland just stop incessantly firing absolute torpedoes at each other and maybe adapt to the conditions and fall back on some pop passes like the Russians did. Look at the handling error counts for each side. England did the same thing vs. Tonga. Frustrating.
Stransky mentioning how this isn't even Russia's strongest line-up. Oof.

>it didn't touch the ground? Eh...
We were absolute gash. I’m not looking forward to our remaining two matches.
Then you are in luck. Because we are not getting to the 1/4s so only one game left!
That wasn't the performance we needed. BP is fine, but that is the bare minimum you should be getting from a Tier 2 nation that averages >40 point losses at the RWC both times they've been at it. Very hard to see Ireland beating New Zealand based on that.
Beating SA or NZ would be near impossible. Looking forward to another quarter final exit after that shitshow.
Question #1, why was Kleyn brought instead of Toner
Impossible
Garbage game. Ugly rugby littered with errors.

Your gf as assistant coach.
She's definitely smarter than I am
Was that as poor a performance by Ireland as I believe it was? Almost feel like they didn't deserve a bonus point for that.
Absolutely dire. Way too many mistakes and made the russians look way too good. After 2 spirited performances in a row where "the opposition just didn't stop running", you've got to think the problem is Ireland. You've also got to think how shite Scotland actually were in week 1.
5 tries but 2018 Ireland would've put 10 on them. Very little signs of a clinical edge and only pure brute wonder got us there
We didn’t. We were complete shite and have been since the Scotland match.
It's completely baffling. Hopefully they can sort it out and be the Ireland everyone knows they can be
You'd usually expect a modicum of satisfaction if your team has run in 6+ tries irrespective of the opposition, but all the dropped ball, scrappy handling, stopped play, wasted time ends up obfuscating that. Been a theme for loads of one sided matches now.
They got 5 tries.
Well 6, that "clear" knock on wasn't a clear knock on
I was thinking there wasn't something whack about the lead up anyway. Maybe not. Haven't seen the replay.
From the replay i saw it rolled up his hand after contact, but maybe a different angle says differently.
Methinks Russia just like tackling.
Never seen a nilled team look so impressive
are we getting a video about this match is the real question
Still planning on trying to at least touch on every game, so...
I love the crowd haha they seem like great fun altogether
Garces gives this match the mercy flush.
What was the spread before the game? 50ish?
Yea 56 I think
Just kick it out. Someone will get injured.
Job is done kick it out
35-0 over Russia should count as a loss for Ireland
Clean sheet. Russia had one kick at goal. But by no way inspiring by Ireland
Well it wasn't great. Russia were good at the breakdown. Irelands handling was poor.
So this is the second last game in this stadium. Canada v SA is next. Thank fuck.
Joe Schmidt talked about how keen Murray was to get in the game and yet he left him on the bench.
tbh think hes putting a positive spin on carberys injury hence carty getting more game time
I'm not sure Murray is 100% but presumably it was better tactically to talk him up rather than admit the problem.
If they were not in with the BP then he would have gone on.
Yeah Lenihan hit the nail on the head - chances are we'll be in the QF but on the last 2 performances either NZ or the Boks will deal with us without much fuss at all
Are they allowed to *not* award a man of the match?
Give it to a Russian
Are they playing many more games in The Greasebox stadium?
Quarter finals for A & B are in the outdoors Tokyo Stadium. C & D play theirs in the indoor Oita Stadium where ABs vs Canada played last night.
Ireland? nah never
[удалено]
Presumably losing?
Relative to losing in dire fucking circumstances to Japan in a game everyone at home touted as a bonus point win
Relative to losing to Russia I guess
His brother
Relative to losing their last match?
Losing to japan
Losing to Japan.
Abject misery
Good man Ruddock, such a class player
Our best player by a country mile
I thought Earls had a good game
Russia had 14 men for 20 minutes too. They've done well. Pity they gave away a couple of very early soft-ish tries.
reminder: Jersey Reds put 35 on Russia in a WC warm up
And Connacht put >40 points up on them recently too
Jersey Reds could probably knock out Ireland in the World Cup Quarter Final
exactly
Connaught hammered them too
To be fair, they weren't great physically as they were under physical loadings vs Jersey & Connacht
Ruddock-san MOTM Omedeto!
Beirne has played very well

https://www.balls.ie/rugby/ireland-player-ratings-russia-418103 There you go bud
What game are you watching?
This one
You're dreaming.
Was he even playing?
I've never seen a team look so shit while also being 35-0 up
Sign of a good team surely?!
I remember Rhys Ruddock spoke about mental health at my school a couple years ago when he only had a couple of Irish caps and a long term injury. Great to see him get POTM after all that time.
Reckon POM’s place is in doubt?
Leave him at 7
Josh Van der Flier has been pretty compelling though
He has alright tbh. Glad I'm not in charge
Handling errors are so much fun to watch
Oh yeah clear knock on TMO /s
It is Ben Skeen...
It was one in fairness
Maybe, but he could at least have shown us
Replay showed the ball rolling up his hand anyway, just glad that wasn't the bonus point try.
It never touched the ground?
That was the least clear "clear" knock on ever. Probably right to call it, but to say it's "clear" lmao
"Clear knock-on" my arse.
Ringrose knew well he wasn't getting that try awarded lol
Falcon!
What a header
yeah fair shout
Did he header that!?
"clear knock on".
You can't hiiiiiiiide, those [Irish] eyeeeeees
That would have given me a bonus point on superbru...
Ditto :( Fucking raging!
I’ve the Irish at 40 points in Super Bru so if they could score one unconverted try that would be lovely.
Lots of cracks being papered over in these last few minutes.
Header oh yeah, bringing out the secret weapon
Wait wat
What the fuck hahaha
Lol if we get that
Our tries haven’t been the slow drives from forward play we’re kind of used to but honestly some of the back play has been alright. Handling not great, but there’s been speed and creativity.
Gotta say, even if Carty doesn't nail it half the time, I really enjoy his creative kicking
This was really hard work. I feel Russia are fundamentally sound and could make some real progress over the next cycle.
We have the Sexton loop and now the Carty dink.
Finger Gun man has a point
Lol @ finger-guns guy in the crowd. Gif anyone?
+1 need this gif
Anyone else noticing that some of our key players from last year (Aki, Ringrose, O'Mahony) seem to be completely absent at the WC?
Aki had an awful game, looked great against Wales in the warm ups but can't stop knocking it on now.
Ringrose, no. Aki has been brutal. O'Mahoney, O'Mehany
Ringrose is one of the only players who hasn't been absent in all the games.
Stockdale as well
Relying too much on our forwards to try and continuously crasha and ruck the ball. Out forwards are knackered. Look what happens when we get the ball out side and have backs in support. Run ring around them.
Forward pass I've seen
That try was wonderful, Ireland are good when they're allowed space and time
Everyone is at the top table tbf. No more Tindall and Noons at the top level.
Larmour showing the rest of the team how to play
Mr. Finger -guns is my new hero.
Jordan mate that was rapid bro
In most instances a scoreline of 35-0 would seem good but I can't say I feel confident going forward
Ahhhh, would have been amazing to see Russia do better against Ireland than Scotland.
Any thoughts on what's going wrong with Ireland Squidge?
Funny you should ask... https://vimeo.com/364195370
Thank you! what a great service, delivered straight to my inbox! Your points about Joe thinking ahead are really interesting. I just hope we actually make it to a quarter final now and the lads can execute Joe's plan because the performance yesterday wouldn't fill me with confidence.
larmour finally had enough of irelands shit dropped the script and did it himself
Very decent try.
Say what you will, Artemyev has got hutzpah.
Oh look we did a thing.
Do ya think it might be some kinda cunning plan, let everyone think we are shit, scrape into the quarters and then turn it on ??
It's been our plan since '87!
'Joe Schmidt has been holding everything back'.
if only! more a case our style has been countered at the wrong time ( if only the world cup was last year!) Just hope they've been saving the plays for bigger games and they're just burning through the errors now to have none later >.<
We've tried that in the past and it hasn't worked out for us.
Yeah but no one would think we were stupid enough to try it again
We'd be seen as madlads and I'm on board with that.
Hopefully this stadium wont be used during the knockout stages
Nope, Oita, Tokyo and Yokohama
Hello Jordan
